Abstract

In this study, 38 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were developed and characterized in Patelloida pygmaea. The minor allele frequency raged from 0.0833 to 0.5000. The observed heterozygosity varied from 0.0000 to 1.000, and the expected heterozygosity varied from 0.1197 to 0.5496. Polymorphic information content ranged from 0.1103 to 0.4316. Abstract

In this study, 26 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were developed and characterized in Nipponacmea schrenckii. The minor allele frequency raged from 0.0238 to 0.3571. The observed heterozygosity and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.0000 to 0.2381 and from 0.0929 to 0.4866, respectively. Polymorphic information content ranged from 0.0866 to 0.3538. Abstract

Owing to their unique structural stability and impressive long-term cycling performance, coated hollow structures are highly attractive for energy storage systems, especially batteries. Many efforts have been devoted and various strategies have been proposed to prepare such materials. In the present work, we propose a self-templating thermolysis strategy, different from traditional wet processing methods, to fabricate cuprous sulfide hollow spheres coated with different shells, by exploiting the thermal decomposition properties of the core (CuS) and the protection provided by the shell. To demonstrate the generality of this synthetic approach, three different coating materials (carbon, TiO2, MoS2) have been chosen to prepare Cu2–xS@C, Cu2–xS@TiO2 and Cu2–xS@MoS2 hollow spheres. All synthesized composite materials were then assembled as electrodes and tested in lithium batteries, showing excellent cycling stability. In particular, the electrochemical properties of Cu2–xS@C were thoroughly investigated. The results of this work provide an alternative route to prepare coated metal sulfide hollow spheres for energy storage applications.

4. Efficient ethanol/water separation via functionalized nanoporous graphene membranes: insights from molecular dynamics study

Abstract

Systematic molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to study the separation of ethanol/water mixture through single-layer graphene with designed nanoscale pores. The effects of pore size, chemical functionalization, and applied pressure were investigated. It was found that the diameter of pore plays a key role for efficient separation of ethanol from water. With appropriate diameter, water molecules can pass through but flow of ethanol is essentially blocked. Compared to hydrophobic, hydrophilic functionalization is found to be more efficient for ethanol/water separation as energy barrier for water molecule is less than ethanol in case of hydrophilic porous graphene membrane. Overall, our results indicate that the flux through hydrophilic functionalized (P2_OH) graphene membrane is nearly four times higher than conventional reverse osmosis membranes with a good selectivity for ethanol/water separation. This simulation study provides molecular-level understanding of ethanol/water separation through functionalized nonporous graphene and reveals the key governing factors that are essential for designing novel graphene membranes for bioethanol purification.

Abstract

Photoanodes based on In2S3/ZnO heterojunction nanosheet arrays (NSAs) have been fabricated by atomic layer deposition of ZnO over In2S3 NSAs, which were in situ grown on fluorine-doped tin oxide glasses via a facile solvothermal process. The as-prepared photoanodes show dramatically enhanced performance for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, compared to single semiconductor counterparts. The optical and PEC properties of In2S3/ZnO NSAs have been optimized by modulating the thickness of the ZnO overlayer. After pairing with ZnO, the NSAs exhibit a broadened absorption range and an increased light absorptance over a wide wavelength region of 250–850 nm. The optimized sample of In2S3/ZnO-50 NSAs shows a photocurrent density of 1.642 mA cm−2 (1.5 V vs. RHE) and an incident photon-to-current efficiency of 27.64% at 380 nm (1.23 V vs. RHE), which are 70 and 116 times higher than those of the pristine In2S3 NSAs, respectively. A detailed energy band edge analysis reveals the type-II band alignment of the In2S3/ZnO heterojunction, which enables efficient separation and collection of photogenerated carriers, especially with the assistance of positive bias potential, and then results in the significantly increased PEC activity. 7. Corrosion and wear resistance of AZ91D magnesium alloy with and without microarc oxidation coating in Hank’s solution

Abstract

Immersion test, electrochemistry test and block-on-cylinder type wear test have been applied to study the corrosion and wear resistance of AZ91D Mg alloy with and without microarc oxidation (MAO) treatment in Hank’s solution. Through MAO, a ceramic coating is directly formed on the surface of AZ91D Mg alloy, by which its corrosion and wear resistances are greatly improved. The immersion test results show the mass loss of untreated AZ91D Mg is 15 times of that of MAO ones after 21 days immersion test. The electrochemical corrosion experiments show that the corrosion potential of Mg alloy is improved from −1.5786 V to −0.43019 V through MAO surface treatment, the corrosion current is reduced from 0.028703 A/cm2 to 2.0456 × 10−7 A/cm2, and the polarization resistance is improved from 1.2753 × 10−5 Ω/cm2 to 0.90886 Ω/cm2. The lubricate sliding wear test results show the mass loss of untreated AZ91D Mg is 1.5 times of that of MAO ones.
