The paper wasp Polistes riparius is distributed in cold regions of northern East Asia to Russia. P. riparius are characterized by having longer cells than those of the closely related P. chinensis, which has a similar life history, as an adaptation to cold regions. The phylogenetic relationships of paper wasps have recently been studied; however, the genetic diversity and population structure of P. riparius has not been determined. The present study is the first to analyze the complete mitochondrial genome using next generation sequencing of P. riparius collected from Sapporo, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. The genome consisted of a closed loop that was 16,383 bp-long and included 13 protein coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, and one AT-rich control region. The average AT content was 84.54%. The heavy (H)-strand was predicted to have 12 PCGs and 14 tRNA genes, while the light (L)-strand was predicted to contain one PCGs, eight tRNA genes, and two rRNA genes. All PCGs started with ATG. Stop codons were of two types: TAA for 11 genes (ND1, ND2, ND3, ND4L, ND5, ND6, COXI, COXII, COXIII, COB, ATP6 and ATP8) and TAG for two genes (ND3 and ND4). The molecular phylogenetic relationship based on the maximum likelihood method using 13 PCGs was consistent with some previous studies in which a closely relationship between P. riparius and P. jokahamae. Just as they are to the events themselves, the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics have become central to academic research on the Games and their political, social, and cultural roles. And so the recent string of Olympic Games held in East Asia – two of them under the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic – offer the opportunity to think both about region-specific meanings associated with these highly scripted affairs and about the ways they might destabilize broader judgments about the Olympics and their implications. This paper introduces the contributions to this special volume on the Opening Ceremonies at Asia's recent Olympic Games, aiming to draw attention not only to the specific contributions of each paper but also to the themes that they collectively engage. Scholars generally agree that regionalization and regionalism are different phenomena; however, unresolved arguments remain as to whether there is a causal relationship between the two. In particular, whether or not regionalization promotes regionalism is a subject of debate. This paper aims to comprehensively clarify and explain the relationship between regionalization as embodied in trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) and regionalism as characterized by preferential trade agreements (PTAs) using event history analyses of East Asian economic data from 1985 to 2018. The paper concludes that although a positive and significant relationship exists between FDI and some types of PTAs, trade has no relationship with the latter. This conclusion challenges extant literature, which has argued that an increase in PTAs in East Asia (the outcome of regionalism) is the consequence of economic interdependence (regionalization). Moreover, these findings indicate that political factors such as territorial disputes and joint democracy negatively affect certain types of PTAs. This result is contrary to the conventional wisdom that predicts increased cooperation and lower tariffs between democracies and therefore suggests further investigations of the determinants of PTAs. Top-of-atmosphere (TOA) outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), a key component of the Earth's energy budget, serves as a diagnostic of the Earth's climate system response to incoming solar radiation. However, existing products are typically estimated using broadband sensors with coarse spatial resolutions. This paper presents a machine learning method to estimate TOA OLR by directly linking Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) TOA radiances with TOA OLR determined by Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) and other information, such as the viewing geometry, land surface temperature and cloud top temperature determined by Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2). Models are built separately under clear- and cloudy-sky conditions using a gradient boosting regression tree. Independent test results show that the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the clear-sky and cloudy-sky models for estimating instantaneous values are 4.1 and 7.8 W/m2, respectively. Real-time conversion ratios derived from CERES daily and hourly OLR data are used to convert the instantaneous MODIS OLR to daily results. Inter-comparisons of the daily results show that the RMSE of the estimated MODIS OLR is 8.9 W/m2 in East Asia. This contribution takes stock of ASEAN centrality in trade and the emerging policy area of trade infrastructure, also known as connectivity. ASEAN centrality in the East Asian and Indo-Pacific regions has increasingly been called into question, but most studies have failed to specify what ASEAN centrality is and how it can be measured. Outlining both a technical and a substantial definition, this study presents the state of affairs and current trends of ASEAN centrality in the areas of trade and connectivity. Disaggregating the concept, the paper assesses ASEAN's role in the two policy areas as a leader, convener, convenience, and necessity. ASEAN's central position in trade is under threat due to a changing environment, with trade ties increasing between ASEAN's partners. In addition, ASEAN leadership in the RCEP negotiations has been symbolic rather than substantial. In connectivity, ASEAN centrality is even more questionable. According to the author, in a paper published in a previous issue of the journal Population Studies, he questioned the validity of the so-called Far Eastern pattern of mortality as a unique regional mortality model. In her response researcher Noreen Goldman makes three major points. First, the Far Eastern mortality pattern as originally formulated by her differs from that defined by the United Nations Population Division. Second, the method used in author's analysis is different from that of her and not effective in discerning mortality patterns. Third, the Far Eastern mortality pattern as defined by her is indeed a unique mortality model. In this article the author comments on these assertions and further demonstrates that the Far Eastern mortality pattern is not unique regional model. Goldman provides some useful information in her rejoinder, but her major conclusions are unconvincing. While her early investigation into mortality changes in East Asia played a notable role in alerting demographers to the deficiencies of life tables for describing mortality experiences outside of the industrialized world, the claim that the Far Eastern mortality pattern is a distinctive regional mortality model is not well founded.

The financial crises of the late 1990s marked an intellectual watershed for the global economy, and also for regionalism as the Janus face of globalization. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the theory and practice of regional cooperation and integration may evolve along different lines to how it was understood for most of the second half of the twentieth century. In East Asia, in particular, this will mean that the relationship between multilateralism and regionalism will change. The 'East Asian' region will become an increasingly important domain within which to explore enhanced protection against financial crises. What we might call 'monetary regionalism', sceptical western voices notwithstanding, is now firmly on the regional agenda in East Asia. Within conventional political economy, the theory and practice of monetary regionalism is not as easy to understand as traditional, trade-driven, regional integration. Thus one aim of this paper is to outline a theory of monetary regionalism and demonstrate the degree to which it represents a break with understandings of the regional project in East Asia prior to the late 1990s. From its start in 1989, APEC claimed to be a new type of regionalism. The promise was that APEC would promote open regionalism. APEC did not achieve this goal. Nor did it provide support to its Asian members during the financial crises of the late 1990s. At the same time, more traditional (what we might call Balassian) understandings of trade-driven regional integration are showing signs of decreasing importance. There is a growing appeal to trade co-operation, but this is notably an increasing interest in bilateral preferential trading arrangements. This leads to a complex picture of competing regional initiatives across the economic policy spectrum. The paper locates these initiatives in the wider context of the growing politico-economic dialogue between Southeast and Northeast Asia that has developed via the ASEAN+3 process since 1997. The extraordinary growth and reduction in inequalities achieved between the mid-1960s and mid-1990s by the High Performing Asian Economies (HPAEs) — namely Hong Kong, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Taiwan (collectively called "the four tigers"), Japan, China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand — has been discussed at great length in the economic literature. However, no clear explanation has been suggested for the poor performance of other Asian economies, like India, which share the HPAEs geographical proximity and similar economic structures. This paper shows that the stark contrast between the high growth rates and declining income inequalities of HPAEs on one side, and low growth rates and stable (or rising) income inequalities of India and other Asian countries on the other side, may at least in part be explained by the different role that human capital has played in those economies between the mid-1960s and mid-1990s. The International Monetary Fund has been in the spotlight over recent years, particularly in the context of its involvement in the East Asian economies following the 1997-98 crisis. Various reports on aspects of the international financial system have made recommendations for reforming the IMF. Having provided a brief historical and empirical background, this paper identifies the underlying issues in the ongoing debate: does the world still need the IMF, should the Fund be an adjustment or lending institution, what should be its relationship with private capital markets, should it be a crisis averter, crisis lender or crisis manager, does it have a long term lending role in developing countries and is there too much overlap with the World Bank, do Fund programmes work and what is the future for conditionality, should the Fund's organisational structure be reformed, and how should the Fund be financed? Recent crises in East Asia and Latin America have raised questions about the conduct of macroeconomic policy in developing countries. But what is the scope for macroeconomic management in developing countries? Should international financial institutions that assist developing countries rely heavily on it? This paper investigates these issues. It concludes that, while the scope for tight macroeconomic control may be limited in some countries, appropriate structural reform could make the traditional macroeconomic policy tools more effective in the long run. This finding has important implications for reforming the International Monetary Fund. Although conducting macroeconomic policy is not a piece of cake, it should not prove to be an impossible mission if it is accompanied, or even preceded, by measures to strengthen the supply side. The Asian Development Bank (adb) has made increasingly important contributions to Asia's (and particularly East Asia's) regionalism over recent years, and especially since Haruhiko Kuroda became the Bank's president in February 2005. This paper argues that the adb's role here has become more significant because of the strong 'developmental' characteristics of East Asia's new regionalism. This is not least because, as a regional development bank, the adb has a predilection for linking development, regionalism and capacity-building together when promoting regional co-operation and integration (rci) in Asia. We may refer to this as 'developmental regionalism', where rci activities are particularly orientated to enhancing the economic capacity and prospects of less developed countries with the view of strengthening their integration into the regional economy, and thereby bringing greater coherence to regional community building overall. This analysis is partly based on field research undertaken by the author involving a series of research interviews conducted amongst adb officials and with outside analysts of the organisation. It first examines the evolution of the Bank's stance and policies on rci, and the impact made by President Kuroda and the newly formed Office of Regional Integration (orei) in this regard. The main developments of East Asia's new regionalism are then outlined from finance and trade perspectives. It is increasingly apparent that the Asian economic crisis has also led to a serious ideological crisis in the West. Before the collapse there was broad agreement among Western orthodox economists that developing countries should pursue a set of economic policies, often referred to as the 'Washington consensus', which included financial sector liberalisation, privatisation of state-owned enterprises, fiscal discipline and trade, exchange rate and foreign investment deregulation. Since the collapse, however, this consensus has broken down. This paper examines the emergence of the new so-called post-Washington consensus, with its emphasis on governance and social capital. The lexicon of the new policy paradigm underlying this new consensus includes civil society, safety nets, and, especially, governance, to be added to the conventional Washington terminology of open markets, deregulation, liberalisation and structural adjustment. Our central thesis is that this new post-Washington consensus is an attempt to place more emphasis on the political and institutional foundations for programmes of structural reform. This paper examines the implications of the 1997 East Asian crisis for the globalization discourse in the context of three issues: the reversibility of globalization, the role of the state in economic activity, and institutional deficits, domestic and supranational, to manage the burgeoning volumes of cross-border economic exchanges. It focuses on Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and South Korea – the countries most severely affected by the 1997 crisis. It concludes that: (1) globalization is potentially reversible in some issue areas, provided there is the political will to do so; (2) states continue to matter in economic activity; (3) the new system of global commerce and finance must ensure accountability at various levels without undermining the democratic bases of the polity. Previous research has documented a positive effect of nonconformity on the inference of higher status in Western cultures. In Western culture, nonconformity is associated with high status, which is attributed to competence and autonomy. The present research extends research on nonconformity and status perception to the East Asian context by investigating how cultural tightness—the degree to which social norms are strict and deviance from norms is intolerable—at the personal level and national level jointly affects the evaluation of advertisements featuring nonconformity in two East Asian nations: Japan and China. Based on recent studies showing perceived level of tightness being higher in Japan than in China, we posit that consumers' evaluations of nonconformity in advertisements may differ between Japan and China, despite the two countries sometimes being grouped into a homogenous "East Asian" culture. Through four studies, we showed that Chinese consumers with low personal tightness had favorable attitudes toward ads portraying nonconformity and perceived products in these ads as having high status, whereas Chinese consumers with high personal tightness showed favorable attitudes toward ads portraying conformity. In contrast, Japanese consumers showed relatively harsher judgments for nonconforming behavior than Chinese consumers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Language plays an important role in consumers' perceptions and behavior. East Asian languages, such as Chinese, Korean, and Japanese, are unique in that they can be written horizontally and vertically. In this research, we take China as a case example and explore the downstream consequences of writing direction on Chinese consumers' time-related perceptions and brand/product evaluations. Using three studies, we find that a description presenting context from the past is perceived as having a longer past temporal distance when written in a vertical (versus horizontal) orientation. In advertising, writing direction can serve as an effective cue to invoke Chinese consumers' specific time-related perceptions of brands/products. A brand/product is perceived to be more traditional and antique (versus modern and contemporary) when its description is written vertically (versus horizontally). In addition, we demonstrate that an advertisement presented in a vertical (horizontal) direction results in enhanced persuasiveness and more favorable brand/product attitudes when matched with a traditional (modern) brand/product. Porella grandiloba Lindb. is a liverwort species of Porellaceae, primarily distributed in East Asia. Here, we determined the complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of P. grandiloba. The complete cp genome was 121,433 bp in length with a typical quadripartite structure consisting of a large single-copy region (83,039 bp), a small single-copy region (19,586 bp), and two copies of inverted repeat regions (9,404 bp, each). Genome annotation predicted 131 genes, including 84 protein-coding, 36 tRNA, and eight rRNA genes. The maximum likelihood tree indicated that P. grandiloba was sister to P. perrottetiana, which species formed a clade with Radula japonica (Radulaceae). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The advancement of effective spatial planning to support sustainable development and inter-regional cooperation has become an issue of serious concern for regional authorities. Spatial planning research helps to identify economic clusters and analyze their changing spatial patterns, which is important for understanding regional economic space dynamics and potential inter-regional cooperation. To support decision-makers in the development of efficient plans of spatial development encompassing the identification of the best-suited territories, a combined Geographic Information System (GIS) based approach to interpret qualitatively expressed multiple socio-economic scenarios in quantitative map-based terms of graded suitability, and a formalized approach to the socio-economic evaluation of the territory is offered. Based on GIS technology coupled with integrated cellular automata decision analysis techniques, the study provides a method that performs socio-economic assessment of the study area according to the generated scenarios of regional spatial and socio-economic development. The proposed method is applied to Primorsky and Khabarovsk Krais, located in the Russian Far East. Socio-economic scenarios of spatial development initiated by investors and regional authorities were assessed and evaluated. The generated socio-economic scenarios illustrate how the unified set of spatial and socio-economic variables can be linked and used to gain insights into inter-regional socio-economic and spatial development. Riptortus pedestris is a major pest of soybean in East Asia that feeds on maturing seeds, reducing nutritional quality and causing seed abortion. Aggregation pheromone of the bean bug has been conventionally used as a lure for mass-trapping, but the control practices, used by farmers and recommended by the manufacturer can increase infestation in soybean fields. Here we investigated the efficacy of soybean semiochemical blend as a repellent incorporated with an attractant blend to develop a push–pull strategy. The efficacy of potential repellents was tested in a soybean field by evaluating three control strategies: a potential repellent (push), an attractant based on the synergistic effect of synthetic host plant volatiles and the aggregation pheromone (pull), and a combination of the attractant and the potential repellent. We adopted two different monitoring systems, sticky traps and camera traps, to assess the spatial distribution of the bean bugs. The attractant and repellents were strategically deployed, by putting the repellent in the center of soybean plot while the attractants were placed at the edge of the plot. In soybean plots treated with only attractants at the edge, the number of bean bugs was significantly higher in both soybean and edge areas than those of control plots. In contrast, the number of attracted bean bugs to soybean area significantly decreased in the push–pull treated plot, verified by both sticky trap and camera trap methods. In densely populated, highly urbanized regions such as Zhejiang Province (eastern China), species are under enormous environmental pressures resulting from human activities, land use changes, and habitat fragmentation, which affect species composition and species diversity. Although eastern China is one of the most concentrated distribution areas of endemic bryophytes in East Asia, these species are also faced with the threats of habitat inadequacy. In order to get more information on bryophyte habitat and diversity, we investigated species composition, habitat preference, as well as species diversity differences of bryophytes under different habitat conditions in Jiulongshan National Forest Park (JNFP). In particular, the results showed that 108 specimens of bryophyte were collected in total, including 46 species in 32 genera of 21 families. Furthermore, we had found 12 species of bryophytes that had never been recorded before in Zhejiang Province. Remarkably, 40.74% of bryophytes were found to grow on natural rocks, followed by understories and roadside habitats. In addition, the Patrick richness index (R) varied most significantly among different habitats (p < 0.001). In a conservation perspective, natural rocks, roadways and understories should be preserved to protect bryophyte diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface shortwave radiation (SSR) plays an important role in global energy systems. The new generation of geostationary meteorological satellite Himawari-8, with higher spatiotemporal and spectral resolution, offers a new opportunity to retrieve SSR with higher accuracy. In this study, an improved algorithm was applied to estimate instantaneous, hourly, and daily mean SSR using cloud products from the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) onboard the Himawari-8 satellite. The validation against Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) stations showed a root mean square error (RMSE) of 95.8 W m−2 for instantaneous SSR, 82.4 W m−2 for hourly SSR, and 22.8 W m−2 for daily SSR and mean bias error (MBE) of −15.8 W m−2, −14.1 W m−2, and −6.6 W m−2. The validation against China Meteorological Administration (CMA) stations showed a RMSE of 99.5 W m−2 and MBE of −8.2 W m−2 for hourly SSR and RMSE of 27.7 W m−2 and MBE of −3.9 W m−2 for daily SSR, which are generally better than the Himawari-8 SSR product. Overall, the improved algorithm performed well on the new-generation geostationary satellite, with high accuracy and efficiency, and would contribute to surface process research and photovoltaic engineering applications. This review discusses the chemical composition of radish pods and their utilization and health perspective. Radish pods are green vegetables usually consumed in East Asia. Radish pods have gained much interest due to their high chemical composition and antioxidant activity. They contain various chemical compounds, including coumarins, phenols glucosinolates, antioxidants etc. In East Asia, radish pods are usually consumed in households and can also be used commercially as an additive ingredient. However, it can be used in the household as a vegetable, mixed vegetable and additive materials. Radish pods play an important role against cancer, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, inflammation, and allergies via diverse pathways. This study aims to expand research evidence related to investor responses to the timing of corporate action announcements. In contrast to previous studies, this study distinguishes corporate action announcements during the development and realization stage. Furthermore, we will also distinguish the types of corporate actions, consisting of new products and systems and technology innovation. Investor's reactions are measured using cumulative abnormal returns (CAR) with (−5,+5) and (−2,+2) event windows. The Sample is based on 257 corporate action announcements in the automobile manufacturing firms in East Asia from 2017 to 2021. This research found a significant difference in CAR between the development and realization of announcements. Furthermore, it indicates that investors in East Asia react more positively when companies announce the realization of a new product and system and technology innovation rather than when it is still under the planning or development process. This study examined the capabilities of six cryptocurrencies as a hedge and safe haven against the stock indices and foreign exchange rate in the East Asia-5 markets. According, MGARCH-DCC was adopted and implemented in data collection processes together with Rathner and Chiu regression method, which spanned from April 2013 to December 2019. The results revealed that these cryptocurrencies had dissimilar hedging and safe haven capabilities across various stock indices and exchange rates in the East Asia-5 markets. In particular, Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Ethereum offered strong hedge properties on most of the East Asia-5 equity indices. Moreover, Bitcoin and Litecoin only provided a safe haven for Japanese Yen currency, while Taiwanese equity indices and Chinese Yuan currency can be safely protected via an investment into Stellar. Carallia diplopetala (Rhizophoraceae) is an important economic tree species narrowly distributed endemic to East Asia. In this study, We generate the complete chloroplast genome of C. diplopetala using next-generation sequencing technology, which is 162,052 bp in size and consists of a large single copy (LSC) of 89,556 bp and a small single copy (SSC) of 18,814 bp, separated a pair of inverted repeats (IRb and IRa) of 26,841 bp. The overall GC content is 36.4%. A total of 130 genes are annotated, including 83 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNAs, eight rRNAs and two pseudogenes (ψycf1 and ψrps19). The phylogenetic analysis indicated that C. diplopetala and C. brachiate formed a monophyletic clade with strong support and then sister to Pellacalyx yunnanensis. Excess money supply was one factor among several contributing to the 1997 financial crisis in East Asian countries. The crisis resulted in abnormal currency depreciation. Using monthly data over the period 1987-2000 and error correction modeling techniques, we pay tribute to Rudiger Dornbusch by providing strong evidence for his "overshooting" hypothesis in Thailand, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Australian librarians have participated in and contributed to international librarianship for over 125 years. Individual and collective practice is well regarded internationally since it is in dialogue with international concerns, is based on shared values and reaches high standards. Many are willing contributors to international initiatives, contributing on a broad front and sometimes leading discourse in new areas. The profession in Australia is characteristically open to models of practice, ideas and colleagues from elsewhere. It has been enlivened by practitioners from other countries and Australian professionals have contributed elsewhere, especially in Southeast and East Asia. This article studies the history of state intervention in East Asia's varieties of capitalism through a case study of the electric power industry. The reasons for state intervention in China and Japan, their similarities and differences, and their relative importance are described and analysed. The origin and evolution of the different national models of state–business relations in the two countries are influenced by domestic factors such as national defence and internal unification, as well as external circumstances such as colonialism, occupation, and war. Since the early 1980s, it has been accepted widely that there is a Far Eastern pattern of mortality, a pattern characterized by excessively high death rates among older men relative to death rates among younger men and among women. It has been regarded as a unique regional mortality pattern, applying primarily to Far Eastern populations. A re-examination of the mortality data of some Far Eastern populations reveals that changes in both age patterns of and sex differentials in mortality have been widely observed. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been leading economic integration within many structural changes in the world economy. ASEAN, established in 1967, has promoted regional economic integration since 1976. It started to work toward realizing the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) in 1992 and the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2003. ASEAN finally established the AEC at the end of 2015. The AEC is the most developed and advanced economic integration in East Asia. ASEAN is deepening the AEC for the next goal, AEC 2025. ASEAN also led East Asian cooperation initiatives, including ASEAN+3 and ASEAN+6, and ASEAN+1 FTAs. ASEAN proposed the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and led the RCEP negotiations. Currently, rising protectionism and the US–China trade friction has great negative impacts on ASEAN and East Asia. Furthermore, the outbreak of COVID-19 has done great damage to ASEAN and East Asia. ASEAN is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and strengthening the AEC steadily amidst growing protectionism and COVID-19 pandemic. The RCEP agreement was finally signed in November 2020. The RCEP is the first East Asian mega FTA. The RCEP has great meaning in ASEAN and East Asia. ASEAN secured ASEAN centrality in East Asian economic integration. In this paper a mortality pattern is identified which has not previously been described by model mortality schedules and seems to have occurred only in populations in the Far East. Mortality schedules in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Korea during the past several decades have been characterized by excessively high death rates of men at the older ages. This excess mortality has progressively diminished and most recent death rates for men show only slight deviations from West model life tables. An examination of statistics on causes of death suggests that tuberculosis is at least partly responsible for the excess mortality of men.

Severe Helicobacter pylori-linked gastric disorders are especially prevalent in the East Asia region. The ability of H. pylori to cause different clinical outcomes is thought to be associated with unique sets of its genetic features. However, only few genetic features have been definitively linked to specific gastrointestinal pathologies. Genome heterogeneity of clinical H. pylori strains from patients with four different gastric disorders was studied to explore the population structure and molecular genomic features and their association with pathogenicity. Population analysis showed that 92.9% of the Shanghai H. pylori isolates were clustered in the East Asia group. Among 2,866 genes detected in all genomes, 1,146 genes formed the core genome, whereas 209 unique genes were detected in individual disease groups. The unique genes of peptic ulcer and gastric cancer groups represented the inorganic ion transport and metabolism function gene clusters. Sixteen virulence genes were detected with statistically different detection rates among the four disease groups. Furthermore, 127 clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats were found with significantly different rates in the four disease groups. A total of 337 putative genomic islands were identified, and three genomic islands were individually found in more than 10% of strains. The genomic islands included several metabolism-associated genes and many genes with unknown function. In total, 88 sequence types were detected among the 112 Shanghai H. pylori isolates. Our study provides an essential milestone in the mapping of specific genomic features and their functions to identify factors needed to induce specific gastric disorders in H. pylori. Background: The oral microbiome, which consists of various habitats, has been shown to be influenced by smoking. However, differences in the tongue microbiomes of current and former smokers, as well as their resultant functional consequences, have rarely been investigated in East Asian populations. Methods: We used 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing of tongue-coating samples obtained from East Asian subjects who were current, former, or never smokers to identify differences in their tongue microbiomes and related metagenomic functions. Two sets of participants from 2016 to 2017 (n = 657 and n = 187, respectively) were analyzed separately. Results: We found significant differences between the overall microbiome compositions of current versus never smokers (p = 0.0015), but not between former versus never smokers (p = 0.43) based on the weighted UniFrac distance. Twenty-nine of 43 investigated genera showed significantly different expression levels in current versus never smokers. Neisseria and Capnocytophaga were less abundant, and Streptococcus and Megasphaera were more abundant in current smokers. Moreover, the abundances of metagenomic pathways, including those related to nitrate reduction and the tricarboxylic acid cycle, were significantly different between current and never smokers. Whether the Adrenoceptor Beta 3 (ADRB3) gene rs4994 polymorphism could affect the individual risk of childhood and adolescent overweight/obesity remains controversial. This meta-analysis was performed to estimate the prevalence of this polymorphism in overweight/obesity, and test the potential association by summarizing existing evidence. Comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Wanfang, and CNKI databases was performed to identify eligible data sets. Finally, 16 studies involving 5,147 overweight/obese cases and 7,350 non-obese controls were included for further synthetic analyses. Odds ratio (OR) and its corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were statistically calculated. Totally, 69.9% of the included subjects came from East Asia. In the meta-analysis for overall population, statistically significant associations with increased risk of childhood and adolescent overweight/obesity were identified in allele model (OR 1.23, 95% CI 1.10-1.38), heterozygote model (OR 1.39, 95% CI 1.16-1.68), and dominant model (OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.12-1.54). Further stratified analysis according to geographical regions revealed that the statistical significance could only be detected in the East Asia subgroup in allele model, homozygote model, heterozygote model, and dominant model. In summary, our meta-analysis indicated that the ADRB3 rs4994 polymorphism could significantly increase the risk of childhood and adolescent overweight/obesity, especially for the East Asia's population. Asia is a heterogeneous region including countries with distinct features in quite a few facets. This study is designed to unravel the motivations of Chinese FDI in 30 Asian countries (For list of countries see Appendix 1.) during 2003–2016. For estimation, we utilised the Random effect (RE), Fixed effect (FE) and System-GMM (SGMM) methodologies. We transpired that both market and natural resource (mineral richness) seeking motives of Chinese FDI in the whole sample analysis. With respect to income group, we confirmed the market seeking FDI in both high and middle-income countries whereas, mineral richness is priority for Chinese FDI in middle-income group. Thus, Chinese firms targeted middle income developing economies to acquire non-fuel natural resources. Analogously, on the regional basis, the results show that in all regression models, GDP is positive and significant predictor, characterising market seeking FDI by Chinese firms in West, East and South East Asia. In resource seeking motive, among the two types of natural resources, mineral richness affect Chinese FDI positively in East & South East Asia. Taking a historical and comparative view, we explore the long debated cause of the spectacular economic successes of East Asia using land reforms in China and Japan during the 1940-50s. Examining the approach to land reform embodied by technocrats such as Liu Shaoqi in China and Wada Hiroo in Japan in addition to the implementation mechanisms of the policies they adopted, we show that the land reforms developed characteristics of dynamic factor endowment according to the Engerman-Sokoloff hypothesis. Fairly equal land redistribution led to political power equality and improved agricultural productivity and income equality, which is conducive to long-term economic development and the prevention of the Kuznets effect ex ante. Nevertheless, factors such as initial exogenous shocks, insufficient scale of family farming, persistent government support and consequential interest groups obstruct sustainable development of the agricultural sector as well as the generalization of East Asian experiences. Ficus sarmentosa is a common climbing fig tree in East Asia in Moraceae, and its particular geographical distributed pattern and on-going radiation evolution make it significant to explore evolutionary history and biogeography of Ficus. In this work, the first complete chloroplast genome of F. sarmentosa was reported using Illumina NovaSeq high-throughput sequencing data. Totally, the whole chloroplast genome of F. sarmentosa is 160,183 bp in length, which includes large single-copy region of 88,307 bp, small single-copy region of 20,080 bp, and two pairs of inverted repeat regions of 25,898 bp. In addition, GC content and microsatellite makers of the genome were explored. Lastly, phylogenetic analysis demonstrated the closest relationship between F. sarmentosa and F. pumila. Cordyceps militaris, known as Dong-Chong-Xia-Cao, produces the most cordycepin among Cordyceps species and can be cultured artificially. For these reasons, C. militaris is w idely used as herb or functional food in the East Asia. In this study, we developed a new strain of C. militaris that produces higher cordycepin content than parent strains through mating-based sexual reproduction. Twenty parent strains were collected and identified as C. militaris based on internal trasncrived spacer and rDNA sequences. Seven single spores of MAT 1-1 idiomorph and five single spores of MAT 1-2 idiomorph were isolated from 12 parent strains. When 35 combinations were mated on the brown rice medium with the isolated single spores, eight combinations formed a stroma w ith a normal perithecia and confirmed mated strains. High pressure liquid chromatography analysis showed that mated strain KSP8 produced the most cordycepin in all the media among all the tested strains. This result showed due to genetic recombination occurring during the sexual reproduction of C. militaris. The development of C. militaris strain with increased cordycepin content by this approach can help not only to generate new C. militaris strains, but also to contribute to the health food or medicine industry. ContextLigularia fischeri(Ledebour) Turcz. (Compositae) has been used as a leafy vegetable and in traditional medicine to treat hepatic disorder in East Asia. ObjectiveThe present study explores the antioxidant activity of LF aqueous extract on EtOH-induced oxidative stress accompanied by hepatotoxicity bothin vitroandin vivo. Materials and methodsIn vitrostudy using the mouse liver NCTC-1469 cell line was conducted to estimate the cytotoxicity as well as the inhibitory effect of LF extract against alcohol-treated cell damage.In vivostudy used an alcohol-fed Wister rat model orally administered EtOH (3.95 g/kg of body weight/d) with or without LF extract (100 or 200 mg/kg body weight) for 6 weeks. Serum and liver tissue were collected to evaluate hepatic injury and antioxidant-related enzyme activity. ResultsThe EC50value for the DPPH radical scavenging capacity of LF extract was 451.5 μg/mL, whereas the IC50value of LF extract in terms of EtOH-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was 98.3 μg/mL without cell cytotoxicity. LF extract (200 mg/kg body weight) significantly reduced the triglyceride content of serum (33%) as well as hepatic lipid peroxidation (36%), whereas SOD activity was elevated three-fold. LF extract suppressed expression of CYP2E1 and TNF-α, and attenuated alcohol-induced abnormal morphological changes. Discussion and conclusionLF extract attenuated liver damage induced by alcoholic oxidative stress through inhibition of ROS generation, down-regulation of CYP2E1, and activation of hepatic antioxidative enzymes. The complete chloroplast genome of Pollia japonica, a medicinal herb native to East Asia was characterized. The size of the chloroplast genome is 165,076 bp in length with a large single copy (LSC) of 90,722 bp, a small single copy (SSC) of 19,146 bp, and a pair of inverted repeats of 27,604 bp. The chloroplast genome encodes a set of 131 genes, including 85 protein-coding, 38 tRNAs, and 8 rRNAs. Phylogenetic analysis based on complete chloroplast genomes validated the phylogenetic position of P. japonica and showed that the six species from Commelinales were fully resolved in a monophyletic clade sister to the Zingiberales. Species from the Zingiberales and Commelinales formed a molophyletic group sister to the Poales. The chloroplast genome of P. japonica provides an important resource for further study of molecular evolution in the Commelinaceae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Olenecamptus bilobus Fabricius is widely distributed in some parts of Southeast and East Asia whose larvae bore under the bark of at least eleven plant families. The complete mitochondria genome of O. bilobus was 15,262 bp in length, with 37 genes, including 12 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 23 tRNA genes (tRNAs), and 2 rRNA genes (rRNAs). Although many countries in East Asia have achieved high growth rates since the middle of the 20th century, former French colonies in the region have struggled to attain comparable levels of economic development. This article is an attempt to explain this variation in development through a cross-national analysis of economic growth in East Asia for the period from 1970 to 2007. Results suggest that the underperformance of former French colonies is attributable to their inheritance of colonial institutions that have been unfavorable for domestic investment, international trade, and educational attainment. Overall, conclusions lend support for the idea that long-term economic development should be understood in terms of path dependence, and that sustained economic growth requires a concerted effort to restructure growth-adverse institutional arrangements. With case studies on Millennium Development Goal (MDG)-oriented reform projects in Vietnam, this article focuses upon a persistent dilemma in attempting to turn worthy goals into implementable programmes and sustainable results. How to achieve these goals is uncertain, but modern performance management, as expressed in Logical Frameworks, demands certainty. The article suggests how an open management style can allow for pragmatic adaptation to circumstances; or, more radically, how Log Frames could be redesigned to focus upon interpretation of contextual challenges. South Korea is Japan's most logical ally in East Asia. Both nations share the same primary military benefactor, the United States. Their geographic proximity makes them natural allies in offsetting China's growing power and unknown intentions. In spite of the many reasons to ally, relations remain strained, primarily because of Japan's historical occupation of Korea. In this article, the authors examine the political issues that must be resolved for Japan and South Korea to work together and the potential for such reconciliation in light of South Korea's on-again/off-again drift away from the United States and Japan's open embrace of U.S. protection and occasional political distancing. The article focuses on developmental state concepts and its evolution into a working form. It states that developmental states were conceived as an interventionist state that achieved goals through tax credits and breaks, subsidies, export promotion, import controls and financial and credit policies. It presents a case study of the developmental state in Latin America, including the use of government intervention to build infrastructures such as railways and transport roads, promoting skilled labor immigration, and protecting export sectors. It comments on stages of development states in Latin America starting after Latin American nations gained their independence until the Great Depression and industrialization after the Great Depression until the 1960s.

The dollar dominance in East Asia has depended on its regional support. Japan's supportive policy toward the dollar, however, shifted in the late 1990s as the Japanese government began to address the region's heavy dependence on the dollar, which was regarded as one (but an important one) of the causes of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis (AFC), by promoting the use of the yen in the region and regional monetary initiatives. Despite emerging signs of those challenges, Japan's domestic resistance and the region's power rivalry between Japan and China still makes the dollar the currency of choice in the medium term future.
