The olfactory system detects airborne chemicals as odorants. While visual and auditory sensory stimuli are continuous physical quantity, odorants detected by the olfactory system are extremely diverse and discontinuous in nature. The olfactory system utilizes a large repertoire of odorant receptors (ORs) to detect and discriminate a diverse kind of odorants in the environments. After the discovery of ORs in 1991, there has been progress in understanding of the olfactory system. ORs are found in most of vertebrate species and chordates, while there are considerable species-specific variations. In addition, specific additional receptors are known to exist for olfactory subsystems in some species. In mice, there are ∼1,000 types of functional OR genes in the genome, and each olfactory sensory neuron (OSN) expresses just one type of OR out of ∼1,000. OSNs expressing a given type of OR converge their axons to a specific set of glomeruli in the olfactory bulb. The glomerular map formed in the olfactory bulb is the basis for odor discrimination. In glomeruli, sensory inputs are relayed to second-order neurons, mitral and tufted (M/T) cells, which project axons to the olfactory cortex. The olfactory system mediates not only stereotyped innate behaviors, such as attraction and aversion, but also more flexible learned behaviors. For this purpose, projections from the olfactory bulb to the olfactory cortex are stereotyped in some, but divergent in other areas. For example, neurons in the piriform cortex receive divergent inputs from multiple glomeruli and mediate learned odor recognition, whereas neurons in the cortical amygdala receive inputs from specific glomeruli and mediate innate odor responses. Olfactory information is further conveyed to the orbitofrontal cortex, insula, and hippocampus, where it interacts with non-olfactory information.

This textbook shows how to bring theoretical concepts from finance and econometrics to the data. Focusing on coding and data analysis with R, we show how to conduct research in empirical finance from scratch. We start by introducing the concepts of tidy data and coding principles using the tidyverse family of R packages. Code is provided to prepare common open-source and proprietary financial data sources (CRSP, Compustat, Mergent FISD, TRACE) and organize them in a database. We reuse these data in all the subsequent chapters, which we keep as self-contained as possible. The empirical applications range from key concepts of empirical asset pricing (beta estimation, portfolio sorts, performance analysis, Fama-French factors) to modeling and machine learning applications (fixed effects estimation, clustering standard errors, difference-in-difference estimators, ridge regression, Lasso, Elastic net, random forests, neural networks) and portfolio optimization techniques.

This work evaluates the use of an open-source potential flow solver in the hydrodynamic analysis of floating wind turbine dynamics. The platform in question is a free-float capable TLP design. It performs as barge in the towing condition, and it is a TLP when installed. In the barge mode, it has moon-pool type openings that improve towing dynamics, leading to a complex geometry. The hydrodynamic properties are evaluated in both conditions (i.e., installed and transport) using WAMIT and HAMS. Added mass, potential damping, and wave exciting forces are compared in the frequency domain. Then, the dynamics of the platform in the installed condition is evaluated in time domain, using FAST. The time domain evaluation clarifies whether the differences between solvers affect the estimation of coupled motions resulting from the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic loads.

In 2020, the G20 proposed a solution for the debt-related issues affecting the world's poorest countries due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, their initiatives have failed to meet their objectives. The author argues that the reason for this failure is the inability to bring sovereign countries to the table to re-negotiate their debt agreements with private creditors as they fear credit rating agencies and the prospect of a downgrade. The author refers to this as the 'credit rating impasse'. This book proposes a novel solution. The author asserts that there is a need in the literature to unpick the dynamic that exists and creates that impasse, namely the pressures that exist between sovereign states, private creditors, credit rating agencies, and the geo-political backdrop that is massively influential in the dynamic, that is, the adversarial relationship between China and the US. This book addresses the recent history of debt treatment for poorer countries and related successes and failures: COVID-19-related issues and the development of the Debt Service Suspension Initiative and the Common Framework for Debt Treatment. This book examines the reasons for their failure by analysing the positions of the sovereign states, the division between private and official creditors and between multilateral institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank, credit rating agencies, and the competing political entities of China and the US. It presents a wider picture of the systemic underpinnings to such debt-related issues and, when examined through a geo-political perspective, the subsequent chances of future debt treatment-related successes.

In this book, historical narratives chart how people created forms of agriculture in the highlands of New Guinea and how these practices were transformed through time. The intention is twofold: to clearly establish New Guinea as a region of early agricultural development and plant domestication; and, to develop a contingent, practice-based interpretation of early agriculture that has broader application to other regions of the world. The multi-disciplinary record from the highlands has the potential to challenge and change long held assumptions regarding early agriculture globally, which are usually based on domestication. Early agriculture in the highlands is charted by an exposition of the practices of plant exploitation and cultivation. Practices are ontologically prior because they ultimately produce the phenotypic and genotypic changes in plant species characterised as domestication, as well as the social and environmental transformations associated with agriculture. They are also methodologically prior because they emplace plants in specific historico-geographic contexts.

All languages and cultures appear to have one or more "mind-like" constructs that supplement the human body. Linguistic evidence suggests they all have a word for someone, and another word for body, but that doesn’t mean that whatever else makes up a human being (i.e. someone) apart from the body is the same everywhere. Nonetheless, the (Anglo) mind is often reified and thought of in universal terms. This volume adds to the literature that denounces such reification. It looks at Japanese, Longgu (an Oceanic language), Thai, and Old Norse-Icelandic, spelling out, in a culturally neutral Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM), how the "mindlike" constructs in these languages differ from the Anglo mind.
