Background Femoral torsion is primarily measured by computed tomography (CT), which has cost and radiation exposure concerns. Recently, femoral anteversion measurement by a simple radiograph-based mobile application was developed for patients with cerebral palsy. This study aimed to validate the use of a mobile application that can reconstruct a three-dimensional model of the femur from conventional radiographs for adults. Methods Medical records of 76 patients undergoing conventional femur anteroposterior/lateral radiography and femur CT were reviewed. To measure femoral anteversion on the reconstructed 3-dimensional images from both the mobile application and CT, we drew a line which connects the posterior margins of each femoral condyle and another line which passes through the center of the femoral head and the midpoint of the femoral neck. After the reliability test, a single examiner measured femoral anteversion on the mobile application and CT. Pearson’s correlation analysis was used to assess the correlation between anteversion on the mobile application and CT. Results Femoral anteversion measured on both CT and the mobile application showed excellent reliability (intraclass correlation coefficients: 0.808–0.910). The correlation coefficient between femoral anteversion measured using CT and the mobile application was 0.933 (p p p Conclusions Using two simple radiographs, the mobile application showed excellent validity and reliability for femoral anteversion measurement in adults as compared to CT. With the high accessibility and cost-effectiveness of this mobile application, femoral torsion measurement might be easily performed with simple radiography in clinical settings in the near future.

A Gram-stain negative, rod shaped, motile by gliding, yellow-pigmented, aerobic bacterium, designated SE-1-eT, was isolated from a soil sample collected on Dokdo Island, South Korea. The isolate was characterized taxonomically using a polyphasic approach based on the phenotypic and genomic analyses. The phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain SE-1-eT belonged to the genus Flavobacterium in the family Flavobacteriaceae and had the highest sequence similarity with Flavobacterium cheongpyeongense IMCC34759T (97.5%), Flavobacterium arsenitoxidans S2-3HT (97.4%), Flavobacterium resistens BD-b365T (97.4%), and Flavobacterium chungangense CJ7T (97.4%). The predominant respiratory quinone of the isolate was found to be MK-6; the main polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine; and the major fatty acids were identified as summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c/C16:1 ω6c), C15:0 iso, and C16:0. The draft genome of strain SE-1-eT had a length of 3,715,609 bp and a DNA G + C content of 34.8 mol%. The nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA–DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between the novel isolate and F. cheongpyeongense IMCC34759T, F. resistens BD-b365T, and Flavobacterium chungangense CJ7T ranged from 74.9 to 75.3% and from 20.2 to 20.9%, respectively. On the basis of its phenotypic properties, genotypic distinctiveness, and chemotaxonomic features, strain SE-1-eT represents a novel species in the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium agrisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SE-1-eT (= KCTC 82352 T = JCM 34302 T).

Plant-rhizobacteria interaction and co-evolution developed adaptive strategies which may help the plant survive in nature. Plant rhizosphere soil isolates were analyzed to investigated the effects of rhizobacteria for promoting plant growth and suppress plant disease. Bacterial strains which isolated from plant rhizosphere soil were screened for elicitation of induced systemic resistance (ISR) on tobacco. Strain S2-3-2 results in significant reduction of disease severity on tobacco, it was identified as Bacillus pumilus by multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA). Strain S2-3-2 was deeper studied for pepper plant growth promotion and biological control activity against pepper bacterial spot disease. It was found that the pepper disease severity was decreased when the roots were drenched with strain S2-3-2, and the pepper plants had a higher weight and chlorophyll content, as compared with the mock-treated plants. Transcriptional expression of pathogenesis-related (PR) protein genes in pepper was analyzed by real-time PCR, gene expressions of CaPR1, CaPR4, and CaPR10 were increased when the plants were treated with strain S2-3-2. Moreover, strain S2-3-2 was tested for the production of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and it was determined to emit volatiles that enhance the growth of the tobacco plants. Interesting, heat-killed S2-3-2 enhance the pepper root growth, increase the gene expressions of CaPR4 and CaPR10 after pathogen challenge for 6 h, but limited to suppress the pepper bacterial spot disease as compare to the mock-treated plants. Strain S2-3-2 can be a potential biological control agent on the plant root for plant growth promoting and disease suppression.

Polarization of light is a fundamental characteristic which represents the oscillation of electric fields in electromagnetic optics. The utilization of polarization gives opportunities to analyze the light-matter interaction or improve the performance of optical devices. Miniaturization of polarimeter consisting of bulky optical components is an important challenge for applying to integrated photonic chips or sensors. In this letter, we propose a compact plasmonic polarimeter with six different plasmonic lenses for detecting Stokes parameters in near field. Each plasmonic lens, which focuses plasmonic fields under the specific polarization incidence, can be designed by pairs of nanoslit with different configurations. We theoretically and numerically show that the intensities of plasmonic focal spots can derive full Stokes parameter. We expect that the proposed work can contribute to miniaturization and integration of polarimeter.

A bacterial strain, 17J42-1T, was isolated from a soil sample collected on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. Colonies grown on R2A agar were pink in color, and cells were Gram-stain negative, short and rod-shaped. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences identified this strain as a member of the genus Methylobacterium in the family Methylobacteriaceae, with high levels of 16S rRNA sequence similarity shared with Methylobacterium oxalidis 35aT (98.6%), Methylobacterium jeotgali S2R03-9T (97.5%), and Methylobacterium soli YIM 48816T (97.3%). Cells grew at 15–35 °C, pH 5–9, and in the presence of 0–1.0% NaCl. The genomic G + C content was 70.2 mol% based on the whole genome analysis. The predominant respiratory quinone was ubiquinone Q-10, the major fatty acid was C18:1ω7c (85.3%), and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, and diphosphatidylglycerol. The phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data support the affiliation of strain 17J42-1T with the genus Methylobacterium. However, the DNA–DNA relatedness between the isolate and its closest phylogenetic neighbors was lower than 38%. The OrthoANI and dDDH values between strain 17J42-1T and the closest type strain Methylobacterium oxalidis NBRC 107715T were calculated to be 85.9% and 30.6%, respectively. The results of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity analysis, DNA–DNA hybridization analysis, and the observed differentiating phenotypic properties from other closely related taxa clearly indicate that strain 17J42-1T represents a novel species in the genus Methylobacterium, for which the name Methylobacterium segetis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 17J42-1T (= KCTC 62267T = JCM 33059T).

A bacterial strain, 17JY9-4T, was isolated from a soil sample collected on Jeju Island, South Korea. Colonies grown on R2A agar are pale pink in color, and cells are Gram-stain negative, short, and rod-shaped. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences identified this strain as a member of the genus Mucilaginibacter in the family Sphingobacteriaceae, with high levels of 16S rRNA sequence similarity shared with Mucilaginibacter lutimaris BR-3T (98.0%), Mucilaginibacter rigui WPCB133T (98.0%), Mucilaginibacter phyllosphaerae PP-F2F-G21T (97.0%), Mucilaginibacter amnicola TAPP7T (96.8%), and Mucilaginibacter soli R9-65T (96.7%). Growth of strain 17JY9-4T occurs at 10–30 °C, pH 6–8, and in the presence of 0–1.0% NaCl. The genomic G+C content is 44.38 mol%. The predominant respiratory quinone of the isolate is MK-7; the major fatty acids are summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c/C16:1ω6c) (39.7%), iso-C15:0 (22.8%), iso-C17:0 3-OH (7.8%), and C16:0 (7.7%); and the major polar lipid is phosphatidylethanolamine. The phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data support the placement of strain 17JY9-4T within the genus Mucilaginibacter. However, the DNA–DNA relatedness between the isolate and M. rigui, M. lutimaris, M. phyllosphaerae, M. amnicola, and M. soli were 44.3 ± 3.0%, 38.6 ± 3.7%, 23.2 ± 2.9%, 21.9 ± 3.1%, and 18.6 ± 3.7%, respectively. The results of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity analysis, DNA–DNA hybridization analysis, and the observed differentiating phenotypic properties from other closely related taxa clearly indicate that strain 17JY9-4T represents a novel species in the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter terrigena sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 17JY9-4T (= KCTC 62294T = JCM 33049T).

Toward the development of surface-sensitive analytical techniques for biosensors and diagnostic biochip assays, a local integration of low-concentration target materials into the sensing region of interest is essential to improve the sensitivity and reliability of the devices. As a result, the dynamic process of sorting and accurate positioning the nanoparticulate biomolecules within pre-defined micro/nanostructures is critical, however, it remains a huge hurdle for the realization of practical surface-sensitive biosensors and biochips. A scalable, massive, and non-destructive trapping methodology based on dielectrophoretic forces is highly demanded for assembling nanoparticles and biosensing tools. Herein, we propose a vertical nanogap architecture with an electrode-insulator-electrode stack structure, facilitating the generation of strong dielectrophoretic forces at low voltages, to precisely capture and spatiotemporally manipulate nanoparticles and molecular assemblies, including lipid vesicles and amyloid-beta protofibrils/oligomers. Our vertical nanogap platform, allowing low-voltage nanoparticle captures on optical metasurface designs, provides new opportunities for constructing advanced surface-sensitive optoelectronic sensors., Label-free trapping of nanoparticles via dielectophoretic forces is traditionally done with electrodes in a horizontal gap layout. Here, the authors present a vertical nanogap architecture, which allows for precise capture and spatiotemporal manipulation of nanoparticles and molecular assemblies.

Background In order to optimize the tenogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), researchers should consider various factors. However, this requires testing numerous experimental settings, which is costly and time-consuming. We aimed to assess the differential effects of transforming growth factor beta-3 (TGF-β3) on the tenogenesis of tonsil-derived MSCs (T-MSCs) and bone marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs) using response surface methodology (RSM). Methods Bone marrow and tonsillar tissue were collected from four patients; mononuclear cells were separated and treated with 5 or 10 ng/mL of TGF-β3. A full factorial experimental design with a categorical factor of 0 was employed to study the effect of tension based on T-MSCs. Eighty-four trials were fitted with RSM and then used to obtain mathematical prediction models. Results Exposure of T-MSCs and BM-MSCs to TGF-β3 increased the expression of scleraxis (SCX), tenomodulin (TNMD), decorin, collagen I, and tenascin C. Expression of most of these factors reached a maximum after 2–3 days of treatment. The model predicted that the values of the tenocyte lineage-related factors assessed would be significantly increased at 2.5 days of culture with 2.7 ng/mL of TGF-β3 for T-MSCs and at 2.3 days of culture regardless of TGF-β3 concentration for BM-MSCs. Conclusions This study demonstrated that the RSM prediction of the culture time necessary for the tenogenic differentiation of T-MSCs and BM-MSCs under TGF-β3 stimulation was similar to the experimentally determined time of peak expression of tenocyte-related mRNAs, suggesting the potential of using the RSM approach for optimization of the culture protocol for tenogenesis of MSCs.

In this study, a new species within the genus Colletotrichum was isolated from diseased persimmon leaves collected from Sangju and Cheongdo in the Gyeongbuk province of Korea. The disease was characterized by leaf spots with a brown to gray center surrounded by a black ring with a green halo. Black acervuli with setae and numerous curved conidia were observed on the leaf spots. Phylogenetic analysis based on a combination of multiple loci, including sequences of the internal transcribed spacers, actin, beta-tubulin, chitin synthase-1, and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase genes, revealed that the isolates were clearly distinct from other species of the Colletotrichum dematium complex, with the closest species being C. anthrisci. Cultural and morphological characteristics and pathogenicity on persimmon leaves were examined. The isolates differed from C. anthrisci in their cultural and morphological characteristics, such as the conidia and appressoria. Based on molecular phylogenetic, morphological, and cultural characteristics and pathogenicity, this fungus was demonstrated to be a new species, Colletotrichum kakivorum, and the causal agent of a leaf spot disease on persimmon in Korea.

The taxonomic position of bacterial strain, designated 15J9-4T, recovered from a beach soil sample on Jeju Island, South Korea, was established using a polyphasic approach. Strain 15J9-4T was assigned to phylum Bacteroidetes within the family Cytophagaceae based on 16S rRNA gene similarities. The closest phylogenetic relatives with validly published names were Spirosoma panaciterrae Gsoil 1519T (94.2% similarity) and Spirosoma luteolum 16F6ET (94.1%). Cells were rod-shaped, Gram-stain-negative, and non-motile. The isolate grew on NA, R2A, TSA, and LB agar. The temperature limits for growth were 10 and 30 °C with an optimum at 25 °C and the pH range was 7–8. Menaquinone MK-7 was the predominant respiratory quinone. The major cellular fatty acids comprised summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω6c/C16:1 ω7c, 30.2%), C16:1 ω5c (22.2%), iso C15:0 (12.9%), and C16:0 (8.8%). Phosphatidylethanolamine was identified as the major polar lipid. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 48.4 mol%. The results obtained from the polyphasic analyses allowed for the genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain 15J9-4T from recognized Spirosoma species. Therefore, the isolate is considered to represent a novel species in the genus Spirosoma, for which the name Spirosoma terrae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 15J9-4T (= KCTC 52035T = JCM 31994T).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterial strain, designated S7-4-1T, was isolated from soil in Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea and characterized using a polyphasic approach to determine its taxonomic position. Phylogenic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain S7-4-1T belonged to the family Cytophagaceae and was most closely related to Spirosoma fluviale MSd3T (96.2%), ‘Spirosoma radiotolerans’ DG5A (96.0%), Spirosoma pulveris JSH5-14T (95.9%), and Spirosoma linguale DSM 74T (95.8%). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of the isolate was 49.0 mol%. The strain contained summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c/C16:1 ω6c; 41.0%), C16:1 ω5c (24.9%), and C15:0 iso (9.3%) as the major fatty acids, menaquinone MK-7 as the predominant respiratory quinone, and phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified aminophospholipid as the main polar lipids, which supported its affiliation with the genus Spirosoma. The results of physiological and biochemical tests allowed the genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of the isolate from recognized Spirosoma species. On the basis of its phenotypic properties, genotypic distinctiveness, and chemotaxonomic features, strain S7-4-1T represents a novel species of the genus Spirosoma, for which the name Spirosoma humi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S7-4-1T (= KCTC 52729T = JCM 32132T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, curved rod-shaped, aerobic bacterium, designated S1-2-4T, was isolated from soil in Jeollabuk-do province, Republic of Korea, and was characterized taxonomically using a polyphasic approach. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain S1-2-4T was a member of the family Cytophagaceae and most closely related to 'Spirosoma radiotolerans' DG5A (97.2%), Spirosoma fluviale MSd3T (96.4%), and Spirosoma linguale DSM 74T (96.3%). The genomic DNA G + C content of strain S1-2-4T was 49.7 mol%. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c/C16:1 ω6c), C16:1 ω5c, and C16:0, and the major polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. MK-7 was the predominant respiratory quinone. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data supported the affiliation of strain S1-2-4T with the genus Spirosoma. DNA-DNA hybridization between strain S1-2-4T and 'Spirosoma radiotolerans' showed relatively low DNA-DNA relatedness (31%). Strain S1-2-4T could be distinguished from its closest phylogenetic neighbors based on its phenotypic, genotypic, and chemotaxonomic features. Therefore, strain S1-2-4T represents a novel member of the genus Spirosoma, for which the name Spirosoma lituiforme sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S1-2-4T (= KCTC 52724T = JCM 32128T).

A novel, Gram-staining negative, yellow pigmented bacterial strain, designated 15J11-2T, was isolated from soil sample on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. The strain was subjected to a taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach. The strain was able to grow at temperature range from 10°C to 30°C, pH 7–8, and in presence of 0–1% (w/v) NaCl. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain 15J11-2T belongs to the genus Spirosoma and levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity ranged from 91.5% to 89.8%. The genomic DNA G + C content of strain 15J11-2T was 46.0 mol%. The isolate contained phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified aminophospholipid as the main polar lipids, menaquinone MK-7 as the predominant respiratory quinone, and summed feature 3 (C16:1ω6c/C16:1ω7c; 39.4%), C16:1ω5c (27.1%), and C16:0 (13.0%) as the major fatty acids, which supported the affiliation of strain 15J11-2T to the genus Spirosoma. The results of physiological and biochemical tests allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain 15J11-2T from recognized Spirosoma species. On the basis of its phenotypic properties, genotypic distinctiveness, chemotaxonomic features, strain 15J11-2T represents a novel species of the genus Spirosoma, for which the name Spirosoma flavus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 15J11-2T (= KCTC 52026T = JCM 31998T).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterium, designated 15J9-6T, was isolated from beach soil on Jeju Island, South Korea. Strain 15J9-6T, grew at 10–30°C (optimum growth at 25°C) and pH 7–8 (optimum growth at pH 7) on R2A, NA, and TSA agar. Phylogenetically, the strain was closely related to members of the genus Spirosoma (92.3–90.1% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities) and showed highest sequence similarity to Spirosoma panaciterrae DSM 21099T (92.3%). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain 15J9-6T was 45.7 mol%. The strain contained phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminophospholipids, an unidentified phospholipid, and an unidentified lipid as the major polar lipids; menaquinone MK-7 as the predominant respiratory quinone and summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω6c/C16:1 ω7c; 30.1%), C16:1 ω5c (23.1%), iso C15:0 (13.3%), and C16:0 (8.4%) as the major fatty acids which supported the affiliation of strain 15J9-6T to the genus Spirosoma. The results of physiological and biochemical tests allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain 15J9-6T from recognized Spirosoma species. On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain 15J9-6T represents a novel species of the genus Spirosoma, for which the name Spirosoma daeguensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 15J9-6T (=KCTC 52036T =JCM 31995T)

The ionizing radiation toxicity becomes a primary concern of the world; several exceptional attention was given to the resistance mechanisms of the radiation-resistant bacteria. Hymenobacter sedentarius DG5BT strain isolated from the gamma ray-irradiated soil samples shows resistance against gamma and UV radiation; however, their level of resistance is lower than that of other radiation resistant bacteria. To gain insight of radiation resistance, we carried out the whole genome sequencing of this strain. The genome of DG5BT strain is comprised of 4,868,852 bp (G+C content of 60.96%) including 3,994 protein-coding genes and 55 RNA genes. When compared with other bacteria, there are differences in compositions and copy numbers of several genes involved in DNA repair pathways and defense mechanism against protein damages. In this study, we discuss the implication of such findings concerning other radiation resistant bacteria.

A Gram-negative, short rod-shaped, gliding motile, and pale pink-pigmented bacterial strain, designated 15J9-9T, was isolated from the soil of Iho Tewoo Beach, Jeju Island, Korea, and characterized taxonomically using a polyphasic approach. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain 15J9-9T belonged to the family Cytophagaceae and was related to Larkinella bovis M2T2B15T (96.5% similarity), Larkinella arboricola Z0532T (95.3% similarity), and Larkinella insperata LMG 22510T (95.2% similarity). The DNA G+C content of strain 15J9-9T was 48 mol%. The detection of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine, two unknown aminophospholipids (APL1 and APL2), and two unknown polar lipids (L1 and L2) in polar lipid profile, menaquinone-7 as the predominant quinone, and a fatty acid profile of C16:1 ω5c, iso-C15:0, and iso-C17:0 3-OH as the major fatty acids supported the affiliation of strain 15J9-9T to the genus Larkinella. Based on its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain 15J9-9T should be classified in the genus Larkinella as a representative of a novel species, for which the name Larkinella harenae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 15J9-9T (=KCTC 42999T = JCM 31656T).

A novel Gram-negative and rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated as 16F6ET, was isolated from a water sample. Cells were yellowish in color and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The strain grew at 10–37°C (optimum at 25°C) but not at 4 and 42°C, and pH 5–7 (optimum at pH 7). It showed moderate resistance to gamma-ray irradiation. Comparative phylogenetic analysis showed that strain 16F6ET belonged to the family Cytophagaceae of the class Cytophagia. Furthermore, this isolate showed relatively low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities (90.7–93.1%) to the members of the genus Spirosoma. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c/C16:1ω6c), C16:1ω5c, C16:0 N alcohol, and C16:0. The polar lipid profile indicated presence of phosphatidylethanolamine, unknown aminophospholipids, an unknown amino lipid, unknown phospholipids, and unknown polar lipids. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain 16F6ET was 56.5 mol%. Phenotypic, phylogenetic, and chemotaxonomic properties indicated that isolate 16F6ET represents a novel species within the genus Spirosoma, for which the name Spirosoma luteolum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 16F6ET (=KCTC 52199T =JCM 31411T).

A gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile, gamma and UV-tolerant bacterium, Hymenobacter sp. DG25A, was isolated from a soil sample collected in South Korea. The isolated strain demonstrated high level of resistance against gamma irradiation, with a D10 value of 6 kGy. The complete genome of Hymenobacter sp. DG25A was found to consist of a single chromosome (3,777,136 bp). The bacterium was isolated from a gamma ray-irradiated soil sample and was found to contain enzymes involved in the accumulation of manganese, which protects proteins from oxidation by reactive oxygen species. The genome also encodes enzymes for the nucleotide excision repair pathway, which leads to the efficient removal of double-strand breaks caused by ionizing radiation such as gamma and UV rays. An understanding of these genomic features can potentially be used in several biotechnological applications such as for the degradation of harmful contaminants or radioactive waste.

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterial strain, designated 16F3Y-2T, was isolated from the Han River, South Korea, and was characterized taxonomically using a polyphasic approach. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain 16F3Y-2T belonged to the family Cytophagaceae in the phylum Bacteroidetes and was most closely related to ‘Hymenobacter terrae’ DG7A (98.01%), H. soli PB17T (97.26%), H. glaciei VUG-A130T (96.78%), H. antarcticus VUG-A42aaT (96.72%), H. ruber PB156T (96.61%), and H. saemangeumensis GSR0100T (95.77%). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain 16F3Y-2T was 62.9 mol%. The isolate contained MK-7 as the predominant respiratory quinone, and summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c/C16:1ω6c; 35.5%), C15:0 iso (16.9%), C16:1ω5c (10.9%), and C15:0 anteiso (9.9%) as major fatty acids. The major polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data supported the affiliation of strain 16F3Y-2T with the genus Hymenobacter. However, strain 16F3Y-2T exhibited relatively low levels of DNA-DNA relatedness with ‘H. terrae’ KCTC 32554 (44.1%) and H. soli KCTC 12607T (24.3%), clearly indicating that the isolate constitutes a new genospecies. Strain 16F3Y-2T could be differentiated from its phylogenetic neighbors on the basis of several phenotypic, genotypic, and chemotaxonomic features. Therefore, strain 16F3Y-2T represents a novel species in the genus Hymenobacter, for which the name Hymenobacter daeguensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 16F3Y-2T (=KCTC 52537T =JCM 31654T).

Strain 16F3HT, a Gram-negative, aerobic, non-motile, and oval-shaped bacterium, was isolated from river water collected from the Han River in South Korea. Growth of strain 16F3HT was observed at 10-42 °C (optimum at 25-30 °C), but no growth occurred at 4 °C. The strain is able to grow at pH 4-10 (optimum at pH 7-8) and tolerates up to 4% NaCl (w/v), with optimum growth at 0.5% NaCl. The isolate was found to be resistant to UV irradiation. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, it is closely related to 'Deinococcus seoulensis' 16F1E (98.8%), Deinococcus aquaticus PB314T (98.1%) and Deinococcus caeni Ho-08T (98.0%). The level of DNA-DNA homology between the novel strain and the three related strains was 57.4, 41.2, and 35.8%, respectively. Chemotaxonomic data revealed that strain 16F3HT possesses MK-8 as the predominant respiratory quinone, an unidentified phosphoglycolipid as the major polar lipid, and C15:1 ω6c and C16:1 ω7c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G + C content was determined to be 65.7 mol%. Based on polyphasic evidence, strain 16F3HT (=KCTC 33794T = JCM 31406T) should be classified as the type strain of a novel Deinococcus species, for which the name Deinococcus knuensis sp. nov. is proposed.

The pathological and physiological defects in various types of fruits lead to large amounts of economical waste. It is well recognized that internal fruit defects due to pathological infections and physiological disorders can be effectively visualized at an initial stage of the disease using a well-known bio-photonic detection method called optical coherence tomography (OCT). This work investigates the use of OCT for identifying the morphological variations of anthracnose (bitter rot) disease infected and physiologically disordered Diospyros kaki (Asian Persimmon) fruits. An experiment was conducted using fruit samples that were carefully selected from persimmon orchards. Depth-resolved images with a high axial resolution were acquired using 850-nm-based spectral-domain OCT (SD-OCT) system. The obtained exemplary high-resolution two-dimensional and volumetric three-dimensional images revealed complementary morphological differences between healthy and defected samples. Moreover, the obtained depth-profile analysis results confirmed the disappearance of the healthy cell layers among the healthy-infected boundary regions. Thus, the proposed method has the potential to increase the diagnostic accuracy of the OCT technique used in agricultural plantations.

A Gram-negative, long rod-shaped, and yellowish bacterium, designated as strain 15J17TT, was isolated from sediment of the Han River in South Korea after exposure to 3 kGy of gamma radiation. The strain was catalase- and oxidase-positive and showed resistance to gamma radiation—D10 value (i.e., the dose required to reduce the bacterial population by 10-fold) of >4 kGy. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the strain belonged to the genus Spirosoma and showed moderate degrees of sequence similarity with related species (90.6–93.5 %). Chemotaxonomic data revealed that the strain contained summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c/C16:1 ω6c), C16:1 ω5c, C16:0, C18:0, and C15:0 iso as the major fatty acids; phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminophospholipid, and an unidentified polar lipid as the major polar lipids; and menaquinone-7 (MK-7) as the major quinone. The genomic DNA G+C content of the new strain was 48.3 mol%. Based on these data, type strain 15J17TT (=KCTC 52198T = JCM 31409T) should be classified as representing a new species, for which we propose the name Spirosoma fluminis sp. nov.

Strain 16F1E(T) was isolated from a 3-kGy-irradiated sediment sample collected at Han River in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Cells of this strain were observed to be Gram-positive, pililike structure, and short rod shape, and colonies were red in color. The strain showed the highest degree of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Deinococcus aquaticus PB314(T) (98.8%), Deinococcus depolymerans TDMA-24(T) (98.1%), Deinococcus caeni Ho-08(T) (98.0%), and Deinococcus grandis DSM 3963(T) (97.0%). 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis identified this strain as a member of the genus Deinococcus (Family: Deinococcaceae). The genomic DNA G+C content of strain 16F1ET was 66.9 mol%. The low levels of DNA-DNA hybridization (< 56.2%) with the species mentioned above identified strain 16F1E(T) as a novel Deinococcus species. Its oxidase and catalase activities as well as the production of acid from glucose were positive. Growth of the strain was observed at 10-37°C (optimum: 20-30°C) and pH 4-10 (optimum: pH 7-8). The cells tolerated less than 5% NaCl and had low resistance to gamma radiation (D10 < 4 kGy). Strain 16F1ET possessed the following chemotaxonomic characteristics: C16:0, C15:1 ω6c, and C16:1 ω7c as the major fatty acids; phosphoglycolipid as the predominant polar lipid; and menaquinone-8 as the predominant respiratory isoprenoid quinone. Based on the polyphasic evidence, as well as the phylogenetic, genotypic, phenotypic, and chemotaxonomic characterization results, strain 16F1E(T) (=KCTC 33793(T) =JCM 31404(T)) is proposed to represent the type strain of a novel species, Deinococcus seoulensis sp. nov.

The ionizing radiation toxicity becomes a major concern for the modern world, recent years, several special interest has been given to the research for the radiation resistant and the mechanisms of which the radiation resistant bacteria survive after the irradiation. In the current study, we have isolated strain DG31D was isolated from gamma ray-irradiated soil sample and showed resistant to gamma and UV radiation. The aim of this study is to understanding the radiation resistant mechanisms and their genomic features of the strain DG31D, which can be potentially used for the biotechnological application to degrade harmful soil contamination near the nuclear power stations and other radiation-affected areas. Strain DG31D showed resistant to UV and gamma radiation with D10 value of 10 kGy. The genome comprised of 4,820,793 bp with the G+C content of 51.4%. It contains the genomic features of enzymes involved in the nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway that protect the damaged DNA.

Deinococcus swuensis DY59T is a Grampositive, coccus-shaped bacterium. Most members of the genus Deinococcus are able to grow in the presence of high levels of chronic radiation toxicity and desiccation because they can protect enzymes from reactive oxygen species generated during ionizing radiation. The mechanisms behind the resistance to radiation toxicity and the genomic features of resistance could be useful to exploit Deinococcus swuensis in the biotechnological applications such as detoxification of xenobiotic contaminated with radioactive wastes. Strain DY59T showed resistance to gamma radiation with a D10 value (i.e. the dose required to reduce the bacterial population by 10-fold) in excess of 5 kGy. However, the genus Deinococcus is slightly characterized at the genome level, despite its potential importance. Thus, the present study determined the features of Deinococcus swuensis DY59T, as well as its genome sequence and annotation. The genome comprised of 3,531,443 bp with a G + C content of 67.4%, which included 3,305 protein-coding genes and 58 RNA genes. Based on the genome annotation, the strain DY59T undergoes prokaryotic type nucleotide excision repair pathway, restores the damaged gene, and resists the ionizing radiation toxicity.

The purposes of this study are to assess the usefulness of bedside swallowing tests and identify the clinical risk factors for subglottic aspiration after esophagectomy in esophageal cancer patients. The study included patients who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal cancer between January and August 2013. Videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) was carried out 7 to 10 days post-surgery, and clinical bedside swallowing tests were conducted to determine the risk factors for subglottic aspiration. A total of 118 patients were evaluated, 38 of whom (32.2 %) showed evidence of subglottic aspiration on VFSS. The clinical bedside swallowing test yielded positive results in 26 of the 38 patients with subglottic aspiration (sensitivity 68.4 %). Background We performed this study to investigate the influence of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) therapy on radiographic indices of the spine using propensity-matched analysis. Methods Patients with idiopathic short stature who had undergone both growth hormone therapy and whole-spine radiographs more than twice prior to 15 years of age were included in the patient group. Other patients who had undergone whole-spine radiographs more than twice prior to the same age during regular checkups for idiopathic scoliosis formed the control group. Propensity-matched analysis was performed to reduce the selection bias. The scoliosis Cobb angle, coronal balance, apical vertebral translation, apical rotation, and pelvic obliquity were measured from the radiographs taken at the periodic follow-ups. The rate of progression of the measurements was adjusted by multiple factors using a linear mixed model with sex as the fixed effect and age and each subject as the random effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the gender- and body-site-specific factors associated with bone mineral density (BMD) at the femoral neck and lumbar spine in a non-institutionalized population aged ≥50 years characterized by low average calcium intake. The comprehensive data utilized were from the 2010 Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which included health behavior questionnaire, blood and urine tests, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and nutrition intake. The factors associated with BMD at the femoral neck and lumbar spine in both genders were analyzed separately using multiple regression analysis with a stepwise selection. The average daily calcium intake in the male subjects was 565.8 mg and in the female subjects was 443.7 mg. In multiple regression analysis, age, body mass index (BMI), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lead, daily calcium intake, and cadmium were the significant factors associated with femoral neck BMD in male subjects. BMI, creatinine (Cr), total body fat percentile, lead, ALP, and hypertension were found to be the significant factors associated with lumbar spine BMD in male subjects. In the female subjects, the significant factors associated with femoral neck BMD were age, BMI, ALP, house income, and total body fat percentile, while menopause, Cr, mercury, house income, BMI, and ALP were found to be the significant factors associated with lumbar spine BMD. In conclusion, different factors were associated with BMD depending on gender and the body site tested (femoral neck or lumbar spine). These gender- and body-site-specific factors need to be considered for the prevention and management of osteoporosis.

In this study, we distinguished Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) infected seeds from healthy seeds using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Two dimensional OCT images and stereo micrographs revealed that the infected seeds had narrow gap between the seed coat and endosperm that were not present in the healthy seeds. Three dimensional OCT images confirmed that the narrow gaps were present in the inner structure of overall the infected seeds. A-scan analysis was also performed to calculate the distance from the seed coat to the endosperm. The results revealed a difference in the width of the gap of about 20 μm between healthy and infected cucumber seeds. Taken together, these results suggest that OCT could be applied as an effective non-destructive method for CGMMV infection of cucumber seeds.

Background Although ankle fracture surgery can affect glycemic control by either trauma-induced stress or a postoperative decrease in physical activity, there is little evidence on this issue. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of ankle fracture surgery on glycemic control and to assess the risk factors for poor glycemic control after surgery in patients with diabetes. Methods We reviewed the medical records of consecutive patients with diabetes who underwent open reduction and internal fixation for the treatment of ankle fracture at our hospital. Patients who underwent blood testing, including fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and cholesterol levels, as part of a routine check-up before surgery and again more than 2 times after surgery were included. Changes in blood test results were adjusted by multiple factors using a linear mixed model with sex, age at time of surgery, body mass index (BMI), and type of ankle fracture as the fixed effects and each subject and timing of blood test as the random effects. Results Sixty patients were ultimately included in this study. At 1 month postoperatively, mean FBG and cholesterol levels had increased significantly compared with preoperative levels (p = 0.011 and 0.024, respectively). After surgery, FBG levels showed an estimated monthly decrease of 2.2 mg/dL (p = 0.017). Sex, age at time of surgery, and type of ankle fracture did not significantly affect the monthly change in FBG level. FBG returned to the preoperative level at an estimated period of 8.1 months. BMI significantly affected preoperative FBG level (p = 0.015) but not the postoperative change in FBG level (p = 0.500). Conclusion Ankle fracture surgery increased the FBG level at 1 month postoperatively. FBG levels decreased gradually after surgery at an estimated monthly rate of 2.2 mg/dL. Physicians should be aware of the difficulty in postoperative blood glucose control in patients with diabetes, even several months after surgery.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of the recumbent bicycle. The recumbent bicycle is a type of bicycle usually used to train or exercise a patient or the elderly. A recumbent bicycle was specially constructed for this study by researchers. The speed and power can be recorded and displayed on the monitor of the recumbent bicycle. The experiments consisted of four steps with different start-knee angle (α=85°, 105°, 125°, 145°). The activation and force of lower limb muscles were measured and calculated using an electromyography (EMG) and a computer simulation respectively. The maximum of intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and their differences were calculated to compare between the data of different muscles. The data obtained from test and retest was shown to have a good reliability on all of the measured muscles. The ICC is 0.93 for biceps femoris (BF) of step 2 (α=105°). This paper presents a servo motor selection technique for a mobile mine detection system which is operated in the field condition. As a first step, mine detection sensor should follow the earth profile while maintaining a constant distance to the earth surface. In order to acquire a reasonable manipulator trajectory and its required torque, a kind of modeling technique is devised to remove the unwanted fluctuations in the earth data. Then, Straete et al.'s normalization method is adopted and is improved to select the adequate actuator for each joint of manipulator. The improvements are as follows: First, an equivalent output power lines are plotted at the same load curve, which gives another selection criterion. Second, a temperature based criterion is proposed for the continuous limit, which estimates the steady state winding temperature of a motor, and can be used to determine a suitable motor and gear ratio. This formulation gives not only the selection of a motor and gear ratio, but also gives the estimated operating temperature. Finally, realized system is verified through the basic performance test.

In this study, gender differences in physiological variables were analyzed to evaluate the curative effectiveness of therapeutic ultrasound at different intensities and durations of exposure. The Pulse Transit Time (PTT) was selected as the evaluation parameter for analyzing gender differences according to the irradiation conditions. Therapeutic ultrasound was irradiated to total of 20 subjects comprising 10 males and 10 females. It was applied to the subjects at intensities of 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0W/cm2, and for durations of 3 and 5 minutes at each experimental stage. As a result, it was observed that PTT during normal circumstances is greater for male subjects compared to female subjects. Furthermore, it was shown that changes in the duration and intensity of ultrasound irradiation have no effect on PTT increment. It was also observed that upon irradiation, blood vessels demonstrate greater sensitivity to dilation in females than males.

The objective of the study was to propose a MFR (Multipurpose Field Robot) in hazardous operation environments. This system combines a basic system composed of a multi-DOF (Degree Of Freedom) manipulator and a mobile platform with an additional module for construction, national defense and emergency-rescue. According to an additional module type combined with a basic system, it can be used in a various fields. In this study, we describe a prototype of construction robot which helps a human operator handle easily construction materials in case of using the cooperation system on construction site. This study introduces an additional module for construction and a robot control algorithm for a HRC (Human-Robot Cooperation). In addition, it proposes a novel construction method to install construction materials with robot on construction site.

The development of automation in construction has been restricted by the variety of construction materials used, variable circumstances, and difficulties in the quantitative management of the construction process. Curtain wall, however, can be considered a relatively standard material compared to other construction materials. In this study, we analyze the current process of curtain wall installation and investigate the potential of an automated system combining a commercial excavator and a 3-DOF manipulator. This automated system has the adaptations necessary to work with any type of commercialized excavator. Therefore, workers need to transfer only the 3-DOF manipulator portion of the system when they move to other construction sites. This paper investigates experimental trials involving the proposed system at construction sites to determine its performance, working time, and efficiency. Results from this study were analyzed and further research options outlined.

Previously, ASCI (Automation System for Curtain-wall Installation) which combined with a multi-DOF manipulator to a mini-excavator was developed and applied on construction site. As result, the operation by one operator and more intuitive operation method are proposed to improve ASCI's operation method which need one person with a remote joystick and another operating an excavator. The human-robot cooperative system can cope with various and untypical constructing environment through the real-time interacting with a human, robot and constructing environment simultaneously. The physical power of a robot system helps a human to handle heavy construction materials with relatively scaled-down load. Also, a human can feel and response the force reflected from robot end effecter acting with working environment. This paper presents the feasibility study regarding the application of the proposed human-robot cooperation control for construction robot through experiments on a 2DOF manipulator.

Manipulator design methodology is a recent and important issue in the robot design research area. Most importantly, to design a robot rationally, one must have a strong understanding of the design parameters of the manipulator, and of the characteristics of the robot relative to its kinematical and dynamical requirements. Development of a robot capable of fast movements or high payloads is progressed by the analysis of dynamic characteristics, DOF positioning, actuator selection, structure of links, and so on. This paper highlights the design of a robot manipulator scaled down from its final form, when it will passively be handled by a human for man-machine cooperation. The requirements of the system include its having 6-DOF and the capacity for a high payload in the condition of its maximum reach. The primary investigation factors are motion range, performance within the motion area, and reliability during the handling of heavy materials. Traditionally, the mechanical design of robots has been viewed as a problem of packaging motors and electronics into a reasonable structure. This process usually transpires with heavy reliance on designer experience. Not surprisingly, the traditional design process contains no formally defined rules for achieving desirable results, as there is little opportunity for quantitative feedback during the formative stages. This work primarily focuses on the selection of proper joint types and link lengths, considering a specific task type and motion requirements of the curtain wall installation process in the construction site based on the result of experiment of proto type system of this study.

Background: Codman's paradox reveals a misunderstanding of geometry in orthopedic practice. Physicians often encounter situations that cannot be understood intuitively during orthopedic interventions such as corrective osteotomy. Occasionally, unexpected angular or rotational deformity occurs during surgery. This study aimed to draw the attention of orthopedic surgeons toward the concepts of orientation and rotation and demonstrate the potential for unexpected deformity after orthopedic interventions. This study focused on three situations: shoulder arthrodesis, femoral varization derotational osteotomy, and femoral derotation osteotomy. Methods: First, a shoulder model was generated to calculate unexpected rotational deformity to demonstrate Codman's paradox. Second, femoral varization derotational osteotomy was simulated using a cylinder model. Third, a reconstructed femoral model was used to calculate unexpected angular or rotational deformity during femoral derotation osteotomy. Results: Unexpected external rotation was found after forward elevation and abduction of the shoulder joint. In the varization and derotation model, closed-wedge osteotomy and additional derotation resulted in an unexpected extension and valgus deformity, namely, under-correction of coxa valga. After femoral derotational osteotomy, varization and extension of the distal fragment occurred, although the extension was negligible. Conclusions: Surgeons should be aware of unexpected angular deformity after surgical procedure involving bony areas. The degree of deformity differs depending on the context of the surgical procedure. However, this study reveals that notable deformities can be expected during orthopedic procedures such as femoral varization derotational osteotomy.

Background This study was performed to investigate the usefulness of clinical pathway (CP) using an electronic medical record (EMR) in pediatric patients undergoing closed pinning for supracondylar fracture of the humerus, by analyzing the length of hospital stay, hospital cost and satisfaction of the medical teams. Methods This before and after comparative study included consecutive children who underwent closed pinning for supracondylar fracture of the humerus since 2009. The pre-CP group consists of 90 patients with the mean age of 5.7 years, and the post-CP group consists of 32 patients with the mean age of 6.2 years. Multidisciplinary work-team developed CP using an EMR system in March 2011. The length of hospital stay was the primary outcome variable, and hospital cost and medical team’s satisfaction score were secondary outcome variables. The non-inferiority test was used to demonstrate the efficiency of the pathway. Results The length of hospital stay decreased from 2.9 ± 0.7 days to 2.4 ± 0.7 days by 15.0%, after the implementation of CP, and the lower bound of the 95% CI of the difference (0.14 day) was within the non-inferiority margin of −0.3 days. The hospital cost decreased from 1162.2 ± 236.7 US$ to 1139.8 ± 291.1 US$ by 1.9% and the lower bound of the 95% CI of the difference was −81.3 US$, which did not exceed the non-inferiority margin of −116.2 US$. Therefore, the post-CP group was not inferior compared with the pre-CP group in term of the length of hospital stay and total hospital cost. There was significant increase in the satisfaction score for doctors after implementation of CP (p Conclusions The development and implementation of CP, using an EMR, in pediatric patients undergoing closed pinning for supracondylar fracture of the humerus enhances the treatment efficiency by streamlining the treatment process with no increases of the length of the hospital stay and total hospital costs.
