Sexual revictimization can have a negative impact on many facets of women's wellbeing, yet limited evidence exists regarding specific interventions that support healing and the reduction of further revictimization. This paper will explore regional and rural women's experience of a group-based empowerment program, the Shark Cage program, in Victoria, Australia. The "Shark Cage" program aims to address revictimization by empowering women and girls to build personal boundaries and assertiveness within the context of gender equality and human rights. Data were collected via participant observations across the 8-week program, in combination with semi-structured interviews with participants (N = 11) pre and post intervention. All participants had access to therapeutic support outside of the program. Findings indicate that the program fostered connections among women with shared experiences of sexual revictimization, reducing feelings of isolation. Participants detailed the benefit of developing and practicing skills in reducing revictimization, such as assertiveness and boundary setting. Program learning and recovery was embedded within a network of embodied emotions, social connections, cultural norms and place-based relations that influenced how participants recovery could be understood, processed and addressed. Posttraumatic growth (PTG) is emerging in the published literature as an important aspect of postdisaster recovery. Despite these research insights into the positive transformations that people experience, PTG has not been formally operationalised in postdisaster psychosocial recovery efforts. This paper presents findings from a mixed methods study of people affected by the 2009 Victorian “Black Saturday” bushfires. Data from in-depth interviews and the PTG Inventory-Short Form (PTGI-SF) with 20 participants gathered five years after the fires were used to gain new insights into perceptions of postdisaster growth. Higher levels of growth were reported by those who were personally involved. Thematic findings were consistent with most of the PTGI-SF factors. Additionally, growth through connections, the acquisition of new skills, and creative engagement were identified as core growth processes. These processes support conceptualising postdisaster PTG in broader relational terms, rather than more typically psychological ones, which may then inform effective interventions. IMPLICATIONS Many people report posttraumatic growth as part of their disaster recovery experiences. Growth experiences are diverse, and include the acquisition of new skills and connections as well as intrapsychic changes. Social workers can support growth by understanding the complex interaction with trauma experiences. In this paper, we explore the relational dynamics of alcohol consumption by university students, drawing on qualitative interviews with fifty undergraduates in Victoria, Australia. We argue that university drinking is a social practice comprised of a bundle of activities that operate together to reinforce excessive consumption. Drawing on a distinct version of social practice theory, we conceptualise drinking as an organising principle of university social life with interacting elements – meanings, materials and competences. The meanings of drinking include cultural conventions, expectations and socially shared meanings that alcohol is central to student life. Materials of drinking include objects and infrastructures such as, beverage choice, drinking venues and mobile phones. Drinking competences include managing bodily effects of alcohol but also social relationships while consuming alcohol. The distinct social practice perspective we utilise can assist public health to address the interrelated dynamics of alcohol consumption as a social practice, with its own trajectory into which students are recruited and become carriers of the practice while at university. The year 2014 marked the abolition of the Baby Bonus and its replacement with a substantially reduced parenting payment. While often criticised as "middle-class welfare," or publicly denounced due to its purported misuse by disadvantaged mothers, this paper argues that the Baby Bonus provided valuable financial assistance to families experiencing high financial stress. To investigate young women's experience of receiving the Baby Bonus, 19 semistructured interviews were conducted with young mothers in Melbourne who had recently had babies. Many were experiencing financial stress and this payment provided much needed financial support for the basic costs arising from having a baby. Several mothers perceived work as a luxury that was out of reach due to high childcare costs relative to their earning capacity and therefore saw Paid Parental Leave as a further privilege unavailable to them. Our results suggest that while the concerns of policymakers to achieve the best use of scarce resources are critical, it should also be acknowledged that the policy change may have serious implications for many young mothers and may exacerbate disadvantage, and young mothers' sense of alienation, ultimately leading to greater inequalities. BackgroundDespite good policy intentions, people with intellectual disability continue to be socially excluded. Social geographers suggest the potential of self-authored spaces as catalysts for social inclusion. One such space, self-advocacy, is commonly perceived as part of a political movement for social change rather than a vehicle for social inclusion of its members. This paper investigated what involvement in self-advocacy has meant to long-term members of a self-advocacy group in Victoria, Australia. MethodsIn-depth interviews were conducted with 12 self-advocates about their reflections on involvement in the group. These data together with the commentary of 5 self-advocates during interviews with 18 self-advocacy supporters about their recollections of involvement in the group were transcribed and analysed thematically. FindingsThrough their involvement in self-advocacy, members of the group had gained a sense of belonging, social connections, and purposeful occupation, which included paid project work, lobbying, and organisational leadership and management. ConclusionsThis study suggests that self-advocacy groups can be places that foster social inclusion, potentially offering “membership” of an exclusive group, a wider social movement and of mainstream society. Background This paper explores how group home staff in Victoria, Australia, responded to residents with an intellectual disability (ID) as residents developed age-related health conditions. Method The analysis was based on a longitudinal study that followed 17 ageing group home residents over a 3-year period. Eighty-three interviews were conducted with 30 group home staff in 17 group homes. Dimensional analysis, a variant of grounded theory, guided data collection and analysis. Results Findings revealed that the organisations all had systems in place to address health issues. However, the results also suggest an inability of staff to differentiate between significant health conditions and normal age-related changes, thus contributing to delays in care for serious medical conditions. Conclusions Lack of knowledge about normal ageing and an absence of organisational policies influence timeliness of diagnosis and treatment for people with ID. Group home staff could be more effective advocates for older residents, leading to improvements in health outcomes, if they had basic knowledge about normal ageing and symptoms of common age-related illnesses and if group home agencies provided clearer guidance to their staff. Recognition of human rights on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex status by the United Nations has led to the development of new policies concerning homophobia and transphobia in educational contexts. This paper examines new Australian education policies impacting gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (GLBTIQ) teachers. A policy review uncovered a range of protections for GLBTIQ teachers in contexts such as the State of Victoria, alongside restrictions. Experiences of policy discussed in pilot study data from surveys of 63 Victorian GLBTIQ teachers, and in-depth interviews with nine Victorian GLBTIQ teachers, revealed that GLBTIQ teachers were relatively unaware of the protections available to them, compared to their awareness of protections for students. Many teachers were out as lesbian or gay to some staff members but fewer had come out to students. Teachers in religious schools had more difficulties, causing some to leave the sector. This paper describes the evaluation of the Transition Care Cognitive Assessment and Management Pilot (TC CAMP) at a residential care facility in Victoria, Australia. Transition care aims to provide a goal-oriented time-limited service to older people at the conclusion of an episode of hospital care. The TC CAMP was established to specifically meet the needs of people with cognitive impairment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of the TC CAMP. The evaluation sought to explore the perceptions ofstaffandfamily carers, and outcomes for the person with dementia. Methods consisted of file audits, focus groups and individual interviews with nursing staff and carers. This evaluation found that it was possible to provide appropriate transition care to people with cognitive impair-ment who exhibited behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. The TC CAMP achieved length of stay and readmission rates that were comparable with transition care for cognitively intact people. The role of the Clinical Nurse Consultant was highly valued by staffand families involved in TC CAMP. The findings from TC CAMP suggest a suit-able environment, availability of trained and resourced nursing and clinical staff and clear roles and expectations for all stakeholders should be considered in implementation of this model of care. The reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect is a mandated role of medical doctors, nurses, police and teachers in Victoria, Australia. This study explored care co-ordinator reports about provision of six evidence-based psychosocial interventions (PSIs) for people living with psychosis, to better understand decision-making about provision. Conducted as an adjunct to the Second Australian National Survey of Psychosis in one catchment area, care co-ordinators completed a structured interview about evidence-based PSIs provided to 33 consumers as part of their community mental health care. Descriptive analyses were conducted. Care co-ordinators reported most consumers were provided at least one of the PSIs during the previous year; all were provided at least one non-evidence-based, typically briefer or simpler, alternative. Relapse Prevention Planning using early warning signs was reported as most provided; Family Psychoeducation was the least provided but rated as most helpful. The primary reason for non-provision of PSIs was that they had not been offered, with lack of relevance the most cited explanation. PSIs may be more commonly provided than previously reported, if non-evidence-based alternatives are also considered: reasons for not offering evidence-based PSIs require further study. Meaningful guidelines are needed about when and how to offer PSIs in collaborative practice, including briefer or simpler interventions when preferred over more complex interventions. Universal newborn hearing screening programs have led to early identification of infants with congenital mild bilateral hearing loss (MBHL). The current lack of evidence-based protocols to guide audiological management of infants with MBHL has led to clinical equipoise about fitting of hearing aids. The purpose of this study was to increase understanding about the perspectives of paediatric audiologists on factors influencing their management of MBHLin infants and young children. A qualitative descriptive research methodology involving semi-structured interviews with audiologists. Twenty-three paediatric audiologists in diagnostic and rehabilitation settings in Victoria, Australia. Three main themes that influenced management were identified. These include: (1) evidence, or the lack of it, influences audiologists' practice; (2) audiologists recognise the need to be fluid; and (3) family characteristics and parents' perspectives. "Audiologists delivering family-centred practice" was identified as an overarching theme across these factors. Audiologists recognised the importance of adopting a family-centred approach in their management of MBHL in infants and young children. Embodied in their practice was the acknowledgement of limited evidence, the consideration of multiple child and family factors, and the incorporation of perspectives of parents and families in adopting a fluid approach to provide individualised services. Despite the prevalence of mental health concerns among those who live in residential aged care, many residential aged care facilities (RACFs) provide little by way of psychological support. Drawing on qualitative data obtained from interviews with residents from across 15 RACFs in Victoria, Australia, this article adds to understandings about the diversity and impact of mental health challenges experienced by residents, and gaps in the knowledge of staff about how to address such. Thus, it also offers evidence of the urgent need for RACFs to provide residents both better access to specialist mental health practitioners and training to care staff on mental health issues. Despite the body being central to the experience of ageing, little attention has been paid to how relationships may mediate the experience of ageing bodies. This article considers older Australian women's accounts of their bodies and of embodied experiences in the context of both long-term and newly formed intimate relationships. Drawn from a broader study of ageing and sexuality, our analyses of semi-structured interviews with 20 women aged 55 to 72 revealed that while women were frequently unhappy with their appearance, this was less important to them in relationships. During sexual intimacy, embodied experience and the capacity for bodies to be sites of pleasure were emphasised. Overall, participants experienced their bodies as sites of negotiation between socially constructed meanings of older bodies and subjectively produced ones, in complex and sometimes contradictory ways that fell outside simple distinctions between social and individual. Healthcare decision making in motor neurone disease (MND) focuses on symptom management and quality of life. Decision making may be affected by personal approach to receiving information, decision making style, and disease symptoms. This study explored decision making from the perspectives of people living with motor neurone disease (plwMND). The issues impacting engagement and involvement in healthcare decisions were investigated. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 plwMND and 15 carers. Interview data was inductively analysed to identify and describe patterns and themes. Data analysis identified six overarching themes: Dimensions of decision making; Window of opportunity for choice; Intrinsic influences on decision making; Extrinsic influences impacting decision making; Planning in uncertainty; and, Communication is core. Many participants did not identify a process of "decision-making" except if considering early gastrostomy placement. Information provision requires a balance between ensuring patients are informed but not overwhelmed. Communication impairment impacts involvement. Healthcare professionals' communication style influences engagement in decision making. PlwMND perceive a lack of clinical decisions to make because disease symptoms and clinical phenotypes dictate necessary interventions. PlwMND describe communication impairment as a barrier to involvement in decision making and extra support is required to ensure they maintain engagement. People living with MND (plwMND) perceive they have few clinical decisions to make and viewed this process as "accepting a recommendation", rather than "making a decision" although early gastrostomy placement is the exception with considerable deliberation evident. Specialist multidisciplinary clinic advice is especially helpful for plwMND without dysphagia (swallowing problems) when considering early gastrostomy placement. Communication impairment may be a barrier to involvement in healthcare decisions and extra support to remain engaged is required. Some plwMND choose not to involve others in their decisions, and patients/families with medical or scientific backgrounds are more likely to collaborate with each other outside the context of clinic appointments. Objectives: Though several studies have focused on risk factors associated with excess weight gain, little is known about the extent to which socio-cultural beliefs about body sizes may contribute to risk of excess weight gain, especially in non-Western migrant communities. Drawing on socio-cultural and attribution theories, this study mainly explored socio-cultural beliefs about an ideal body size among Australian residents who were born in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Implications of body size beliefs for risk of excess weight gain after immigration have also been discussed. Design: Employing a qualitative design, 24 in-depth interviews were conducted with Australian residents who were born in SSA. Thematic content analysis was undertaken to ensure that participants' experiences and views were clearly captured. Results: According to the participants, a moderately large body size is idealised in the SSA community and post-migration weight gain is commonly regarded as evidence of well-being. While desirability of a moderately large body size was noted by some participants, others were concerned about health risks (e.g. high blood pressure) associated with excess weight gain. Moreover, body size ideals seemed to be different for men and women in the SSA community and these ideals were mainly promoted by family and friends. Participants reported that women with very slim (skinny) body sizes are often regarded as persons suffering from health problems, whereas those with 'plumpy' body types are often considered beautiful. Participants also noted that men are expected to look well-built and muscular while those with big bellies are often seen as financially rich. Conclusions: Participants' interpretation of post-migration weight gain as evidence of well-being calls for urgent intervention as risk of excess weight gain appear to be high in this immigrant group. Objective: This study aimed to explore the perspectives of caregivers regarding the information and support they received following diagnosis of their child’s hearing loss. Design: A mixed methods explanatory sequential design was conducted. Study sample: A total of 445 caregivers of children completed a written survey, and five parents participated in qualitative in-depth interviews. Results: The most common sources of information for caregivers were discussion with an audiologist, written information, and discussion with a medical professional. Approximately 85% of caregivers reported they were satisfied with the personal/emotional support and information received from service providers. Additional comments from 91 caregivers indicated that 11% experienced a breakdown in information transfer with health professionals. Interviews conducted with five parents from three families revealed two themes which described the diagnostic period as a difficult and emotional experience for parents: (1) support and information provided during diagnosis: what happens first? and (2) accessing early intervention services following a diagnosis of hearing loss: navigating the maze. Conclusions: The findings of this study give insight into the perspectives of caregivers who have a child diagnosed with hearing loss. Objective: The present study aimed to explore the nature of parental involvement in the intervention of children with hearing loss, as experienced by parents. Design: A qualitative descriptive methodology was adopted to conduct semi-structured in-depth interviews with a purposive sample of parents who have a child with hearing loss. Study sample: Seventeen parents of 11 children aged 6-9 years participated in this study. Results: The overarching theme of parents taking the central role was identified using thematic analysis. This overarching theme connected five themes which described the nature of parental involvement: (1) parents work behind the scenes; (2) parents act as ‘case managers’; (3) parents always have their child’s language development in mind; (4) parents’ role extends to advocacy for all children with hearing loss; and (5) parents serve a number of roles, but at the end of the day, they are parents. Conclusions: The results indicate that parental involvement in the intervention of children with hearing loss is multifaceted in nature and incorporates a broad range of behaviours and practices. Background: Death anxiety is a known phenomenon in older people of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD) hospitalised for end-of-life (EOL) care. Little is known about how nurses assuage death anxiety in this population. Aims: To investigate strategies used by nurses to assuage death anxiety and facilitate a good death in older CALD Australians hospitalised for EOL care. Methods: Advanced as a qualitative descriptive inquiry, a purposeful sample of 22 nurses was recruited from four Victorian healthcare services. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis processes. Findings: Nurses used three key strategies: recognising death anxiety; delineating its dimensions; and initiating conventional nursingcaring behaviours to help contain it. Contrary to expectations, cultural similarities rather than differences were found in the strategies used. Conclusions: Nursing strategies for recognising, delineating, and managing death anxiety in older CALD people hospitalised at the EOL is an important component of quality EOL care. Objectives: To determine if domains included in popular measurement systems (e.g. the Peds QL™) reflect the adolescent survivor of a brain injury's sense of QoL and explore this relationship in reference to an emerging model of wellbeing in the adolescent with TBI. Methods: Mixed methods; adolescent QoL assessed using the PedsQL™ self-report and a semi-structured interview created by the lead author. Adolescent self-report was compared to adolescent narratives. Results: Ten adolescents participated. Adolescent PedsQL™ total was within normal limits. Adolescents reported that changes identified by the PedsQL were not important and did not impact on their sense of QoL. The importance on social components of QoL-as opposed to cognitive-provide additional support of the emerging model of wellbeing in adolescents with TBI. Conclusions: The PedsQL can identify changes post-TBI, but fails to consider whether these changes are relevant to the adolescent. Alternate methods of exploring QoL-which emphasize the interaction of social networks and friendships, should be considered to avoid an oblique view of QoL outcomes after TBI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the last 30 years, the risks to public health from working conditions have subtly shifted in line with new economic regimes, notably the shift towards contractualist, individualised market driven and ‘flexible’ regulation of employment associated with the neo-liberal project. Yet, the resulting transformation in temporal schedules has occurred without due consideration of potential health impacts. We contend that contemporary employment policies pose a threat to public health because of their impact on how time is valued, used and experienced. In particular, time matters for earning an income and for basic health behaviours, like healthy eating. The sociological theory of timescapes is used to interpret a qualitative study of food consumption and labour market engagement practices among three generations of Australians. We find that wide variability in individual employment schedules is accompanied by desynchronised social lives and less healthy eating practices. The research leads us to theorise that employment regimes that are flexible for employers require workers to live flexible or fluid cultural lives, disembedded from the temporal structure of previous social rituals, whether culinary, familial or friendship. Background Adults ageing with a disability need lifelong access to health services to meet their changing needs. This study aimed to explore in depth the experience and impact of health service access to address mobility change in adults ageing with cerebral palsy (CP). Method Semistructured interviews were conducted. Qualitative analysis and identification of themes were undertaken on resultant transcripts. Results Six community-living adults (35–52 years) with CP, at levels II and III of the Gross Motor Function Classification System – Extended & Revised (GMFCS-E&R), participated. All described adult-onset mobility decline and had experienced recent falls. Emergent themes explored the accessibility, nature, and type of health service available, comparisons to paediatric experience, and themes related to frustration, perceived control, and self-advocacy. Conclusion Adults with CP report variability in the access to and matching of health service provided with self-perceptions of service type and need to address mobility decline. Adults with CP describe frustration regarding their experiences and may seek opportunities to increase self-advocacy regarding available health and support services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a complex interplay between expectations for speech-language pathologists based in primary schools to work with low-progress readers and various factors that may preclude this from actually occurring. This qualitative study investigated experiences and perspectives of nine Australian speech-language pathologists based in primary schools about their capacity to work with low-progress readers. Building on previous quantitative research, this study supported a relatively even split of those who do and do not work with such children. Moreover, thematic analysis revealed that speech-language pathologists face many more barriers than facilitators when attempting to become a member of written language support teams within schools. Facilitators included having a personal interest in reading difficulty as well as working in an environment supportive of speech-language pathology input for low-progress readers. Barriers to working with or participating in teams to support low-progress readers involved factors such as time constraints, resistance from educational colleagues, and a theoretical divide about reading difficulty between educators and speech-language pathologists. Suggested strategies to enhance school-based speech-language pathologists' capacity to operate as key supports for struggling readers are discussed. These include approaches such as aiming to create a more transparent role definition, professional advocacy, and increasing interdisciplinary collaborations at schools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Australian schools, one significant component of whole-school learning in sexuality education is to provide students with developmentally appropriate curriculum and learning opportunities, with the intention of influencing positive health and well-being. In the situation where the usual classroom teacher is under-prepared or unwilling to teach sexuality education to their students, the use of external providers who are experts in puberty and sexual health is crucial. While the provider is a key influential factor in any sexual health programme, reliance on external providers for the provision of sexuality education in regional Australian cities is not well documented. This mixed-method study aims to address this gap in the literature with a specific focus on Ballarat, where the provision of sexuality education, particularly in primary schools, is heavily reliant on several external providers. Participant schools highlight the need for further positive synergies between the classroom teachers, external agencies and the accessibility of a rigorous curriculum to sustain the delivery of an effective programme to young people in schools. As in many other societies, Australian states have alcohol licensing laws, which specify who can sell alcoholic beverages and under what conditions. Police commonly have the authority to enforce licensing provisions, but are often distracted from this task by more pressing responsibilities. The state of Victoria, Australia, moved in July 2009 to establish a Compliance Directorate (the Directorate), comprising 40 civilian inspectors, to assist and support the work of the Victoria Police in enforcing requirements pertaining to liquor licensees. This article explores early indicators of the impact of this body on licensee compliance in Victoria. The Directorate was presented by the government as a part of an effort to influence cultures that promote harmful consumption of alcohol. Analysis of data and interviews with policy and enforcement staff and licensees indicate that the Directorate has substantially improved enforcement of administrative provisions of licence conditions. In a climate where previously very little liquor licence enforcement existed, the Directorate has been required to negotiate conflicting views on appropriate approaches to regulation, potentially undermining its capacity to pose a real threat of enforcement action for licensees who are in breach of their obligations. Although civilian inspectors promote a better regulated alcohol industry, evidence indicates that provisions prohibiting sales to minors and the intoxicated (with greatest potential to impact on alcohol-associated harm) remain insufficiently enforced. Health and wellbeing is defined internationally as a multi-dimensional and holistic concept, particularly within Indigenous worldviews. However, in Australia there is a lack of detailed frameworks supporting such definitions that are founded on Aboriginal knowledges. Tins study aimed to explore Aboriginal perspectives of child health and wellbeing in an urban setting. Qualitative interviews with 25 care-givers of Aboriginal children living in Melbourne, Australia were conducted. Aboriginal people and community controlled organisations were collaborative partners in all stages of the research. A conceptual fiamework of Aboriginal child health and wellbeing in an urban setting was developed comprising four main themes: Strong Culture; Strong Child; Strong Environment; and Strengths and Challenges. Aboriginal conceptions of culture are considered central to Aboriginal child health and wellbeing in an urban context. A holistic framework that privileges Aboriginal knowledge of child health and wellbeing has not previously been available. Further exploration of socio-ecological models within Aboriginal child health and wellbeing contexts is needed. Research-based community theater can address important life issues in a safe and entertaining environment. This study investigated using a theater performance about widowhood as a medium for facilitating older people's engagement with key life events and countering negative stereotypes. Quantitative questions incorporating semistructured qualitative sections were conducted with 29 older people from a group of 250 audience members who attended the performance. The majority of participants found the performance true to life, enjoyable, of high quality, and a useful learning tool. Objective: To examine the adverse consequences of drinking reported by a subsample of participants in the Australian arm of the GenACIS (Gender Alcohol and Culture: an International Study). Design and method: A random sample of adults (18++, N == 1,608) was interviewed by telephone for self-reported experience of adverse consequences of alcohol consumption. Results: Ten per cent reported experiencing either alcohol related life-area problems and//or physical//emotional//legal problems as a result of their drinking in the previous year. Around 4%% reported getting into a fight after they had been drinking and 6%% reported adverse effects of alcohol on their physical health. There were variations by age, and other correlates, such as drinking patterns, but not by gender. For example, while only 4%% of the sample aged 35--44 reported being injured or injuring someone else, 17%% of the sample aged under 25 reported being injured or injuring another. Conclusions: Young Victorians and those who reported riskier drinking were generally more likely to report experiencing adverse consequences than older Victorians and those who reported less risky drinking. This is important in the Australian context, with a focus on the harms associated with young people's drinking the subject of much recent public debate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
