Photophysical and spectroscopic properties of a fluorescent analogue, 2-(5-selenocyanato-pentyl)-6-chlorobenzo- [de]isoquinoline-1,3-dione (NP) in different solvents has been described in this paper using steady-state, time resolved spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Stoke's shifted emission band in different solvents clearly demonstrate the highly polar character of the excited state, which is also supported by the enhancement of dipole moment of the molecule upon photoexcitation. Spectroscopic studies and multiple linear regression analysis method reveal that the solvatochromic behavior of the probe depends not only on the polarity of the medium but also on the hydrogen bonding interaction with the solvents. When the solvent effect was taken into account, the computed results show encouraging agreement with known experimental data. This article reveals the excellent correlation between the predicted and experimental spectral data of 1,8-naphthalimide derivative, providing a useful tool in the design of new fluorogenic probes having potential therapeutic activity.

Bulk and interfacial properties of ion-pair amphiphiles (IPA), formed between sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and n-alkyltrimethylammonium bromide homologues (C n TAB; n = 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18), have been investigated. Different phases and aggregated states, formed in the ternary combinations of CnTAB/SDS/H2O, have been identified and described. Equimolar mixture of IPAs in water yielded precipitates, in the form of coacervates. Aqueous solubility of isolated coacervates in presence and absence of additives like cholesterol and bile salts have been examined. The isolated coacervates have been characterized by 1H NMR, FTIR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarization microscopic measurements. The coacervates have appeared in the shape of needle and complex flower-like aggregates. Surface pressure (π)-area (A) isotherm of the coacervates at the air/water interface have been constructed and compared with the lipid 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC). Morphologies of the IPA monolayers at different surface pressures have been also examined by epifluorescence microscopy. The compressed interfacial monolayers have produced spherical (both regular and irregular) and fern-leaf like domains.

Selective quenching of luminescence of quantum dots (QDs) by Cu2+ ions vis-à-vis other physiologically relevant cations has been reexamined. In view of the contradiction regarding the mechanism, we have attempted to show why Cu2+ ions quench QD-luminescence by taking CdS and CdTe QDs with varying surface groups. A detailed study of the solvent effect and also size dependence on the observed luminescence has been carried out. For a 13% decrease in particle diameter (4.3 nm --3.7 nm), the quenching constant increased by a factor of 20. It is established that instead of surface ligands of QDs, conduction band potential of the core facilitates the photo-induced reduction of Cu (II) to Cu (I) thereby quenching the photoluminescence. Taking the advantage of biocompatibility of dendrimer and its high affinity towards Cu2+ ions, we have followed interaction of Cu2+-PAMAM and also dendrimer with the CdTe QDs. Nanomolar concentration of PAMAM dendrimer was found to quench the luminescence of CdTe QDs. In contrast, Cu2+-PAMAM enhanced the fluorescence of CdTe QDs and the effect has been attributed to the binding of Cu2+-PAMAM complex to the CdTe particle surface. The linear portion of the enhancement plot due to Cu2+-PAMAM can be used for determination of Cu2+ ions with detection limit of 70 nM.

The mixed micelles of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) with Brij35 and Brij 97 were studied separately by fluorescence measurement using pyrene as fluorescent probe. In the range of 0–1.0 mole fraction (X) of added SDS to Brij solutions, the cmc value of the mixed micelles varies from 0.085 to 8 mmol with Brij 35 and 0.04 to 8 mmol with Brij 97. The aggregation number also changes. A measure of the stability of mixed micelles is also presented. The interaction parameter β12 and the chain–chain contribution parameter (B1) are extracted from the analysis of the results. This parameter B1 is related to the standard free energy change associated with the introduction of one ionic species into a nonionic micelle coupled with the release of one nonionic species from the micelle. The clouding behaviour of Brij 97 in the presence of SDS was investigated and the associated thermodynamic parameters of clouding were generated and discussed.

At Malanjkhand, Central India, lode-type copper (-molybdenum) mineralization occurs within calcalkaline tonalite-granodiorite plutonic rocks of early Proterozoic age. The bulk of the mineralization occurs in sheeted quartz-sulfide veins, and K-silicate alteration assemblages, defined by alkali feldspar (K-feldspar ≫ albite) + dusty hematite in feldspar ± biotite ± muscovite, are prominent within the ore zone and the adjacent host rock. Weak propylitic alteration, defined by albite + biotite + epidote/zoisite, surrounds the K-silicate alteration zone. The mineralized zone is approximately 2 km in strike length, has a maximum thickness of 200 m and dips 65°–75°, along which low-grade mineralization has been traced up to a depth of about 1 km. The ore reserve has been conservatively estimated to be 92 million tonnes with an average Cu-content of 1.30%. Supergene oxidation, accompanied by limited copper enrichment, is observed down to a depth of 100m or more from the surface. Primary ores consist essentially of chalcopyrite and pyrite with minor magnetite and molybdenite. δ34S (‰) values in pyrite and chalcopyrite (−0.38 to +2.90) fall within the range characteristic of granitoid-hosted copper deposits. δ18O (‰) values for vein quartz (+ 6.99 to +8.80) suggest exclusive involvement of juvenile water. Annealed fabrics are common in the ore. The sequence of events that led to the present state of hypogene mineralization is suggested to be as follows: fracturing of the host rock, emplacement of barren vein quartz, pronounced wall-rock alteration accompanied by disseminated mineralization and the ultimate stage of intense silicification accompanied by copper mineralization. Fragments of vein quartz and altered wall rocks and striae in the ore suggest post-mineralization deformation. The recrystallization fabric, particularly in chalcopyrite and sphalerite, is a product of dynamic recrystallization associated with the post-mineralization shearing. The petrology of the host rocks, hydrothermal alteration assemblages, ore mineral associations, fluid inclusions and the sulfur and oxygen isotopes of ores are comparable to those in Phanerozoic (and reported Precambrian) porphyry-copper systems, and the Malanjkhand deposit has important implications for both metallogenic models for, and mineral exploration in, Precambrian terrains.
