We develop a pure characteristics equilibrium sorting model to recover estimates of willingness to pay (WTP) for both marginal and non-marginal changes in urban noise exposure. Using data from Vienna, Austria, we provide several new insights in the urban noise literature. First, we demonstrate the importance of considering general equilibrium feedback effects following large changes in noise levels. We document impacts to residents in policy targeted and non-targeted locations due to changes in both noise and equilibrium prices. Second, we confirm evidence of the importance of noise thresholds with significant and increasing negative impacts associated with increases in area covered by high levels of noise at 50 dB and 60 dB thresholds, respectively. Finally, we use an equilibrium sorting model to predict new price patterns and welfare implications following hypothetical policy changes that alter the distribution and intensity of nighttime noise in Vienna and are relevant to other urban settings seeking to reduce noise levels. Our work additionally provides a roadmap for conducting similar equilibrium sorting work in data limited settings outside the U.S.

From January 1987 until July 1999 we admitted 1003 patients with colorectal cancer and 31 with resected colorectal liver metastases to our tumor follow-up program. After R0 resection of the primary tumor 60 patients developed liver metastases during the postoperative follow-up. R0 resection of the metastases was performed in 16 of these cases without lethality and low morbidity. In the further course of the follow-up 8 of these patients again developed liver metastases, two of whom underwent reoperation. The overall 5-year survival rate after R0 resection of liver metastases was 20%. In 726 patients we performed 3719 follow-up examinations. Following the German regulations on physicians' fees for follow-up-examinations we calculated the cost of detecting a liver metastasis to be DM 16,500 per patient. Mean costs were DM 62,000 in patients in whom the metastases were successfully resected. The results of this study show that although the costs are very high for patients who benefit from the follow-up program, 26.7% of those with liver metastases are detected in such an early stage, and that an R0 resection can be performed. This study shows that the high costs of tumor follow-up programs for detecting liver metastases in patients with resected colorectal cancer can be justified by the good outcome of patients in whom an early diagnosis of recurrent disease is made.

Von 12/80–1/85 wurden von 133 eingewiesenen Oesophaguscarcinomen 119 (89,5%) operiert; 105mal wurde reseziert (79%), 14mal wurde ein substernaler Bypass angelegt. (Durchschnittsalter: 60 Jahre). 24% der Tumoren befanden sich im Stadium I und II (UICC), 76% im Stadium III und IV. Der Oesophagus wurde 7mal total (mit Kehlkopf) und 98mal subtotal reseziert. 98mal wurde der Magen und 7mal das Colon als Ersatzorgan verwandt; bei den 14 Bypass-Operationen 12mal der Magen und 2mal das Jejunum. Die Operationsletalitat betrug 17,6% (alle OPs) und 16,2% (Resektionen). Bedingt durch den hohen Anteil (76%) an den Stadien III und IV lag die 2-Jahres-Uberlebensrate bei 15%.

Eine Mikromethode zur spezifischen Bestimmung von Triglycerid, Diglycerid oder Monoglycerid wurde beschrieben. Nach Extraktion der Gesamtlipide wird eine vollstandige Trennung an Kieselgelplatten erreicht. Das Lipid wird mit der enzymatischen Glycerinbestimmung quantitativ erfast.

Ein 50jahriger Mann wurde nach einem Herzinfarkt mit Marcumar® behandelt. 2 Jahre spater erfolgte die Noteinweisung des Patienten wegen eines akuten Mediastinalsyndroms (Atemnot, Stridor, Einflusstauung, Heiserkeit, Unruhezustand) unter der Verdachtsdiagnose eines schnell gewachsenen Mediastinaltumors. Nach kombinierter medikamentoser und radiologischer Behandlung (Kobalt 60) bildete sich das bedrohliche Krankheitsbild zuruck. Die Mediastinoskopie zur Sicherung der Diagnose ergab eine retrosternal und retrotracheal gelegene Struma, die in gleicher Sitzung reseziert wurde. Es handelte sich um eine Blutcyste innerhalb einer Struma colloides nodosa, die sich vermutlich unter der Antikoagulantienbehandlung akut entwickelt hatte.
