Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is considered a non-invasive precursor to breast cancer, and although associated with an increased risk of developing invasive disease, many women with DCIS will never progress beyond their in situ diagnosis. The path from normal duct to invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) is not well understood, and efforts to do so are hampered by the substantial heterogeneity that exists between patients, and even within patients. Here we show gene expression analysis from > 2,000 individually micro-dissected ductal lesions representing 145 patients. Combining all samples into one continuous trajectory we show there is a progressive loss in basal layer integrity heading towards IDC, coupled with two epithelial to mesenchymal transitions, one early and a second coinciding with the convergence of DCIS and IDC expression profiles. We identify early processes and potential biomarkers, including CAMK2N1, MNX1, ADCY5, HOXC11 and ANKRD22, whose reduced expression is associated with the progression of DCIS to invasive breast cancer.

Traditional fluorinated carbon (CFx) batteries are greatly limited in their applications mostly because of inferior rate performances, initial voltage delay and low fluorine-to-carbon ratio below one. This work innovatively applies graphite nanosheets (NSs) as carbon source and optimizes the fluorination process at temperature range of 250–400 °C to prepare CFx NSs. Specifically, the edge defects and –CF2, –CF3 perfluorinated functional group active sites are introduced into NSs in the form of covalent/semi-covalent/semi-ionic bonds by adjusting the temperature which also breaks the limit of fluorocarbon ratio to achieve ultra-thin microstructure with high performances. In the battery assembly process, a series of discharge electrolytes are introduced to improve the quality and realize the ultrahigh specific capacity. The optimized CFx-400 °C NSs deliver an excellent specific capacity of 921 mAh·g−1 at a current density of 10 mA·g−1 with a high energy density value of 2210 Wh·kg−1. Moreover, the new electrolytes are selected which not only serve as electrolytes but also can be loaded on CFx surface for various discharge reactions without affecting the actual battery function. Thus, the lightweight tabs and current collectors are selected to control the loading of active material and injection coefficient. The presented battery design strategy provides a new strategy to achieve an ultrahigh specific energy density of 1116 Wh·kg−1.

The helical structures possess unique physical and chemical properties, such as superelasticity, high specific strength, chirality, and electromagnetic cross-polarization characteristics. With the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology, helical structures with various scales have been discovered or synthesized artificially. Among them, the helical carbon materials receive much attention around the world. Herein, we present a brief review of the development of helical carbon materials in terms of structures, synthesis techniques and mechanisms, and applications. The controllable designing of catalysts, carbon sources and reaction parameters plays a key role to optimize the properties of the helical carbon materials. At the same time, the applications in microwave absorption devices, sensors, catalysts, energy conversions and storage devices, and solar cell are also presented. For the good chemical and physical properties, helical carbon materials have a good application prospect in many fields. The potential issues and future opportunities of the helical carbon materials are also proposed.

To develop and validate a mathematical model for predicting intracranial pressure (ICP) noninvasively using phase-contrast cine MRI (PC-MRI). We performed a retrospective analysis of PC-MRI from patients with communicating hydrocephalus (n = 138). The patients were recruited from Shenzhen Second People’s Hospital between November 2017 and April 2020, and randomly allocated into training (n = 97) and independent validation (n = 41) groups. All participants underwent lumbar puncture and PC-MRI in order to evaluate ICP and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) parameters (i.e., aqueduct diameter and flow velocity), respectively. A novel ICP-predicting model was then developed based on the nonlinear relationships between the CSF parameters, using the Levenberg–Marquardt and general global optimisation methods. There was no significant difference in baseline demographic characteristics between the training and independent validation groups. The accuracy of the model for predicting ICP was 0.899 in the training cohort (n = 97) and 0.861 in the independent validation cohort (n = 41). We obtained an ICP-predicting model that showed excellent performance in the noninvasive diagnosis of clinically significant communicating hydrocephalus.

Developing highly efficient magnetic microwave absorbers (MAs) is crucial, and yet challenging for anti-corrosion properties in extremely humid and salt-induced foggy environments. Herein, a dual-oxide shell of ZnO/Al2O3 as a robust barrier to FeSiAl core is introduced to mitigate corrosion resistance. The FeSiAl@ZnO@Al2O3 layer by layer hybrid structure is realized with atomic-scale precision through the atomic layer deposition technique. Owing to the unique hybrid structure, the FeSiAl@ZnO@Al2O3 exhibits record-high microwave absorbing performance in low-frequency bands covering L and S bands with a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of -50.6 dB at 3.4 GHz. Compared with pure FeSiAl (RLmin of -13.5 dB, a bandwidth of 0.5 GHz), the RLmin value and effective bandwidth of this designed novel absorber increased up to ~ 3.7 and ~ 3 times, respectively. Furthermore, the inert ceramic dual-shells have improved 9.0 times the anti-corrosion property of FeSiAl core by multistage barriers towards corrosive medium and obstruction of the electric circuit. This is attributed to the large charge transfer resistance, increased impedance modulus |Z|0.01 Hz, and frequency time constant of FeSiAl@ZnO@Al2O3. The research demonstrates a promising platform toward the design of next-generation MAs with improved anti-corrosion properties.

The tensile strength measured by Brazilian test is termed the splitting tensile strength. The values of splitting tensile strength and corresponding strain may be affected by loading and/or strain rates used in the Brazilian test. In order to investigate the effects, several Brazilian tests with two-type loading modes were carried out. One is under a constant loading rate (BT-CLR), and the other is under a constant strain rate (BT-CSR). Lightly weathered sandstone and mudstone are selected as test materials. Experimental data indicate that, while the loading rate increases from 0.3 to 0.5 MPa/s, the splitting tensile strengths of sandstone and mudstone are increasing about 12.2% and 16.0%, respectively. With increasing the strain rate from 0.005 to 0.02 mm/s, the splitting tensile strengths of sandstone and mudstone increase about 9.3% and 12.8%, respectively. With increment of loading and/or strain rate, the critical strains of both sandstone and mudstone decrease. The effect degree, in percentage, on the mudstone is greater than one on the sandstone.

The cryptocurrency economy provides a comprehensive digital trace of human economic behavior: almost all cryptocurrency users’ activities are faithfully recorded in transactions on public blockchains. However, the user identifiers in the transaction records, i.e., blockchain addresses, are anonymous. That is, they cannot be associated with any real “off-chain” identify of actual users. Nonetheless, identifying the economic roles of the addresses from their past behaviors is still feasible. This paper analyzes Ethereum token transactions, characterizes key economic agents’ behavior from their transaction patterns, and explores their identifiability through interpretable machine learning models. Specifically, six types of most active economic agents are considered, including centralized cryptocurrency exchanges, decentralized exchanges, cryptocurrency wallets, token issuers, airdrop services, and gaming services. Transaction patterns such as trading volume, transaction tempo, and structural properties of transaction networks are defined for individual blockchain addresses. The results showed that cryptocurrency exchanges and online wallets have signature behavior patterns and hence can be accurately distinguished from other agents. Token issuers, airdrop services, and gaming services can sometimes be confused. Moreover, transaction networks’ features provide the richest information in the economic agent’s identification.

This study focuses on the effects of loading and unloading conditions on mechanical behaviors of a sandstone and mudstone. Two-type triaxial tests were carried out. One is the conventional triaxial test, in which the condition is an axial pressure controlled loading. The other is the unloading triaxial test, in which the condition is an axial pressure controlled preloading phase until reaching some 85% of estimated failure strength followed by a confining pressure controlled second loading phase until reaching failure strength. The experimental data indicate that the mechanical behaviors obtained from the unloading triaxial tests, such as the specimens’ failure surface, strain–stress curve, triaxial compressive strength, and triaxial shear strength, are different from ones obtained from the conventional triaxial tests. The failure surface observed in the conventional triaxial tests is a simple inclined slope, but, in the unloading triaxial tests, it is complex including two or more intersecting faces. The crest of deviatoric stress and corresponding axial strain obtained from the unloading triaxial tests are smaller. Some indexes to denote mechanical behaviors of rocks, such as triaxial compressive strength, angle of internal friction, and angle of shearing resistance, obtained from the unloading triaxial tests, are greater.

Lysyl oxidase (LOX) is frequently overexpressed in a variety of malignancies and involved in tumor invasion and metastasis. Furthermore, it has been shown that LOX is closely related to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In this study, we aimed to investigate the exact role of LOX and the correlation between LOX and VEGF in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The expression levels of LOX in HCC tissue and adjacent noncancerous tissue were evaluated by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemical analysis. The effect of LOX knockdown on cell proliferation, migration, and invasion was investigated in vitro. The role of LOX in the regulation of VEGF was further characterized in HCC cells that had been treated with transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β). Our study showed that LOX was up-regulated in HCC cell lines and tissue. HCC patients with elevated expression of LOX had relatively shorter disease-free survival and overall survival. Knockdown of LOX reduced the proliferation, migration, and invasion of HCC cells. Additionally, the expression level of LOX positively correlated with that of VEGF. After treatment with TGF-β, the levels of LOX and VEGF were both up-regulated in a dose-dependent manner. In the cells treated with siRNA of LOX, levels of VEGF and phosphorylated p38 were significantly decreased and could not be up-regulated by TGF-β. Inhibition of p38 MAPK signaling abrogated TGF-β-mediated up-regulation of VGEF but did not affect LOX expression. LOX appears to be a predictor of less favorable outcomes and may regulate the expression of VEGF via p38 MAPK signaling.

Cu nanocrystals are applied extensively in several fields, particularly in the microelectron, sensor, and catalysis. The catalytic behavior of Cu nanocrystals depends mainly on the structure and particle size. In this work, formation of high-purity Cu nanocrystals is studied using a common chemical vapor deposition precursor of cupric tartrate. This process is investigated through a combined experimental and computational approach. The decomposition kinetics is researched via differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis using Flynn-Wall-Ozawa, Kissinger, and Starink methods. The growth was found to be influenced by the factors of reaction temperature, protective gas, and time. And microstructural and thermal characterizations were performed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Decomposition of cupric tartrate at different temperatures was simulated by density functional theory calculations under the generalized gradient approximation. High crystalline Cu nanocrystals without floccules were obtained from thermal decomposition of cupric tartrate at 271°C for 8 h under Ar. This general approach paves a way to controllable synthesis of Cu nanocrystals with high purity.

Hydrophobic nano silica sol (HNSS) was incorporated into polyvinylmethylsiloxane to prepare reinforced high-temperature vulcanized (HTV) silicone rubber. HTV silicone rubber filled with 40 phr HNSS showed excellent mechanical and optical properties: the tensile strength reached 11.7 MPa and the optical transmittance was higher than 90%. Possible reasons for reinforcement and transparency were discussed on the basis of the bound rubber percentage, total crosslink density, and SEM analysis. Our work suggests that HNSS is effective for reinforcement of HTV silicone rubber to endow excellent mechanical and optical properties.

A systematic method to look for minima inSU(N) SUSY GUT models is developed. A supersymmetric GUT model coupled toN=1 supergravity is proposed. The degeneracy of different vacua is removed and supersymmetry is spontaneously broken.
