The relation between attachment and parental practices with externalizing (aggression and delinquency) and internalizing (social withdrawal and anxiety/depression) behavioral problems were investigated in this study. Participants were 289 children (from 9 to 12 years old) and 205 caregivers who answered distinct questionnaires: the formers on attachment and the later on parental practices. Results indicated that poor maternal attachment relationships, high levels of parental rejection and being a boy predicted aggression. Moreover, poor paternal attachment and father's low education predicted social withdrawal. Finally, parental rejection was marginally associated with anxiety/depression. The results reinforce, partially, the existing literature and help to understand the complex relationship between parenting and behavioral problems. As relações do vínculo de apego e das práticas parentais com problemas externalizantes (agressividade e delinquência) e internalizantes (retraimento social e ansiedade/depressão) foram investigadas neste estudo. Os participantes foram 289 crianças (9 a12 anos de idade) e 205 cuidadores que responderam questionários sobre vínculo de apego e sobre práticas parentais. Os resultados indicaram que vínculo frágil de apego materno, altos níveis de rejeição parental e o fato de ser menino predizem agressividade. Ademais, vínculo frágil de apego paterno e baixa escolaridade paterna predizem retraimento social. Finalmente, rejeição parental associou-se marginalmente à ansiedade/depressão dos filhos. Os resultados reforçam parcialmente a literatura e auxiliam na compreensão da complexa relação entre parentalidade e problemas comportamentais.

Modelos teóricos inspirados na teoria da história de vida têm avaliado padrões de reprodução humanos em países desenvolvidos, com resultados ainda não conclusivos. Em vista das condições de vida na população brasileira, foram investigadas relações entre marcos da carreira reprodutiva feminina, condições ambientais e variáveis psicossociais relacionadas às condições de criação. Foram entrevistadas 606 mulheres em seis estados. Os resultados apóiam a teoria da história de vida, mostrando associações entre condições de vida na infância e início da vida sexual e da reprodução, mas não com a idade da menarca. Sugerimos que diferentes marcadores da vida reprodutiva podem estar sob controle de diferentes fenômenos e que a diversidade de condições da população brasileira oferece contextos alternativos para testar hipóteses.Several models inspired by the life history theory have assessed the patterns of human reproduction in developed countries with promising but inconclusive results. Considering the diversity of life conditions in Brazil, we investigated the relationship between the time of main events in female reproductive life, environmental conditions and psychosocial variables related to child-rearing. We interviewed 606 women in six different states in Brazil. Results corroborate the life history theory, showing associations among the investigated factors, especially between life conditions during childhood and the beginning of sexual life and reproduction, but not to sexual maturity. We suggest that landmarks in reproductive life, although related, can be under the influence of several phenomena. Diversity of life conditions in Brazil offers alternative contexts to hypotheses testing.

Na presente pesquisa foram comparadas crenças e práticas de cuidado de mães de cidades pequenas e capitais brasileiras. Participaram do estudo 307 mães de cidades pequenas e 299 de capitais, as quais responderam a uma escala que avalia cuidados primários e estimulação. Os resultados indicaram que mães das cidades pequenas afirmaram realizar significativamente mais práticas de cuidados primários do que mães das capitais e estas afirmaram realizar e valorizar significativamente mais práticas de estimulação. Uma maior idade da criança e maior nível educacional da mãe explicaram significativamente a estimulação. Conclui-se que existe certa similaridade nas práticas e crenças das mães, que são independentes do lugar onde elas residem, assim como diferentes ênfases nas práticas de cuidado, dependendo da influência de variáveis sociodemográficas em cada contexto.This study aimed to compare both beliefs and care practices of mothers living in capital cities and small towns. Three hundred seven mothers living in capital cities and 299 in small towns answered a scale that assesses primary care and stimulation. A sociodemographic questionnaire has also been used. The results indicated that mothers from small towns reported developing significantly more practices of primary care than the ones who live in the capitals. Mothers from the capitals value and practice more stimulation than primary care. The age of the child and the educational level of the mother explained significantly the stimulation results. Therefore, it seems there is some similarity in the practices and beliefs of mothers which are independent of the context where they live. There are also different emphases on health care practices, but these are influenced by sociodemographic variables depending on each context.

O estudo teve como objetivo investigar etnoteorias parentais em mães residentes na capital e interior de Santa Catarina. Foram aplicadas escalas de crenças sobre práticas de cuidado, metas de socialização e alocentrismo familiar em 50 mães de cada contexto cultural. Os resultados na capital indicaram predomínio de elementos autônomo-relacionais em práticas e alocentrismo familiar, enquanto que em termos de metas, as mães valorizaram a autonomia da criança. No interior, no que se refere a metas de socialização e alocentrismo familiar, foram identificados aspectos relacionais. Contudo, em termos de crenças sobre práticas de criação, constatou-se maior valorização da autonomia. Concluiu-se que ambos os contextos caracterizam-se por um modelo de self autônomo-relacional, embora com diferentes ênfases de acordo com a dimensão investigada.The aim of this study was to investigate parental ethnotheories of mothers living in the capital city and in the countryside of Santa Catarina State. The participants were 322 adolescents aged between 13 and 17 years old. Two instruments were used to collect data - Parenting Styles Inventory and a questionnaire developed by the authors. Non-parametrical statistics (Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis) were used to analyze the obtained data. Results have shown that: (a) child gender has significant influence on the score of parenting styles; (b) firstborn girls present significantly higher risk of suffering negative parental practices and, (c) the perceived parental favoritism is significantly modulated by both gender and birth order.

Este estudo avaliou o gênero e a ordem de nascimento como variáveis moderadoras das práticas educativas parentais e da percepção da preferência parental a partir do ponto de vista dos filhos. Participaram da pesquisa 322 adolescentes entre 13 e 17 anos. Foram utilizados dois instrumentos para a coleta de dados: Inventário de Estilos Parentais (IEP) e um questionário desenvolvido pelos autores. Os dados foram analisados através da estatística não-paramétrica (Mann-Whitney e Kruskal-Wallis). Através da análise dos resultados, constatou-se que: (a) o gênero dos filhos interfere significativamente nos índices de estilo parental; (b) as primogênitas apresentaram significativamente maior risco de sofrer com as práticas parentais negativas e (c) a percepção da preferência parental é influenciada pelo gênero e ordem de nascimento dos filhos.This study aimed at assessing gender and birth order influence on parenting and perceived parental favoritism from the children perspective. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo investigar os tipos de brincadeiras utilizadas por crianças de 6 a 10 anos de idade que cursam o ensino fundamental e as diferenças de gênero existentes nas brincadeiras. A amostra constituiu-se de 213 crianças matriculadas no ensino fundamental (1ª à 4ª séries) de uma escola da rede privada. O método utilizado foi a entrevista com as crianças em suas salas de aula e a observação direta nos horários de recreio. Os resultados obtidos apontaram que alguns tipos de brincadeiras foram verificados em todas as idades pesquisadas, como por exemplo, as que exigem coordenação motora ampla, os jogos eletrônicos e os jogos de faz de conta. As brincadeiras estereotipadas foram mais pronunciadas entre os meninos de 6 a 8 anos de idade. A diversidade de brincadeiras e a freqüência de eventos observados diminuem entre as crianças de 9 e 10 anos de idade, principalmente entre as meninas. Conclui-se, portanto, que as crianças, mesmo estando em idade escolar, ainda apresentam motivação para brincar e algumas diferenças são encontradas nas brincadeiras no que se refere ao gênero e a idade.This study investigated the different types of plays engaged by 6 to 10 year-old-schoolchildren and their gender differences. The representative sample consisted of 213 children enrolled in a private elementary school (from grade 1 to grade 4). The method utilized was based on interviewing the children in the classrooms and observing them directly outside the classroom during class breaks. The results showed that some types of plays (e.g., electronic and pretending games), which require ample motor functions, were performed by all children. Stereotyped plays were more observed among 6 to 8-year-old-boys. The diversity of games and the frequency of the observed events decreased among 9 to 10-year-old-children, mainly with the girls. It is therefore concluded that children even at school age demonstrate motivations to play, and some differences are found in some plays regarding gender and age.
