Recent theories on the neural correlates of face identification stressed the importance of the available identity-specific semantic and affective information. However, whether such information is essential for the emergence of neural signal of familiarity has not yet been studied in detail. Here, we explored the shared representation of face familiarity between perceptually and personally familiarized identities. We applied a cross-experiment multivariate pattern classification analysis (MVPA), to test if EEG patterns for passive viewing of personally familiar and unfamiliar faces are useful in decoding familiarity in a matching task where familiarity was attained thorough a short perceptual task. Importantly, no additional semantic, contextual, or affective information was provided for the familiarized identities during perceptual familiarization. Although the two datasets originate from different sets of participants who were engaged in two different tasks, familiarity was still decodable in the sorted, same-identity matching trials. This finding indicates that the visual processing of the faces of personally familiar and purely perceptually familiarized identities involve similar mechanisms, leading to cross-classifiable neural patterns., (© 2022. A Gram-negative bacterial strain, named Kb82, was isolated from agricultural soil and a polyphasic approach was used for characterisation and to determine its taxonomic position. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the highest similarity was found with Flavobacterium artemisiae SYP-B1015 (98.2%). The highest ANI (83.3%) and dDDH (26.5%) values were found with Flavobacterium ginsenosidimutans THG 01 and Flavobacterium fluviale HYN0086 T , respectively. The isolate is aerobic with rod-shaped cells, positive for catalase and negative for oxidase tests. The DNA G+C content is 34.7 mol%. The only isoprenoid quinone is menaquinone 6 (MK-6). The major fatty acids are iso-C 15:0 , summed feature 3 (C 16:1 ω7c/C 16:1 ω6c) and iso-C 17:0 3OH. The major polar lipid is phosphatidylethanolamine. On the bases of phenotypic characteristics and analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences, it is concluded that strain Kb82 T represents a novel species in the Flavobacterium genus, for which the name Flavobacterium hungaricum sp. nov. is proposed. Faces are processed in a network of areas within regions of the ventral visual stream. However, familiar faces typically are characterized by additional associated information, such as episodic memories or semantic biographical information as well. The acquisition of such non-sensory, identity-specific knowledge plays a crucial role in our ability to recognize and identify someone we know. The occipital face area (OFA), an early part of the core face-processing network, is recently found to be involved in the formation of identity-specific memory traces but it is currently unclear if this role is limited to unimodal visual information. The current experiments used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to test whether the OFA is involved in the association of a face with identity-specific semantic information, such as the name or job title of a person. We applied an identity-learning task where unfamiliar faces were presented together with a name and a job title in the first encoding phase. Simultaneously, TMS pulses were applied either to the left or right OFA or to Cz, as a control. In the subsequent retrieval phase, the previously seen faces were presented either with two names or with two job titles and the task of the participants was to select the semantic information previously learned. We found that the stimulation of the right or left OFA reduced subsequent retrieval performance for the face-associated job titles. This suggests a causal role of the OFA in the association of faces and related semantic information. Furthermore, in contrast to prior findings, we did not observe hemispherical differences of the TMS intervention, suggesting a similar role of the left and right OFAs in the formation of the visual-semantic associations. Our results suggest the necessity to reconsider the hierarchical face-perception models and support the distributed and recurrent models.

Background: Latest developments as well as established procedures offer alternative treatment approaches to basal cell carcinoma (BCC) when micrographically controlled surgical removal is not a valid option., Objective: Alternative treatment options for periorbital BCC are presented., Methods: A literature search was carried out and a structured display and analysis of the results are given., Results: Micrographically controlled surgical removal represents the gold standard in treatment of BCC. When for various reasons surgical removal is not a valid option, other procedures are required. The alternative treatment options can be divided into three main groups: treatment options for locally advanced or metastasized BCC, topical approaches for small and superficial BCC and prophylactic measures. While radiotherapy and systemic therapy are suitable for locally advanced BCC and are discussed in a tumor board, small and superficial BCC can be treated by topical medication. In cases of a previous BCC history, a prophylactic treatment can be considered. Combinations of systemic treatment and also neoadjuvant or adjuvant approaches before and after surgery are promising options for a successful outcome, which can further improve the standard treatment for locally advanced BCC., Conclusion: Alternative treatment options for periocular BCC are available; however, the use is only indicated when microscopically controlled excision with subsequent oculoplastic reconstruction is not possible. According to the national guidelines a prior presentation to a suitable tumor board is practically compulsory.

Accumulating evidence suggests that besides its function in early facial feature processing, the role of the right occipital face area (rOFA) extends to higher level, image-independent processing. Recent studies hint at the possibility that the activity of this region can be modulated by semantic information as well. To test whether the OFA is sensitive to semantic information in a functionally relevant way, we implemented a cross-domain, name-face priming paradigm combined with state-dependent transcranial magnetic stimulation, whereby stimulation preferentially facilitates the processing of attributes encoded by less active neural populations. Our volunteers performed a familiarity decision task for target face images preceded by primes that were either the name of the same identity (congruent), a name of a different person (incongruent), or the character string 'XXXXX' (no prime). Stimulating the rOFA at target stimulus onset, we observed the disappearance of the behavioral disadvantage of incongruent primes, compared to the vertex control condition. Performance in the congruent and no prime conditions remained intact. This result suggests the existence of neural populations in the rOFA that take part in the semantic processing of identity, probably in interplay with other nodes in the extended face network.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and neuroimaging studies suggest a role of the right occipital face area (rOFA) in early facial feature processing. However, the degree to which rOFA is necessary for the encoding of facial identity has been less clear. Here we used a state-dependent TMS paradigm, where stimulation preferentially facilitates attributes encoded by less active neural populations, to investigate the role of the rOFA in face perception and specifically in image-independent identity processing. Participants performed a familiarity decision task for famous and unknown target faces, preceded by brief (200 ms) or longer (3500 ms) exposures to primes which were either an image of a different identity (DiffID), another image of the same identity (SameID), the same image (SameIMG), or a Fourier-randomized noise pattern (NOISE) while either the rOFA or the vertex as control was stimulated by single-pulse TMS. Strikingly, TMS to the rOFA eliminated the advantage of SameID over DiffID condition, thereby disrupting identity-specific priming, while leaving image-specific priming (better performance for SameIMG vs. SameID) unaffected. Our results suggest that the role of rOFA is not limited to low-level feature processing, and emphasize its role in image-independent facial identity processing and the formation of identity-specific memory traces.

Background: We prospectively examined the effect and the safety of intensity-modulated HDR brachytherapy (IMBT) with focal dose escalation., Materials and Methods: A total of 139 patients undergoing primary therapy for prostate cancer and 11 patients with recurrence were included. Data analysis focused on the following factors: date of primary diagnosis, Gleason score, initial prostate-specific antigen (PSA) value, PSA nadir, volume of the prostate in the transrectal ultrasound, biopsy of the prostate gland, androgen deprivation, chemotherapy, uroflowmetry, pre- and postoperative post-void residual urine (PVR), number of the needles in the prostate lobes and analysis of follow-up data., Results: In the primary therapy group, 87.6 % of the patients had a PSA of 0-4 ng/ml at the time of follow-up, while in the recurrence group 81.8 % of patients were within this range. Overall, 55.8 % of patients in the primary group had a PSA nadir under 0.1 ng/ml, 37.2 % under 1 ng/ml, 5.8 % under 5 ng/ml and 1.2 % (1 patient) over 5 ng/ml. In the recurrence group, 100 % had a PSA nadir under 0.1 ng/dl. Fifty patients of the primary group reported grade 1 toxicity (Common Toxicity Criteria): 29 localized to the bladder and 21 to the rectum. Seventeen patients had grade 2 toxicity of the bladder and 1 patient had grade 3 toxicity of the bladder. Finally there was one grade 4 toxicity due to perforation of the sigmoid colon. In the recurrence group, 3 patients with grade 1 toxicity were observed (2 bladder and 1 bowl). Also 3 patients had grade 2 toxicity of the bladder, 1 patient had a grade 3 bladder toxicity and 1 patient had grade 4 toxicity due to bowl fistula. There were no grade 5 toxicities., Conclusion: The modifications of the "Kiel method" with focal dose escalation was proven as effective in locally advanced prostate carcinoma and in local recurrences of the disease with low level toxicity.

Fatal familial insomnia (FFI) is a rare hereditary human prion disease with unique clinical features including progressive sleep impairment and autonomic dysfunction. The serotonergic system is considered to be involved in the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle. In this study we demonstrate a reduced availability of serotonin transporters of 57% and 73% respectively in a thalamus-hypothalamus region of two FFI patients examined with beta-CIT SPECT as compared to age-expected control values.

The very rare condition of multicentric desmoid tumours involving two distant and apparently independent sites is reported in a 17-year-old man. The tumours grew simultaneously and reached approximately equal size. No evidence of familiar polyposis or any other feature of Gardner's syndrome were noted. The proximal desmoid tumour developed from the left hip region and extended into the femoral bone, whereas the distal mass was attached to the left popliteal fossa infiltrating the flexor muscles, the nerves and vessels. On the basis of the good results published recently in the literature and our own earlier experiences, the intralesional resection of the desmoid tumours was completed with postoperative fractionated radiotherapy.

Tolerance was induced in mice to the antinociceptive effect of heroin by repeated subcutaneous injections of this narcotic analgesic for 3 days. Pretreatment of mice with daily doses of oxytocin (2-200 micrograms/kg body wt.) resulted in an attenuation of heroin tolerance. A single oxytocin injection prior to the first challenge with heroin was as active in attenuating heroin tolerance as daily treatments with the neuropeptide. A single injection of oxytocin prior to the least heroin challenge also attenuated the expression of tolerance. The neuropeptide failed to modify the acute antinociceptive effect of heroin. It is concluded, therefore, that oxytocin interferes with mechanisms involved in the development and expression of tolerance to heroin.
