The purpose of this study is to contribute to the establishment of metrics that can be used by libraries to analyze, anticipate, and plan for resource allocation for specialized print-based collections within an academic library. In the context of transactions associated with the circulation of library materials, that is checkouts, renewals, and holds, the resources this study will propose includes two ratios that can be used for evaluating and justifying continued allocation of library resources to specialized print collections. These ratios proposed are the Proportionate Number (P/N) and Internal P/N (I-P/N) Ratios. Beginning with the conceptual framework of how data driven decision making can contribute to the operation of the library, the study will also provide concrete examples of how to analyze data from an Integrated Library System (ILS). Data will be presented for the case study of Gumberg Library at Duquesne University. The Michigan State University Libraries (MSUL) digital repository contains numerous collections of openly available material. Since 2016, the digital repository has been using Faceted Application of Subject Terminology (FAST) subject headings as its primary subject vocabulary in order to streamline faceting, display, and search. The MSUL FAST use case presents some challenges that are not addressed by existing MARC-focused FAST tools. This paper will outline the MSUL digital repository team's justification for including FAST headings in the digital repository as well as workflows for adding FAST headings to Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) metadata, their maintenance, and utilization for discovery. Mounting digital images of art objects on a Web site is only the first step in providing patron access to such materials. Libraries and museums have a responsibility to provide not only high-quality digital reproductions but also high-quality access from an integrated library catalog with controlled vocabulary and consistent access points. While some digital collections may have excellent internal searchability and require no more than collection level cataloging in a library's OPAC, others may demand cataloging of individual components of the collection. A particular collection's significance, its potential audience, the types of access required, as well as factors such as its size and cohesiveness need to be considered before becoming locked into a specific Web design-especially when it is that of another institution. This paper examines several online library catalogs in which records for art objects as well as historical objects and natural history specimens have been merged, with varying degrees of success, and briefly addresses a modest proposal to catalog ceramic objects at the Ohio State University Libraries. The importance of consistent subject access in a merged catalog, regardless of the thesaurus or thesauri used, is stressed. Library consortia and bibliographic utilities may offer an economically appealing alternative for libraries that cannot design and construct their own digital libraries but these external organizations often have limited capability for—or interest in—modifying the design for a particular library and even less interest in cataloging the collections. Libraries, too, must be faulted for simply listing available electronic resources, either alphabetically or in broad subject categories, on a separate portion of their Web page and failing to provide full catalog records in their catalog. Finally, it is emphasized that the current debate over the viability of MARC 21 versus other metadata standards remains largely irrelevant to the importance of continuing to cultivate a monolithic online catalog, maintaining cataloging standards, and not mindlessly developing what amounts to a separate, rudimentary catalog solely for electronic resources. The ownership of MARC bibliographic data has been an issue between OCLC and other companies in the marketplace. Two lawsuits are discussed between OCLC and Clarivate and SkyRiver. The "WorldCat Rights and Responsibilities for the OCLC Cooperative" provides a basis for many library contracts and how OCLC lays claim to bibliographic data. The "ICOLC Statement on the Metadata Rights of Libraries" is used as a general framework for discussing issues surrounding who owns MARC records and how they can be used or re-used. After several centuries of intensive collection development activity, the major research library collections of North America and Western Europe, taken as a whole, can be expected to provide reasonable coverage for all of the world's languages and peoples. One might also expect that any two languages with a similar number of speakers and a similar publishing output might have similar profiles in terms of the amount and quality of materials available to scholars in Western library collections. For the Turkic peoples of the North Caucasus (Kumyks, Karachais, Balkars, Nogais, and a few others), however, this is not the case. This article (which is Part II of a three-part series) demonstrates that, despite the scholarly value, intrinsic interest, and potential geopolitical significance of publications in North Caucasus Turkic languages, these publications are severely under-represented in Western libraries and, relatedly, in Western scholarship about religion, politics, history, culture, war and revolution on the northern perimeter of the Muslim world. Despite the general consensus that field experience during library school is important for applying theory to practical situations, there is a lack of understanding about what students want from, and the barriers they face to acquire, graduate employment. A survey was sent to ALA accredited Master of Library Science programs in the United States, asking students about their library employment status and to rank factors that influenced their decision to accept their positions. Patterns emerged when results were grouped by various life factors. The results of this study show what students are looking for from employment, which could help employers recruit. Creative artists frequently turn to academic or public libraries for research. Rarely do they seem to turn to historical society libraries and archives. This article describes three benefits of using historical society libraries and archives to creative artists: the collections themselves, the different ways artists use the collections, and the staff expertise available at these institutions. Given the increasing demand for GIS services and collections in libraries, librarians should use every outreach tool available to reach potential audiences. An annual event, GIS Day has a robust and established range of supporting tools that are easily customized for local use. Effective marketing, including visibility and longevity of Web pages, is an effective tool for increasing awareness of GIS services. This study analyzes content of Web pages to evaluate the levels of participation and promotion of GIS through GIS Day at U.S.-based Association of Research Libraries academic libraries and their host universities. South Pointe Hospital is a community hospital that originally had few electronic resources available. This article describes how the library gradually acquired an electronic journals collection that started with just 2 titles and grew to a list of over 6000 titles including open access publications. The journals' online usage statistics were used to justify and increase the library budget, which enabled the library to purchase more titles as journal infrastructure software. Many libraries in the US provide information about their cataloging department homepages as segments of their technical services homepages. However, in case of the Arabian Gulf university libraries, all the library Websites focus on general collections and services available to their patrons and there is a lack of information on various departments within the library. Very few library Websites have information about the cataloging departments. Only the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) library Website provides a separate Website for its Cataloging Operations Division. Many libraries have large collections of electronically available databases including journal article and conference paper indexes, full-text vendor catalogs, and standards databases. Which of these resources are being used and to what level becomes a point of interest. A quick re-direct Web-log has been created to track the number of times a particular link is selected, providing a consistent comparison of different resources. The resulting information can be used to determine if what the library provided is being used and if it can be marketed more effectively, which, ultimately, will aid in a cost/benefit analysis for budget decisions. The Internet has had a profound impact on the way people access and use information, especially in the area of monitoring and protecting human rights. This article reviews the development of the University of Minnesota Human Rights Library, one of the largest collections of human rights documents available on the web. Access denied turnaway statistics are provided to libraries to help with serials collection development, but very little research about turnaways is available. This article examines the relationship between access denied turnaways and interlibrary loan (ILL) requests at one institution in an attempt to deepen our understanding of turnaways. The study showed that there is a moderate correlation with an overall ILL requests to turnaways ratio of 11.4%. The strength of the relationship and the ILL requests to turnaways ratio do vary depending on the publisher/provider. Presents archives related to the field of public administration, labor and politics. The Ohio Historical Society has a number of collections of interest to labor historians. The recently published Guide to Primary Sources in Ohio Labor History provides information on many of these collections. Over fifty Ohio labor newspaper titles are available through inter-library loan and more than sixty transcribed oral history interviews can be consulted in the library. Sangamon State University Archives holds the Harry Weinhoeft Papers-a collection of personal papers and union records relating primarily to Springfield, Illinois Local 46 of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers. The Rhode Island Labor Archives, housed at the Rhode Island Historical Society, has recently acquired the records of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 328A. The Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs at Wayne State University has recently accessioned three collections of interest to labor historians.

Libraries have long been concerned about aging library professionals. Libraries that have not experienced high rates of retirement and turnover may not be prepared to bring on new personnel using a supportive approach. Onboarding librarians and library staff can increase employee retention. This includes strategies for librarians who are coping with managing high turnover, including learning about the organization's recruitment procedures, creating an onboarding plan that includes training and documentation, and taking care of oneself. Collections assessment in academic libraries has experienced a shift in recent years from project-based models to continuous models that aim improve the responsivity of library collections to campus needs. This article focuses on the King Library, Miami University, Oxford. The website of the library is www.lib.muohio.edu. The general collections in King are available for use to anyone who is in the building, and anyone may walk in. Current hours are posted on the library web page under Hours. Some of the Russian collection is in an off-site storage facility, the Southwest Regional Depository, and these items must be recalled, which takes two business days. It might be best to request these through Interlibrary Loan. Books circulate only to people connected with Miami University or to people living in the area who have joined the Friends of the Library organization. All others can borrow books though Inter-library Loan at their home institutions. The books in Special Collections are in a discrete area on the third floor of King Library, which has different hours and rules for access. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or by appointment. Each person using materials is required to have a photo ID.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries' Special Collections and Archives has a collection of over three thousand oral history interviews. Previous cataloging procedures provided limited discoverability to these interviews that prioritized access to physical transcripts. New workflows established for the management and description of archival collections provided the opportunity to revisit cataloging practices for oral history interviews. This article discusses local considerations, challenges, and workflows involved in access and discoverability of individual oral history interviews in a variety of physical formats, using exported metadata from ArchivesSpace to create the basis of an original MARC record in OCLC's WorldCat. COVID-19 pandemic has a significant impact on individual and social activities, at the beginning of 2020, this pandemic led to the closure of social activities. After that, with the limited resumption of these activities, the activities of many social institutions took on different forms. Among these social institutions, we can mention the libraries that were closed in the first few months of Pandemic and continued their cultural activities through cyberspace, and now serve a small percentage of their users to maintain the health of members. In this regard, the National Library and Archives of Iran (NLAI), according to its duties and missions, has taken effective steps in developing strategies to increase the level of services and optimize services by using new technologies. One of the duties of the National Library is to distribute and make available information to all users. The NLAI, with the slogan "National Memory in the Home of Every Iranian," has placed a part of its digital resources on the library's website for public access to these resources. South Asian collections in the West have complex histories. Usually started at the time of colonial rule and built on practices of acquisition, they often involved the removal of manuscripts and books from the subcontinent with little or no compensation to the owners. This in turn created gaps in knowledge locally. While following the founding of the independent, post-colonial nation-states, acquisition practices changed, a culture of coloniality continued through book exchanges and the classification system rooted in Western frameworks of knowledge and colonial mindsets. Moreover, for scholars outside the physical libraries, there are barriers to access the collections. Looking at current library practices, and with University of Wisconsin-Madison's collections as a case study, this article outlines some historical problematics and points towards new directions in working toward decolonising the library. Little is known about self-publishing authors and about the concerns of public librarians regarding how best to support library self-publishing initiatives. This article presents and analyzes a survey of authors participating in programming at the Woodneath Library Center/Woodneath Press. It also presents and analyzes the results of a survey of public librarians. Findings suggest that self-publishing authors in this case study would benefit from author services support, and that librarians require targeted training to provide such support. Public libraries have proven for centuries to be infrastructures both stable enough as reference centers for access to knowledge yet plastic enough to respond to the social changes of the communities they serve. In these present times of transformation, during which digitalization and the intensive use of technologies are modifying the way in which knowledge is produced, public libraries are facing new and disruptive challenges. The emergence of certain innovation ecosystems within libraries, which place the community at the center of cocreation and codesign processes between different agents, has transformed some public libraries into encountering spaces. The Library Living Lab, in the Miquel Batllori Public Library of Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona, Spain), is an expression of this systemic change. The following paper is a case study based on that sociotechnical infrastructure and analyzes, through two singular examples, how digital technologies can be drivers of social transformation when citizen engagement is placed at the center of innovation processes. The case study also provides insights into how public libraries may become key agents in fostering and strengthening social cohesion through situated, collective, and technology-based innovation practices. As libraries commit to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives, it is critical to measure the strengths and weaknesses of collections in response. Building off already established approaches of collection diversity audits, the author argues that it is possible to use MARC metadata to perform exploratory analyses at a large scale. This paper discusses the process of planning, preparing the data, and performing an analysis, following the trajectory of an analysis of the 2.8 million geographic subject headings present in the University of Toronto Libraries' MARC records. This article identifies a common problem in many academic libraries: users having difficulties finding library items. It suggests that a mapping system may help solve the problem if the difficulties stem from users who do not understand floor structures of the library or classification of the collections. The technology of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is proposed to build the system because of its ability to analyze spatial data of collection locations and dynamically present the analytical results in maps of varied detail. Such a GIS item-locating system could he integrated into current online catalog systems so that users would have search results in both textual display and visual demonstration. The article presents information on the Humanities and Social Sciences Library of University of Alberta. The library is situated at I-01 Rutherford Library, Edmonton, Alberta. Primary users of the library have free access to the collection. While consortial partners and external users have access via interlibrary loan. Free on-site access is available to any user. The library's collection focuses on the areas of humanities and social sciences. There are a number of unique archival collections preserved at the University of Alberta, housed at the University of Alberta Archives and at the Canadian institute of Ukrainian Studies. The strengths of the collection in humanities include literature (primary and secondary works), philology, language teaching and learning, applied linguistics, cultural studies, popular media, and folklore.

This article focuses on the Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York. Syracuse University provides library services to meet the instructional and research needs of its students, faculty, and staff; to fulfill regional and national commitments to resource sharing; and, as resources permit, to meet the research needs of alumni and the Syracuse community. Visitors are welcome to use the Library's collections for research and study purposes. These materials include collections housed in Library stacks; government documents; reference collections; current periodicals and newspapers, except those held on reserve; and microform collections. Unless they are registered as guest borrowers, visitors may use Library resources only in-house. Depository collections of the U.S. government publications, and help in using them, are freely available to all visitors. With the exception of these depository collections, the Library may at times give priority in service to University-affiliated users, and may limit visitors' access to selected facilities, collections, and services.

Howard D. White's Brief Tests of Collection Strength presents a method for evaluating library collections. His method, based on comparing short lists of items (brief tests) to a library's holdings, comes out of conspectus work of the 1980s but is much more straightforward. White provides evidence and research supporting the integrity of his approach. Women musicians were virtually ignored in the literature of Western music until their recent inclusion in standard reference sources and other publications. However, making these works available to the researcher becomes a challenge for library collection development departments, especially for small libraries unaffiliated with music schools that have only a modest music collection and budget. This paper offers guidance in developing a small collection of books on women in music that will complement the current collection and provide amore accuratehistory of Western music. In this article, I analyse documents from the Pedagogical Museum of Paris, particularly the writings of Ferdinand Buisson (1878–1879), in which the author addresses not only the French experience but others too. This analysis allowed me to outline a network of transnational sociability composed by intellectuals, pedagogues, and people from public instruction who were concerned with the creation and consolidation of national pedagogical museums. The clues on the French Museum project allowed us to observe circulations, inspirations, appropriations, and exchanges in relation to models implemented in several countries. It also allowed for the insertion of national pedagogical museums, emerging in the second half of the nineteenth century as part of an international movement; subjects from different nations promoted the circulation, appropriation, and exchange of ideas and practices to achieve a scientific education, advocated transnational comparative studies, and created pedagogical museums as strategic tools for achieving this goal. Though many library practices and services were put on hold at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, hiring still took place in some academic libraries. This column details the process of remote onboarding in an academic library that was accustomed to in-person hiring and training, and it provides perspective from both the supervisor and the newly-hired electronic resources librarian in the UNC Greensboro University Libraries Technical Services Department. Authors seek to illustrate the process of developing a structured virtual onboarding program, as well as uncover the social challenges posed by physical distancing in a new working environment, and strive to answer the question, how does one become a part of a department when the department itself cannot meet in person? This paper presents the analysis of over 4,000 chat questions from 2019-2020. Each chat question was individually categorized into broad level topics, and analyzed using sentiment analysis. During the COVID pandemic, there was an increase in the number of questions about accessing the physical collection, and a large decrease in questions about using the library space. The overall sentiments of the chat questions were much more negative during COVID. Tagging and analyzing chat questions in this way can offer unique insights for all types of libraries to appropriately staff the service and best support patron needs in times of crisis. Unfiltered, unverified information flows freely on the web and is much more easily found and used than reliable sources. There are logical reasons for this, as quality, reliable information often costs both time and money to investigate, verify, and publish. However, that type of investment only justifies the charging for the information at the outset, not the cabining of it once it is available and has been purchased. Where public libraries have acquired content, they should be allowed to maximize its use in society within the bounds of copyright. Such use is within the spirit of copyright and its hope for an informed citizenry and more equal access to information. Private legislation coupled with library collaboration on multiplying access points could make quality information available to the public in a quantity and manner that could help fight the war on misinformation. In 2015, the United Nations (UN) called for a better world through 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Public libraries offer a wide range of services that can contribute to creating effective change in societies. Shoman library is one large public library in Jordan that is part of the Abdul Hamid Shoman Foundation. This article investigates how Abdul Hamid Shoman library's services, projects, and activities are related to achieving the UN SDGs. The benefit of this research paper lies in its novelty in Jordan. The article has practical implications for Shoman library (and other libraries), as it provides an insight on strategic planning framework to cover all relevant SDGs. The results showed that Shoman library has already contributed to achieving a large number of the SDGs causing a wide positive impact on the community. The University of Central Florida Health Sciences Library is a digital library with 98% of resources being electronic and available online. Though almost all aspects of the library's operations were impacted by the closing of the physical space during the coronavirus pandemic, being a digital library helped the library team transition quickly to remote reference, programming and instruction services. This research project explores whether a correlation exists between the use of one university library's subject-specific LibGuides and print and electronic book usage in associated subject areas. Statistical analysis was applied to LibGuides usage statistics, integrated library system (ILS) circulation data, and ebook usage data provided by library vendors. Significant positive correlations were found between LibGuides usage and book and electronic book usage at several levels: generally, by subject, and by University school. By exploring the correlations, the researchers show how statistical analysis can be used to demonstrate the value of subject-specific LibGuides using objective metrics. This study is a diversity audit of play script orders during FY2011 and FY2019 to determine if University of California, Irvine Libraries' orders had shifted to reflect the increased demand for diverse playwrights. The audit also examined the larger publishing landscape for play scripts during these specific years to determine if plays by diverse playwrights were being published and available for acquisition. The audit demonstrates that both the play script orders and publishing landscape have greatly diversified; however, further work needs to be done to continue diversifying local acquisitions with what is being published, so that library collections of play scripts reflect the university and country's demographics. The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is a unique identifier most often associated with popular magazines, scholarly journals, and newspapers. The scope of ISSN, however, includes many types of grey literature. This article will discuss and provide examples of the types of grey literature in scope for ISSN and describe the bibliographic metadata about these resources created to support each ISSN assignment. Benefits to the originators of grey literature that result from ISSN assignments are highlighted, especially the valuable exposure that the resources gain from the bibliographic records that are created to document ISSN assignments and are included in multiple international databases. As Florida State University transitioned to Canvas in 2017, the Distance Library Services team planned and implemented Springshare LTI, subject-specific Library Tools within the Learning Management System. These tools present invaluable teaching and learning opportunities for the libraries within digital classrooms and offer options for connecting students to library staff and services. With heightened interest from the distance library community in LMS integration, the goal of this paper is to examine an experience with LTI integration after three years of partnership. Furthermore, recommendations will be offered for other libraries interested in implementing LTI integrations in their LMS to support distance learning and on-campus populations. This article focuses on the library of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Anyone may visit the Rutgers University Libraries, its online catalog and web pages. Use of licensed electronic resources is unrestricted on campus, but restricted off campus to Rutgers faculty, students, and staff. Roughly 40% of the circulating Slavic and East European collection pertains to Russian history and literature and is in the Alexander Library; the next largest group or roughly 8,000 volumes pertain to Hungarian literature and history. One-third of each of these collections is in Russian or Hungarian. There are smaller but undetermined Slavic collections at Rutgers in the Annex and the Dana Library in Rutgers-Newark, both of which are included in the estimate of 25,000 volumes. The Library of the American Hungarian Foundation at 300 Somerset Street in New Brunswick is affiliated with Rutgers University Libraries. Roughly one-fourth of its collection was cataloged in IRIS and RLIN by 2003 and available for circulation to Rutgers users and through interlibrary loan.

Libraries are a core element of local cultural policies. In a country historically marked by national integration policies aiming at cultural homogeneity, what is the relationship of local public libraries to the socio-cultural diversity of populations? The results of qualitative studies conducted in three major cities (Bordeaux, Rennes and Nantes) display a growing awareness of more diverse users and adaptations to their demands. Librarians, at the same time, do not give up the universalist ideals central to the history of their institutions and their current activities. Despite differences between cities, the case of public libraries illustrates the possibility to combine universalism and diversity in the policies implemented in France, here in the cultural field. My study demonstrates how local institutions can use their room for manoevre and combine elements of the republican ideal and adjustments to a diverse social reality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Librarians from three Kentucky public universities conducted a survey on the prevalence and success of article purchasing programs. They found that a majority of academic libraries offer article purchasing to reduce costs and expand access to resources, and most of these institutions believe their article purchasing program is successful.
