One of the most prominent changes in the rhizospheric soil structure is associated with the formation of a strongly bound soil layer in the surroundings of the root, which is named rhizosheath. In this study, we investigated how root hair elongation, a ubiquitous root morphological trait, affect the stability of rhizosheath aggregates. Using 13CO2 pulse labeling, we tracked the fate of root-derived 13C inputted into the rhizosheath of two Zea mays L. genotypes with contrasting root hair elongation: a mutant with root hair defective elongation (rth3) and a corresponding wild type (WT). In addition, we also investigated the differences between two 13CO2 labeling approaches (single vs. multiple pulse labeling) in the distribution of 13C in the rhizosheath aggregates. We were able to demonstrate that the rhizosheath aggregate stability and the resulting aggregate size distribution follows the same mechanisms irrespective of the root hair elongation. This result reinforces the assumption that other soil properties are more decisive for the soil structure formation in the rhizosheath in comparison to root hair elongation. The majority of recently deposited root-derived C (57%) was found in the macroaggregates. Increasing the number of pulses (multiple pulse labeling approach) resulted in a higher 13C enrichment of the rhizosheath aggregates fractions in comparison to the application of a single pulse. While both labeling approaches resulted in a similar distribution of 13C in the rhizosheath aggregates, the higher enrichment given by multiple pulse labeling allowed the separation of significant differences between the genotypes in plant C allocation in the rhizosheath.

Eclogites from the Roberts Victor mine, Kaapvaal craton are classic examples of subducted Achaean oceanic crust brought up as xenoliths by kimberlite. New in situ trace element and oxygen isotope data (δ18O=3.09–6.99‰ SMOW) presented here reemphasise their origin from seawater-altered plagioclase-rich precursors. Their Hf–Nd isotopic compositions are not in agreement with compositions predicted by geochemical modelling of the isotopic composition of aged subducted oceanic crust. Instead, Hf isotopic compositions are very heterogeneous, varying between 0.281625 and 0.355077 (−37.8 and +2561 ɛHf) at the time of kimberlite emplacement (128 Ma) in keeping with equally variable Nd isotopic compositions (0.511124–0.545092; −26.3 to +636 ɛNd). However, most samples plot on the terrestrial array. The isotopic compositions of some samples are too extreme to play a major role in mixed peridotite-eclogite melting in basalt source regions, whereas the isotopic composition of other samples is reconcilable with a contribution of up to ca. 15% of eclogite partial melt to the MORB source. Most importantly, our results show that ancient subducted oceanic crust is not isotopically homogeneous and should not be treated as a “component” or “reservoir” during geochemical modelling. The heterogeneity reflects radiogenic in-growth starting from small compositional heterogeneities in gabbroic protoliths, followed by modification during sea-floor alteration, subduction and emplacement into the subcratonic lithosphere.

Hf, Zr and Ti in carbonatites primarily reside in their non-carbonate fraction while the carbonate fraction dominates the Nd and Sr elemental budget of the whole rock. A detailed investigation of the Hf, Nd and Sr isotopic compositions shows frequent isotopic disequilibrium between the carbonate and non-carbonate fractions. We suggest that the trace element and isotopic composition of the carbonate fraction better represents that of the carbonatite magma, which in turn better reflects the composition of the carbonatitic source. Experimental partitioning data between carbonatite melt and peridotitic mineralogy suggest that the Lu/Hf ratio of the carbonatite source will be equal to or greater than the Lu/Hf ratio of the carbonatite. This, combined with the Hf isotope systematics of carbonatites, suggests that, if carbonatites are primary mantle melts, then their sources must be short-lived features in the mantle (maximum age of 10–30 Ma), otherwise they would develop extremely radiogenic Hf compositions. Alternatively, if carbonatites are products of extreme crystal fractionation or liquid immiscibility then the lack of radiogenic initial Hf isotope compositions also suggests that their sources do not have long-lived Hf depletions. We present a model in which the carbonatite source is created in the sublithospheric mantle by the crystallization of earlier carbonatitic melts from a mantle plume. This new source melts shortly after its formation by the excess heat provided by the approaching hotter center of the plume and/or the subsequent ascending silicate melts. This model explains the HIMU-EMI isotope characteristics of the East African carbonatites, their high LREE/HREE ratios as well as the rarity of carbonatites in the oceanic lithosphere.

Surface waters in the Florida Everglades contain high levels ofdissolved organic carbon (DOC) compounds. δ13C values of DOCsamples collected from the northern Everglades indicate that less than about23%of the DOC was derived from sugarcane (the dominant agricultural crop in thearea), and the amount of DOC from sugarcane was greater during the dry period.Most of the DOC (> 50%) in the northern Everglades was in the low molecularweight ( modern” toabout 2400 years B.P., indicating that DOC was derived from both historic peatdeposits and modern vegetation. At each site, the HMW-DOC had older radiocarbonages than the LMW-DOC, and therefore contained a greater fraction of DOCderivedfrom the historic peat deposits. It appears that at least some of the old DOCcompounds from the historic peat deposits were decomposed during theirresidencein the surface water system in the northern Everglades, and the LMW-DOC wasmoremicrobially labile than the HMW-DOC. Our analysis suggests that accelerateddecomposition of organic matter in the historic peat deposits (due to land-usechange) could be a significant source of DOC and nutrients in the northernEverglades. Our data also suggest that the radiocarbon signature of DOC couldbeused as a sensitive indicator of the overall effectiveness of a wetlandrestoration project.

MID-OCEAN-RIDGE basalts (MORBs) are thought to result from melting in the mantle at depths of less than 60 km, in the spinel stability field1–3. MORBs have 176Hf/177Hf ratios indicating derivation from a mantle reservoir with a long-term Lu/Hf ratio greater than that of Cl chondrite meteorites, yet the measured Lu/Hf ratios in MORB are lower than in Cl chondrites: this is the 'hafnium paradox'4. Here we show that the Lu–Hf and Sm–Nd systematics of MORBs require garnet to be a residual phase in MORB melt genesis. This places the onset of melting beneath a mid-ocean ridge at depths greater than 80 km. A sequential melting model, in which melting starts in the garnet stability field and then continues at shallower levels, best explains the combined Nd and Hf isotope systematics, and is compatible with our present geophysical and geochemical knowledge of mid-ocean-ridge magmatism.
