Publications in Renal Failure in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED) between 1992 and 2021 were analyzed. Six publication indicators: total, independent, collaborative, first author, corresponding author, and single author publications as well as their related citation indicators, were used to compare performances of countries, institutes, and authors. Comparison of the highly cited papers and journal's impact factor (IF) contributors was discussed. In addition, the main research topics in the journal were presented. Results show that China published the most total articles and reviews, as well as the first-author papers and corresponding-author papers in the journal. The Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan ranked the top in five publication indicators: total, single-institution, inter-institutionally collaborative, first author, and corresponding-author papers. A low percentage of productive authors emerged as a journal IF contributor. Similarly, only a limited relationship between highly cited papers and IF contributing papers was found. Publications related to hemodialysis, chronic kidney disease, and acute kidney injury were the most popular topic, while meta-analysis was new focus in the last decade in the journal. Design/methodology/approach: This paper used pervious related to aviation literatures to summarise and viewpoint the current aviation environment and conduct the risks, value, and resilience of grounded aircraft-value in the post-pandemic era. Purpose: Throughout 2020 to date, this major event, known as SARS CoV-2, has had a decisive impact on global air transport. Since the outbreak began, passenger travel has declined due to infection risks and new laws and travel restrictions. Dependent Surveillance-Despite the recent recovery in demand from the airline industry, risks posed by new models remain a concern for many airlines. From the data of Broadcasting (ADS-B) is helpful for preliminary observation and judgment of the value level of a certain type of aircraft. Findings: This paper not only focuses on the aviation environment, but discusses aviation highlights such as international perspectives, domestic (i.e. Taiwan) perspectives, and several issues between industry and academic perspectives. Research limitations/implications: The next phase of research needed in this area is a closer assessment of the value of aircraft in the development of global networks, which could have important policy implications for aircraft manufacturers and the aviation industry. This paper compares the cases of Seoul, Taipei and Keelung to illustrate the dynamics of the local state in leading the process of cultural preservation. We argue that political ambitions of local leaders, driven by economic and political incentives to boost local development, create policy networks centered around local bureaucracies. Various actors, such as local political elites, local bureaucracies, civic groups and developers, are involved in the process of political and economic entangling. The cultural preservation projects are thus the reflection of the political interpretation of memory, as well as the realization of local state power to implement innovative goals of urban rebranding and regeneration. The Korean and Taiwanese cases demonstrate that political functions, such as regime legitimacy and the formation of new identities, have been instrumental in the process of urban regeneration. This paper brings the "politics" back into local developmentalism in the democratic societies of South Korea and Taiwan. This paper also argues that central-local relationship matters as well. The local developmental states are not totally isolated from political entanglements at the central level. Neuroctenus taiwanicus Kormilev, 1955 is a flat-bodied and enigmatic bug that was first discovered on the island of Taiwan, China. In this study, the whole mitochondrial genome of N. taiwanicus was sequenced and annotated for the first time, and its genomic data were uploaded to Genbank feedback number OR675057. The mitochondrial genome of N. taiwanicus is 15,340 bp in length, a typical circular DNA encoding 37 genes and a control region with 68.4% AþT content. The phylogeny reveals the taxonomic status of N. taiwanicus, which is most closely related to N. yunnanensis, and demonstrates the sister relationship among Neuroctenus, Mezira, and Brachyrhynchus. In addition, the results also confirm that Aradinae and Calisiinae are the earliest branching and more primitive in the family Aradidae, which is consistent with the analysis of the traditional classification. Recently, purchasing intention towards green products has gained global attention due to their extensive use and high environmental issues. Thus, the current article investigates environmental concern, environmental knowledge, green product, and eco-innovation influence on the green purchase intention of green products in Taiwan industry. The research also examines the mediating role of consumers' attention among environmental concerns environmental knowledge, green products eco-innovation, and green purchase intention. The article used questionnaires to collect the primary data from the sampled population. To examine the hypothesis, the PLS methodology was adopted. The results indicated that environmental concern, environmental knowledge, green product, and eco-innovation have a positive association with green purchase intention. The findings also exposed that consumer attention significantly and positively mediates environmental concern, environmental knowledge, green product, eco-innovation, and green purchase intention. The Sino – Japanese Peace Treaty signed in April 1952 not only set the basic framework for diplomatic relations between China, Japan, and Taiwan until 1972, but was also significant in substantially determining the legal status of Chinese residents in Japan during the same period. Subsequently, this paper analyzes both the legislative process in Japan leading up to the Sino – Japanese Peace Treaty and the process of diplomatic negotiations between Japan and China and identifies the following points. In the process of legislating the Immigration Control Ordinance, the Japanese government, while recognizing that Chinese mainlanders in Japan were Chinese nationals, considered them to be outside the legal jurisdiction of the Republic of China (R.O.C.) government, and while recognizing the jurisdiction of the R.O.C. government over Formosans in Japan to a certain extent, interpreted "the ultimate nationality of Taiwanese people has not been determined" from the standpoint that the legal status of Taiwan was undetermined. The R.O.C. government was forced to accept the Japanese government's treatment regarding the legal status of Chinese residents in Japan because it was unable to have its sovereignty over Taiwan and the Penghu Islands clearly stated in the articles of the Sino – Japanese Peace Treaty out of consideration for the United States, which acted as an intermediary in the negotiations of the treaty. The use of information technology during the COVID-19 pandemic raises significant questions around the protection of personal data in a disaster. This paper considers how the clear benefits of using and sharing such data in disaster scenarios can be achieved while recognising an individual's right to privacy through examining the experiences of Taiwan and New Zealand. These states represent two successful COVID-19 response strategies which utilised different approaches to the use of technology. In Taiwan, the response made significant use of personal data and information technology. New Zealand, by contrast, has relied upon stringent lockdowns and extreme limits upon personal freedoms. The paper considers the different approaches to data and privacy that underpinned these responses and considers whether New Zealand can learn from the Taiwanese experience in future disaster planning. In doing so, the paper concludes by examining the wider question of when and if the community's expectation of a safe environment should trump the rights of individuals to retain personal data both in the context of pandemics and in other emergency or disaster scenarios. After the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) gained power in 2016, the cross-strait communication channels were gradually closed. The mainland's Taiwan policy was changed, resulting in an internalization of the policy-making process. This paper manifests the internalization through the case study of the "31 Preferential Policies for Taiwan" launched in 2018. This new Taiwan policy originated from the local governments' initiative to establish local policy pools that are partially transformed into the new Taiwan policy, hence the implementation nationwide. This research incorporated virtual currency development factors into the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) and interpreted the effects of bitcoin and fin-tech on the capital market through a deduction of the portfolio theory and innovation diffusion theory (IDT) on changes to financial stocks' value. This paper examined a total of 67,166 panel data of financial stocks in the two emerging markets of Taiwan and China between July 2016 and April 2019, presenting the following significant findings. (1) Financial stocks in Taiwan's market are more greatly shocked by the bitcoin and interaction effect between bitcoin and fin-tech than those in China's market. (2) Even after changing proxy variable or autocorrelation and heteroskedasticity are considered, the asymmetric shocks on financial stocks in Taiwan's market are still great. (3) The effects of the two variables of bitcoin and interaction with fin-tech on financial stocks are consistently important as the three-factor CAPM model. (4) Transmitted by the changes in currency supply and demand as well as exchange rate volatilities, the spillover effects of virtual currencies and financial innovation indirectly change the currency multiplier of the home country, investors' sensibility to interest rates, and balance of import and export trades and may eventually impact the gross outputs and inflation of individual economies. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a subject that has garnered considerable attention in recent years. This study conducts the empirical study by using a real options perspective to examine whether a company's CSR commitment tends to increase its market value. According to Taiwan's CommonWealth Magazine, this study distinguishes CSR and non-CSR companies. The paper estimates and compares the real options values of CSR and non-CSR companies and shows that high percentage of the company value is attributed to real options. This study finds that a company's commitment to fulfilling its social responsibility increases its real options value and that the higher the number of CSR Awards won by a company, the higher its real options value. Compared with 10 years ago, investors now pay more attention to companies' CSR performance. In addition, the higher a company's size, systematic risk, fixed asset ratio, debt ratio, or skewness in stock returns, the higher a real options value is likely to be. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we suggest a technique to quantify model risk, particularly model misspecification for binary response regression problems found in financial risk management, such as in credit risk modelling. We choose the probability of default model as one instance of many other credit risk models that may be misspecified in a financial institution. By way of illustrating the model misspecification for probability of default, we carry out quantification of two specific statistical predictive response techniques, namely the binary logistic regression and complementary log–log. The maximum likelihood estimation technique is employed for parameter estimation. The statistical inference, precisely the goodness of fit and model performance measurements, are assessed. Using the simulation dataset and Taiwan credit card default dataset, our finding reveals that with the same sample size and very small simulation iterations, the two techniques produce similar goodness-of-fit results but completely different performance measures. However, when the iterations increase, the binary logistic regression technique for balanced dataset reveals prominent goodness of fit and performance measures as opposed to the complementary log–log technique for both simulated and real datasets. Short-term hourly reliable prediction of significant wave height is an important research topic in coastal engineering. Many researchers have carried out in-depth studies in many ocean regions. Generally, most of this work is implemented through numerical models. However, as for numerical models, with the increase of hourly prediction duration, the accumulation of wave randomness leads to the poor prediction effect. In this paper, four buoy stations in the Taiwan Strait are taken as the research objects. We propose a significant wave height prediction algorithm, which combines numerical weather prediction model WRF and deep-learning model, called WRF-CLSF(Convolution-LSTM-FC). WRF can forecast 24-h wind speed in real-time, based on a variety of interpretable physical mechanisms. CLSF aims to extract the information of historical wind-wave interaction scale and the trend of wind-wave coherence, with the help of convolution operation and the time series model(LSTM), respectively. In the experiment, the proposed model was compared with the state-of-the-art prediction model. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, I explain the nature of the education and engagement of young Chinese minorities in north China under Japanese occupation during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Second, I examine what influence the occupation policy of Japanese puppet government had on forming Hui identity. During the Republic of China, the minority Hui were facing social inequality. Japan focused on the affairs of the Hui people and implemented a policy that gave them preferential treatment to advance the division and control of China. In 1938 the General Federation of Islam in China was founded under the Provincial Government of the Republic of China to advance the "Muslim campaign" of the Japanese Army. Its objectives were to support the regime, oppose communism, and the Young Muslim Association of China was established, training of young Muslims for military service. But young Hui trained in such association often rebelled against the Japanese occupation, and the Hui people who received modern education used education as a tool to fulfill their own goals instead. Therefore, the Hui established a dual identity of being Muslim and Chinese, and they chose to side with China rather than Japan. This study focuses on the impact of the unexpected events of the marine casualties in Taiwan international ports and aims to develop an undesirable-output Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model to evaluate navigation safety and acquires the improvement in marine casualties that affect the performance of port safety. Moreover, the major difficulties in this study are the data collection and classification for each marine casualties, the selection of key parameters and weighted value for assessment model. Then, the undesirable-output DEA can conquer the dilemma and render marine casualties be negative factor. This paper searches the main cause about marine casualties adopted by R.O.C. Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC). Based upon 899 sets of marine casualties collected from 2010 to 2019 in Taiwan international ports water, an assessment model comprising four international ports is built, each of which is composed of an input variable and eleven undesirable-output variables. Finally, the results show that: (1) The method which was demonstrated on Taiwan international ports indicates navigation safety ordering is Hualien port, Keelung port, Taichung port and Kaohsiung port. (2) All of the marine casualties, collision and structural damage/ship sinking are the severest casualty that should be improved. Furthermore, the findings of this study correspond to reality so it can help the port authority to take effective risk control actions to increase the navigation safety of international ports. This paper investigates the existence of an optimal debt ratio for the electronic listed firms in Taiwan, using balanced panel data for a sample of 143 selected electronics companies listed in the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE) from the first quarter of 1999 to the third quarter of 2004. The result shows that there is a single threshold effect of debt ratio on firm value when return on equity (ROE) is used to proxy firm value. Furthermore, based on our combined findings of ROE and earnings per share (EPS) triple threshold estimations, we find that the appropriate debt ratio range for the electronic listed firms in Taiwan should not be over 51.57 percent or below 12.37 percent. To ensure and enhance the firm's value, the optimal range of debt ratio should be within 12.37 percent and 28.70 percent. Over the past four decades, two forms of lesbian community have come gradually into existence in Taiwan: the T-Po community which revolves around butch-femme distinctions, and the feminist lesbian community which advocates women's liberation through same-sex practises. This paper examines the ways in which each community has come into formation. It highlights how, via a process of 'domestic colonialism', the feminist lesbian community has appropriated many of the gender and sexual roles performed by the T-Po community so as to establish a global and progressive 'queer' identity. The paper end by exploring a number of issues that remain problematic in Taiwan's feminist lesbian discourse today. Given the importance of government advertising regulation, there has been limited research exploring the common ground between government regulations in different countries. This paper begins by proposing a theoretical framework for comparing government regulations, and then uses the framework to analyze the similarities and differences between advertising regulations in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. This paper reports on the application of two-dimensional Principal Component Analysis (2DPCA) to characterize the two dimensional total electron content (TEC) in the ionosphere associated with the Xiaolin mudslide at 10:09 August, 8, 2009 (UTC) in the aftermath of Typhoon Morakot. Our results revealed a five minute TEC anomaly over the location of the Xiaolin mudslide (23.162°N and 120.644°E) from 10:15 to 10:20 (UTC). This paper tries to address the cause of the TEC anomaly, in particular considering high-speed shock waves in the form of an impulse wave produced by mudslide, more dense TEC data are still necessary to confirm this hypothesis. This paper uses an exogenous increase in income for a specific subgroup to explore the extent to which higher income leads to higher levels of health and well-being. In 1995, the Taiwanese government implemented the Senior Farmer Welfare Benefit Interim Regulation (SFWBIR) that was a pure cash injection to senior farmers. A difference-in-differences (DiD) approach is used on survey data from the Taiwanese Health and Living Status of Elderly in 1989 and 1996 to evaluate the short-term effect of the SFWBIR on self-assessed health, depression, and life satisfaction (LS). Senior manufacturing workers are employed as a comparison group for senior farmers in the natural experiment. This paper provides evidence that the increase in income caused by this pension reform significantly improved the mental health of senior farmers by reducing 1.697 points of the depression scale in DiD and 2.178 points in the robust estimation; however, it had no significant short-term impact on self-assessed health or LS. In a time of rapid technological change, there is a need to provide students with relevant learning opportunities to support the development of their transferable skills. Set in a higher education context in Taiwan, this study sought to investigate how students perceived their engagement with a task-based, multimedia project within an English as a foreign language (EFL) course. Participants were 73 third-year undergraduate university students who were engaged in an 18-week task-based video-making project as part of the EFL course. Data, which were analysed qualitatively, included students' reflective essays and post-course transcribed interviews with 15 of the students. Overall, the students felt that participating in the task-based project had enhanced their literacy competencies through the process of gathering relevant information; supported their learning motivation and engagement as they sought to discover the necessary resources to generate their videos; and fostered their awareness of how they could apply the knowledge and skills they developed in the course to new contexts. Task-based, digital projects can provide one way of helping students to develop transferable skills. As technology continues to evolve, this study highlights the need to consider more fully, in the context of tertiary education, how best to support students to acquire and hone the competencies that they will require in employment. Existing research on outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas focuses on meteorological factors such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and radiation on sunny or cloudy days. However, climate conditions before, during, and after rainfall events can cause changes in meteorological factors in subtropical regions. Rainfall is an atmospheric condition with a large influence on thermal comfort, particularly in subtropical areas with abundant rain. Big data on temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, precipitation, and total cloud cover from the Taipei Weather Station under the Central Weather Administration from June to August each year from 2011 to 2020 were analyzed, dividing the data into categories based on precipitation. Using a k-means clustering algorithm, we quantified the relationships between meteorological factors and apparent temperature as well as physiological equivalent temperature in different rainfall scenarios. The results indicate that rainfall in the summers of subtropical oceanic climates indeed influence outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas: 37.7% of the rainfall weather patterns improved thermal comfort and 62.3% of the rainfall weather patterns reduced thermal comfort. RWP 46 represent the weather conditions that most significantly improve thermal comfort, at 1:00 PM, with a rainfall of 15 mm, there is a decrease in ΔAT by 14.4 ℃ and ΔPET by 22.1 ℃. With the hot, humid, and rainy climate conditions in Taiwan, apparent temperature is the most accurate index of thermal comfort. KEY POLICY HIGHLIGHTS Rainfall events may affect outdoor thermal comfort in subtropical cities. Different rainfall weather patterns have different impacts on urban outdoor thermal environments. 62.3% of rainfall weather patterns resulted in worsened thermal comfort, for low and concentrated rainfall resulting in a stuffier thermal environment. This paper investigates market behaviors (such as volatility, depth, and volume) and order-flow decomposition in a pure limit order futures market, the Taiwan Futures Exchange. The results are different from those in equity markets due to relatively high adverse selection costs in futures markets. We show that a volatility (depth) increase is followed by a depth (volatility) decrease; a market order increase (decrease) subsequently induces higher (lower) volatility; and a limit order increase (decrease) results in more (less) market orders and limit orders. When the upside (downside) volatility rises, buyers decrease (increase) subsequent limit bid orders, and sellers increase (decrease) limit ask orders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Strengthening the accountability of government officials to achieve public satisfaction in democratic countries has been a crucial issue. We study the issue empirically using the concept of national governance based on a case study of the key Taiwanese financial regulator, namely, the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC). This paper integrates theories of resource-based views, trust, and corporate governance to motivate the empirical analysis. The findings show that accountability is positively related to public satisfaction. Capability and integrity have a positive relation to the accountability of the regulator, suggesting that one of the most effective ways to get public satisfaction is to recruit staff with capability and integrity. This paper investigates the performance effects of initial public offering policies in Taiwan's stock market from 1997 to 2006. We divide the listing channels into six models and test performance differences under each model, using nonparameter tests. We find that indirect listing methods perform better than do direct methods. The results suggest that the longer the processes take for corporations to terminate one market and move to the target final market, the better the firm performance. The results have important policy implications for the ability of a newly established emerging stock market initiative to channel capital into financial markets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the price comovement of stocks actively traded by institutions and the investment performance of foreign and domestic institutional investors in Taiwan's stock markets during periods of large market movements. Stocks of small size, high share turnover, and high return volatility tend to move together with the market when markets rise sharply. In short-term holdings, foreign investors and domestic mutual funds can outperform the market by trading small-size, high-turnover, and high-volatility stocks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Angelica hirsutiflora Liu et al.1961, is a perennial herb in the Apiaceae family that is endemic to Taiwan. In this study, the complete circular chloroplast genome of A. hirsutiflora was reconstructed and annotated using Illumina sequencing. The size of the chloroplast genome is 154,266 bp, consisting of two inverted repeats (IRs, 25,075 bp) separated by a large single-copy region (LSC, 86,569 bp) and a small single-copy region (SSC, 17,547 bp). The GC content of the chloroplast genome is 37.6%. There are 114 different genes in the chloroplast genome of A. hirsutiflora, including 80 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes and four rRNA genes. A maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analysis showed that A. hirsutiflora forms a distinct clade, and separated from other species within the genus Angelica. The service sector plays a key role to employment growth and increased public well-being in OECD countries. The service industries contributed more than 63% of GDP in 2016 and have become the core of economy in Taiwan. Within the service sectors, knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) particularly illustrate higher levels of productivity and profitability. Moreover, due to lack of the clear measurements of the knowledge intensity with prior investigations in KIBS, the aim of this article is to explore the knowledge intensity of Taiwan's KIBS. This study then further probes into the relationship between knowledge intensity and economic performance. Panel data from 13 service sectors in Taiwan during the period 2007–2015 is analysed with a fixed effect model. This empirical research shows four findings: first, 13 industries are classified into three groups as high, low, and no level of knowledge intensity; second, most of the level of knowledge intensity has been increased from stage one to stage two; third, education level and vocational training rate positively influence productivity; and, finally, the percentage of knowledge workers and vocational training rate have a positive effect on the margin rate. Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) implies high morbidity and mortality. The assessment of covert HE (CHE) [i.e. minimal HE (MHE) plus grade 1 HE] is often neglected in Taiwan. Therefore, the aim was to investigate the potential of the animal naming test (ANT1 and simplified ANT1 (S-ANT1)) for assessing CHE in Chinese-speaking regions, specifically Taiwan. A prospective cohort study was conducted, comprising 65 cirrhotic patients and 29 healthy controls (relatives of the patients). Patients were followed up every three months and censored after two years or until death. Hospitalization for overt HE (OHE) and mortality were considered. All subjects underwent ANT1, psychometric HE score (PHES), and mini-mental state examination (MMSE). The patients underwent an electroencephalogram (EEG) to detect slowing indicative of MHE. Cut-off values for ANT1 and S-ANT1 were assessed by ROC analysis and Youden's index, considering CHE as a reference. The prognostic values for OHE and OHE-free survival were assessed. Preliminary analysis confirmed that PHES ≤-4 is a good discriminant point for abnormal results. CHE was found in 29 patients: 9 had MHE (PHES ≤ -4 or altered EEG) and 20 had grade 1 HE. ANT1 and S-ANT1 were found to have diagnostic values for CHE: AUC = 0.807, 0.786; cut off: 18 and 19, respectively. ANT1 and S-ANT1 were found to have prognostic value for OHE, number of hospitalization episodes for OHE, and OHE recurrence-free survival. ANT1 shows promise as a tool for CHE detection, quantification, and follow-up in Taiwan and other Chinese-speaking regions. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is still ongoing and currently the most striking epidemic disease. With the rapid global spread of SARS-CoV-2 variants, new antivirals are urgently needed to avert a more serious crisis. Inhibitors from traditional medicines or natural plants have shown promising results to fight COVID-19 with different mechanisms of action. To provide comprehensive and promising approaches to the medical community in the fight against this epidemic by reviewing potential plant-derived anti-SARS-CoV-2 inhibitors. Structural databases such as TCMSP (), TCM Database @ Taiwan (), BATMAN-TCM () and TCMID (), as well as PubMed, Sci Finder, Research Gate, Science Direct, CNKI, Web of Science and Google Scholar were searched for relevant articles on TCMs and natural products against SARS-CoV-2. Seven traditional Chinese medicines formulas have unique advantages in regulating the immune system for treating COVID-19. The plant-derived natural compounds as anti-SARS-CoV-2 inhibitors were identified based on 5 SARS-CoV-2 key proteins, namely, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), 3 C-like protease (3CLpro), papain-like protease (PLpro), spike (S) protein, and nucleocapsid (N) protein. A variety of natural products, such as flavonoids, terpenoids, phenols, and alkaloids, were identified, which could be used as potential SASR-Cov-2 inhibitors. This study attempts to develop a supplier's risk sharing contract to gain an understanding of risk sharing for the automotive industry in Taiwan. The existing research has examined revenue-sharing contracts between retailers and manufacturers. However, the study of suppliers' risk-sharing contracts between manufacturers and suppliers is neglected. This paper first employs a double moral hazard framework to obtain an optimal contract, and then uses the derived model to establish research hypotheses. The empirical analysis shows that manufacturers offer suppliers a type of supplier's risk sharing contract while maintaining long-term relationships with suppliers. The results also support the hypotheses that manufacturers absorb more risk when the suppliers are more uncertainty, more risk aversion and lower moral hazard, and suggest that manufacturers would be willing to absorb more risk as they deepen their involvement in the technological development of suppliers. Background: The impact of global warming on population health is a growing concern and has been widely discussed. The issue of heat stress disorders and consequent productivity reduction among workers has not yet been widely addressed. Taiwan is an island straddling the Tropic of Cancer in the West Pacific and has both subtropical and tropical climates. As of 2008, the economy of Taiwan accounts for 1.1% of the world gross domestic product at purchasing power parity and is listed as 19th in the world and eighth in Asia, according to International Monetary Fund data. Objective: The aim of this paper is to identify occupations at risk and the potential health impacts of heat on workers in Taiwan. Design: Historical data relating to meteorology, population, the labour force and economy were obtained from publicly available databases from the Taiwanese government. Results: Hot seasons with an average maximum temperature above 30°C and relative humidity above 74%, lasting for four to six months from May to October, pose health threats to construction, farming and fishery workers. In particular, populations of ageing farmers and physically overloaded construction workers are the two most vulnerable worker categories in which high temperature impacts on health and productivity. Conclusions: Currently, regulations and preventive actions for heat relief are difficult to enforce for several reasons, including lack of equipment for measuring environmental conditions, lack of awareness of potential hazards and strict time constraints imposed on workers. There is an urgent need to systematically and comprehensively assess the impact of a warming climate on workers' health and productivity to provide effective prevention strategies for a better working and living environment in Taiwan. This paper investigates whether and why qualified foreign institutional investors (QFIIs) in Taiwan herd when picking stocks. The evidence shows that QFIIs herd in Taiwan's securities market: They follow each other into and out of the same securities. We identify how the herding behavior forms and how it changes over time. The results suggest that there is an industry effect when QFIIs pick up stocks. They herd on securities classified in specific industries and also prefer stocks with high past returns as well as large firm size, supporting the argument that QFIIs are momentum traders. To reduce market volatility observed at the close of trading and to enhance the fairness of the closing price, the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE) changed the way it executed its closing transactions by instituting a five-minute closing call auction. This paper examines the effectiveness of this new mechanism for the TSE. The empirical results show that the closing call has effectively reduced market volatility at closing and enhanced market efficiency by reducing noise in stock closing prices. However, market liquidity has declined, primarily due to the actions of individual investors. Because the limit order book is fully opaque for the five-minute call period, investors may close their position earlier than the closing period to avoid additional risk. This paper investigates whether and how futures market sentiment and stock market returns heterogeneously affect the trading activities of institutional investors in the spot market in Taiwan. Our empirical results suggest that foreign investors are net sellers whenever futures market sentiment is bullish and net buyers when investor sentiment is bearish. The two types of domestic institutional investors have poor sentiment timing abilities and the price-pressure effect may account for the behavioral differences among institutional investors. In addition, all three institutional investors are momentum traders. Nevertheless, the momentum trading of foreigners is consistent with an information-based model and that of two local institutional investors, as behavior-based models suggest. This indicates that the same trading momentum strategy can lead to different outcomes for different investors, and both information- and behavior-based momentum trading can exist contemporaneously in the Taiwanese stock market. Applying competency models to identify and develop capabilities of civil servants is now a leading strategy for every government. However, an ideal competency model usually contains too many intended competencies, impeding implementation. Recently, some scholars and experts argued that there is a maximum of eight competencies for effective assessment. Hence, how to simplify a set of competencies becomes an important issue. This study is presented as a test case to extend practical applications of rough set theory (RST) in the human resource field of Government. A well-known data mining technique, RST is a relatively new approach to this problem and is good at data reduction in qualitative analysis. Hence, the rough set approach is suitable for dealing with the qualitative problem in simplifying a set of competencies. This paper slimmed a set of competencies using RST, thus helping the Taiwan Government to better understand the perceived competency levels of its civil servants. This paper documents prevailing mispricing of research and development (R&D) investments in the Taiwan stock market, a rapidly emerging and electronics-dominated market. Applying stock return data from July 1988 to June 2005, we observe that R&D-intensive stocks tend to outperform stocks with little or no R&D. The R&D-intensity effect cannot be attributed fully to firm size and seasonal effects. The R&D-associated anomaly not only exists but also persists for up to three years. The market apparently undervalues R&D-intensive firms and overvalues non-R&D-intensive firms. Finally, the R&D anomaly is clearer for firms in the electronics industry after 1996. This paper explores stock repurchase and agency issues in an emerging market with special regulations. Using match samples, agency-related variables are investigated for pre- and postannouncement periods. Our empirical evidence demonstrates that stock repurchase is related to agency cost mitigation. Agency problems are also significantly related to the preannouncement undervaluation of stock repurchase, after controlling for the effects of growth opportunity and asymmetric information. This paper examines the hypothesis that the timing of lockup expiration is crucial to earnings management (EM) behavior in the period after an initial public offering (IPO). Taiwan's unique two-stage lockup regulations make the Taiwanese sample an excellent candidate for examining this hypothesis. Three main results are reached. First, we find positive discretionary accruals (DAs) from the IPO quarter to the quarter after the expiration of the first-stage lockup. The DA in the quarter of the second-stage lockup expiration is significantly positive. The evidence shows that the lockup provision is key in the findings of significant EM in the IPO year and the following year. We also find a positive association between DAs in first-stage lockups and subsequent insider selling activity, indicating that insiders' selling after lockup expiration accounts for EM in the lockup period. In this paper, we propose a problem-solving tool referred to as 'Project Advancement (PA)'. The focal point of PA is to aid managers to: (1) identify the problem-solving situation correctly with which they are faced and (2) build an effective resource-planning model to minimize their disappointment and frustration. PA suggests a specific seven-step list to realize such a focal point. In order to help readers to understand PA comprehensively, this paper utilizes a simple scenario referring to the case of air transportation between Taiwan and China. We explain how to apply PA to solving a multi-air-route, quality-improvement, and budget-allocation problem through step-by-step deduction. Five index derivatives with the same expiration days, settlement days, and settlement systems have been consecutively traded on the Taiwan Futures Exchange (TAIFEX) since 1998. This paper examines the expiration effects of TAIFEX index derivatives on the underlying stock market between 1998 and 2002. Our empirical findings show no significant expiration effects on the expiration day, but evidence demonstrates that expiration effects have strengthened as more relative index derivatives are listed on the TAIFEX. Meanwhile, the expiration effects seem to shift to the opening of the settlement day. In general, the expiration effects in Taiwan are not as significant as those in U.S. markets but are stronger than those in the Hong Kong market. The aim of this paper is to use a new approach of performance evaluation, Grey Relation Analysis (GRA), which is a concept borrowed from the study of industry and increasingly applied to commerce. GRA is used to evaluate the relative performance of three investment Taiwanese trust firms, which have been reorganized into banks. The result of the study indicates that although the sample size is small and the distribution of data is unknown, GRA can still be successfully used in evaluating bank performance. A growing mass of research contributes to our understanding of how biological and cultural diversity are related in complex and important ways. This paper presents an assembling process of biodiversity and cultural diversity on an island, Kin-men (Quemoy), based on 1600 years of its environmental history. The study shows that the island's biocultural assemblages are a result both of external relations with the island's surrounding environment and internal relations within the island's changing human ecology. Distant political powers and economic forces are the two major external influences that have affected the flow of natural and cultural elements to and from the island, while ‘screening effects’ and ‘isolation effects’ are two factors that explain internal interactions. The island's biocultural assembling processes reveal that the openness of the island facilitates increase in the diversity of biocultural elements, while its less disturbed isolated condition fosters natural succession and co-evolution. The study suggests that biocultural assemblages and the associated processes of co-evolution and nature–society interactions are accomplished through the intermittent opportunities purposively provided by or inadvertently found in the openings and closures of boundaries, setting the scene for both boundary crossings and bounded shelter, by intent or chance. This paper identifies the major precursors and pathways to prostitution for contemporary Taiwanese girls and the socioeconomic and cultural changes that have facilitated the shift in pathways over the past 10 years. Special attention is paid to the case of Taiwanese aborigines, who have particularly suffered systemic disruption due to prostitution. Analysis of case files and interviews provide quantitative and qualitative data that highlight the role of filial piety and the shift from indenture to runaway as the major pathway in Taiwan. Discussion includes relation of these findings to juvenile entry into prostitution in other countries, directions for future research, and policy recommendations for Taiwan's government. Although advanced driver-assistance systems (ADASs) provide many benefits, there is less information on user resistance to innovation. Thus, this study integrates prior research results to draw up a well-established multi-order construct conceptualisation research framework and to deepen the comprehension of the involvement-resistance-innovativeness behaviour in the ADAS adoption context. Based on the hypotheses, an academic model was developed and tested using a large cross-sectional study of 527 ADAS users from Taiwan, using structural equation modelling. The results indicate that it seems to be suitable to acquire access to innovative behaviour from the consumer resistance viewpoint so as to accomplish greater explanatory power in the three orders adoption models. Numerous barriers, however, still hinder the ADAS's widespread acceptance. Furthermore, the outcomes affirm a meaningful interaction effect of the consumer innovation resistance and were aware of the impetus on actualised innovativeness, and further realised that it substantially reduces the consumers' eagerness to hunt for hedonist innovativeness and to buy for the social innovativeness, thereby preventing actualised innovativeness. Because of the complex and special political relationship between Mainland China and Taiwan. Cross-Strait trade is influenced by many variables, there has been a view that trade relations between Mainland China and Taiwan are more influenced by political factors. However, between the Cross-Strait, the trade volume has generally shown an upward development trend, especially since 2001. Therefore, the political factors can hardly explain the facts, and economic factors, especially industrial structure factors in Mainland China play an important role in Cross-Strait trade. Based on the small sample data since 2001, this study employed Grey Relational Analysis （GRA） method to verify the evolution of Mainland China's industrial structure and Cross-Strait trade. Based on the results show that the evolution of Mainland China's industrial structure strongly impacts the development of Cross-Strait trade. The tertiary industry has the strongest correlation with Cross-Strait trade, followed by the secondary and primary industries.
