The PrEPARE Project is a repeated, cross-sectional study of Australian gay and bisexual men’s (GBM) attitudes to biomedical HIV prevention, particularly pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and HIV treatment asprevention (TasP). The study was first conducted in 2011, and has been repeated every two years. The main method of data collection is a national online survey of Australian GBM, primarily advertised through Facebook. This report focuses on the 2019 survey results, but also includes analyses of change over time in key measures, such as willingness to use PrEP and belief that HIV treatment prevents transmission.

The Centre for Social Research in Health was commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Health to establish the basis for a national behavioural survey on sexual health among young people aged 15 to 29 years in Australia. This report presents an overview of the data collected from heterosexual and non-heterosexual respondents as part of the 2017 Debrief cross-sectional survey. This includes results on 18 indicator variables relating to STI-related knowledge, attitudes and practices as well as exposure to and appreciation of sexual health promotion messages.

Between May and July 2017, the IYLL periodic survey recruited 2,831 heterosexually-identified young people aged 15-29 years and living in New South Wales (NSW). On average, participants were 20.9 years old with half of the sample aged 15-19 years. More female than male participants responded to the survey (60.0% versus 40.0%). Of the participants, two thirds (66.8%) reported having had oral, vaginal or anal sex and 33.2% never had sex.As in the 2016 IYLL survey, participants in the 2017 survey were asked about their knowledge of sexually transmissible infections (STIs), their sexual health-related attitudes, their condom use and testing for STIs or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) as well as their engagement with and perception of sexual health promotion initiatives.

From its start in 1997, the project has been funded by the Queensland Department of Health. The major aim of the survey is to provide data on sexual, drug use and testing practices related to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) among gay men. The data presented in this report are from the period 2013 to 2017.

The Sydney Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited at a range of gay community sites in Sydney. Since 1996 the project has been funded by theNSW Ministry of Health and supported by ACON and Positive Life NSW. The major aim of the survey is to provide data on sexual, drug use and testing practices related to the transmission of HIV and other sexuallytransmissible infections (STIs) among gay men in Sydney. The data presented in this report are from the period 2013 to 2017.

Between December 2015 and March 2016, the ‘It’s Your Love Life’ periodic survey recruited 2,120heterosexually-identified young people aged 15–29 years and living in New South Wales. The data collected through the survey contributes new knowledge on the attitudes and practices of heterosexualyoung people and their exposure to sexual health promotion initiatives.

The most recent survey, the eleventh in South Australia, was conducted in November and December 2016 to coincide with the Adelaide Feast Festival.

This study aimed to explore the experience of married men who have sex with men (MMSM) in managing their sexual identity in everyday life and their experience of stigma, depression and anxiety. In-depth, semi-structured telephone interviews with 16 MMSM from Queensland, NewSouth Wales (NSW), Victoria and Tasmania were conducted between September 2015 and October 2016. Interviews were audio-recorded and data were thematically analysed.

The Melbourne Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men recruited from a range of gay community sites in Melbourne. The major aim of the survey is to provide data on sexual, drug use and testing practices related to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) among gay men. The most recent survey, the eighteenth in Melbourne,recruited a total of 2,886 men in January 2016. The majority of these men (n=2585, 89.6%) were recruited using face-to face recruitment by trained staff at gay social venues (e.g. bars, community organizations),sex-on-premises venues, sexual health clinics and the Midsumma Carnival. The remaining 301 men (10.4%) participated through an online version of the survey.

The Canberra Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men. Participants are recruited from gay venues and community events. The major aim of the survey is toprovide data on sexual, drug use and testing practices related to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) among gay men. From its start in 2000, the project has been funded by ACT Health and coordinated by the AIDS Action Council of the ACT. In the 2015 survey, the sixth conducted in Canberra, 303 men were recruited from the Canberra springOUT Festival Fair Day, gay social venues, a sex-on-premises venue, a sexual health clinic and, for the first time, through online recruitment. Online recruitment was conducted through the social networking site Facebook. Men were directed to a website with an online version of the GCPS questionnaire (http://gcpsonline.net). The advertisements were targeted to all men aged16 and above who were located in the Australian Capital Territory and indicated in their Facebook profile that they were ‘interested’ in men.

The Gay Community Periodic Surveys (GCPS) are cross-sectional surveys of gay and homosexually active men in Australia. The primary aim of the surveys is to provide data on sexual, drug use and testing practices related to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) among gay men. The first GCPS was conducted in Sydney in 1996, with recruitment commencing in Melbourne, Queensland (Brisbane, Gold Coast, Cairns), Adelaide, Perth, and Canberra in subsequent years. In 2014, the GCPS was conducted for the first time in Tasmania. While it had not been conducted in Tasmania prior to this, three small surveys of gay men, which used questions based on those from the GCPS, were conducted in 1997, 1998, and 2002.

The most recent survey, the seventeenth in Queensland, was conducted in August-September 2014 to coincide with Cairns Tropical Pride and Brisbane Pride.

The major aim of the survey is to provide data on sexual, drug use, and testing practices related to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) among gay men. The most recent survey, the tenth in South Australia, was conducted between November and December 2014 to coincide with the Adelaide Feast Festival.

The major aim of the survey is to provide data on sexual, drug use, and testing practices related to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) among gay men. The most recent survey, the seventeenth in Melbourne, recruited a total of 3,006 men in January 2015. The majority of these men (n=2,429, 81%) were recruited using face-to-face recruitment by trained staff at gay social venues (e.g. bars and community organisations), sex-on-premises venues, sexual health clinics, and the Midsumma Carnival. The remaining 577 men (19%) participated through an online version of the survey.

The most recent survey, the sixteenth in Melbourne, recruited 1,872 men in January 2014 at gay social venues (e.g. bars), sex- on-premises venues, sexual health clinics and the Midsumma Carnival. The response rate was 71.1%. The data presented in this report are from the period 2010 to 2014.

The Perth Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay andhomosexually active men recruited at a range of gay community sites in Perth. Theproject is funded by the Western Australian Department of Health and supportedby the Western Australian Centre for Health Promotion Research and the WesternAustralian AIDS Council. The Centre for Social Research in Health coordinates thesurvey with support from The Kirby Institute.The major aim of the survey is to provide data on sexual, drug use and testingpractices related to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) among gay men. The most recent survey, the ninth in Perth, was conducted in February 2014, recruiting 681 men from gay social venues (e.g. bars), sex-on-premises venues, a sexual health clinic and Perth Pride Fair Day. The data presented in this report are based on last 5 surveys conducted between 2006 and 2014.

The Canberra Gay Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay and homosexually active men. Participants are recruited from gay venues and community events. The major aim of the survey is to provide data on sexual, drug use and testing practices related to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) among gay men. From its start in 2000, the project has been funded by ACT Health and coordinated by the AIDS Action Council of the ACT. In the 2013 survey, the sixth conducted in Canberra, 173 men were recruited from the Canberra springOUT Festival Fair Day, gay social venues and a sex-on-premises venue.
