This report presents the results of archaeological testing at two sites located north of Concho, Apache County, Arizona. SWCA conducted mechanical trenching at AZ Q:6:69 (ASM) and AZ Q:6:72 (ASM) at the request of Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District (SRP) prior to construction of two new wells and installation of approximately 10,700 feet of new pipeline, which will connect to the existing water delivery system at the Coronado Generating Station. The project area is located in Sections 16 and 21, T13N R26E, Gila and Salt River Baseline and Meridian, Apache County, Arizona. This project was conducted in compliance with the Arizona Antiquities Act since part of the project was on Arizona State Trust Lands (Arizona State Land Department Right-of-Way Application No. 14-106407 and Right-of-Entry Application No. 30-105110). Fieldwork was conducted under an Arizona Antiquities Act project specific permit issued by the Arizona State Museum (permit number 2002-113ps). The purpose of testing at these sites was to determine if intact subsurface cultural deposits existed within the Area of Potential Effect (APE) for the pipeline and the well pads. Trenching and surface collections were conducted at both sites in September 2002. No features were found to exist in the preferred pipeline corridor adjacent to AZ Q:6:69 (ASM). It appeared that significant features were in the APE at site AZ Q:6:72 (ASM) and data recovery was recommended there. In April 2003, additional trenching and backhoe stripping occurred at AZ Q:6:72 (ASM). The features that had been identified during testing were outside the well pad footprint and stripping did not reveal any new features. Therefore, construction of the pipeline and well pads do not appear to significantly affect either site and no further work is recommended. However, areas where features are located at both sites should be fenced or monitored during any construction activities to prevent any accidental adverse impacts.

Salt River Project (SRP) proposes to reroute the Hubbell Ranch Road to bypass the mining activities at the SRP Fence Lake Coal Mine. SRP contracted with SWCA, Inc., Environmental Consultants (SWCA), to conduct a cultural resource survey for the Hubbell Ranch Road Bypass. The lead agency for the cultural resources is the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Las Cruces District, Socorro Resource Area. The proposed bypass is on New Mexico State Trust Land leased by SRP. The proposed project area is located within the Upper Sonoran Life Zone with vegetation consisting of grasses, yarrow, rabbitbrush, forbs, and juniper. The elevation ranges between 6690 feet and 6720 feet (2039 and 2048 m) above mean sea level (amsl). The geology of the area is characterized by the late Cretaceous Moreno Hill Formation visible in the mesas and in the Quaternary alluvial deposits of the valley floor. The proposed bypass extends along the east side of a ridge down onto the valley floor. Approximately 25 percent of the ground surface is concealed by vegetation.

On August 15 and 16, 1994, Dennis Gilpin and Richard A. Anduze, archaeologists, and Lex Palmer, historical specialist, of SWCA, Inc., Environmental Consultants, evaluated seven previously recorded archaeological sites and attempted to relocate an eighth in the proposed Fence Lake Mine and Railroad Transporation Corridor in Catron County, New Mexico. The project was sponsored by Salt River Project (SRP); the lead federal agency for cultural resources is the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Las Cruces District, Socorro Resource Area. Within the Fence Lake Coal Mine, the land in Section 31 is privately owned and the BLM manages the subsurface mineral rights. The land in Section 15 is New Mexico State Trust Land. The project was conducted under Bureau of Land Management Cultural Resource Use Permit No. 110-2920-94-8 and New Mexico Blanket Survey Permit No. 94/055. An archaeological testing program was undertaken for Salt River Project (SRP) on a parcel of private land being considered as a site for a future SRP substation. The project area, which lies near the prehistoric Hohokam village of Las Canopas (AZ U:9:46 [ASU]), totals about 2.6 acres, just over three percent of which was sampled with a combination of systematically and judgementally places backhoe trenches. No subsurface features were identified in any of the trenches, though a few prehistoric artifacts and charcoal were encountered. Archaeological clearance is recommended for the parcel.
