Aims: The main aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of suicidal ideation and previous suicide attempts among Iranian patients diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes (T1D) and Type-2 diabetes (T2D). Additionally, the study sought to estimate the network structure of depressive symptoms and cognitive functions., Methods: 1073 patients participated in the current study. We used Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Ask Suicide-Screening Questionnaire, diabetes-related factors, and a battery of cognitive functions tasks to estimate network structures. Also, suicidal ideations and suicide attempts prevalence have been estimated. Statistical analyses were performed using R-studio software, including mixed-graphical models (MGMs) for undirected effects and Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) for directed effects., Results: The prevalence of suicidal ideation was 29.97% in T1D and 26.81% in T2D (p < 0.05). The history of suicide attempts was higher in T1D (10.78%) compared to T2D (8.36%) (p < 0.01). In the MRF networks for T1D, suicidal ideation was directly linked to 'feeling guilt (PHQ.6)', 'Suicide (PHQ.9)', HbA1c, and FBS, while the Inhibition node was directly related to suicidal ideation. The DAGs suggested connections between 'depression', HbA1c, and 'inhibition' with suicidal ideation, along with a link between the current family history of suicide attempts and the patient's history of suicide attempts. For T2D, the MRF networks indicated direct links between suicidal ideation and 'anhedonia (PHQ.1)', 'suicide (PHQ.9)', age, being female, and BMI, with inhibition also being directly related to suicidal ideation. The DAGs revealed connections between 'depression', age, and 'inhibition' with suicidal ideation, as well as links between being female or single/divorced and the patient's history of suicide attempts., Conclusion: The findings suggest that suicide ideation is highly prevalent in patients with diabetes, and these symptoms should be carefully monitored in these patients., (© 2024. In January 2019, a 30-year-old woman admitted to our inpatient department presented with undulating fever, pain in several joints, and significantly elevated liver enzymes and lactate dehydrogenase. After extended examination, infection with Brucella melitensis with liver, musculoskeletal, and pulmonary involvement was diagnosed and treated. Diagnosis was based on clinical examination, laboratory findings including seroconversion as a proof of immune response, magnetic resonance imaging, three-phase bone scintigraphy, and F‑18 FDG-PET (F-18 Flourdeoxyglucose positron emission tomography) illustrating the bone involvement and its normalization upon treatment. After treatment the patient showed a remarkable improvement of clinical symptoms within a short period. The patient remained symptom free and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for brucellosis was negative, even at the follow-up examination 12 months after the end of the antibiotic therapy. The family members were also examined due to the similar travel history, and by this, brucellosis was also diagnosed in her husband but not in her children., (© 2021. The present "Good Clinical Practice Recommendations" relate to radiofrequency ablation (RFA) training, execution, and quality control, as well as to pre- and postinterventional standards of care. They are aimed at all physicians who intend to learn to perform, or who are already conducting RFA interventions as well as at thyroid specialists providing pre- and postoperative care to RFA patients in Austria. Adoption of these recommendations is strongly encouraged by the afore-listed professional associations.All RFA interventionists who adhere to these standards shall be listed on a homepage linked to these professional associations entitled "RFA centers in compliance with the GCP recommendations of the ÖSDG/OGNMB/ÖGES/OEGCH-ACE." This will ensure harmonization of RFA training and quality control in the performance of the treatment in Austria.

Prostate cancer is the most frequent cancer type in men in industrialized countries. In case of biochemical recurrent disease of prostate cancer is molecular imaging with PET-CT or PET-MRI a very promising modality for the detection of local recurrence, lymph node involvement or distant metastasis. Of the so far implemented radiopharmaceuticals the radioactive labeled PSMA ligands (i. e. Ga-68 PSMA) have prevailed. There are also in the meanwhile treatment approaches with PSMA ligands (i. e. Lu-177 PSMA) in case of metastatic disease.

Up to now, there has been no software model available that adequately addresses the growing importance of flexibility in using different information tools. Based on Java, Jini technology provides distributed and therefore robust software architecture. In case of an application crash, Jini is able to minimize the damage by adding functions that reverse the effects of the crash. Owing to increasing user mobility, it is necessary to be able to receive location-independent information. The growing use of powerful telecommunications suggests the application of 'wireless application protocol' (WAP) mobile telephones also for medical purposes. This paper presents the application of these new software trends (Jini and wireless application protocol).

The curative treatment of carcinoma of the rectum in the early stage of the disease is radical local surgery. If there is a solitary liver metastasis, resection is also a curative treatment. This report describes a female patient with rectal carcinoma, in whom a solitary liver metastasis in the left lobe was diagnosed only by FDG-PET and verified at surgery. This case report demonstrates the potential role of FDG-PET even for primary staging in detecting occult hepatic and extrahepatic metastases, thus significantly influencing the therapeutic management and prognosis of these patients.

Bone mass is purportedly reduced by an excess of endogenous or exogenous thyroid hormone or perhaps by calcitonin deficiency. Patients who have undergone thyroidectomy could be subject to all of these effects. In the present study we tried to demonstrate, whether lack of calcitonin following thyroidectomy has a significant influence on bone density. We measured thyroid hormone levels, TSH and calcitonin and assessed the bone mass in the hip and lumbar spine of 55 patients (32 f, 23 m), who had undergone a subtotal thyroidectomy between 1938 and 1996 on the reason of a non-toxic goitre. TSH levels were suppressed in 16 patients. Serum concentration of total calcium, intact PTH, osteocalcin were normal in all subjects. The mean fasting calcitonin level was in the patient group 2.09 +/- 0.7 pg/ml and in the control group, age matched healthy volunteers, 2.8 +/- 1.2 pg/ml. However, the serum level of calcitonin was not significantly lower than in the control group. 43 patients had an osteopenia or osteoporosis. The interpretation of the results in this study is hampered by the fact, that in women results may be influenced by involutional osteoporosis. Therefore we focus on the potential for osteoporosis among the 23 men. The results of our study indicates, that there is a significant reduction in bone mass in male after thyroidectomy, no matter whether T4 therapy is given or not, and whether TSH is suppressed or in a normal range.
