Wood combustion is a major part of the current efforts to reduce CO2 emissions. However, wood combustion leads to emissions of other pollutants like fine particulate matter. A new option to reduce particulate matter emissions is a metal mesh filter with counter current flushing. An automatic prototype was tested under realistic conditions including starts and stops of the boiler. For regeneration, the filter was flushed using water in opposite flow direction. The water was recycled multiple times to limit water consumption. The results are very promising. Regeneration was successful and no signs of decay could be observed over 419.5 h of operation and 234 regenerations. The filter can be operated during all phases of boiler operation, which is a major step forward compared to alternative secondary measures. Separation efficiency was high with 80–86%, even though the filter showed internal leakage, which reduced the separation efficiency. Additionally, waste products were examined. About 1000 l wastewater can be expected to be produced every month, which could be disposed using the communal waste water system, given the low heavy metal loading. A part of the fine particulate matter is unsoluble and has to be removed from the regeneration water before reuse. The unsoluble fraction contains the majority of heavy metals and has to be disposed as fly ash or used for urban mining. Generally spoken, the metal mesh filter is a new, promising option which can overcome limitations of current secondary measures without increasing costs given its simple and robust construction.

The air quality in urban areas is on the one hand determined by the intensity of emissions. On the other hand atmospheric dispersion and chemical transformation conditions as well as topographic location have great influence on the ambient air concentrations. Within, this study the correlation between pollutant concentrations and the dynamics of atmospheric barrier and mixing layers has been experimentally investigated by tethered balloon soundings.The most important barrier layer is the surface inversion. During clear sky it develops in the late afternoon and is dissolved by warm air from the heated ground in the morning. Emitted pollutants are kept beneath this inversion. But, at the same time, the component ozone is depleted below and stored above the layer within the so called `ozone reservoir layer'. During night elevated mountain sites are decoupled from the ground conditions and stay within this reservoir without a remarkable nocturnal decrease of ozone concentration. The regularly observed ground level ozone increase in the morning hours is firstly caused by down mixing from the reservoir. The conditions and dynamics are illustratively depicted by vertical profiles of the different components and diagrams of temperature and concentration isopleths over the height and the experiment time lasting over five days.

Using 50 fs ( ∼ 2×1018 W/cm2) and 2 ps ( ∼ 5×1016 W/cm2) pulses from a Ti:Sa multi-TW laser at 800 nm wavelength large Xe-clusters ( 105...106 atoms per cluster) have been excited. Absolute yield measurements of EUV-emission in a wavelength range between 10 nm and 15 nm in combination with cluster target variation were carried out. The ps-laser pulse has resulted in about 30% enhanced and spatially more uniform EUV-emission compared to fs-laser excitation. Circularly polarized laser light instead of linear polarization results in enhanced emission which is probably caused by electrons gaining higher energies by the polarization dependent optical field ionization process. An absolute emission efficiency at 13.4 nm of up to 0.8% in 2π sr and 2.2% bandwidth has been obtained.

Si–N–(O) fibres were grown according to a high temperature vapour–solid process involving the reaction between SiO and NH3 on a substrate. The oxygen concentration of the fibres is related to the partial pressures of SiO and NH3 during fibre growth, depending respectively, on the processing temperature and the ammonia flow rate. The fibres consist of amorphous silicon oxynitride of composition Si02xN4(1−x)/3 (0.1 < x < 0.2). They exhibit a large spread in tensile strength. The lowest values (about 1 GPa) correspond to large surface defects caused by intergrowth while the highest values reach 5 GPa for perfect fibres. The fibres are stable in nitrogen up to 1450 °C (10 h) in terms of composition, structure and mechanical behaviour owing to their high processing temperature (1450 °C) and the nitrogen pressure preventing decomposition. A superficial crystallization into Si3N4 is only observed at 1500 °C inducing a moderate decrease of strength. In argon, decomposition starts at 1400 °C yielding gaseous species (SiO and N2), crystalline Si3N4 and free silicon beyond 1400 °C and induce a catastrophic drop of strength. Annealing in oxygen results in a growth of a protective SiO2 scale, amorphous or partially crystalline at 1400 °C.

The synthesis of silicon nitride powder by the reaction between silica, carbon and nitrogen is the economically most interesting route. Only this route makes possible the use of very cheap raw materials as well as the use of a simple production process. On the other side, the properties of the powders are within the limit of the technical requirements of the ceramic part manufacturer. The aim of this paper is to show that an optimized carbothermal Si3N4 powder synthesis leads to a product which fulfills the economical (low price) as well as the technical requirements. After a short introduction regarding the economical requirements, an overview of the carbothermal synthesis will be given. The influence of raw material, conditions of synthesis and removal of excess carbon on the powder properties will be discussed. Also, the properties of the powder as well as the sintering behaviour of Si3Ns4 powders, produced by Si-direct nitridation, Si-diimide process and the carbothermal route, will be compared in detail.
