Chironomids are abundant insects in freshwater ecosystems and lay in still or slow-moving water. The walls of sedimentation tanks in drinking water treatment plants (DWTP) provide such laying habitat, which can lead to larval outbreaks in plant effluent. A small blind internal thread (SBIT) is used to firmly fasten some functional components to the cover of 3C electronic products. The small internal thread is made in a blind hole using a fluteless forming tap (FFT) that does not produce chips. However, the four geometric parameters (tool width (W), tooth root diameter (D2), front-end diameter (Df) and tooth angle (θ)) for the FFT affect the thread filling rate (f) and the minimum torque (T) for the tapping process. This study reports a Box-Behnken design (BBD) using DEFORM-3D (finite element model) and MINITAB (regression analysis) software to tap 7075-T6 aluminum alloy using a small FFT to achieve a repeatable thread filling rate and minimum torque. The experimental results show that the BBD accurately predicts and simulate the thread filling rate for tapping 7075-T6 aluminum alloy. The modelling software and the experimental design for this study can be used to optimize the design of tools that are used in industrial production.

The synthesis of ionic olefin linked three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) is greatly challenging given the hardness of the formation of stable carbon-carbon double bonds (–C = C–). Herein, we report a general strategy for designing porous positively charged sp2 carbon-linked 3D COFs through the Aldol condensation promoted by quaternization. The obtained 3D COFs, namely TFPM-PZI and TAPM-PZI, showed impressive chemical stability. Furthermore, the positively charged frameworks with regular porosity endow 3D ionic COFs with selective capture radioactive ReO4−/TcO4− and great removal efficiency in simulated Hanford waste. This research not only broadens the category of 3D COFs but also promotes the application of COFs as efficient functional materials.

Background Adequate sedation is essential for pediatric patients undergoing 3Tesla (T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Using propofol alone is associated with patient arousing and adverse airway events. This study aimed to assess esketamine vs dexmedetomidine adjunct to propofol sedation for pediatric 3 T MRI. Methods In this randomized, double-blind, controlled trial, 114 pediatric patients aged between 6 months and 8 years were randomly assigned, in a 1:1 ratio, to the esketamine–propofol group or the dexmedetomidine–propofol group. Sedation was provided with esketamine or dexmedetomidine in combination with propofol titration. The primary outcome was the total dose of propofol. Secondary outcomes included propofol infusion dose, adverse events, time to emergence from sedation, and time to discharge from recovery room. Results A total of 111 patients completed this study (56 in the esketamine–propofol group and 55 in the dexmedetomidine–propofol group). All MRI procedures were successfully performed under sedation. The total median (IQR) dose of propofol was significantly lower in the esketamine–propofol group (159.8 [121.7, 245.2] μg/kg/min) than that in the dexmedetomidine–propofol group (219.3 [188.6, 314.8] μg/kg/min) (difference in medians [95% CI] = − 66.9 [− 87.8 to − 43.0] μg/kg/min, P Conclusions Although both regimens provided effective sedation for pediatric 3 T MRI, the esketamine–propofol sedation reduced propofol requirement and facilitated recovery, without detection of increased adverse effects in the studied population. A stable QTL qSalt-A04-1 for salt tolerance in the cotton seed germination stage, and two candidate genes, GhGASA1 and GhADC2, that play negative roles by modulating the GA and PA signalling pathways, respectively, were identified. The successful transition of a seed into a seedling is a prerequisite for plant propagation and crop yield. Germination is a vulnerable stage in a plant’s life cycle that is strongly affected by environmental conditions, such as salinity. In this study, we identified a novel quantitative trait locus (QTL) qRGR-A04-1 associated with the relative germination rate (RGR) after salt stress treatment based on a high-density genetic map under phytotron and field conditions, with LOD values that ranged from 6.65 to 16.83 and 6.11–12.63% phenotypic variations in all five environmental tests. Two candidate genes with significantly differential expression between the two parents were finally identified through RNA-seq and qRT-PCR analyses. Further functional analyses showed that GhGASA1- and GhADC2-overexpression lines were more sensitive to salt stress than wild-type Arabidopsis based on the regulation of the transcript levels of gibberellic acid (GA)- and polyamine (PA)- related genes in GA and PA biosynthesis and the reduction in the accumulation of GA and PA, respectively, under salt stress. Virus-induced gene silencing analysis showed that TRV:GASA1 and TRV:ADC2 were more tolerant to salt stress than TRV:00 based on the increased expression of GA synthesis genes and decreased H2O2 content, respectively. Taken together, our results suggested that QTL qRGR-A04-1 and its two harboured genes, GhGASA1 and GhADC2, are promising candidates for salt tolerance improvement in cotton.

The decline of fossil fuels is fostering research on carbon–neutral fuels such as nuclear energy, yet uranium supply is limited by actual techniques of uranium extraction from seawater. In particular, biofouling by marine bacteria and adsorbent instability are major drawbacks. Here we synthesized a novel amidoxime-functionalized antibacterial covalent organic framework that displays high stability and inhibits more than 90% the growth of marine bacteria, thus resulting in an enhanced uranium recovery capacity of 6.64 mg/g. Meanwhile, due to its exceptional fluorescence properties, the adsorbent can also be applied to highly sensitive on-site and real-time monitoring of UO22+.

As a basalmost family of Vitaceae, Chinese wild Vitis species offer key insights into the demographic history of grapes. In this study, we obtained 10 complete chloroplast (cp) genomes from Chinese wild-growing Vitis species based on our whole genome re-sequencing data. These chloroplast genomes ranged from 160,838 to 232,020 bp in size and exhibited typical quadripartite structures. Comparative analyses revealed that inverted repeat (IR) regions are especially abundant and contribute to cp genome arrangements. Phylogenetic analysis of the whole Vitis cp genomes supported three clearly partitioned main origins, in keeping with their geographic distributions, among which East Asian species from China were found to be sister species with Eurasian Vitis species but exhibited significant divergence from the North American group. Two well-supported subgroups were observed within the Chinese wild-growing Vitis species. Among these species, Vitis piasezkii and Vitis betulifolia were closely related species, exhibiting a support rate of 100%. The molecular clock-based divergence time suggested that the earliest split subspecies was Vitis pseudoreticulata, which further indicated that the origin and initial gene pool are located in southern China (the habitat of V. pseudoreticulata is located in the region). Coincidentally, the divergence time was during the Pleistocene period (2.6-0.1 Ma). Due to glacial/interglacial temperature fluctuations, cold-adapted subspecies, e.g., Vitis amurensis, could re-colonize new habitats. Our results may help to elucidate the adaptive radiation of Chinese wild Vitis species in different environments.

Background Most stroke survivors have sustained upper limb impairment in their distal joints. An electromyography (EMG)-driven wrist/hand exoneuromusculoskeleton (WH-ENMS) was developed previously. The present study investigated the feasibility of a home-based self-help telerehabilitation program assisted by the aforementioned EMG-driven WH-ENMS and its rehabilitation effects after stroke. Methods Persons with chronic stroke (n = 11) were recruited in a single-group trial. The training progress, including the training frequency and duration, was telemonitored. The clinical outcomes were evaluated using the Fugl–Meyer Assessment (FMA), Action Research Arm Test (ARAT), Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT), Motor Functional Independence Measure (FIM), and Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS). Improvement in muscle coordination was investigated in terms of the EMG activation level and the Co-contraction Index (CI) of the target muscles, including the abductor pollicis brevis (APB), flexor carpi radialis-flexor digitorum (FCR-FD), extensor carpi ulnaris-extensor digitorum (ECU-ED), biceps brachii (BIC), and triceps brachii (TRI). The movement smoothness and compensatory trunk movement were evaluated in terms of the following two kinematic parameters: number of movement units (NMUs) and maximal trunk displacement (MTD). The above evaluations were conducted before and after the training. Results All of the participants completed the home-based program with an intensity of 63.0 ± 1.90 (mean ± SD) min/session and 3.73 ± 0.75 (mean ± SD) sessions/week.
