Abstract

An equimolar mixture of Ni(NO3)2·6H2O and pyridine-2-aldehyde with two equivalents of NaN3 in methanol in the presence of NaOMe resulted in the formation of light green precipitate which upon crystallization from dimethylformamide (DMF) yielded light green single crystals [{Ni2Na2(pic)4(N3)2(H2O)2(MeOH)}· MeOH·3H2O]n (1) and [{Ni2Na2(pic)4(N3)2(H2O)4}·2DMF·H2O]n (2) (pic = pyridine-2-carboxylate) at room temperature and high temperature (100°C), respectively. Variable temperature magnetic studies revealed the existence of overall ferromagnetic behaviour with J ≈ +10 cm − 1 and D ≈ − 2 to −7 cm − 1 for 1 and 2, respectively. Negative D values as well as variation of D upon slight distortion of structure by varying reaction temperature were observed. The X-band Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectra of both 2 and 3 were recorded below 50 K. The structural distortion was also implicated from the EPR spectra. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations on both complexes were performed in two different ways to corroborate the magnetic results. Considering only Ni\(^{\rm II}_{2}\) dimeric unit, results were J = +20.65 cm − 1 and D = −3.16 cm − 1 for 1, and J = +24.56 cm − 1 and D = −4.67 cm − 1 for 2. However, considering Ni\(^{\rm II}_{2}\)Na\(^{\rm I}_{2}\) cubane as magnetic core the results were J = +16.35 cm − 1 (1), +19.54 cm − 1 (2); D = −3.05 cm − 1 (1), −4.25 cm − 1 (2).

Abstract

One new one-dimensional polymeric complex [Cd(C5H6N2)2(SeCN)2] n (1) has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, spectroscopic studies and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Crystal structure shows the one-dimensional chain is propagated through doubly bridging selenocyanate and 4-aminopyridine acts as terminal ligand. The complex was characterized by fluorescence and NMR spectral studies and the results are consistent with the crystal structure.

Abstract

The reaction of copper(II) chloride dihydrate with 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehydethiosemicarbazone (HL) ligand in a 1:1 ratio forms the complex [Cu(L)(Cl)] · H2O. The complex is characterized by spectroscopic, electrochemical, and thermal analysis. X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals that the central copper atom displays the distorted square planar geometry. The water molecule present in the lattice participates in a strong hydrogen bonding network, which leads to a 2D supramolecular arrangement.

Abstract

We have reported herein the synthesis of three new Cu(II) complexes of tri- and tetradentate Schiff base ligands containing N3 or N4 donor set along with terminal NNN− or SCN− ligands: [L1Cu(NCS)]ClO4 (1), [L2Cu(NCS)2] (2) and [L3Cu(NNN)]ClO4 (3) [L1 = NC5H4C(CH3)=N(CH2)3N=C(CH3)C5H4N, L2= Me2N–(CH2)3–N=C(CH3)C5H4N and L3 = NC5H4CH=N–(CH2)4–N=CHC5H4N]. The complexes have been systematically characterised by elemental, spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. Antimicrobial activities of the Schiff base ligands and their metal complexes have been studied using the disc diffusion method on the strains of Candida tropicalis and Bacillus megaterium. Structures of all the complexes have been unequivocally established from single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses that show the monomeric units containing a five-coordinated copper center in highly distorted square pyramidal geometry with thiocyanate or azide anion coordinated as terminal ligand. The complexes 1 and 3 crystallise in monoclinic (P21/c) and 2 in triclinic (P-1) space group, respectively.

Abstract

Two new complexes [CuBr(C11H13N2O)] (1) and [Cu(NCO)(C11H13N2O)] (2) containing the tridentate Schiff base ligand, N-(1-acetyl-2-propylidene)(2-pyridylmethyl) amine which is the 1:1 condensation product of acetylacetone and 2-aminomethylpyridine, have been synthesised and characterised by elemental analysis, IR and electronic spectra, electrochemical study and single crystal X-ray diffraction study. Crystal structures reveal that the copper atom in both the complexes are in square geometry formed by the N2O donor set of the Schiff base and a bromine atom in 1 and one cyanate ligand in 2. Both bromide and isocyanate ligands act in a terminal monodentate fashion.
