Abstract

Background Orthostatic state is maintained by harmonizing the spine, pelvis and lower extremities. In the past few decades, several studies have demonstrated the associations between spinal imbalance and generalized osteoarthritis. The compensatory mechanisms of pelvis translation and knee flexion, however, have not been fully assessed. Methods A total of 213 volunteers, over 40 years of age, were recruited. Radiological measurements were performed by EOS imaging system. Pelvic tilt (PT), pelvic incidence (PI), lumbar lordosis (LL), sagittal vertical axis (SVA), global tilt (GT), hip-knee-angle (HKA), knee flexion angle (KFA), lateral distal femoral angle (LDFA), and medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) were measured. On the basis of SRS-Schwab, the subjects were classified into decompensated group (PI-LL > 20°), compensated group(10° ≤ PI-LL ≤ 20°), and normal group (PI-LL Results Decompensated group showed larger pelvic parameters (PT) and low extremity parameters (LDFA, MPTA, HKA and KFA) than normal group (P P P = 0.058). Higher PI-LL values were observed in women (P Conclusions A correlation between sagittal spinal imbalance and knee joint angles was recognized. The progression of knee and low back pain was associated with the severity of sagittal spinal imbalance. Pelvic retroversion was considered to be the probable compensatory mechanism.

Abstract

Autophagy-lysosome system plays a variety of roles in human cancers. In addition to being implicated in metabolism, it is also involved in tumor immunity, remodeling the tumor microenvironment, vascular proliferation, and promoting tumor progression and metastasis. Transcriptional factor EB (TFEB) is a major regulator of the autophagy-lysosomal system. With the in-depth studies on TFEB, researchers have found that it promotes various cancer phenotypes by regulating the autophagolysosomal system, and even in an autophagy-independent way. In this review, we summarize the recent findings about TFEB in various types of cancer (melanoma, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, renal cell carcinoma, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer), and shed some light on the mechanisms by which it may serve as a potential target for cancer treatment.

Abstract

The most common cause for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is vascular compression at the nerve root, and microvascular decompression (MVD) has been proven to be an effective surgical approach for this disease. For some patients, TN is secondary to the intracranial space-occupying lesion, and tumor resection is usually recommended. However, it is not easy to determine proper treatments when craniotomy is infeasible. In this study, we aim to explore the clinical outcomes of percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) for secondary TN caused by cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors.From June 2016 to December 2019, 15 patients with TN caused by CPA tumors underwent PBC in Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital. The clinical features, surgical outcomes, and complications of these patients were analyzed retrospectively.Fourteen out of the 15 patients had immediate pain relief after successful PBC, while one showed occasional pain, without needing any medication. No patients had a relapse of facial pain within a mean follow-up of 32.5 months. As for surgical complications, 14 patients experienced facial numbness, and six had masseter muscle weakness. No patients experienced serious surgical morbidities.For the patients with TN caused by CPA tumors, PBC could be considered a useful technique, especially when craniotomy is infeasible.

Abstract

Precise mono-doping of metal atom into metal particles at a specific particle position (e.g., the central site) in a highly controllable manner is still a challenge. In this work, we develop a highly controllable strategy for exchanging a single Ag atom into the central gold site of Au13Ag12(PPh3)10Cl8 (Ph = phenyl) nanoclusters. Interestingly, a “pigeon-pair” cluster of {[Au13Ag12(PPh3)10Cl8]·[Au12Ag13(PPh3)10Cl8]}2+ is obtained and confirmed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis. The experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the single-metal-atom exchanging from [Au13Ag12(PPh3)10Cl8]+ to [Au12Ag13(PPh3)10Cl8]+ occurs at the central position through the side entry of the μ3-bridging Cl atoms. Finally, the effects on the electronic structure and properties caused by the single-atom exchange at the central site are shown by the enhancement of fluorescence and catalytic activity in the photocatalytic oxidation of ethanol.

Abstract

Femtosecond absorption spectroscopy of Photosystem I (PS I) complexes from the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 was carried out on three pairs of complementary amino acid substitutions located near the second pair of chlorophyll molecules Chl2A and Chl2B (also termed A-1A and A-1B). The absorption dynamics at delays of 0.1–500 ps were analyzed by decomposition into discrete decay-associated spectra and continuously distributed exponential components. The multi-exponential deconvolution of the absorption changes revealed that the electron transfer reactions in the PsaA-N600M, PsaA-N600H, and PsaA-N600L variants near the B-branch of cofactors are similar to those of the wild type, while the PsaB-N582M, PsaB-N582H, and PsaB-N582L variants near the A-branch of cofactors cause significant alterations of the photochemical processes, making them heterogeneous and poorly described by a discrete exponential kinetic model. A redistribution of the unpaired electron between the second and the third monomers Chl2A/Chl2B and Chl3A/Chl3B was identified in the time range of 9–20 ps, and the subsequent reduction of A1 was identified in the time range of 24–70 ps. In the PsaA-N600L and PsaB-N582H/L variants, the reduction of A1 occurred with a decreased quantum yield of charge separation. The decreased quantum yield correlates with a slowing of the phylloquinone A0 → A1 reduction, but not with the initial transient spectra measured at the shortest time delay. The results support a branch competition model, where the electron is sheared between Chl2A–Chl3A and Chl2B–Chl3B cofactors before its transfer to phylloquinone in either A1A or A1B sites.
