However, the mechanisms by which Parkin connects mitochondrial homeostasis with cellular metabolism in adipose tissue remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that Park2 gene (encodes Parkin) deletion specifically from adipose tissue protects mice against high-fat diet and aging-induced obesity. Despite a mild reduction in mitophagy, mitochondrial DNA content and mitochondrial function are increased in Park2 deficient white adipocytes. Moreover, Park2 gene deletion elevates mitochondrial biogenesis by increasing Pgc1α protein stability through mitochondrial superoxide-activated NAD(P)H quinone dehydrogenase 1 (Nqo1). Both in vitro and in vivo studies show that Nqo1 overexpression elevates Pgc1α protein level and mitochondrial DNA content and enhances mitochondrial activity in mouse and human adipocytes. Taken together, our findings indicate that Parkin regulates mitochondrial homeostasis by balancing mitophagy and Pgc1α-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis in white adipocytes, suggesting a potential therapeutic target in adipocytes to combat obesity and obesity-associated disorders.

Talent of the practitioner is irrelevant if the person receiving support (or the person responsible for delivering support) does not follow through with the plan. This is true in applied behavior analysis (ABA), medicine, and allied health-care services. The cost of nonadherence and related nonoptimized interventions is a major contributor to the overall cost of health care, estimated at $290–528 billion annually in the United States (New England Healthcare Institute, 2009; Watanabe, McInnis, & Hirsch, 2018). Although a topic of research in medicine for over 60 years, no gold standard for the enhancement of adherence has been demonstrated in any single population, disease condition, or therapeutic approach (Nieuwlaat et al., 2014; Rudd, 1979). Given the broad applicability of behavior analysis as a framework for understanding human behavior, and the need to recognize and address the problem of nonadherence in ABA (Allen & Warzak, 2000) we propose a systematic behavioral model for adherence and the development of strategies to enhance follow-through with individualized support plans.

Background Nyssorhynchus darlingi (also known as Anopheles darlingi) is the primary malaria vector in the Amazon River Basin. In Brazil, analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously detected three major population clusters, and a common garden experiment in a laboratory setting revealed significant population variation in life history traits. Increasing temperatures and local level variation can affect life history traits, i.e. adult longevity, that alter vectorial capacity with implications for malaria transmission in Ny. darlingi. Methods We investigated the population structure of Ny. darlingi from 7 localities across Brazil utilizing SNPs and compared them to a comprehensive Ny. darlingi catalog. To test the effects of local level variation on life history traits, we reared F1 progeny from the 7 localities at three constant temperatures (20, 24 and 28 °C), measuring key life history traits (larval development, food-starved adult lifespan, adult size and daily survival). Results Using nextRAD genotyping-by-sequencing, 93 of the field-collected Ny. darlingi were genotyped at 33,759 loci. Results revealed three populations (K = 3), congruent with major biomes (Amazonia, Cerrado and Mata Atlântica), with greater FST values between biomes than within. In the life history experiments, increasing temperature reduced larval development time, adult lifespan, and wing length in all localities. The variation of family responses for all traits within four localities of the Amazonia biome was significant (ANOVA, P Conclusions SNP analysis of several Brazilian localities provided results in support of a previous study wherein populations of Ny. darlingi were clustered by three major Brazilian biomes. Our laboratory results of temperature effects demonstrated that population variation in life history traits of Ny. darlingi exists at the local level, supporting previous research demonstrating the high plasticity of this species. Understanding this plasticity and inherent variation between families of Ny. darlingi at the local level should be considered when deploying intervention strategies and may improve the likelihood of successful malaria elimination in South America.

Aims We hypothesized that in seasonally-arid systems the evolution of annuality is controlled by both moisture regime and substrate quality, with infertile soils either precluding annuality or selecting for improved nutrient acquisition in annuals. The grass flora of the Cape Floristic Region to test these ideas.

Modifications to a Canadian police caution on the right to silence were made in an attempt to increase its comprehensibility. University participants were asked to imagine themselves in an arrest and interrogation situation in which they were either innocent or guilty. It was hypothesized that participants who received the modified caution would score significantly higher on measures of comprehension than those who received the standard caution. Results indicated that comprehension was significantly higher among those that received the modified caution and that those with higher comprehension scores were more likely to exercise their right to silence. These findings suggest that clarifying and standardizing how a detainee’s rights are communicated will lead to better comprehension and greater protection against false or coerced confessions.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is an umbrella term that describes a range of neuropsychological and behavioral deficits resulting from prenatal exposure to alcohol. The dysfunctions that emerge from alcohol exposure during gestation are irreversible and, largely preventable. As such, there is an imperative need to understand the underlying features of the disorder in order to inform preventative measures, early diagnosis, and treatment. This paper provides a comprehensive review of literature investigating the neuropsychological, behavioral, and neurobiological features of FASD. Research on treatment and interventions for FASD is appraised in terms of its limitations and recommendations for future research are proposed.

Integrating population and community ecology can improve our understanding of the impacts of natural disturbances. Fire-stimulated flowering occurs in many long-lived herbaceous species of fire-maintained grasslands and savannas. Coexistence of these long-lived species may be affected in part by interspecific differences in the effect of fire-stimulated flowering on resource conservation, clonal growth, and longevity. This study comprised two parts. The first part investigated the effectiveness of different fire-related cues on fire-stimulated flowering in two cooccurring dominant grass species in a wet longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) savanna in southeastern Mississippi, USA. The second part investigated the immediate effects of the most important of these cues (damage and removal of aboveground vegetation and surface litter in May) along with nutrient addition on several measures of fitness and abundance over 6 years. Despite being a very effective inductive cue, when repeated frequently over 6 years, clipping plus surface litter removal significantly reduced flowering in both species. This negative effect was reduced to some extent by nutrient addition in Muhlenbergia expansa (which exhibited higher reproductive investment following clipping and fire than did Ctenium aromaticum). Frequent clipping resulted in an increasing numerical advantage of C. aromaticum over M. expansa with time. There was evidence of a modest release of C. aromaticum from competition with M. expansa in response to annual clipping. Responses suggest that suppressing flowering until after fire reduces the cost of flowering and maintains shoot densities, at least in M. expansa. Differences in the responses of these two species to repeated clipping and nutrient addition suggest that, despite their both exhibiting fire-stimulated flowering, each species is favored by slightly different fire frequencies. Moderate variation in fire frequency could maintain their coexistence in the long term.

Psychological maltreatment, including verbal aggression, has been implicated as an important contributor to children's behavioral problems. The present study looked specifically at the relationship between different forms of maternal verbal aggression and their association with children's adjustment. Mothers from Violent and Nonviolent families were compared on their use of various verbal aggression tactics, as measured by the Conflict Tactics Scale (Straus, 1979). Mothers from both groups used threats and insults with comparable frequency. In both groups, insults were predictive of children's adjustment. The relationship was particularly striking in children from violent homes. We conclude that chronic exposure to inter-parental violence may render children emotionally susceptible to maternal disparagement.

A case of multifocal giant cell tumor in a skeletally immature male with documented metachronous disease of the lower limb is described followed by a review of the literature including treatment options and their outcomes.

Family aggression patterns and behavior problems of children, aged 6-12, recruited from shelters for battered women (shelter group) were contrasted with three comparison groups of currently nonviolent families: two-parent, single-mother, and homeless. Girls who had been exposed to recent interparental wife abuse were predicted to show more internalizing and externalizing behavior problems than similarly exposed boys, based on recent literature. Homeless and shelter mothers reported the highest rates of parent-child aggression. Shelter girls obtained significantly higher total, internalizing and externalizing behavior problem ratings than shelter boys, and than two-parent and single-mother girls. Shelter boys obtained significantly higher internalizing ratings than two-parent boys. Shelter and homeless children were rated as having equivalent levels of behaviour problems. Across all groups, mothers' psychological adjustment was a better predictor of daughters' adjustment than that of sons. The study concluded that the assumption that preadolescent girls have greater immunity to psychosocial risk is unfounded.

Spin echo T1- and T2-weighted images and intravenously administered gadopentetate dimeglumine-enhanced T1-weighted images were obtained in 4 normal volunteers and 11 patients (11 joints) with painful, intermittent, or persistent joint swelling of unknown etiology. These studies were retrospectively reviewed to assess the benefits of contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in evaluating the synovium. Normal synovium and joint fluid showed no visually apparent enhancement on images obtained immediately after intravenous injection of gadopentetate dimeglumine. Abnormal synovium enhanced significantly, allowing the precise identification of equivocal or unsuspected synovial disease processes. These results suggest that, in selected cases, enhanced MRI can be a useful adjunct in the evaluation of suspected synovial disease processes.

We describe two patients with cyst-like lesions of bone that developed at sites of healed or healing fractures. One case showed histological features of a unicameral bone cyst, which, to the best of our knowledge, is a previously unreported finding in a post-traumatic cyst. It is suggested that there are two principal clinical and radiological types of post-traumatic cyst, of which each of our cases represents an example: (1) asymptomatic transient cortical lesions, found only in children, and (2) more central expanding lesions, found in a wider age group and associated with pain, swelling, and pathological fractures.

Gas lucency within intervertebral disc spaces, the vertebral vacuum phenomenon (VVP) was visible radiographically in 12/42 (28%) women with adenocarcinoma of the breast metastatic to bone. In 7/12 (17%) the VVP occurred adjacent to vertebra involved with metastatic tumor and free of significant degenerative changes. Vertebral collapse occurred in all seven women, but was minimal in some when the VVP was prominent. Metastatic malignancy should be considered along with degenerative disease when the VVP is observed.
