The Berry curvature (BC) - a quantity encoding the geometric properties of the electronic wavefunctions in a solid - is at the heart of different Hall-like transport phenomena, including the anomalous Hall and the non-linear Hall and Nernst effects. In non-magnetic quantum materials with acentric crystalline arrangements, local concentrations of BC are generally linked to single-particle wavefunctions that are a quantum superposition of electron and hole excitations. BC-mediated effects are consequently observed in two-dimensional systems with pairs of massive Dirac cones and three-dimensional bulk crystals with quartets of Weyl cones. Here, we demonstrate that in materials equipped with orbital degrees of freedom local BC concentrations can arise even in the complete absence of hole excitations. In these solids, the crystals fields appearing in very low-symmetric structures trigger BCs characterized by hot-spots and singular pinch points. These characteristics naturally yield giant BC dipoles and large non-linear transport responses in time-reversal symmetric conditions., 11 pages, 4 figure and supplemental material (6 pages, figures)

The magnetic skyrmion crystal is a periodic array of a swirling topological spin texture. Since it is regarded as an interference pattern by multiple helical spin density waves, the texture changes with the relative phase shifts among the constituent waves. Although such a phase degree of freedom is relevant to not only magnetism but also transport properties, its effect has not been elucidated thus far. We here theoretically show that a phase shift in the skyrmion crystals leads to a tetra-axial vortex crystal and a meron-antimeron crystal, both of which show a staggered pattern of the scalar spin chirality and give rise to nonreciprocal transport phenomena without the spin-orbit coupling. We demonstrate that such a phase shift can be driven by exchange interactions between the localized spins, thermal fluctuations, and long-range chirality interactions in spin-charge coupled systems. Our results provide a further diversity of topological spin textures and open a new field of emergent electromagnetism by the phase shift engineering., Skyrmions are a type of topological spin texture, which can exist as both an isolated state, and as a skyrmion crystal. Here, Hayami et al present a theoretical study of phase shifts in skyrmion crystals, showing how such phase shifts can lead to other crystalline topological spin textures.

A proposal to study topological models beyond the standard topological classification and that exhibit breakdown of Lorentz invariance is presented. The focus of the investigation relies on their anisotropic quantum critical behavior. We study anisotropic effects on three-dimensional (3D) topological models, computing their anisotropic correlation length critical exponent $$\nu$$ ν obtained from numerical calculations of the penetration length of the zero-energy surface states as a function of the distance to the topological quantum critical point. A generalized Weyl semimetal model with broken time-reversal symmetry is introduced and studied using a modified Dirac equation. An approach to characterize topological surface states in topological insulators when applied to Fermi arcs allows to capture the anisotropic critical exponent $$\theta =\nu _{x}/\nu _{z}$$ θ = ν x / ν z . We also consider the Hopf insulator model, for which the study of the topological surface states yields unusual values for $$\nu$$ ν and for the dynamic critical exponent z. From an analysis of the energy dispersions, we propose a scaling relation $$\nu _{\bar{\alpha }}z_{\bar{\alpha }}=2q$$ ν α ¯ z α ¯ = 2 q and $$\theta =\nu _{x}/\nu _{z}=z_{z}/z_{x}$$ θ = ν x / ν z = z z / z x for $$\nu$$ ν and z that only depends on the Hopf insulator Hamiltonian parameters p and q and the axis direction $$\bar{\alpha }$$ α ¯ . An anisotropic quantum hyperscaling relation is also obtained.

There is tremendous interest in measuring the strong electron–phonon interactions seen in topological Weyl semimetals. The semimetal NbIrTe4 has been proposed to be a Type-II Weyl semimetal with 8 pairs of opposite Chirality Weyl nodes which are very close to the Fermi energy. We show using polarized angular-resolved micro-Raman scattering at two excitation energies that we can extract the phonon mode dependence of the Raman tensor elements from the shape of the scattering efficiency versus angle. This van der Waals semimetal with broken inversion symmetry and 24 atoms per unit cell has 69 possible phonon modes of which we measure 19 modes with frequencies and symmetries consistent with Density Functional Theory calculations. We show that these tensor elements vary substantially in a small energy range which reflects a strong variation of the electron–phonon coupling for these modes.

Wannier tight-binding Hamiltonians (WTBH) provide a computationally efficient way to predict electronic properties of materials. In this work, we develop a computational workflow for high-throughput Wannierization of density functional theory (DFT) based electronic band structure calculations. We apply this workflow to 1771 materials (1406 3D and 365 2D), and we create a database with the resulting WTBHs. We evaluate the accuracy of the WTBHs by comparing the Wannier band structures to directly calculated spin-orbit coupling DFT band structures. Our testing includes k-points outside the grid used in the Wannierization, providing an out-of-sample test of accuracy. We illustrate the use of WTBHs with a few example applications. We also develop a web-app that can be used to predict electronic properties on-the-fly using WTBH from our database. A tight-binding (TB) Hamiltonian is derived for strained silicene from a multi-orbital basis. The derivation is based on the Slater–Koster coupling parameters between different orbitals across the silicene lattice and takes into account arbitrary distortion of the lattice under strain, as well as the first and second-order spin–orbit interactions (SOI). The breaking of the lattice symmetry reveals additional SOI terms which were previously neglected. As an exemplary application, we apply the linearized low-energy TB Hamiltonian to model the current-induced spin accumulation in strained silicene coupled to an in-plane magnetization. The interplay between symmetry-breaking and the additional SOI terms induces an out-of-plane spin accumulation. This spin accumulation remains unbalanced after summing over the Fermi surfaces of the occupied bands and the two valleys, and can thus be utilized for spin torque switching.

The Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) mechanism governs the critical behavior of a wide range of many-body systems. We show here that this phenomenon is not restricted to conventional many body system but also for the strongly correlated parity-time (PT) symmetry quantum criticality. We show explicitly behaviour of topological excitation for the real and imaginary part of the potential are different through the analysis of second order and third order renormalization group (RG). One of the most interesting feature that we observe from our study the presence of hidden QBKT and also conventional QBKT for the real part of the potential whereas there is no such evidence for the imaginary part of the potential. We also present the exact solution for the RG flow lines. We show explicitly how the physics of single field double frequencies sine-Gordon Hamiltonian effectively transform to the dual field double frequencies sine-Gordon Hamiltonian for a certain regime of parameter space. This is the first example in any quantum many body systems. We present the results of second order and third order RG flow results explicitly for the real and imaginary part of the potential. This PT symmetric system can be experimentally tested in ultra-cold atoms. This work provides a new perspective for the PT symmetric quantum criticality.

Topological order can be found in a wide range of physical systems, from crystalline solids, photonic meta-materials and even atmospheric waves to optomechanic, acoustic and atomic systems. Topological systems are a robust foundation for creating quantized channels for transporting electrical current, light, and atmospheric disturbances. These topological effects are quantified in terms of integer-valued ‘invariants’, such as the Chern number, applicable to the quantum Hall effect, or the \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${{\mathbb{Z}}}_{2}$$\end{document}Z2 invariant suitable for topological insulators. Here, we report the engineering of Rashba spin-orbit coupling for a cold atomic gas giving non-trivial topology, without the underlying crystalline structure that conventionally yields integer Chern numbers. We validated our procedure by spectroscopically measuring both branches of the Rashba dispersion relation which touch at a single Dirac point. We then measured the quantum geometry underlying the dispersion relation using matter-wave interferometry to implement a form of quantum state tomography, giving a Berry’s phase with magnitude π. This implies that opening a gap at the Dirac point would give two dispersions (bands) each with half-integer Chern number, potentially implying new forms of topological transport., Here, the authors study topology in spin-orbit coupled 87Rb atoms by using time domain spectroscopy and quantum state tomography. They measure full quantum state to extract the Berry phase of the system and show signatures of a half-integer Chern index.

Although a prototypical Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) soliton exhibits various important topological concepts including particle-antiparticle (PA) symmetry and fractional fermion charges, there have been only few advances in exploring such properties of topological solitons beyond the SSH model. Here, by considering a chirally extended double-Peierls-chain model, we demonstrate novel PA duality and fractional charge e/2 of topological chiral solitons even under the chiral symmetry breaking. This provides a counterexample to the belief that chiral symmetry is necessary for such PA relation and fractionalization of topological solitons in a time-reversal invariant topological system. Furthermore, we discover that topological chiral solitons are re-fractionalized into two subsolitons which also satisfy the PA duality. As a result, such dualities and fractionalizations support the topological $$\mathbb {Z}_4$$ Z 4 algebraic structures. Our findings will inspire researches seeking feasible and promising topological systems, which may lead to new practical applications such as solitronics.

Here, we analyse two Dirac fermion species in two spatial dimensions in the presence of general quartic contact interactions. By employing functional bosonisation techniques, we demonstrate that depending on the couplings of the fermion interactions the system can be effectively described by a rich variety of topologically massive gauge theories. Among these effective theories, we obtain an extended Chern–Simons theory with higher order derivatives as well as two coupled Chern–Simons theories. The realization of the mechanical nonreciprocity requires breaking either the time-reversal symmetry or the material deformation symmetry. The time-reversal asymmetry was the commonly adopted approach to realize dynamic nonreciprocity. However, a static nonreciprocity requires—with no any other option—breaking the material deformation symmetry. By virtue of the Maxwell–Betti reciprocal theorem, the achievement of the static nonreciprocity seems to be conditional by the use of a nonlinear material. Here, we further investigate this and demonstrate a novel “nonreciprocal elasticity” concept. We investigated the conditions of the attainment of effective static nonreciprocity. We revealed that the realization of static nonreciprocity requires breaking the material deformation symmetry under the same kinematical and kinetical conditions, which can be achieved only and only if the material exhibits a nonreciprocal elasticity. By means of experimental and topological mechanics, we demonstrate that the realization of static nonreciprocity requires nonreciprocal elasticity no matter what the material is linear or nonlinear. We experimentally demonstrated linear and nonlinear metamaterials with nonreciprocal elasticities. The developed metamaterials were used to demonstrate that nonreciprocal elasticity is essential to realize static nonreciprocal-topological systems. The nonreciprocal elasticity developed here will open new venues of the design of metamaterials that can effectively break the material deformation symmetry and achieve, both, static and dynamic nonreciprocity.

Valley pseudospin, labeling the pair of energy extrema in momentum space, has been attracting attention because of its potential as a new degree of freedom in manipulating electrons or classical waves. Recently, topological valley edge transport of sound, by virtue of the gapless valley-locked edge states, has been observed in the domain walls of sonic crystals. Here, by constructing a heterostructure with sonic crystals, a topological waveguide is realized. The waveguide states feature gapless dispersion, momentum-valley locking, immunity against defects, and a high capacity for energy transport. With a designable size, the heterostructures are more flexible for interfacing with the existing acoustic devices than the domain wall structures. Such heterostructures may serve as versatile new devices for acoustic wave manipulation, such as acoustic splitting, reflection-free guiding and converging., Here, by constructing a heterostructure with sonic crystals, a topological waveguide is realized by the authors. The waveguide states feature gapless dispersion, momentum-valley locking, immunity against defects, and a high capacity for energy transport.

Weyl semimetals host chiral fermions with distinct chiralities and spin textures. Optical excitations involving those chiral fermions can induce exotic carrier responses, and in turn lead to novel optical phenomena. Here, we discover strong coherent terahertz emission from Weyl semimetal TaAs, which is demonstrated as a unique broadband source of the chiral terahertz wave. The polarization control of the THz emission is achieved by tuning photoexcitation of ultrafast photocurrents via the photogalvanic effect. In the near-infrared regime, the photon-energy dependent nonthermal current due to the predominant circular photogalvanic effect can be attributed to the radical change of the band velocities when the chiral Weyl fermions are excited during selective optical transitions between the tilted anisotropic Weyl cones and the massive bulk bands. Our findings provide a design concept for creating chiral photon sources using quantum materials and open up new opportunities for developing ultrafast opto-electronics using Weyl physics., Here, the authors report photon-energy-dependent terahertz emission and ultrafast photocurrents from the Weyl semimetal, TaAs. The polarization control of the emission is achieved by excitation of the photocurrents whose direction and magnitude depend on the polarization of the femtosecond optical pulses.

Weyl fermions are hypothetical two-component massless relativistic particles in three-dimensional (3D) space, proposed by Hermann Weyl in 1929. Their band-crossing points, called ‘Weyl points’, carry a topological charge and are therefore highly robust. There has been much excitement over recent observations of Weyl points in microwave photonic crystals and the semimetal TaAs. Here, we report on the experimental observation of ‘type-II’ Weyl points of light at optical frequencies, with the photons having a strictly positive group velocity along one spatial direction. We use a 3D structure consisting of laser-written waveguides, and show the presence of type-II Weyl points by observing conical diffraction along one axis when the frequency is tuned to the Weyl point; and observing the associated Fermi arc-like surface states. The realization of Weyl points at optical frequencies allows these novel electromagnetic modes to be further explored in the context of linear, nonlinear, and quantum optics. Three-dimensional(3D) Weyl semimetal(WSM) with linear energy spectra has attracted significant interest. Especially they have been observed experimentally in several solid materials with the breaking of inversion symmetry. Here we predict a new family of particle-hole($${\mathscr{C}}$$ C ) invariant 2D WSMs in the non-Abelian gauge field, which can emerge in the low energy bands being close to Fermi energy (dubbed Weyl-I) and the high energy bands being away from Fermi energy (dubbed Weyl-II), only when the time-reversal symmetry($${\mathscr{T}}$$ T ) of the 2D Dirac semimetal is broken in the presence of in-plane Zeeman fields. Moreover, a 2D Dirac node can split into a pair of Weyl nodes showing the same Berry phase, and the 2D WSM, being protected by $${\mathscr{T}}$$ T symmetry, exhibits four Weyl-I nodes, whose energies are invariant with the variation of the magnetic field. The corresponding Fermi velocity and Berry connection have been calculated. Based on the 2D WSMs, we also examine inhomogeneous pairings of attractive Fermi gases and find a new kind of the LO states with the beat frequency. This 2D WSM provides a realistic and promising platform for exploring and manipulating exotic Weyl physics, which may increase the experimental feasibility in the context of ultracold atoms.

Based on first-principles density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, we report that the transition-metal bis-dithiolene, M3C12S12 (M = Mn and Fe), complexes can be a two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic insulator with nontrivial Chern number. Among various synthetic pathways leading to metal bis-dithiolenes, the simplest choice of ligand, Benzene-hexathiol, connecting metal cations to form a Kagome lattice is studied following the experimental report of time-reversal symmetric isostructural compound Ni3C12S12. We show sulfur and carbon-based ligands play the key role in making the complexes topologically nontrivial. An unusual topological quantum phase transition induced by the on-site Coulomb interaction brings a nearly flat band with a nonzero Chern number as the highest occupied band. With this analysis we explain the electronic structure of the class M3C12S12 and predict the existence of nearly flat band with nonzero Chern number and it can be a fractional Chern insulator candidate with carrier doping.

Interest in topological states of matter burgeoned over a decade ago with the theoretical prediction and experimental detection of topological insulators, especially in bulk three-dimensional insulators that can be tuned out of it by doping. Their superconducting counterpart, the fully-gapped three-dimensional time-reversal-invariant topological superconductors, have evaded discovery in bulk intrinsic superconductors so far. The recently discovered topological metal β-PdBi2 is a unique candidate for tunable bulk topological superconductivity because of its intrinsic superconductivity and spin-orbit-coupling. In this work, we provide experimental transport signatures consistent with fully-gapped 3D time-reversal-invariant topological superconductivity in K-doped β-PdBi2. In particular, we find signatures of odd-parity bulk superconductivity via upper-critical field and magnetization measurements— odd-parity pairing can be argued, given the band structure of β-PdBi2, to result in 3D topological superconductivity. In addition, Andreev spectroscopy reveals surface states protected by time-reversal symmetry which might be possible evidence of Majorana surface states (Majorana cone). Moreover, we find that the undoped bulk system is a trivial superconductor. Thus, we discover β-PdBi2 as a unique bulk material that, on doping, can potentially undergo an unprecedented topological quantum phase transition in the superconducting state.

The recent discovery of a Weyl semimetal in TaAs offers the first Weyl fermion observed in nature and dramatically broadens the classification of topological phases. However, in TaAs it has proven challenging to study the rich transport phenomena arising from emergent Weyl fermions. The series MoxW1−xTe2 are inversion-breaking, layered, tunable semimetals already under study as a promising platform for new electronics and recently proposed to host Type II, or strongly Lorentz-violating, Weyl fermions. Here we report the discovery of a Weyl semimetal in MoxW1−xTe2 at x=25%. We use pump-probe angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (pump-probe ARPES) to directly observe a topological Fermi arc above the Fermi level, demonstrating a Weyl semimetal. The excellent agreement with calculation suggests that MoxW1−xTe2 is a Type II Weyl semimetal. We also find that certain Weyl points are at the Fermi level, making MoxW1−xTe2 a promising platform for transport and optics experiments on Weyl semimetals., A Type II Weyl fermion semimetal has been predicted in Mo x W1−x Te2, but it awaits experimental evidence. Here, Belopolski et al. observe a topological Fermi arc in Mo x W1−x Te2, showing it originates from a Type II Weyl fermion and offering a new platform to study novel transport phenomena in Weyl semimetals.
