Abstract

Southern blight, caused by Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc., is a significant disease of apple in China and many other counties. Sclerotium germination and hyphal growth are two critical processes for epidemic development. Controlled experiments were conducted to study the effects of environmental conditions on sclerotium germination and hyphal growth of the pathogen. Temperature for sclerotium germination and hyphal growth of S. rolfsii ranges from 15 to 35oC with the optimum at 31.5oC. The soil water content needs to exceed 30%, and once over this threshold, soil water content did not affect sclerotium germination and hyphal growth. The rate of sclerotium germination was high in sawdust, and hyphae grew fastest in the mixture of sawdust and soil. Sclerotium germination and hyphal growth were inhibited in nursery substrate. Hyphal growth was affected by pH but to a far lesser extent sclerotium germination. Soaking in water inhibited sclerotium germination.

Abstract

Escherichia coli has become one of the most important causes of calf diarrhea. The aim of this study is to determine the patterns of antimicrobial resistance of E. coli isolates from six cattle farms and to identify prominent resistance genes and virulence genes among the strains isolated from the diarrhea of calves. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed using the disk diffusion method, and PCR was used to detect resistance and virulence genes. The prevalence of multidrug resistant (MDR) E. coli was 77.8% in dairy cattle and 63.6% in beef cattle. There were high resistance rates to penicillin (100%, 100%) and ampicillin (96.3%, 86.4%) in E. coli from dairy cattle and beef cattle. Interestingly, resistance rate to antimicrobials and distribution of resistance genes in E. coli isolated from dairy cattle were higher than those in beef cattle. Further analysis showed that the most prevalent resistance genes were blaTEM and aadA1 in dairy cattle and beef cattle, respectively. Moreover, seven diarrheagenic virulence genes (irp2, fyuA, Stx1, eaeA, F41, K99 and STa) were present in the isolates from dairy cattle, with a prevalence ranging from 3.7% to 22.22%. Six diarrheagenic virulence genes (irp2, fyuA, Stx1, eaeA, hylA and F41) were identified in the isolates from beef cattle, with a prevalence ranging from 2.27% to 63.64%. Our results provide important evidence for better exploring their interaction mechanism. Further studies are also needed to understand the origin and transmission route of E. coli in cattle to reduce its prevalence.

Abstract

In order to avoid leakage problem caused by liquid electrolyte, a new ionogel electrolyte was developed by in situ immobilizing organosilicon-functionalized ionic liquid within a nanoporous silica matrix. The ionic liquid evenly coats on the surface of porous silica and fills in the silica framework pores with no strong chemical interaction. The ionogel electrolyte has the dual advantages of a silica solid support and a wide electrochemical stability window of ionic liquid (4.87 V vs. Li+/Li). The half-cells assembled with this electrolyte and LiFePO4 electrode have excellent performance at room temperature and 60 °C. The Li/SiO2-IGE/LiFePO4 cell displays a discharge capacity of 129.1 mAh·g−1 after 200 charge/discharge cycles at room temperature.

Abstract

This study investigates the Legislative Councilors’ perceptions of gambling expansion and responsible gambling practices in Hong Kong. Employing quota sampling strategies, fourteen councilors were recruited to attend a 30-minute semi-structured interview. The results showed that many respondents (64.3%) rejected further expansion of legalized gambling in Hong Kong. Only two interviewees explicitly supported further gambling liberalization (e.g. casino gambling or increases in horse races). While the opponents were concerned about the negative impacts associated with legalized gambling activities, the proponents emphasized the economic benefits of further gambling expansion. Factors that might have influenced the councilors’ views on gambling expansion were identified: individual gambling attitudes and past experience in gambling participation, knowledge about excessive gambling, and views on individual versus social responsibility for gambling problems. Few interviewees considered that gamblers were solely responsible for their actions, difficulties and for their problem-solving endeavors. Most agreed that both the government and gambling operators have a very important role to play in addressing problem gambling, and would like to urge these key stakeholders to minimize gambling-related harms through improving responsible gambling practices. The study results have implications for gambling legislation, policy, and research.
