This paper identifies challenges and opportunities for enhancing higher education in entrepreneurship considering student perceptions concerning both their demand for entrepreneurship education and their entrepreneurial intention as well as previous studies that present the points of view of experts. The main focus is Brazilian higher education, but the results address challenges that cross borders, such as the need for a practical approach. The study analyzed the data from the Brazilian version of the 2011 Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students' Survey ( GUESSS) obtained with an online questionnaire answered by 25,751 Brazilian students from 37 colleges and universities. To give a reference for a better understanding of Brazilian statistics, data were compared to those of the 2011 international GUESSS involving also 25 other countries and 64,079 responses from them. Three hypotheses were tested. The results show that entrepreneurship education has a significant negative effect on student entrepreneurial intention and also on self-efficacy. The same occurs between entrepreneurial intention and students' demand for entrepreneurship education. Brazilian students present higher levels of entrepreneurial intention and are significantly more motivated to take courses and activities in entrepreneurship than those students in the international sample. Approximately 50 percent of Brazilian students are potential entrepreneurs. One of the opportunities identified is to take advantage of students' positive attitudes and their high demand. The opportunities could play an important role in overcoming the challenges recognized, among which are the need for a more practical approach and the need for larger and diversified educational offerings beyond business planning. The challenges make Neck and Greene's recommendations, presented in a 2011 issue of JSBM, particularly important for Brazil. Background: Academics, teachers and policy-makers across the world have discussed how to develop a relevant physical education (PE) curriculum that addresses the ‘body education’ needs and interests of twenty-first-century students. In Brazil, after the launch of the national curricular parameters (PCNs) in the late 1990s, many new PE curricula have emerged, some, such as the curriculum of the state of São Paulo (SP), claiming to be truly innovative in the promotion of the autonomous and critical individual. In 2006, SP, as the richest and most populous Brazilian State, convened several groups of specialists to design new curricula in all school areas, including PE. Curricula proposals always have a set of underpinning values and philosophies and the PE curriculum in SP seems to have enhanced its school function to beyond the sports restricted interests. Purpose: This article aims to examine the philosophical and pedagogical directions that support the new PE curriculum in SP. It asks on what concepts ofculture,bodyandmovementthe São Paulo physical education (SP/PE) curriculum is based; how the education of the autonomous individual is conceptualised and how the curriculum enhances the teaching of students'bodypractices. It also considers the ways in which autonomy is lived in an environment historically marked by social inequality. Research design: In reflecting on these questions this paper adopts the notion of one's own body as a ‘unit of meaning’). It also draws on concept of education as the development of a critique of reality as the basis for transforming it. It discussesmovement culture(MC),a central idea in the SP/PE curriculum derived from these practices of critique and transformation, as well as the concept ofSich-Bewegen, which emphasisesmovementas a proper expression of the individual. Conclusions: The traditional notion of being ‘physically educated’ as proposed by Corbin has been superseded in the new curriculum. It appears that the SP/PE curriculum is challenging educators to address new key issues in their educational practices: to foster critical thinking about both the content and themes addressed by the PE curriculum; to consider cultural diversity whilst teaching; to move away from standardised proposals; and to enhance, in students, critical views of the MC content presented in the media, and thereby to encourage students to take into account the media thematic axis as a starting and an ending point for their educational practices. This paper analyzes how Brazilian judges experience difference, focusing on how professionalism, gender, generation and diversity intersect in identity formation among women and men who are judges in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. In attempting to avoid attaching one fixed meaning to the concept of difference, we work with Avtar Brah's typology; this in turn enables us to capture how difference is perceived and experienced by our interviewees. Our results provide a look at how the specificities of the professionalization process influence the composition of the two courts we have studied (one at state and another at federal level), and how they increase or reduce the gender stratification within these careers. Being a judge is experienced through difference, in particular as the ‘Other' to those outside the career, and wherein identification is intersected by questions of gender, sexuality and generation. Although professionalism establishes boundaries between ‘us' and ‘them', it is also diluted through the ways in which the above-mentioned social markers and attributes permeate the self and professional groups. We interviewed 18 judges (women and men) from the São Paulo State Courts (Tribunal de Justiça de São Paulo) and 10 judges from the Regional Federal Courts (Tribunal Regional Federal) from the São Paulo circuit. The Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) firmly enshrined a legal framework guaranteeing enforceable minimum intellectual property (IP) standards at the international level. But it also resulted in a greater inclusion of intellectual property rights (IPRs) in wider political debates between developing and industrialised countries – for instance on questions of global health and development. This paper argues that the increasing reach and efficacy of the IP regime has given rise to wider challenges to the IP system needing urgent conceptual analysis. The focus here is on IP’s increasing confrontation with the right to health, which is analysed not as an encounter of radically opposed legal systems, but as an ambivalent process in which the right to health operates as a challenge to the IP system – and, paradoxically, as an argument for its extension. To account for this ambivalence, the analysis develops a Foucauldian understanding of the right to health’s potential challenge, re-evaluating the right to health’s role as a part of a process of incremental realisation of governmental priorities, which negotiates tensions between guaranteeing the function of the economy and improving the health of populations. While this incremental process draws attention to the limitations of the right to health’s potential to challenge the IP regime, it also highlights this regime’s difficulty in accommodating a wider range of active entrepreneurial subjects. This paper analyses the performance of freight transportation modes in Brazil – namely air, water, rail and road – from February 1996 to August 2012 by investigating their long memory properties using fractional integration and autoregressive models on monthly tonnage data. Two important features are analysed: the degree of dependence of transportation traffic across time and its seasonal structure over the period. Furthermore, the stability of parameters across the sample period is investigated, incorporating potential structural breaks in the data, which describe discontinuity in freight transportation traffic. Transference of new technological solutions requires integration between different functions and specialists involved in new product development (NPD). This paper examines management practices for integration between research and development (R&D) with others involved in NPD and proposes a framework based on organizational variables. An organizational framework (ONPD) is constructed based on an analysis of the literature and evidence of case studies in Brazilian high-tech companies. It was observed that apart from the traditional use of cross-functional teams, these companies adopted integration practices including the use of employees from marketing with experience previously gained from R&D, knowledge of the technology roadmap, and the project office structure. The population growth and the pressure over natural resources have increased around conservations areas in Brazil. Deforestation has contributed to natural disasters, such as floods and accelerated soil erosion, that have taken place in different parts of country in recent years. These events have taken lives and seriously affected not only the urban sectors but also conservation areas. One of the areas affected by natural disaster has been ‘Ilha Grande’, Big Island State Park (PEIG), the third largest oceanic island in Brazil, which is located in the state of Rio de Janeiro and coordinated by the State Environment Organization (INEA). Although Ilha Grande is one of UNESCO's Biosphere Reserves, it has been under socio-economic pressure for years. According to the Brazilian legislation, all conservation areas such as Ilha Grande should prepare a master plan for management purposes. Most of these plans are based on secondary data from the literature review, technical surveys and participatory meetings. However, a lack of primary data may lead to improper decision-making. This paper reports on the development of a local diagnosis methodology applied in Ilha Grande to improve the decision-making process for planning reasons. The strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats (SWOT) method was used to combine primary information from field diagnosis and consultation with local stakeholders. Large Brazilian cities present similar urban forms and development processes, despite the fact that some were implemented through different comprehensive plans, while still others were founded to serve a wide range of purposes. Apart from these differences, Brazilian cities have currently been experiencing considerable growth and territorial expansion. Planning processes have been put forward but have seldom been effectively implemented to form legal cities. This paper presents the characteristics of one Brazilian city, Belo Horizonte, which was designed 115 years ago to be the capital of the state of Minas Gerais and which is experiencing a similar process within its boundaries. However, the city’s spacialization and administrative body are similar to all other Brazilian cities, by comparing results from applied norms. Feather mites (Acari: Astigmata: Analgoidea and Pterolichoidea) live in the plumage and on the skin of birds. Because of the huge diversity of birds in Brazil, several groups still remain almost unexplored concerning their feather mites. ASHRAE Standard 55 is widely used to assess thermal comfort in buildings worldwide. The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate the adaptive method application proposed by ASHRAE 55 in two different climates in Brazil. This method relates the conditions for comfort to the “prevailing mean outdoor air temperature”. The currently available version of the Standard allows for linear and exponential methods to calculate the “prevailing mean”, and both are tested to establish the acceptability zones. The results indicate that choosing any of the methods to calculate the prevailing mean outdoor air temperature gives similar results when the temperature amplitudes are small; but it can lead to different limits of acceptability, and consequently sum of discomfort hours, when significant day-to-day temperature variations are present. In addition, the results indicate that it is possible to find significant percentages of thermal acceptability from previous studies below the lower limit of acceptability proposed by the Standard. Over the past 25 years, there has been growing investment in concepts of rights in the areas of HIV prevention, care and treatment, including HIV- and AIDS-related education delivered in schools. Despite this increasing commitment to the notion of rights, few efforts appear to have been made to understand the varying conceptions of rights that underpin different kinds of initiatives. Engaging with a multi-disciplinary body of literature on the issue of rights, and through a focus on three rights-informed HIV- and AIDS-related initiatives, this paper seeks to address this gap in the current literature. In so doing, it also examines a central tension within human rights discourse, namely between the construal of rights as shared and universally applicable to all human beings, while being created in and limited by the location in which they were elaborated, as well as by the language used to formulate them. More explicit engagement with the diversity of approaches made possible through a commitment to human rights may facilitate forms of HIV- and AIDS-related education that are more meaningful to young people. This paper analyses tendencies that distinguish the internationalisation of education for two class fractions – owners of medium to large businesses and highly qualified university professors and researchers. We identify the importance of cosmopolitan cultural capital, particularly fluency in English, in strengthening the position of both groups and granting them access to an international field of power from which less privileged groups are excluded. Considering the diverging experiences of the two groups compared with Bourdieu’s own findings of a high level of ruling-class cultural unity, we argue that these differences are reflective of the greater heterogeneity of the Brazilian ruling class. The main goal of this paper is to provide new insights on the Brazilian Federal Police forensic units with respect to the physical environment. The theoretical basis of this study relies on the use of statistical modeling over raw databases. Analyzing data from 7 different forensic science laboratories around the country, the method allowed having a perception on what influences the scientist's productivity. It also allowed finding an optimal physical distribution of personnel in a local forensic unit. This paper draws on the Academic Literacies approach to examine tutor/student relations in the production of academic texts. We address issues associated with learning to write in such contexts, through exploring the perspectives of two groups of non-traditional students as they reflect on their experiences in navigating educational contexts in a Brazilian public university. The term non-traditional is used here to refer to students from social groups whose previous generation had no, or very limited, access to university. In order to explore the “hidden features” of the contextualized nature of academic writing, we present two cases: students from Angola and from Campo, both groups not traditionally represented in Brazilian universities. We explored the development of writing in academic contexts by examining tensions identified by these students and their tutors/teachers as they engaged with academic literacies. Social exchange theory is used in this paper to explore how the quality of leader–member exchange (LMX) and perceived organizational support (POS) affect Brazilian nursing professionals’ perceptions of bullying and harassment and, in turn, their wellbeing. Data was obtained from 868 nursing professionals in four public hospitals in Brazil. Statistically significant linkages were found between LMX, POS, bullying/harassment and wellbeing, except for the relationship between POS and bullying/harassment. Healthcare managers and human resource managers clearly need to take initiatives to strengthen LMX and POS, minimize bullying and to strengthen nursing professionals’ wellbeing. Drawing on a case study of Brazil, this paper explores the extent to which and how International Labour Organisation's (ILO) freedom of association norms, supervision and promotion affect domestic provisions for workers' associational power. In terms of its legislative, judiciary and executive dimensions, ILO illustrate key challenges of a ‘soft law’ regime; indeed, it has allowed successive Brazilian governments to escape key freedom of association obligations. I detail what this means for workers in agriculture: crucially, Brazil's non-standard provisions for associational power exacerbate, rather than countervail, labour's structural disadvantages vis-à-vis capital. ILO norms have nevertheless been of great political significance. They sat at the heart of the discourse through which oppositional labour framed repressive labour–state relations during the late 1970s and 1980s. However, in the context of neoliberal globalisation, the meanings that Brazilian labour inscribed in these norms saw ‘rightwards’ slide, while the political connotations of the previously discredited corporatism slid in the opposite direction. Eventually, labour failed to support Lula's attempt, during the 2000s, to align Brazil's labour relations system with ILO's standards. Still, the deep historical identification of Brazil's left with ILO norms has, in combination with ILO's regularly issued denunciations and recent domestic ‘decent work’ promotion, helped a certain permutation of legal and political practice. In the last decade, Brazil has engaged with the idea of an international responsibility to protect (R2P) in a notable fashion. As a frequent member of the Security Council in the post-Cold War era, the country resisted suggestions of a responsibility to intervene in humanitarian crises, fearing it would serve to justify military action outside of the scope of the UN Charter and international law. Following the adoption of R2P in the 2005 World Summit, Brazil engaged with the concept more closely. This culminated in the 'responsibility while protecting', a proposed addendum that would ensure clearer criteria and greater accountability of UN-authorised military interventions. This paper describes Brazilian foreign policy perspectives through this period and analyses their contribution to the political and normative development of R2P. It argues that while Brazil has become more vocal and proactive in relation to the norm in recent years, its positions remained driven by some of its most traditional foreign policy arguments: the strengthening of the authority of the UN Security Council and the establishment of a multilateral order in which all states are treated equally. Doping, used to improve sports performance, is legally prohibited. This paper describes Brazilian regulations, resolutions, and Federal laws addressing the issue of doping and antidoping which were collected in 2012 from official websites. The paper investigates the effect of co-operative membership on people's capability to participate in household decision-making and on domestic gender relations. Our hypothesis is that the democratisation process activated in genuine co-operatives, authentic member-owned forms of business, may then be transferred to the household. We tested this in the “Coppalj” co-operative in Brazil, where we collected primary data. Both the techniques employed, regression and propensity score matching, support our hypotheses in a number of life domains. Though results vary slightly according to the domain and the outcome indicator, they show that members of the co-operative have a statistically significant higher capability to participate in decision-making and to share their decisions with partners than non-members (the control group). We then triangulated these quantitative outcomes with qualitative ones: the latter confirm an improvement in gender relations between co-operators and their partners, highlighting the fundamental role of Coppalj in fostering gender equality. The world today is an urban world. While rural to urban migration has contributed significantly to the increased urbanization of the globe, that process has not always been as clear and permanent as it appears. In this paper we report on the migration of smallholders to peri-urban interface ( PUI) zones in western Pará state, Brazil. We found that rural-urban migrants were constrained by their lack of marketable skills and as a consequence had few job prospects and experienced a low quality of life in the cities to which they had migrated. This led them to resettle in places at the PUI where they have the ability to supplement limited wages with more familiar subsistence activities, which reflected cultural identity and rural antecedents while enjoying a higher quality of life. The recent implementation in Brazil of a variety of conditional cash-transfer programs has added to the attractiveness of peri-urban places and contributes to a regional shift to livelihoods based on a combination of agriculture and extractivism supplemented by support from federal assistance programs. This article delves into the meaning of the 1950 World Cup, held in Brazil after a 12-year hiatus due to the Second World War and two decades after a South American country (Uruguay) had hosted the tournament. The aim of this paper is to reflect on the role of sport memoirs in the cementing of a collective imagination on the Brazilian National Team's defeat in 1950. Anchored on a triple dimension – organisational, tactical and technical – the analysis explores the way in which the loss of the title to the Uruguayan team was experienced by a number of actors – among them players, management personnel and fans – and set in writing by many generations of sports writers. Through the diachronic choice of works published by journalists (which include memoirs, news stories, biographies and autobiographies), the objective is to point to the congealing of a rhetoric made up of negative remarks associated to the football event, such as ‘trauma’, ‘drama’, ‘tragedy’ and even ‘catastrophe’. Contemporary historical perspective, which questions the deep-rooted opposition between memory and history will be turned so as to support the consideration of whether the former can in fact direct, or even shape, the latter's features. Finding solutions for complex environmental, economic and social issues in organisations relies on coordinated actions among several social actors that are involved in the sustainable development web and demands that they learn new business methods. In this scenario, which involves multiple social actors, relationships, contexts and interests, social learning has emerged as a hybrid approach to resolving complex environmental and social problems. Such an approach marks a different situation for organisations whose focus is not only on supporting such problem resolution but also on transforming such crises into opportunities to generate sustainable products and services. Thus, this study discusses how one of the largest companies in Latin America’s chemical segment formed a network with 23 social actors and is socially learning to deal with the dialectic between return on investments for its shareholders and benefits for its stakeholders. Research was conducted based on Boje’s narrative analysis. The data was built through interviews, informal conversations, textual and audio-visual documents and non-participant observation. This paper discusses the concept and describes the social learning process for sustainability (in this case, for sustainable agriculture) from the viewpoint of a for-profit organisation. The selection of sugarcane varieties is an important problem faced by companies in Brazil that exploit sugarcane harvest for energy production. In the light of current concerns regarding the reduction of environmental damage and the efficiency of the production system, research into this problem is called for. In this context the authors begin by outlining the sugarcane variety selection problem in accordance with technical constraints with the purpose of minimizing collection and transport costs and maximizing energy balance obtained from residues of the sugarcane harvest. They then present a previously developed model for the problem within bi-objective binary linear programming and study its computational complexity. Fundamentally, this paper is devoted to the application of a bi-objective genetic heuristic to the question addressed. A computational experiment, performed by resorting to a test set including real and semi-randomly generated instances, is then reported. The results prove the high quality of the heuristic in terms of solution quality, besides computing time. The economic growth of nations such as Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa starred a new order into the global power balance. For Brazil, winning the rights to host sport mega events gave the country recognition and symbolic power in the international arena. The ensuing expectation is to increase these achievements while staging the events and to sustain the profits to a remarkable level of ‘soft power’. Using the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic election as a starting point, this paper aims to reveal how sport has been used as a strategy of foreign policy to improve the country's soft power. After reviewing some key features of the Brazilian political and economic context, and the foreign policy agenda in the 2000s and the 2016 election, it is shown that sport mega events support and reflect the intention of many Brazilian political officials intention to increase the status of Brazil in the international sphere. Over the past three decades, developing countries have deregulated, privatized and liberalized their economies. Paradoxically, they have also retained or even strengthened their labour laws and regulations. This compromise has created enormous political tension, which manifests itself as recurrent calls for either a rollback or a deepening of reforms. Few of these calls have been heeded, so the burden of reconciling the conflicting policies ends up being transferred to those public agents who enforce the regulations on the ground. To understand how these agents act, the latitude they have, the limits they face and the results they accomplish, this paper examines how labour inspectors and prosecutors intervened in four beleaguered industries in Brazil. It finds that enforcement agents often do more than just impose fines or teach infringers about the law. Rather, they use their discretion and legal powers to realign incentives, reshape interests and redistribute the risks, costs and benefits of compliance across a tailor-made assemblage of public, private and non-profit enterprises in a way that makes compliance easier for all involved. On a broader canvas, regulatory enforcement agents who perform this role can be characterized as the foot soldiers of a post-neoliberal or neo-developmental state. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

As part of an increasing scientisation of political processes, epistemic communities have been identified as a unique category of social actors, who exclusively rely on their knowledge resources to shape the preferences of decision-makers. Whereas most authors expect that an expert-driven policy process facilitates the implementation of technically complex policies, critical scholars hint to an evolving technocracy, whose scientific dogmatism may end up in policies that aggravate social problems. In this paper, these countervailing assumptions are empirically assessed for the epistemic community on biodiversity and its role in Brazil and India. At least in this case, it seems that the impact experts' influence depends on the configuration of the policy arena. If experts are institutionally compelled to debate their positions with potential critics, the members of an epistemic community seem to engage in a rather deliberative discourse that widens the policy space for all stakeholders involved. Under the conditions of an elitist closure, however, policy experts seem to adapt to the preferences of the most powerful actors but refrain from any critical self-reflection that might seriously challenge their own convictions. The transition from a carbon-driven economy to a green-driven economy demands a paradigm shift in institutions and change in infrastructure. This paper examines the Brazilian quest for a green and equitable economy. Brazil’s green liabilities range from a carbon-intensive transportation matrix to a poorly developed social infrastructure. Yet, Brazil offers one of the world’s most biodiverse landscapes, a large reservoir of fresh water and the world’s largest tropical forest. Using a ‘politics of attention’ perspective, we propose that it is precisely the mobility of the Brazilian economy that precludes its evolution as a vanguard of change. Its rising status as a part of the global economic agenda makes it accept globalization without making an effective paradigm shift toward the environment and social justice. Callibaetis Eaton remains poorly known in South America. Some of the species in the genus are difficult to identify with confidence and most are known only at the adult stage. In this paper we increase the number of species known to occur in Brazil from 11 to 18; diagnoses of species are improved; five new species are described based on nymphs and reared adults of both genders (C. calloventer sp. nov.,C. cruentus sp. nov.,C. gelidus sp. nov.,C. itannae sp. nov., C. nigracyclus sp. nov.); first records of two species are reported from Brazil (C. gonzalezi and C. sellacki); descriptions of unknown stages are made (C. gonzalezi male imago and C. jocosus nymph); redescriptions of known stage are provided for male and female imago of C. jocosus. This paper presents findings from a qualitative study of the impact on women’s sexual lives after diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer in Ribeirao Preto, São Paulo. The study involved 36 women, 15 of whom were interviewed and the remainder of whom participated in focus and body-image group discussions. Data collection was undertaken between 2008 and 2010. Findings focus on women’s experience of breast cancer as a life-threatening condition and document reappraisals of their lives in general, seeking to situate these women’s sexual lives within the context of wider ideals about femininity and sexual cultures in Brazil. Women expressed anxiety concerning the effects of treatment for breast cancer, particularly concerns about body image. We draw together implications of the prior findings for the sexual scripts played out in women’s sexual relationships and lives. Three main sexual scripts – ‘traditional gender roles’, ‘ageing’ and ‘egalitarian pleasure-oriented’ – are identified and discussed in relation to both the life-changing impact of diagnosis of cancer and wider changes in gender dimensions of Brazilian sexual culture. This paper investigates the implementation and enforcement of environmental licensing and environmental impact assessment (EIA) regulations and decisions in the context of the Rio 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil. The methodology includes detailed case study analysis involving document analysis and interviews with key stakeholders. The results demonstrate that implementation and enforcement of EIA and environmental licensing still have a long way to go in terms of being fully effective in Brazil. Despite this, in the scope of the case study, the results showed that implementation and enforcement of environmental licensing and EIA regulations and decisions seem to be undertaken according to relevant regulations in the context of the Pan American Village. As emerging economies experience a boom in capital inflows, governments are increasingly concerned about their downsides. Even the IMF (International Monetary Fund), long a stalwart proponent of financial liberalization, has engaged in a new debate on capital flow management. Drawing lessons from empirical case studies on Brazil and South Korea, this paper finds that the new IMF framework remains insufficient in two main aspects. First, by defining ‘capital flow management measures’ (CFMs) as a temporary instrument embedded in an overall strategy of financial opening, the organization insists on the general advantages of financial liberalization, which poses serious limits to emerging economies’ policy space. Second, the Fund keeps on stressing a separation of prudential financial regulation, which should be permanent, and temporary CFMs. Yet, the case studies presented here show that, especially for emerging markets with rather open and sophisticated domestic financial markets, both types of measures are interdependent and overlapping. Additionally, we demonstrate the relevance of a third type of regulation, lying on foreign exchange (FX) derivatives instruments, which may also be required to effectively manage foreign investors’ portfolio reallocations and their impact. The circulation of knowledge and educational innovations at the beginning of the twentieth century followed the growth of public educational systems. It led to complex exchanges and configurations due to the crossing of different national traditions, ideas and practices. The organisation of homogeneous classrooms according to the mental development of students and of special classes for children with learning difficulties and personality troubles are examples of this process. In the elementary schools of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, special classes for the "mentally retarded" were part of a reform of the public educational system promoted by the local government in 1927. The reform was implemented during the 1930s under the supervision of the Belo Horizonte Teachers Training College, where foreign specialists were hired to head the Laboratory of Psychology and to help in the organisation of homogeneous classrooms. The Laboratory of Psychology was established in 1928 by the French psychiatrist Théodore Simon (1873–1961), who had been invited for the task, and its directorship was assumed subsequently by two Russian psychologists who had worked as assistants to Claparède at the Rousseau Institute in Geneva (Léon Walther [1889–1963], in the first semester of 1929, and Helena Antipoff [1892–1974] from 1929 till 1944). The purpose of this paper is to study the project of special classes that were established at the time, using as sources articles published by Antipoff and her students in the periodical Infância Excepcional (Exceptional Children), edited in Belo Horizonte during the 1930s and 1940s, the correspondence Antipoff maintained with her master Édouard Claparède (1873–1940), the Swiss psychiatrist and psychologist, and a founder of the Rousseau Institute of the Sciences of Education in Geneva, and other documents concerning the works of the Belo Horizonte Teachers Training College. This article looks at how these special classes, based on the guidelines proposed by Helena Antipoff, were established, adapted and transformed within the Brazilian context. Born in Russia, Helena Antipoff studied in France (1910–1911), where she was an intern at the Binet-Simon laboratory of psychology, and Geneva (1912–1914), where she completed her studies in the sciences of education at the Jean-Jacques Rousseau Institute, where she subsequently worked as teaching assistant and researcher (1926–1929). The authors' hypothesis is that the special classes established in Belo Horizonte were designed on the basis of the European, especially the Genevan model; that they represented an example of the international flow and dissemination of knowledge, and of the building of a benchmark in the field of special education in Brazil; that they subsequently contributed to the social construction of professions related to the field of special education and of the circulation and modelling of what came to be labelled as "learning and personality troubles" in children. Special classes for the education of "retarded" children and of children with learning difficulties were established in Geneva in the beginning of the twentieth century, where Claparède had supervised the examination and selection of students and the training of schoolteachers for special education since 1901. With the foundation of the Rousseau Institute in 1912, the training of teachers and the development of methods for the examination and education of special children were assumed by the Institute's team, including Claparède, the medical doctor François Naville and Alice Descoeudres, who was responsible for the development of several methods for special education. In Belo Horizonte, the establishment of special classes for the education of "retarded" children was part of a school reform launched in 1927, inspired by New Education ideals. Under Antipoff's leadership, the Laboratory of Psychology promoted the organisation of homogeneous classrooms and of special education classes in local elementary schools, starting in 1930. Intelligence tests were adapted for the measurement of the mental development of students. In the interpretation of the results, Antipoff emphasised the role of the social environment in shaping students' cognitive abilities, and developed the concept of "civilised intelligence" to explain differences in students' performances with regard to the social level of their families. "Civilised intelligence" referred to intellectual abilities already polished by society and culture, present in mental test results. She discussed with Claparède the possibility of including a "social factor" in the interpretation of test results. In the organisation and supervision of educational activities in the special classes of Belo Horizonte, the laboratory of Psychology team adapted mental orthopaedic exercises developed in Paris by Alfred Binet and in Geneva by Alice Descoeudres. Books written by Claparède and Descoeudres were translated into Portuguese, and educational practices recommended for special classes based on their suggestions were spread among teachers who came from other Brazilian states and even from other Latin American countries to attend the Belo Horizonte Teachers College. In 1932, under Antipoff's leadership, a group of teachers, doctors and intellectuals established the Belo Horizonte Pestalozzi Society for the purpose of better developing the examination and the education of mentally "retarded" and troubled children, and of giving support for the work done in special classes in Belo Horizonte schools. The approach to special education developed at the Laboratory of Psychology and at the Pestalozzi Society became known in Brazil for its "Active school" perspective, inspired by the Genevan experience. Reports written by Antipoff's students such as Naytres Rezende show that most students who attended special classes presented normal levels of intelligence, but were psychologically disturbed. The majority of those students came from low-income families. Mental orthopaedic exercises were then adapted for the development of the "civilised intelligence" required by schools. Concerning the development of special education in Belo Horizonte, one can see that the division of classes by intellectual level, the use of intelligence tests for diagnosis, the reference to the idea of a "student tailored school" proposed by Claparède, and the dialogue with methods suggested by Alice Descoeudres provide evidence of its close relationship with the Genevan model. The ideal of a scientific pedagogy, as proposed by Claparède, was remarkable in the Belo Horizonte experience, under the leadership of the Teachers College Laboratory of Psychology. At the same time, the interpretation of mental test results as manifestations of a type of "civilised intelligence" and the adaptations of mental orthopaedic exercises in order to develop this kind of intelligence required by schools show the transformations of the model within the Brazilian context. Although the model proposed for Belo Horizonte special classes can be interpreted as deriving from the Genevan approach, more research is needed to better describe how these ideas were put into practice within the highly complex institutional context of existing schools. It is important to observe what the consequences were of the organisation of special classes for children with learning or personality troubles for the future development of the local school system and for the targeted population, i.e. children with difficulties of adaptation to a highly centralised and hierarchical school system. Land cover, an important factor for monitoring changes in land use and erosion risk, has been widely monitored and evaluated by vegetation indices. However, a study that associates normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series to climate parameters to determine soil cover has yet to be conducted in the Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil, where anthropogenic activities have been carried out for centuries. The objective of this paper is to evaluate soil cover in a Brazilian Atlantic rainforest watershed using NDVI time series from Thematic Mapper (TM) Landsat 5 imagery from 1986 to 2009, and to introduce a new method for calculating the cover management factor (C-factor) of the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model. Twenty-two TM Landsat 5 images were corrected for atmospheric effects using the 6S model, georeferenced using control points collected in the field and imported to a GIS database. Contour lines and elevation points were extracted from a 1:50,000-scale topographic map and used to construct a digital elevation model that defined watershed boundaries. NDVI and RUSLE C-factor values derived from this model were calculated within watershed limits with 1 km buffers. Rainfall data from a local weather station were used to verify NDVI and C-factor patterns in response to seasonal rainfall variations. Our proposed method produced realistic values for RUSLE C-factor using rescaled NDVIs, which highly correlated with other methods, and were applicable to tropical areas exhibiting high rainfall intensity. C-factor values were used to classify soil cover into different classes, which varied throughout the time-series period, and indicated that values attributed to each land cover cannot be fixed. Depending on seasonal rainfall distribution, low precipitation rates in the rainy season significantly affect the C-factor in the following year. In conclusion, NDVI time series obtained from satellite images, such as from Landsat 5, are useful for estimating the cover management factor and monitoring watershed erosion. These estimates may replace table values developed for specific land covers, thereby avoiding the cumbersome field measurements of these factors. Given that mental symptoms might interfere with the quality of life (QOL) of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs), the goal of this paper was to examine the correlation between depression, anxiety, and QOL in a sample of HIV-positive Brazilians. A cross-sectional study was designed to analyze the correlations between the presence of mental symptoms and the QOL scores of PLHAs. Depression and anxiety symptoms were measured using the Beck Depression Inventory and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, respectively. The QOL was assessed using theWorld Health Organization Quality of Life instrument – HIV module. A convenience sample of 308 men and women living with HIV (131 asymptomatic, 91 symptomatic, and 86 with AIDS) in Porto Alegre/RS-Brazil was selected. The depression scores were higher in patients with AIDS compared with asymptomatic and symptomatic patients, yet there were no differences in the anxiety scores between the stages of infection. Better QOL scores were observed in the earlier stages of infection (asymptomatic and symptomatic groups). In the correlation between mental symptoms and QOL scores, the Pearson’s coefficient values were of a moderate (r = .47) to a large (r = .65) magnitude for depressive symptoms, and the scores for the anxiety symptoms were small to moderate (r ⩽ .35). After adjusting for the disease stage and clinical and sociodemographic variables in a multiple regression model (using QOL as the dependent variable), the depressive symptoms showed significantly higher beta-coefficient values compared with the remaining variables. The data obtained from this study indicate that the QOL of PLHAs is primarily affected by depression. Thus, it has been strongly recommended that treatment programs dedicated to PLHAs assess depressive symptoms, providing subsequent referrals and treatments. The filamentous fungus Acrophialophora nainiana, isolated from a hot spring in Brazil, was grown in liquid culture on different cellulosic and lignocellulosic carbon sources for seven days and enzyme extracts were characterised with respect to their carbohydrase activity profile. The enzyme extracts obtained from growing A. nainiana on cellulose, dirty-cotton residue, sugarcane bagasse and banana stem were used in the hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse untreated (UT), pre-treated by steam explosion (SET) and pre-treated by acid-catalysed steam explosion (SAT). The carbohydrase activity profile of the enzyme preparations varied significantly with the used carbon source. The highest enzyme activities, especially total cellulase (0.0132 IU) and xylanase (0.0774 IU) activities, were obtained with banana stem as the carbon source. Pectinase activity was produced on all carbon sources at comparable levels. On sugarcane bagasse, total cellulase activity on filter paper and pectinase activities were predominant, but a very low amount of xylanase and CMCase activity, 0.0011 IU and 0.0019 IU, respectively, was found. The exocellulase/endocellulase activity ratio (FPAsol/FPAinsol) of the cellulases produced varied between 1 and 4 depending on the substrate. The highest endocellulase activity (FPAinsol) content was obtained when grown on sugarcane bagasse. Conversions to reducing sugars of the differently pre-treated sugarcane bagasse substrates with enzyme preparations from A. nainiana were in general low. The highest conversion to reducing sugars (˜18%) was obtained for the SET bagasse by the banana stem enzyme preparation, while conversions with the other enzyme preparations were below 5%. In most cases a very low conversion (below 1%) was obtained for the SAT bagasse, but better conversions were achieved for the UT. These results are mainly attributable to the hydrolysis of the hemicellulose fraction and the low cellulase and β-glucosidase activities in the enzyme preparations. Hydrolysis data were also analysed and successfully fitted with a fractal kinetics model, and model parameters are discussed with respect to the carbon source used for A. nainiana enzyme production and substrate pre-treatment. In Brazil, sugarcane biomass is generated in large amounts. Sugarcane bagasse and straw are considered as an important feedstock for renewable energy and biorefinery. This paper aims to study the generation of monosaccharides (C5 and C6) from sugarcane biomass via processing bagasse or straw and mixtures of both materials (bagasse:straw 3:1, 1:1 and 1:3). Samples were pretreated with sulfuric acid which resulted in approximately 90% of hemicellulose solubilization, corresponding to around 58 g L− 1 of xylose. Pretreated straw showed greater susceptibility to enzymatic hydrolysis in comparison to bagasse, as shown by glucose yields of 76% and 65%, respectively, whereas the mixtures showed intermediate yields. Thus, one strategy to balance sugarcane biomass availability and possibly increasing 2G ethanol production would be to use bagasse-straw mixtures in appropriate ratios according to market fluctuations. Triple Helix theory prescribes coordinated actions among government, research institutions and industry to achieve growth. However, the Brazilian wine industry case shows that simply having the institutions is not enough – the institutional framework matters. This paper shows three problems in the Brazilian institutional design that hamper wine quality improvements and impede the development of an effective, fully-fledged Triple Helix model in the Brazilian wine industry. They are: overlapping jurisdictions between the federal and state governments; dissociation between the policy-making locus and the industry; and over-institutionalization. The latter cause is not well developed in the Triple Helix literature as yet. These three factors create coordination problems that appear to be almost insoluble in the present state, and underscore the need for designing institutions carefully before this impasse is reached. This paper investigates how interest rates affect the probability of default (PD) in a general equilibrium incomplete markets economy. We show that the PD depends positively on the loan interest rate and negatively on the economy base interest rate. Empirically, this finding is confirmed by estimation of the Cox proportional hazard model with time-varying covariates using a sample of 445 889 individual contracts from a large Brazilian bank. Among the controls are macroeconomic variables and specific characteristics of the contracts and borrowers. A lower base interest rate, implied by easing monetary policy, leads banks to lend more money for riskier borrowers, increasing the PD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unsafe abortions remain a major public health problem in countries with very restrictive abortion laws. In Brazil, parliamentarians — who have the power to change the law — are influenced by "public opinion", often obtained through surveys and opinion polls. This paper presents the findings from two studies. One was carried out in February–December 2010 among 1,660 public servants and the other in February–July 2011 with 874 medical students from three medical schools, both in São Paulo State, Brazil. Both groups of respondents were asked two sets of questions to obtain their opinion about abortion: 1) under which circumstances abortion should be permitted by law, and 2) whether or not women in general and women they knew who had had an abortion should be punished with prison, as Brazilian law mandates. The differences in their answers were enormous: the majority of respondents were against putting women who have had abortions in prison. Almost 60% of civil servants and 25% of medical students knew at least one woman who had had an illegal abortion; 85% of medical students and 83% of civil servants thought this person(s) should not be jailed. Brazilian parliamentarians who are currently reviewing a reform in the Penal Code need to have this information urgently. This paper describes a research on semi-autonomous workgroups and teamwork in an intersectoral sample of 49 firms operating in Brazil, which stated that they use self-managed teams in their operations. A questionnaire was applied containing questions aimed at characterizing the firms, the scope of their teams' autonomy and the results achieved through their use. The findings were subjected to a statistical analysis of nonparametric variables to identify possible correlations among given characteristics of the firms, the scope of the teams' autonomy and the respective results. A positive correlation was found between the degree of autonomy of the teams and results associated with their higher learning ability, their greater flexibility in responding to changes in the production setup and the higher efficiency of information flows. The method (questionnaire and statistical treatment) can be replicated by other researchers on other samples of firms. This is a survey whose results allow for the addition of quantitative data to understand and analyze the use of self-management in Brazilian companies. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

As a self-employed sports consultant, I was overwhelmed when three of the athletes I work with were selected for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Working in a minority sport, I knew there would not be scope for me to attend to every step of the way; but like all good sports consultants, I was committed to doing the best I could to ensure these athletes performed at their peak when required. This paper follows my journey as performance coach with one Olympic athlete and the National coach, reviewing practice along the way through interviews, conferences, research, journal entries and the social media. It has led me to what some will see as a surprising conclusion; namely, that most sports science is not used in a functional way. Public administration education is provided in Brazil in two modalities: by government schools at all levels and branches of government, and by academic programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Education before entering the public service is primarily offered in public and private institutions of higher education at the graduate and undergraduate levels, with the latter predominating. Schools of government provide professional training that concentrates on skill and knowledge development for civil servants; a few offer academic degrees. Training is generally related to the focus of sponsoring agencies, although some schools have more expansive offerings. This paper addresses three questions related to the delivery of public administration education in Brazil: (a) How have the academic and professional training systems evolved? AmeroseiusBerlese is the most numerous genus of family Ameroseiidae Evans (in Hughes 1961). Species of this genus have been reported from many regions around the world. A few species of this genus are known from Brazil.Ameroseius mineiroNarita, Bernardi and Moraes, sp. nov. is described based on the morphology of adult females and males collected from guano in caves of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. This is the secondAmeroseiusspecies described from Brazil. The holotypes ofAmeroseius plumosus(Oudemans) andAmeroseius plumigera(Oudemans) were examined, given their close similarity with the species described in this paper, and they are here redescribed.
