The Paper River is a classroom simulation designed to examine a negative externality generated by a productive process that elicits a Coasian solution. Previous experiments designed by Hazlett (1995), Nugent (1993, 1997), and Bergstrom and Miller (1997, 179–99) focus on how pollution emission rights can be efficiently allocated by the market through property rights. Although these experiments touch on property rights in demonstrating how emission rights are a more efficient means of reducing pollution than government imposed limits, they do not address Coase's Theorem directly. Classroom experiments that demonstrate Coase's Theorem include those by Delemeester and Neral (1995, 115–19) and Stodder (1996). In these activities, students imagine they are either the creator or recipient of a hypothetical externality. Although this approach is useful for conveying Coase's Theorem, it does not give students the opportunity to generate and experience the externality directly. In the Paper River, students create and experience an externality first hand and then conceptualize a correction procedure that is consistent with Coase's Theorem. The unique nature of this simulation allows students to be involved directly in the externality. In addition, it simulates an actual environmental problem, which will enable students to identify more easily other examples of externalities that affect our society, such as endangered species, destruction of the rainforests, and preservation of natural habitats. In this paper, the author introduced a sentiment analysis-based customer loyalty prediction model in mobile applications using word embedding models, deep learning algorithms, and deep contextualized word representations. This method showed better performances than usual state-of-the-art methods in separate data sets along with the combined data set on both gender and region classification. Objective: Robust scientific and clinical evidence of how to appropriately manage denture plaque is lacking. This two-part study (i) developed an in vitro model of denture plaque removal, and (ii) assessed effectiveness of these approaches in a randomised clinical trial. Method: (i) a complex denture plaque model was developed using the dominant microbial genera from a recent microbiome analyses. Biofilms formed on polymethylmethacrylate were brushed daily with a wet toothbrush, then either treated daily for 5 days or only on Days 1 and 5 with Polident® denture cleanser tablets (3 min soaking). Quantitative and qualitative microbiological assessments were performed. (ii), an examiner-blind, randomised, crossover study of complete maxillary denture wearers was performed (n = 19). Either once-daily for 7 days or on Day 7 only, participants soaked dentures for 15 min using Corega® denture cleansing tables, then brushed. Denture plaque microbiological assessment used sterilized filter paper discs. Results: The in vitro model showed daily cleaning with denture cleanser plus brushing significantly reduced microbial numbers compared to intermittent denture cleaning with daily brushing (p < 0.001). The clinical component of the study showed a statistically significant reduction in denture plaque microbial numbers in favour of daily versus weekly treatment (aerobic bacteria p = 0.0144). Both in vitro and in vivo studies showed that denture plaque biofilm composition were affected by different treatment arms. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that daily denture cleansing regimens are superior to intermittent denture cleansing, and that cleansing regimens can induce denture plaque compositional changes. This study investigated whether small additions to soil of primary paper-mill sludge, a wood fibre residue from paper production (fibre sludge), caused temporary N immobilization and thereby reduced the amount of inorganic nitrogen leached from agricultural land. This was achieved by measuring respiration and immobilization of N in incubation studies at 8°C, with fibre sludge added at rates varying from 63 to 1000?mg?C?kg -1 soil. Glucose added at rates of 63–250?mg?C?kg -1 soil was used as a reference. Respiration in soil after glucose addition followed an exponential course with the highest rates on days 2–4. During this period maximum peaks of net N immobilization were measured. Even addition of only 63?mg glucose-C?kg -1 soil caused significant immobilization of N in soil. Fibre sludge additions to soil caused lower respiration activities, characterized by two initial peaks followed by somewhat higher respiration rates during the remaining incubation than for glucose. It was likely that hemicellulose, which amounted to 14% of the total C, was the initial available energy source in the sludge as concentrations of water-soluble C were very low. Addition of at least 250?mg?C?kg -1 soil as fibre sludge was required to cause significant N immobilization in soil corresponding to 5?kg?N?ha -1 . Both nitrate and ammonium were immobilized. Relating maximum N immobilization data during days 2 to 10 to corresponding respiration data for glucose and fibre sludge revealed that microbes utilised similar amounts of C per unit N immobilized. On average, 175.6±74.8?mg CO 2 -C were respired to immobilize 1?mg?N and the relationship between C respiration and N immobilization was linear ( R 2 =0.984). To make soil application of fibre sludge a realistic counter-measure against N leaching from agricultural soils, pre-treatment is necessary to increase the content of energy readily available to microbes. Since the ending of apartheid, the state, political parties, civil society and ordinary people in South Africa have attempted to deal with the traumatic legacies of the past to engender a common sense of nationhood. This paper examines this process of dealing with the past through the theoretical lens of post-colonialism, focusing, in particular, on attempts to establish historical truth and collective memory for black women, who have often been most marginalised by colonialism and apartheid and excluded from dominant accounts of history. It argues that if black women are denied a presence and agency in the construction of collective memory, their belonging and citizenship is consequently mediated in the process of nation building. It considers how exclusionary and discriminating patterns are reproduced through attempts to construct national memory-archives, focusing on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). It then explores the measures being taken to create a more inclusive process of restoring collective memory. In particular, it discusses the importance and possibilities of creating a postcolonial archive, where the voices and texts of historically marginalised people can be incorporated into national projects of remembering and notions of belonging. The paper focuses specifically on recent attempts to archive black women's pictorial and written testimony in a memory cloths programme. It concludes that representations of the past by women are a valuable tool in tracing the ways in which the legacy of their belonging and social standing shapes their contemporary citizenship. The radical potential of postcolonial archives lies in the fact that they can work against more sanitised representations of contemporary South Africa and towards the requirements for social justice (especially for black women) that are embodied within, but were arguably not met by, the TRC and broader nation building processes. This paper is about a 'place' that effectively no longer exists - in the sense of being a recognisable unit of territory. 'Chishanga' has always been a term of contestation, referring more or less tenuously to a stretch of ground across which struggles for authority, power and identity have taken place. In tracking and examining these struggles using oral history techniques, the paper draws attention to the fallacies of a chiefdom-based approach to pre-colonial African history. Poverty has always been a global concern that has restricted human development. The first goal (SDG 1) of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to eliminate all forms of poverty all over the world. The establishment of a scientific and effective localized SDG 1 evaluation and monitoring method is the key to achieving SDG 1. This paper proposes SDG 1 China district and county-level localization evaluation method based on multi-source remote sensing data for the United Nations Sustainable Development Framework. The temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of China's poverty areas and their SDG 1 evaluation values in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018 have been analyzed. Based on the SDGs global indicator framework, this paper first constructed SDG 1 China's district and county localization indicator system and then extracted multidimensional feature factors from nighttime light images, land cover data, and digital elevation model data. Secondly, we establish SDG 1 China's localized partial least squares estimation model and SDG 1 China's localized machine learning estimation model. Finally, we analyze and verify the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of China's poverty areas and counties and their SDG 1 evaluation values. The results show that SDG 1 China's district and county localization indicator system proposed in this study and SDG 1 China's localized partial least squares estimation model can better reflect the poverty level of China's districts and counties. The estimated model R2 is 0.65, which can identify 72.77% of China's national poverty counties. From 2012 to 2018, the spatial distribution pattern of SDG evaluation values in China's districts and counties is that the SDG evaluation values gradually increase from western China to eastern China. In addition, the average SDG 1 evaluation value of China's districts and counties increased by 23% from 2012 to 2018. This paper is oriented to the United Nations SDGs framework, explores the SDG 1 localized evaluation method of China's districts and counties based on multisource remote sensing data, and provides a scientific and rapid regional poverty monitoring and evaluation program for the implementation of the 2030 agenda poverty alleviation goals. Human error estimating food intake is a major source of bias in nutrition research. Artificial intelligence (AI) methods may reduce bias, but the overall accuracy of AI estimates is unknown. This study was a systematic review of peer-reviewed journal articles comparing fully automated AI-based (e.g. deep learning) methods of dietary assessment from digital images to human assessors and ground truth (e.g. doubly labelled water). Literature was searched through May 2023 in four electronic databases plus reference mining. Eligible articles reported AI estimated volume, energy, or nutrients. Independent investigators screened articles and extracted data. Potential sources of bias were documented in absence of an applicable risk of bias assessment tool. Database and hand searches identified 14,059 unique publications; fifty-two papers (studies) published from 2010 to 2023 were retained. For food detection and classification, 79% of papers used a convolutional neural network. Common ground truth sources were calculation using nutrient tables (51%) and weighed food (27%). Included papers varied widely in food image databases and results reported, so meta-analytic synthesis could not be conducted. Relative errors were extracted or calculated from 69% of papers. Average overall relative errors (AI vs. ground truth) ranged from 0.10% to 38.3% for calories and 0.09% to 33% for volume, suggesting similar performance. Ranges of relative error were lower when images had single/simple foods. Relative errors for volume and calorie estimations suggest that AI methods align with – and have the potential to exceed – accuracy of human estimations. However, variability in food image databases and results reported prevented meta-analytic synthesis. The field can advance by testing AI architectures on a limited number of large-scale food image and nutrition databases that the field determines to be adequate for training and testing and by reporting accuracy of at least absolute and relative error for volume or calorie estimations. These results suggest that AI methods are in line with – and have the potential to exceed – accuracy of human estimations of nutrient content based on digital food images. Variability in food image databases used and results reported prevented meta-analytic synthesis. The field can advance by testing AI architectures on a limited number of large-scale food image and nutrition databases that the field determines to be accurate and by reporting accuracy of at least absolute and relative error for volume or calorie estimations. Providing personalized recommendation service for users and improving the accuracy of recommendation and user satisfaction are the main research tasks of current travel recommendation systems. The intelligent recommendation model of tourist places requires the algorithm to be able to accurately recommend tourist attractions according to the user's interests. Big data and artificial intelligence technologies have driven the development of intelligent recommendation systems. However, realistic data are often sparse, and the lack of common rating items among users makes some traditional similarity measures impossible to calculate. In addition, traditional collaborative filtering algorithms ignore the issue of user preferences, which can cause a decrease in recommendation accuracy. To address these issues, this paper analyzes the factors affecting users' interest preferences in terms of their global and local rating information. The interest preferences of users are calculated by computing the probability distribution of user rating information globally and using Hamming approach degree. A similarity algorithm about user preferences is derived using Jeffries-Matusita distance. The similarity algorithm is effectively combined with the traditional similarity algorithm to propose a model of collaborative filtering recommendation algorithm for tourist attractions based on user preferences under sparse data. The paper aims to improve the accuracy of tourist attraction recommendation systems by incorporating user preferences and addressing the issue of sparse data and the lack of common rating items among users that traditional similarity measures cannot calculate. The experimental results show that the improved algorithm model outperforms the traditional collaborative filtering algorithm and other algorithms. Human resource management was of great significance for enterprises to formulate development strategies and improve competitiveness. With the rapid development of new technologies such as knowledge economy and big data, the traditional human resource performance appraisal model had certain limitations and was not objective, which had been difficult to adapt to the increasingly highly integrated development needs of modern enterprises. Therefore, this paper used big data analysis and new technical means to put forward the study of human resource performance evaluation model based on Bayesian network, aiming to provide some theoretical reference for modern enterprise human resource management. First of all, it summarized the related concepts of performance appraisal and its important position in enterprise management, analyzed the characteristics of human resources performance appraisal indicators and their mutual relations, and expounded the common methods and characteristics needed to build a performance appraisal system. Secondly, it summarized the relevant theory of Bayesian network and its advantages in solving complex random problems, and proposed a performance appraisal model based on Bayesian network for the needs of enterprise human resources management. Finally, the balanced scorecard method was used to build a performance appraisal system, and the performance appraisal model proposed in this paper was tested by experiments, and compared with the traditional method. The results showed that the performance appraisal model proposed in this paper had significant advantages and could be better applied to the performance appraisal management of enterprise human resources. The research of this paper can not only provide theoretical guidance for further research on enterprise human resource allocation and management, but also provide reference for performance appraisal in other fields. This paper investigates ethnic inequity in cycling to work in London, as ethnic minorities in London cycle to work less frequently than white Londoners. The study adopts three methods: spatial statistics, linear regression and spatial econometrics based on recent UK census and official statistical data (2011–17) of 33 London regions. Spatial analysis shows that cycling networks and bike schemes are concentrated around Inner London. Regions with less cycling infrastructure tend to have a greater proportion of residents of ethnic minorities. The paper highlights the spatial dependence between ethnic inequalities and cycling to work at a regional level in London. There is also evidence of spatial spillovers between neighbouring regions. The paper highlights the need to shift the policy focus from the provision of cycling infrastructure to mobility justice. This means recognizing the needs of distinct groups of cyclists coming from various ethnic minorities. Overall, this paper expands the transportation policies approach by linking it with the concepts of mobilities and regional inequalities. Researchers have sought to understand how Indigenous and Western knowledge systems can be bridged for development research to be (a) more inclusive of local actors and knowledge and (b) more relevant to the problems it aims to address. Research in Amazonian Indigenous contexts remains dominated by a 'Western' science struggling to accommodate bottom-up development research. This paper examines how Indigenous and Western knowledge is bridged in knowledge co-production with Amazonian Indigenous communities, and what outcomes such bridging incurs. The paper uses a systematic realist review analysing 22 studies. It finds that the bridging of Indigenous and Western knowledge, in co-production with Amazonian Indigenous communities, was based on partnership between Indigenous and scholarly communities. Emphasising mutual respect, power-sharing, and empowerment of Indigenous communities, this bridging contributes to generation of knowledge that is more legitimate and beneficial for all actors involved in the co-production process. However, the paper also observes a gap between knowledge co-production in theory and practice. Power-relations between Western scientists and Indigenous communities need to be further addressed in development research. More work is needed to enhance the legitimacy of knowledge, in order to further empower Indigenous communities to address local challenges according to their own contexts and needs. As humanity pushes deeper into the Anthropocene, Social-Ecological Systems (SESs) across the world are facing mounting pressures. Managing, protecting and understanding these systems require research into their complex and interlinked nature. One area that has been met with increased research in recent times is Sense of Place (SoP), broadly defined as the emotional bond that people have with a 'place'. There has been substantial growth in the number of studies seeking to understand and quantify SoP across different contexts to help integrate it into decision-making processes. This targeted scoping review aims to explore the environmental literature for examples of applied studies that measure SoP in social-ecological contexts with a focus on how SoP has been quantified and measured. Our results show a growing body of literature as well as a number of clear knowledge gaps. The majority of studies to date have focussed on the Global North (accounting for 79% of the published papers), particularly the USA and Australia, with the distribution of authors closely mirroring this same pattern. Marine and freshwater ecosystems were understudied in comparison to terrestrial ecosystems. Mixed methods were most commonly used to collect data, with interviews and surveys being the most common instruments. Further research into why SoP is being measured is required, but preliminary investigations indicate there is a perceived applicability to policy and planning. Image processing algorithms based on time-frequency analysis are frequently used in testing and researching the mechanical properties of high-temperature materials, especially in aerospace, engines, and ships. However, due to the complexity of the high temperature environment itself, there are many factors that affect the measurement accuracy, among which the existence of thermal airflow disturbance has a particularly significant impact on the digital image correlation method. This paper mainly focuses on two aspects of high temperature edge detection and digital image correlation. On the one hand, the existing algorithm is improved to make it suitable for material property detection in high temperature environment. And relevant experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility and accuracy of the algorithm. The full-field coefficient caching method for fitting initial values proposed in this paper has the premise that the accuracy is comparable to that of the reverse combined Gauss-Newton matching algorithm, but the running speed is improved by about 10%, and the matching accuracy of both is obviously higher than that of the surface fitting algorithm. The study of business performance has a substantial impact on improving the internal management and economic performance of companies. By analysing the previous literature, this paper chooses to measure the factors affecting business performance at four levels, including R&D investment intensity, human capital, patents, and brand value. The purpose of the study is to find out whether these selected factors work equally well for small and medium-sized enterprises. The sample size was 846 Chinese small and medium enterprises from different industries. The firm performance indicators were ROA and ROE. The data has been collected through National Equities Exchange and Quotations platforms based on updated annual reports in 2019. Finally, a stepwise descriptive analysis and multiple linear regression were conducted and predicted the tendency of business performance. The analysis provided the linear combination of four independent variables (R&D, human capital, patents, and brand value) which are significantly related to the dependent variable (business performance). In conclusion, we found that there is a positive impact of patents and brand value on business performance. In detail, we concluded that only production and highly educated personnel show a positive influence. For R&D intensity, there is no strong connection could be observed. The main objective of this paper is to assess the non-linearities between the ESG activities and firm performance in case of an emerging market. China is identified as a case study for the present examination. Even though this research objective has been explored by past researcher, the evidence presented in literature is not conclusive. The paper hypothesizes that such conflicting or inconclusive results can potentially be attributed to wrong modeling, datasets that include both developing and the developed markets, and the prevalent endogeneity issue in corporate governance literature. For the purpose of this paper, the author uses the dynamic panel approach of First difference and the System Generalized Method of Moments. The findings from the analysis of 232 Chinese listed firm show a positive association between ESG activities and the firm performance. However, the relationship is nonlinear. In other words, the relationship between ESG activities and the firm performance is inverted U-shaped. This indicates the relationship is positive up to a certain threshold and once the ESG activities cross that threshold it start to have negative effect. This paper investigates the impact of Internet infrastructure construction on enterprise transformation and upgrading and the underlying mechanisms using a progressive double difference model based on a quasi-natural experiment of the Chinese government's "broadband China" policy by matching A-share listed companies and city panel data from 2008–2019 in Shanghai and Shenzhen. The conclusions show that the "broadband China" policy can significantly promote the transformation and upgrading of enterprises in pilot cities. However, its effect shows a diminishing marginal contribution, and the policy is more effective for traditional manufacturing industries during the implementation period. Enhancing human capital and reducing internal transaction costs are two important channels for Internet infrastructure construction to help enterprises transform and upgrade. Combined with the life cycle theory, we find that the "broadband China" policy has the most significant impact on changing and upgrading enterprises in the growth and maturity stages, especially those in the manufacturing industry, but not those in the maturity and decline stages of the service industry. Finally, a series of robustness tests using Monte Carlo simulation, entropy balance method, and instrumental variables method, excluding other factors, show that the findings are still robust. Based on the panel data of 285 cities in China from 2000 to 2019, this paper searches the number of patent applications related to urban artificial intelligence from five dimensions: algorithm, data, computing power, application scenario and related technology. Combining the two perspectives of industrial upgrading and rationalization, we analyze the internal influence theory of the research topic from the theoretical and empirical perspectives. The results show that artificial intelligence is not only conducive to industrial upgrading, but also significantly inhibit the deviation of industrial structure from equilibrium, which is conducive to industrial rationalization. In addition, the conclusion of this paper is still valid after a series of robustness tests, such as eliminating the samples of central cities, winsorize treatment and instrumental variables method. Through the heterogeneity test, it is found that the promoting effect of artificial intelligence on industrial upgrading is more obvious in big cities and cities with high level of industrial upgrading. The internal mechanism test results show that artificial intelligence promotes industrial upgrading by promoting technological innovation. In cities with a high degree of marketization and Internet development, the role of artificial intelligence in promoting industrial upgrading can be strengthened. The research conclusions of this paper will be conducive to accelerating the development of artificial intelligence to promote industrial upgrading, and provide a useful reference for realizing high-quality development. Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgery is a challenging and very demanding field that involves the treatment of congenital and acquired conditions of the face and head. Due to the complexity of the head and facial region, various tools and techniques were developed and utilized to aid surgical procedures and optimize results. Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) has revolutionized the way craniomaxillofacial surgeries are planned and executed. It uses 3D imaging computer software to visualize and simulate a surgical procedure. Numerous studies were published on the usage of VSP in craniomaxillofacial surgery. However, the researchers found inconsistency in the previous literature which prompted the development of this review. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the findings of the studies by conducting an integrated approach to synthesize the literature related to the use of VSP in craniomaxillofacial surgery. Twenty-nine related articles were selected as a sample and synthesized thoroughly. These papers were grouped assigning to the four subdisciplines of craniomaxillofacial surgery: orthognathic surgery, reconstructive surgery, trauma surgery and implant surgery. The following variables – treatment time, the accuracy of VSP, clinical outcome, cost, and cost-effectiveness – were also examined. Results revealed that VSP offers advantages in craniomaxillofacial surgery over the traditional method in terms of duration, predictability and clinical outcomes. However, the cost aspect was not discussed in most papers. This structured literature review will thus provide current findings and trends and recommendations for future research on the usage of VSP in craniomaxillofacial surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experts have described ways to improve peer review quality. Perspectives from expert reviewers are largely absent in the health professions education literature. To gather guidance from expert reviewers, to aid authors striving to publish and reviewers aiming to perform their task effectively. This study surveyed the Journal of Graduate Medical Education (JGME) 'Top Reviewers' from 2017, 2018, and 2019. 'Top Reviewers' perform four or more reviews per year, with high average ratings. Top reviewers were sent an 11-item survey in February 2020. The survey included three demographic questions and eight open-ended, free-text questions about the concepts reviewers most often target in their reviews. We calculated descriptive statistics and performed a thematic analysis of open-ended responses. Of 62 eligible top reviewers, 44 (71%) responded to the survey. Only eight (18.2%) and seven (15.9%) respondents reported having 'stock phrases' or a reviewer template used for reviewer feedback to authors, respectively. The what (research question, methods), how (presentation, writing), and why (relevance, impact) were the resulting themes summarizing how reviewers categorized and responded to common problems. For 'really good papers' reviewers found the what acceptable and focused on how and why. For 'really bad' papers, reviewers focused on big picture feedback, such as the value of the study. Top reviewers from a single health professions education journal appear to have similar approaches to conducting reviews. While most do not use stock phrases or templates, they share similar strategies to differentiate 'good' vs. 'bad' papers through the what, why, and how of a manuscript. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In our research, we study the case of a pulp and paper producer who decides to establish a partnership with one buyer. Using two different types of relationship, namely a traditional system without any collaboration scheme and Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment, we develop decision models describing the producer and the buyer planning processes. We also identify which approach is more profitable for each actor as well as for the network, based on real costs and parameters obtained from the industrial case. We then test how different incentives can improve the traditional system and provide higher gains for each partner. The objective of the present research work was to explore the nutritional composition of different infant formulas and determine the safety status of these products. For this purpose, different infant formula brands were procured from the local market of Faisalabad, Pakistan. After the collection of these different brands, nutritional composition, i.e. fat, protein, ash, moisture and fiber was determined whilst the microbial analysis, such as Salmonella, Yeasts and Molds Count, and Total Bacteria Count, was carried out through their methods. In addition, the amino acid profile was assessed through paper chromatography. Furthermore, an appropriate statistical design was carried out to determine the level of significance. Mean values for amino acids, i.e. lysine, valine and cysteine varied from 3.06 g/100 g to 6.63 g/100 g, 4.90 g/100 g to 6.51 g/100 g, and 2.32 g/100 g to 3.04 g/100 g, respectively, in different brands of infant formula. Moreover, moisture content, crude proteins, crude fat, crude fiber, ash content, and nitrogen-free extract (NFE) varied from 1.6% to 3.83%, 10.55% to 14.67%, 9.82% to 26.63%, 1.00% to 4.13%, 1.87% to 4.20%, and 51.03% to 69.17%, respectively. It is evident from the microbiological analyses that Salmonella was not present in any brand of infant formula. Whereas yeast and mold counts were ≤2 cfu/g to ≤10 cfu/g in different brands. Moreover, total bacteria count was exhibited in the range of 1.5 × 103cfu/g to 6.3 × 103 cfu/g among different brands. Local infant formulas contained high amounts of heavy metals, i.e. 0.99 pp, of lead content followed by cadmium and aluminum as 0.28–0.98 ppm and 1.48–2.05 ppm, respectively. The article by Zwetsloot and Woodall (2019) opportunely addresses an updated and relevant topic that has been escaping the attention of the data-centric/evidenced based communities. As data collectors become widely available across industrial processes and along the entire value chain, the issue of aggregation becomes not only a need for handling high-throughput data streams but, as I show here, an opportunity to improve the performance of classical data analytics by exploring an extra tuning dimension: data granularity (or level of aggregation). In this discussion, I begin by clarifying what I consider to be two distinct perspectives of data aggregation to be taken into account, here designated as process data streams aggregation (or the process-oriented perspective) and product samples aggregation (or the quality-oriented perspective). Next, the topic of handling variables with different levels of aggregation is addressed, as well as the potential advantages of selectively introducing aggregation, even when raw data are available at a single aggregation level. Finally, the topic of adaptability in data aggregation is commented upon within the scope of multiscale methods for statistical process monitoring. Across my exposition, I also try to convey the perspective of the process industries (PI), such as oil and chemicals, biofuels, pharmaceutical, pulp and paper, food and drink, semiconductors, and microelectronics, among others we have been involved with, and where the topic discussed in Zwetsloot and Woodall (2019) is very relevant. Photovoltaic systems (PV) have been extensively used worldwide as a reliable and effective renewable energy resource due to their environmental and economic merits. However, PV systems are prone to several environmental and weather conditions that impact their performance. Amongst these conditions is dust accumulation, which has a significant adversative impact on the solar cells' performance, especially in hot and arid regions. This study provides a comprehensive review of 278 articles focused on the impact of dust on PV panels' performance along with other associated environmental factors, such as temperature, humidity, and wind speed. The review highlights the importance of modelling dust accumulation along with other ecological factors due to their interactive nature, and the differences between cleaning techniques and schedules effectiveness. Moreover, the study provides a review of statistical and artificial intelligence models used to predict PV performance and its prediction accuracies in terms of data size and complexity. Finally, the study draws attention to several research gaps that warrant further investigation. Among these gaps is the need for proper dynamic optimisation models for cleaning schedules and a more advanced machine and deep learning models to predict dust accumulation while considering environmental and ageing factors. The article presents information on the one-minute paper, a method for the active participation of students in the learning process, and on a pilot implementation of this technique to manage instruction in the micro portion of the introductory economics course at a large public university. The one-minute paper is a "modest, relatively simple and low-tech" innovation designed to obtain regular feedback from students. In the final minute or two of a class, the teacher asks the students what they learned in the class on that day. The teacher encourages students to provide thoughtful and sincere responses to his questions. Unlike standard end-of-term evaluations, one-minute paper allows the students to provide guidance for their own ongoing instruction and not for students in the future. The results of the pilot project, on the effectiveness of the one-minute paper, suggests that the one-minute paper does enhance economic knowledge by approximately .6 of a point on the postTUCE exam, ceteris paribus. This result represents an approximate 6.6 percent increase in economic knowledge relative to the mean preTUCE level, a practically significant return for a modest investment of time.

The article focuses on the papers of the 19th-century British art connoisseur and curator George Scharf. This paper is a reflection upon the research findings of Rebecca Allen and Anne West in relation to religious schools in London. It also suggests that certain historical and cultural contextual knowledge is required when analysing the characteristics of different categories of religious schools. Despite their alleged comprehensiveness and the many linkages between poverty and environment, most poverty reduction strategy papers have until now insufficiently acknowledged the importance of environmental sustainability. To tackle this shortcoming, participative processes were initiated to 'green' PRSPs (meaning the integration of environmental sustainability as a cross-cutting issue). This supposes a process approach to decision-making and implies opening up the policy process to a wide range of societal actors. This approach is conceptualised as a sustainability assessment. A descriptive analysis of the Benin PRSP-greening initiative is presented, based on interviews and on literature research. Subsequently, issues of importance in appreciating the wider impact of PRSP-greening are suggested. Besides the quality improvements of the PRSP, greening contributes to a gradual change in the way decision-making is perceived and contributes to social learning. The article offers information on dynamical systems and irrational angle construction by paper-folding. Construction of rational angle to any desired accuracy by folding a strip of paper requires approximating method. The construction uses a periodic sequence composed of two types of folding moves, guided by number-theoretic properties of the angle's fractional representation. The number-theoretic scheme must be replaced by something new, the Folds and Switchfold prescription, in the construction of irrational angles.

This article reviews Albert Einstein's first published paper, submitted for publication in 1900. At that time, Einstein was 21 and a recent college graduate. His paper uses modeling and least squares to analyze data in support of a scientific proposition. Einstein is shown to be well trained, for his day, in using statistics as a tool in his scientific research. This paper also shows his ability to make trivial arithmetic mistakes and some clumsiness in data recording. The distribution of DTPA-extractable Cd, Ni and Zn in four profile samples collected from areas contaminated with wastes from tannery, city sewage, pharmaceutical and paper mills located at different places in Bangladesh was investigated. Soil samples were analysed for the total and their DTPA-extractable metal contents. The total concentration of metals in the soil horizons ranged from 0.07 to 0.62 mg kg-1 for Cd, 31 to 54 mg kg-1 for Ni and 59 to 838 mg kg-1 for Zn, respectively. These metal concentrations were highest in the surface and lowest in the subsurface horizons. This trend was also observed for the DTPA-extractable amounts of these metals. The relative extractability, expressed as the ratio of DTPA to total contents (aqua regia-extractable) was 33 to 46% for Cd, 2 to 10% for Ni and 3 to 28% for Zn, respectively, in the A1 horizon, while in the B and C horizons the ratios decreased gradually as did total concentration, indicating that metal contamination was primarily limited to the surface horizon. For all three metals, the above mentioned ratio was highest in the city sewage soil and the lowest in the paper mill soil. In general, the extent of contamination among the profiles investigated was in the following order: city sewage>tannery>pharmaceutical>paper mill soil. Higher ratios of DTPA-extractable Cd, Ni and Zn in the city sewage soil than the other soils may create a risk for the contamination of agricultural products and ground water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This case study investigated how 23 students adapted to using a completely online textbook in lieu of a traditional paper text. All were enrolled in a single advanced MSW practice course. A variety of adaptation styles evolved. The students' primary strategy was to revert to making paper copies when permitted to do so instead of reading the assigned materials online. While a few students adapted to the electronic textbook, most generally did not because of interface design, time constraints, and study strategies. Box's paper helicopter has been used to teach experimental design for more than a decade. It is simple, inexpensive, and provides real data for an involved, multifactor experiment. Unfortunately it can also further an all-too-common practice that Professor Box himself has repeatedly cautioned against, namely ignoring the fundamental science while rushing to solve problems that may not be sufficiently understood. Often this slighting of the science so as to get on with the statistics is justified by referring to Box's oft-quoted maxim that "All models are wrong, however some are useful." Nevertheless, what is equally true, to paraphrase both Professor Box and George Orwell, is that "All models are wrong, but some are more wrong than others." To experiment effectively it is necessary to understand the relevant science so as to distinguish between what is usefully wrong, and what is dangerously wrong. This article presents an improved analysis of Box's helicopter problem relying on statistical and engineering knowledge and shows that this leads to an enhanced paper helicopter, requiring fewer experimental trails and achieving superior performance. In fact, of the 20 experimental trials run for validation–10 each of the proposed aerodynamic design and the conventional full factorial optimum–the longest 10 flight times all belong to the aerodynamic optimum, while the shortest 10 all belong to the conventional full factorial optimum. The article presents the authors' views in response to a comment on their paper "Patterns of Low and Lowest-Low Fertility in Europe," published in a 2004 issue of the journal "Population Studies." In their comment, the critics have argued that the cohort-fertility analysis in the aforesaid paper is weak on theoretical grounds and the empirical analysis is incomplete. The authors affirm that they agree with the comment that, as a society, the Netherlands differs from Southern Europe and even more from Central and Eastern Europe. Nevertheless, from a contemporary global perspective, these differences should not be overemphasized. They say that in their analyses, they used the Netherlands as a reference case of a country with an extraordinary pattern of late childbearing that is not associated with lowest-low fertility levels. However, the critics believe that these unusual characteristics invalidate the use of the Dutch example in the paper. So, this criticism is misconceived. It is precisely the unusualness of the fertility pattern in the Netherlands that makes it a useful reference point in the study of low and lowest-low fertility.

Librarians, through their professional associations, have long been committed to the social justice principle embedded in the concept of 'free access to information'. External censorship challenges to library collections threaten this principle overtly. However, censorship can also occur in libraries in various covert and often unconcious ways. This discussion paper raises concerns about current practices and processes which can effectively censor library collections from within. In the summer of 1987, more than 370 workers at Nicolet Paper Company in De Pere, Wisconsin, walked out on strike after refusing to agree to a wide range of concessions demanded by International Paper Company (IP), Nicolet's parent company. Within a few weeks, however, IP had permanently replaced the strikers, a tactic that became increasingly common in the 1980s. The author uses oral history interviews to provide a valuable, unique insight into the effects of the permanent replacement tactic, which bitterly divided the small community and left workers with psychological scars that were all too apparent more than a decade later. As the Nicolet workers were part of a broader showdown between IP and the United Paper workers' International Union, the article also helps to illuminate the history of a major labor dispute of the 1980s. This paper discusses the 'engendering' of Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs), and the role of organisations such as Oxfam in supporting this process, at the country level and internationally. It is based on an evaluation assessing the extent to which Oxfam Great Britain's (GB's) work on PRSPs has been mainstreaming perspectives on gender and diversity. Analyses of policy documents and interviews with three Norwegian politicians revealed differences in how school leaders were described, positioned and ascribed responsibility in Norwegian education policy between 1990 and 2017. While how politicians positioned school leaders changed substantially during the period, a stable trait was vague descriptions of school leaders' responsibility. In 1990, school leaders were envisioned in a managerial position, above teachers, as employers. A more recent White Paper, from 2017, positioned school leaders closer to the teaching profession. The interviews showed that after the PISA-shock in 2001, politicians united across party lines in a 'new regime of understanding', downplaying traditional conflicts between Norwegian politicians. While Parliamentary politicians rhetorically disagreed, there was, underneath the policy discourse, a growing realpolitik consensus in questions of education policy. The study investigates policy descriptions of school leaders after 1990, when Management by Objectives was introduced in education. To position Norway in the international policy context, we draw on Stephen Ball's concepts fabrication, managerialism, magical solutions and neoliberal performativity. Three periods, with simultaneously appearing residual and emerging tendencies were identified. In conclusion, we question an apparent lack of ambitions for school leadership in Norwegian education policy. The article contributes with new insights into education policy fluctations.
