Neuronal death and synaptic loss are principal pathological features of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Amyloid beta oligomers (AβOs) constitute the main neurotoxin underscoring AD pathology. AβOs interact with N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs), resulting in neurotoxic events, including activation of apoptosis and synaptic impairment. Carnosic acid (CA), extracted from Salvia rosmarinus, has been verified its neuroprotective effects in AD. However, the precise mechanisms by which CA induces synaptic protection remain unclear. In this study, we established an in vitro AD model using SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells. We observed that CA improved neuronal survival by suppressing apoptosis. Moreover, CA restored synaptic impairments by increasing expression levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), postsynaptic density protein-95 (PSD-95), and synaptophysin (Syn). Furthermore, we found these protective effects were dependent on inhibiting the phosphorylation of NMDAR subtype 2B (NMDAR2B), which further suppressed calcium overload and promoted activation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)-cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) pathway. Administration of N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA), an agonist of NMDARs, abolished these effects of CA. Our findings demonstrate that CA exerts neuroprotective effects in an in vitro model of AD by regulating NMDAR2B and its downstream cascades, highlighting the therapeutic potential of CA as a NMDARs-targeted candidate in the treatment of AD.

Iron gall inks consist of vitriols (sulphates of certain metals), gall nut extracts; and gum Arabic: after exposure to oxygen, dark-colored compounds of the inks are formed. As the complexity of the composition of iron gall inks renders documents susceptible to environmental influences, this causes the handwriting thereon to fade. These add technical difficulties to the protection of iron gall inks. Therefore, it is particularly important to understand the changes in the inks during the aging process. For this reason, iron gall ink-stained paper specimens were subject to an intense analytical program to investigate their chemical and physical modifications after aging (temperature/humidity, temperature, and ultraviolet light aging), commercial iron gall ink was used for this experiment, making the study more applicable. The changes of iron gall inks were evaluated using color variation, color density, absorbance, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). All results indicate that the temperature, humidity, and UV are harmful to the inks in both physical and chemical terms. Physical damage is mainly the aging of the ink color lightening, color density decreases, of which the color of the samples treated with damp heat for 30 days undergoes the greatest change. The chemical change is represented by the ratio of the concentration of iron ions in different valence states, the amount of Fe3+ in the untreated inks is much greater than that of Fe2+, and the amount of Fe2+ exceeds that of Fe3+ after exposure to different methods of aging. Experiments show that UV light causes the most severe damage to handwriting. The main manifestation thereof is color-fade and the paper surface ink part of the iron ion content changes, with the increase of aging time, the Fe2+ content gradually increases. This experimental study of the changes produced by iron gall inks during aging can provide better technical support for the protection of the ink handwriting.

Background Urinary bladder cancer (UBC) is a common malignancy of the urinary tract; however, the mechanism underlying its high recurrence and responses to immunotherapy remains unclear, making clinical outcome predictions difficult. Epigenetic alterations, especially DNA methylation, play important roles in bladder cancer development and are increasingly being investigated as biomarkers for diagnostic or prognostic predictions. However, little is known about hydroxymethylation since previous studies based on bisulfite-sequencing approaches could not differentiate between 5mC and 5hmC signals, resulting in entangled methylation results. Methods Tissue samples of bladder cancer patients who underwent laparoscopic radical cystectomy (LRC), partial cystectomy (PC), or transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) were collected. We utilized a multi-omics approach to analyze both primary and recurrent bladder cancer samples. By integrating various techniques including RNA sequencing, oxidative reduced-representation bisulfite sequencing (oxRRBS), reduced-representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS), and whole exome sequencing, a comprehensive analysis of the genome, transcriptome, methylome, and hydroxymethylome landscape of these cancers was possible. Results By whole exome sequencing, we identified driver mutations involved in the development of UBC, including those in FGFR3, KDMTA, and KDMT2C. However, few of these driver mutations were associated with the down-regulation of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) or recurrence in UBC. By integrating RRBS and oxRRBS data, we identified fatty acid oxidation-related genes significantly enriched in 5hmC-associated transcription alterations in recurrent bladder cancers. We also observed a series of 5mC hypo differentially methylated regions (DMRs) in the gene body of NFATC1, which is highly involved in T-cell immune responses in bladder cancer samples with high expression of PD-L1. Since 5mC and 5hmC alternations are globally anti-correlated, RRBS-seq-based markers that combine the 5mC and 5hmC signals, attenuate cancer-related signals, and therefore, are not optimal as clinical biomarkers. Conclusions By multi-omics profiling of UBC samples, we showed that epigenetic alternations are more involved compared to genetic mutations in the PD-L1 regulation and recurrence of UBC. As proof of principle, we demonstrated that the combined measurement of 5mC and 5hmC levels by the bisulfite-based method compromises the prediction accuracy of epigenetic biomarkers.

Objective To identify DNA methylation and clinical features, and to construct machine learning classifiers to assign the patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) into responders and non-responders after a 2-week treatment into responders and non-responders. Method Han Chinese patients (291 in total) with MDD comprised the study population. Datasets contained demographic information, environment stress factors, and the methylation levels of 38 methylated sites of tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2) genes in peripheral blood samples. Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) was employed to select features. Five classification algorithms (logistic regression, classification and regression trees, support vector machine, logitboost and random forests) were used to establish the models. Performance metrics (AUC, F-Measure, G-Mean, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value) were computed with 5-fold-cross-validation. Variable importance was evaluated by random forest algorithm. Result RF with RFE outperformed the other models in our samples based on the demographic information and clinical features (AUC = 61.2%, 95%CI: 60.1-62.4%) / TPH2 CpGs features (AUC = 66.6%, 95%CI: 65.4-67.8%) / both clinical and TPH2 CpGs features (AUC = 72.9%, 95%CI: 71.8-74.0%). Conclusion The effects of TPH2 on the early-stage antidepressant response were explored by machine learning algorithms. On the basis of the baseline depression severity and TPH2 CpG sites, machine learning approaches can enhance our ability to predict the early-stage antidepressant response. Some potentially important predictors (e.g., TPH2-10-60 (rs2129575), TPH2-2-163 (rs11178998), age of first onset, age) in early-stage treatment response could be utilized in future fundamental research, drug development and clinical practice.

The transport of fluid and ions across nanotubes or nanochannels has attracted great attention due to the ultrahigh energy power density and slip length, with applications in water purification, desalination, energy conversion and even ion-based neuromorphic computing. Investigation on individual nanotube or nanochannel is essential in revealing the fundamental mechanism as well as demonstrating the property unambiguously. Surprisingly, while carbon nanotube is the pioneering and one of the most attractive systems for nanofluidics, study on its response and performance under osmotic forcing is lacking. Here, we measure the osmotic energy conversion for individual double-walled carbon nanotube with an inner radius of 2.3 nm. By fabricating a nanofluidic device using photolithography, we find a giant power density (up to 22.5 kW/m2) for the transport of KCl, NaCl, and LiCl solutions across the tube. Further experiments show that such an extraordinary performance originates from the ultrahigh slip lengths (up to a few micrometers). Our results suggest that carbon nanotube is a good candidate for not only ultrafast transport, but also osmotic power harvesting under salinity gradients.

Background Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the prevailing sarcomas of the gastrointestinal tract. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) therapy, exemplified by Imatinib mesylate (IM), constitutes the established adjuvant therapy for GISTs. Nevertheless, post-treatment resistance poses a challenge that all patients must confront. The presence of tumor heterogeneity and secondary mutation mechanisms fail to account for some instances of acquired drug resistance. Certain investigations suggest a strong association between tumor drug resistance and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) in the tumor microenvironment, but the underlying mechanism remains obscure. Scarce research has explored the connection between GIST drug resistance and the tumor microenvironment, as well as the corresponding mechanism. Methods Immunofluorescence and fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) methodologies were employed to detect the presence of MSC in GIST samples. The investigation encompassed the examination of MSC migration towards tumor tissue and the impact of MSC on the survival of GIST cells under IM treatment. Through ELISA, western blotting, and flow cytometry analyses, it was confirmed that Transforming Growth Factor Beta 2 (TGF-β2) triggers the activation of the PI3K-AKT pathway by MSC, thereby facilitating drug resistance in GIST. Results Our findings revealed a positive correlation between a high proportion of MSC and both GIST resistance and a poor prognosis. In vitro studies demonstrated the ability of MSC to migrate towards GIST. Additionally, MSC were observed to secrete TGF-β2, consequently activating the PI3K-AKT pathway and augmenting GIST resistance. Conclusions Our investigation has revealed that MSC within GISTs possess the capacity to augment drug resistance, thereby highlighting their novel mechanism and offering a promising target for intervention in GIST therapy.

Background: Maternal smoking during pregnancy may be associated with low birth weight (LBW) in offspring and global risk estimates have not been summarized previously. We aimed to systematically explore evidence regarding maternal smoking and the LBW risk in offspring globally and examine possible causes of heterogeneity across relevant studies. Methods: Comprehensive search of PubMed, Ovid Embase, Ovid Medline (R), and Web of science from inception until October 2021 was carried out. A random-effects meta-analysis was used to estimate the pooled odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). Restricted cubic spline analysis with four knots was used to further examine the dose-response relationship. Results: Literature searches yielded 4,940 articles, of which 53 met inclusion criteria (comprising 55 independent studies). Maternal smoking during pregnancy was significantly associated with the risk of LBW in offspring (OR=1.89 , 95% CI=1.80-1.98). Furthermore, an obvious dose–response relationship between the amount of cigarettes daily smoked in pregnancy and the risk of LBW in offspring was observed. The results of subgroup analyses indicated that the risk of maternal smoking on LBW was larger in more recently conducted studies (P = .020) and longer period of active smoking during pregnancy (P = .002). No evidence of publication bias was found. A photoelectrochemical sensing platform based on ligand-variable metal clusters charge transfer was established for the quantitative assay of ronidazole (RNZ) using Ce-porphyrin-metal-organic frameworks/silver nanowires (Ce-Por-MOFs/AgNWs). Rod-like Ce-Por-MOFs and well-dispersed sub-50 nm AgNWs were prepared using a hydrothermal method and polyol strategy, and then through simple drop coating to yield Ce-Por-MOFs/AgNWs nanocomposites. We investigated the intrinsic semiconducting properties of the composites. More importantly, it was found that the variable-valence metal node can provide electronic defect states similar to those caused by multi-metal doping, synergizing with the surface plasmon effect of AgNWs, which significantly improved the photoelectric conversion efficiency, thereby resulting in excellent optoelectronic properties. The H{\alpha} line is an important optical line in solar observations containing the information from the photosphere to the chromosphere. To study the mechanisms of solar eruptions and the plasma dynamics in the lower atmosphere, the Chinese H{\alpha} Solar Explorer (CHASE) was launched into a Sun-synchronous orbit on October 14, 2021. The scientific payload of the CHASE satellite is the H{\alpha} Imaging Spectrograph (HIS). The CHASE/HIS acquires, for the first time, seeing-free H{\alpha} spectroscopic observations with high spectral and temporal resolutions. It consists of two observational modes. The raster scanning mode provides full-Sun or region-of-interest spectra at H{\alpha} (6559.7-6565.9 {\AA}) and Fe I (6567.8-6570.6 {\AA}) wavebands. The continuum imaging mode obtains full-Sun photospheric images at around 6689 {\AA}. In this paper, we present detailed calibration procedures for the CHASE/HIS science data, including the dark-field and flat-field correction, slit image curvature correction, wavelength and intensity calibration, and coordinate transformation. Photocatalytic membranes have received increasing attention due to their excellent separation and photodegradation of organic contaminants in wastewater. Herein, we bound Ag-AgBr nanoparticles onto a synthesized polyacrylonitrile-ethanolamine (PAN-ETA) membrane with the aid of a chitosan (CS)-TiO2 layer via vacuum filtration and in-situ partial reduction. The introduction of the CS-TiO2 layer improved surface hydrophilicity and provided attachment sites for the Ag-AgBr nanoparticles. The PAN-ETA/CS-TiO2/Ag-AgBr photocatalytic membranes showed a relatively high water permeation flux (~ 47 L·m−2·h−1·bar−1) and dyes rejection (methyl orange: 88.22%; congo red: 95%; methyl blue: 97.41%; rose bengal: 99.98%). Additionally, the composite membranes exhibited potential long-term stability for dye/salt separation (dye rejection: ~97%; salt rejection: ~6.5%). Moreover, the methylene blue and rhodamine B solutions (20 mL, 10 mg · L−1) were degraded approximately 90.75% and 96.81% in batch mode via the synthesized photocatalytic membranes under visible light irradiation for 30 min. This study provides a feasible method for the combination of polymeric membranes and inorganic catalytic materials.

To evaluate retrospectively the feasibility and safety of simultaneous multiple microcoil localizations of multiple pulmonary nodules prior to video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). This retrospective cohort study enrolled 288 consecutive patients, who underwent computed tomography (CT)–guided microcoil localization and subsequent VATS at our academic hospital between July 2017 and June 2018. Of these patients, 36 with 79 pulmonary nodules undergoing simultaneous multiple microcoil localizations in the ipsilateral lung were designated the multiple localization group; the remaining 252 with 252 pulmonary nodules undergoing single microcoil localization were designated the single localization group. The main outcomes were the technical success and complication rates of the localization procedures. The Student t test and Mann-Whitney U test were used for continuous variables. The chi-squared test and logistic regression analysis were used to assess dichotomous variables. The localization technical success rates of the multiple and single localization groups were 96.2% (76/79) and 98.0% (247/252), respectively (p = 0.326). The rate of any complication (pneumothorax or pulmonary hemorrhage) was significantly higher in the multiple localization than in the single localization group (55.6% vs 21.8%, respectively; p < 0.001). The incidence of pneumothorax was significantly higher in the multiple localization than in the single localization group (p < 0.001). The difference between the incidence of pulmonary hemorrhage in the 2 groups was not significant (p = 0.385). Although preoperative CT-guided simultaneous microcoil localizations of multiple pulmonary nodules produced a significantly higher incidence of pneumothorax, the localizations were clinically feasible and safe. • Simultaneous preoperative CT-guided microcoil localizations of multiple pulmonary nodules are clinically feasible and safe. • Simultaneous microcoil localizations of multiple pulmonary nodules produced a significantly higher incidence of pneumothorax.

Two-dimensional membranes have attracted significant attention due to their superior characteristics, and their ability to boost both flux and selectivity have led to their reputation as potential next-generation separation membranes. Among them, emerging MXene-based membranes play significant roles in the competitive membrane-separation field. In this mini-review, we systematically discuss the assembly and separation mechanisms of these membranes. Moreover, we highlight strategies based on the crosslinking of MXene nanosheets and the construction of additional nanochannels that further enhance the permeabilities and anti-swelling properties of MXene-based membranes and meet the requirements of practical applications, such as gas-molecule sieving, ion sieving, and other small-molecule sieving. MXene nanosheets can also be used as additives that introduce specific functionalities into hybrid membranes. In addition, extended applications that use MXenes as scaffolds are also discussed.

Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) have attracted phenomenal attention because of their superior optoelectronic performances. The combination of their structural tunability and material stability offers an unprecedented opportunity to engineer materials with unique functionalities. However, developing a rapid and effective design method for introducing luminescence into dielectric switch and realizing controllable regulation has been an enormous challenge. Thus far, materials with tunable optoelectronic multichannel response have not been successfully implemented. In this study, we successfully developed a facile and effective mechanochemical method for realizing the integration and regulation of luminescence and dielectric switch in 2D perovskites, which is unprecedented for the design of dielectric switching materials. The mild external mechanical stimuli enabled the formation of Mn2+ ion-doped 2D hybrid perovskites (Cyclopropylammonium)2Pb1− x Mn x Br4 with excellent dielectric switch and rapidly controllable luminescence of highly efficient blue light, white light, pink light, and orange light. This work will provide a new perspective on the rapid and effective design of multifunctional materials and can inspire the future development of low-cost and high-efficiency electronics.

Fiber-reinforced polymer composite laminate is weak in the Z-direction, which limits its application. Herein, short carbon fiber (SCF) was decorated with graphene oxide (GO) to form GO@SCF, which was used to improve epoxy matrix and thereby the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of carbon fiber fabric (CFF)-reinforced epoxy composites. The effect of GO@SCF on the ILSS of the composite has been examined. It showed that the optimal content of GO@SCF was 0.1 wt%, and the maximum value of ILSS reached 59.4 MPa, which was 14.7% higher than the pure CFF/epoxy composite. The neat SCF was also employed to enhance the ILSS for the purpose of comparison. The results indicate that GO@SCF has better effect on reinforcing the ILSS than the neat SCF. This study provides an effective approach for the reinforcement of the ILSS of CFF-reinforced epoxy composites.

Optic-electric responsive materials have attracted much attention for their applications in temperature-sensing, actuators, and memory switches. However, it is a challenge to integrate various functions to form multifunctional responsive materials. As molecule-based hybrid materials usually consist of organic and inorganic components, the introduction of multiple functions can be achieved through structural construction. Thus far, even though full-temperature cover is required for device applications, full-temperature covered multi-switchable hybrid materials have rarely been successfully synthesized. Herein, the dynamic [(CH3)3NOH]+ cation and luminous center Mn(II) were introduced to form a hybrid material [(CH3)3NOH][MnCl3], showing multiple temperature-responsive behaviors. Upon temperature change, it exhibits multi-state dielectric switching response and intensity or peak shift response of luminous in full-temperature range (low, room, and high temperatures). These responsive behaviors are triggered by the motion or reorientation of [(CH3)3NOH]+ cations and inorganic framework. Overall, the switchable photoelectric material has potential applications in multiple encrypted storage and sensor devices.

To study the pharmacological mechanism of Guanxin II formula (冠心II号方) for treatment of coronary heart disease (CHD). A network pharmacology-based method was utilized. First candidate compounds, targets of GX II were collected using PharmMapper, BATMAN-TCM, DrugBank and SwissTargetPrediction, and targets on CHD were mined from GeneCards, DisGenet, DrugBank and GEO. Afterwards, the big hub compounds and targets were chosen in the candidate compounds-direct therapeutic targets on the CHD (C-T) network and the direct therapeutic targets on the CHD (T-D) network. Furthermore, the Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis were performed to identify the enriched terms. Finally, a molecular docking simulation strategy was adopted to verify the binding capacity between the big hub compounds and big hub targets on CHD. First, 114 candidate compounds were selected with the following criteria: OB⩾30%, DL⩾0.18, and HL ⩾4 h. Then, 1,035 targets of GX II were gathered, while 928 targets on CHD were collected. Afterwards, 196 common targets of compound targets and therapeutic targets on CHD were defined as direct therapeutic targets acting on CHD. In addition, the contribution index (CI) in the C-T network was calculated, and 4 centrality properties, including degree, betweenness, closeness and coreness, in the T-D network, 4 big hub compounds, and 6 big hub targets were eventually chosen. Furthermore, the GO and KEGG analysis indicated that GX II acted on CHD by regulating the reactive oxygen species metabolism, steroid metabolism, lipid metabolism, inflammatory response, proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. The docking results manifested excellent binding capacity between the 4 big hub compounds and 6 big hub targets on CHD. This network pharmacology-based exploration revealed that GX II might prevent and inhibit the primary pathological processes of CHD.

Background The interaction between programmed death receptor (PD-1) and its ligand (PD-L1) is essential for suppressing activated T-lymphocytes. However, the precise mechanisms underlying PD-L1 overexpression in tumours have yet to be fully elucidated. Here, we describe that RelB participates in the immune evasion of prostate cancer (PCa) via cis/trans transcriptional upregulation of PD-L1. Methods Based on transcriptome results, RelB was manipulated in multiple human and murine PCa cell lines. Activated CD4+ and CD8+ T cells were cocultured with PCa cells with different levels of RelB to examine the effect of tumourous RelB on T cell immunity. Male mice were injected with murine PCa cells to validate the effect of RelB on the PD-1/PD-L1-mediated immune checkpoint using both tumour growth and metastatic experimental models. Results PD-L1 is uniquely expressed at a high level in PCa with high constitutive RelB and correlates with the patients’ Gleason scores. Indeed, a high level of PD-L1 is associated with RelB nuclear translocation in AR-negative aggressive PCa cells. Conversely, the silencing of RelB in advanced PCa cells resulted in reduced PD-L1 expression and enhanced susceptibility of PCa cells to the T cell immune response in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, a proximal NF-κB enhancer element was identified in the core promoter region of the human CD274 gene, which is responsible for RelB-mediated PD-L1 transcriptional activation. This finding provides an informative insight into immune checkpoint blockade by administering RelB within the tumour microenvironment. Conclusion This study deciphers the molecular mechanism by which tumourous RelB contributes to immune evasion by inhibiting T cell immunity via the amplification of the PD-L1/PD-1-mediated immune checkpoint.

The rapid detection of insecticides such as parathion-methyl (PM) requires methods with high sensitivities and selectivities. Herein, a dual catalytic amplification strategy was developed using Fe3O4 nanozyme-supported carbon quantum dots and silver terephthalate metal–organic frameworks (Fe3O4/C-dots@Ag-MOFs) as current amplification elements. Based on this strategy, a novel electrochemical microfluidic paper-based chip was designed to detect PM. Fe3O4/C-dots@Ag-MOFs were synthesised by a hydrothermal method, and a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was then synthesised on the surface of Fe3O4/C-dots@Ag-MOFs using PM as a template molecule. Finally, the reaction zone of a chip was modified with MIP/Fe3O4/C-dots@Ag-MOFs. PM from a sample introduced into the reaction zone was captured by the MIP, which generated a reduction current response at − 0.53 V in a three-electrode system embedded in the chip. Simultaneous catalysis by Fe3O4/C-dots and Ag-MOFs significantly enhanced the signal. The chip had a detection limit of 1.16 × 10−11 mol L−1 and was successfully applied to the determination of PM in agricultural products and environmental samples with recovery rates ranging from 82.7 to 109%, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of less than 5.0%. This approach of combining a dual catalytic amplification strategy with an MIP significantly increased the sensitivity as well as selectivity of chips and can potentially be used to detect a wide variety of target analytes using microfluidic paper-based chips.

Immune dysregulation, specifically of inflammatory processes, has been linked to behavioral symptoms of depression in both human and rodent studies. Here, we evaluated the antidepressant effects of immunization with altered peptide ligands of myelin basic protein (MBP)-MBP87-99[A91, A96], MBP87-99[A91], and MBP87-99[R91, A96]-in different models of depression and examined the mechanism by which these peptides protect against stress-induced depression. We found that a single dose of subcutaneously administered MBP87-99[A91, A96] produced antidepressant-like effects by decreasing immobility in the forced swim test and by reducing the escape latency and escape failures in the learned helplessness paradigm. Moreover, immunization with MBP87-99[A91, A96] prevented and reversed depressive-like and anxiety-like behaviors that were induced by chronic unpredictable stress (CUS). However, MBP87-99[R91, A96] tended to aggravate CUS-induced anxiety-like behavior. Chronic stress increased the production of peripheral and central proinflammatory cytokines and induced the activation of microglia in the prelimbic cortex (PrL), which was blocked by MBP87-99[A91, A96]. Immunization with MBP-derived altered peptide ligands also rescued chronic stress-induced deficits in p11, phosphorylated cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element binding protein, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression. Moreover, microinjections of recombinant proinflammatory cytokines and the knockdown of p11 in the PrL blunted the antidepressant-like behavioral response to MBP87-99[A91, A96]. Altogether, these findings indicate that immunization with altered MBP peptide produces prolonged antidepressant-like effects in rats, and the behavioral response is mediated by inflammatory factors (particularly interleukin-6), and p11 signaling in the PrL. Immune-neural interactions may impact central nervous system function and alter an individual's response to stress.

To compare the efficacy and safety of localization of small pulmonary nodules with microcoil and hookwire prior to surgical resection. A total of 112 patients who underwent preoperative computed tomography (CT)-guided localization of small pulmonary nodules were enrolled in this single-center retrospective non-randomized cohort study between June 2016 and June 2017. Seventy-nine patients who underwent percutaneous localization with microcoils formed the microcoil group; the remaining 33 patients underwent percutaneous localization with hookwires (hookwire group). The primary outcomes were the success and complication rates of the procedure. Student’s t test was used for continuous variables, whereas chi-square analysis and logistic regression were used for dichotomous variables. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) was successfully performed in all cases, without conversion to thoracotomy. The localization success rate was 94.9% (75/79) in the microcoil group and 93.9% (31/33) in the hookwire group (p = 0.836). Hookwire group (p = 0.000) and nodule location of the lower lobe (p = 0.012) were associated with an increased incidence of pneumothorax. Hookwire group (p = 0.027) and decreased nodule diameter (p = 0.024) were associated with an increased incidence of moderate to severe chest pain, as well as an increased incidence of overall complications. Although the deployment of the microcoil was more complex and required more time than hookwire placement, microcoil localization was associated with fewer complications. • CT-guided percutaneous localization using a microcoil and that using a hookwire are equally effective for localizing small pulmonary nodules prior to resection with video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. • Lung nodule localization using a microcoil was associated with fewer complications than localization using a hookwire.
