The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between iron exposure and the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).A secondary analysis of the PENUT Trial dataset was conducted. The primary outcome was BPD at 36 weeks gestational age and primary exposures of interest were cumulative iron exposures in the first 28 days and through 36 weeks' gestation. Descriptive statistics were calculated for study cohort characteristics with analysis adjusted for the factors used to stratify randomization.Of the 941 patients, 821 (87.2%) survived to BPD evaluation at 36 weeks, with 332 (40.4%) diagnosed with BPD. The median cohort gestational age was 26 weeks and birth weight 810 g. In the first 28 days, 76% of infants received enteral iron and 55% parenteral iron. The median supplemental cumulative enteral and parenteral iron intakes at 28 days were 58.5 and 3.1 mg/kg, respectively, and through 36 weeks' 235.8 and 3.56 mg/kg, respectively. We found lower volume of red blood cell transfusions in the first 28 days after birth and higher enteral iron exposure in the first 28 days after birth to be associated with lower rates of BPD.We find no support for an increased risk of BPD with iron supplementation.NCT01378273. https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01378273 IMPACT: Prior studies and biologic plausibility raise the possibility that iron administration could contribute to the pathophysiology of oxidant-induced lung injury and thus bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants. For 24-27-week premature infants, this study finds no association between total cumulative enteral iron supplementation at either 28-day or 36-week postmenstrual age and the risk for developing bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

With its Vedāntic metaphysics and devotionally rich narratives, the Bhāgavata Purāṇa can provide valuable models for ecological care and preservation. Throughout the Purāṇa, we find narratives that can be harnessed in service of the environment, whether it be Kṛṣṇa battling the serpent Kāliya or Varāha lifting the Earth from the depths of the cosmic ocean. This article, however, will focus on a little-known narrative found in Book Four, namely, the Pracetās’ destruction, and eventual protection, of the Earth’s trees. The Pracetās’ narrative is significant for several reasons: (1) instead of simply venerating nature, the story demonstrates the challenge of balancing human needs and the needs of other life forms; (2) it accords agency to the Earth by giving the forest a voice within the narrative; and (3) it bridges the boundary between human beings and the natural world by building kinship relationships between them. This article will explore the ways in which Vaiṣṇava commentators have interpreted this episode as they attempt to negotiate the question: who has priority—humans or nature?

This paper discusses the particular challenges that face translators of the Bhāgavata Purāṇa, a text that is unlike any other Purāṇa, due to its use of Vedic grammar, sophisticated poetry, and obscure vocabulary. How might one find a translation method that suits the Bhāgavata? The paper explores translation as a process of vernacularization and of commentary, but finally settles on a pedagogical approach. By conceiving of translation as an act of teaching, the paper argues, the translator is best able to model the Bhāgavata’s own methods—its tightly woven narrative structure, relentlessly focused message, and dialogical style.

Background Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH)- deficient renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a newly identified rare subtype of RCC, having only gained acceptance from the World Health Organization in 2016. To the best of our knowledge, there are only 55 reported cases worldwide. Here, we report a new case of SDH-deficient RCC. Case presentation A 49-year-old male patient was incidentally found to have a large right renal mass. He had no personal or family history of paragangliomas (PGL), pheochromocytomas (PC), or gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). The neoplasm was unilateral and unifocal. He underwent an open partial nephrectomy. Detailed pathological analysis was conducted to confirm the diagnosis. Genetic testing revealed a pathogenic mutation in the SDHB gene. He has been followed for 24 months now and has remained well without any evidence of local or distant recurrence. In this report we describe our experience with this diagnosis and review the relevant clinical, pathological, and genetic features. Conclusions Without the identification of SDHB deficiency, this patient’s personal and familial predisposition to PC, PGL, GIST and metachronous RCCs may have gone undetected despite his RCC diagnosis. When faced with an eosinophilic RCC, pathologists should routinely search for vacuoles or flocculent cytoplasmic inclusions. When these are present, or in cases of difficult eosinophilic renal tumors, staining for SDHB is recommended. For tumours without adverse pathologic features (i.e. high nuclear grade, coagulative necrosis, or sarcomatoid differentiation) excision alone may be a reasonable option, with the addition of regular surveillance for PC and PGLs in those found to harbor germline SDH mutations.

Background The goal of radical prostatectomy is to achieve the optimal balance between complete cancer removal and preserving a patient’s urinary and sexual function. Performing a wider excision of peri-prostatic tissue helps achieve negative surgical margins, but can compromise urinary and sexual function. Alternatively, sparing peri-prostatic tissue to maintain functional outcomes may result in an increased risk of cancer recurrence. The objective of this study is to determine the effect of providing surgeons with detailed information about their patient outcomes through a surgical report card. Methods We propose a prospective cohort quasi-experimental study. The intervention is the provision of feedback to prostate cancer surgeons via surgical report cards. These report cards will be distributed every 3 months by email and will present surgeons with detailed information, including urinary function, erectile function, and surgical margin outcomes of their patients compared to patients treated by other de-identified surgeons in the study. For the first 12 months of the study, pre-operative, 6-month, and 12-month patient data will be collected but there will be no report cards distributed to surgeons. This will form the pre-feedback cohort. After the pre-feedback cohort has completed accrual, surgeons will receive quarterly report cards. Patients treated after the provision of report cards will comprise the post-feedback cohort. The primary comparison will be post-operative function of the pre-feedback cohort vs. post-feedback cohort. The secondary comparison will be the proportion of patients with positive surgical margins in the two cohorts. Outcomes will be stratified or case-mix adjusted, as appropriate. Assuming a baseline potency of 20% and a baseline continence of 70%, 292 patients will be required for 80% power at an alpha of 5% to detect a 10% improvement in functional outcomes. Assuming 30% of patients may be lost to follow-up, a minimum sample size of 210 patients is required in the pre-feedback cohort and 210 patients in the post-feedback cohort. Discussion The findings from this study will have an immediate impact on surgeon self-evaluation and we hypothesize surgical report cards will result in improved overall outcomes of men treated with radical prostatectomy. Silicon carbon boron nitride (SiCBN) thin films were synthesized by reactive co-sputtering of silicon carbide (SiC) and boron nitride (BN) targets. As-deposited samples show distinct photoluminescence (PL) peaks at 465, 483 and 497 nm. The films were annealed in dry oxygen ambient at different temperatures to investigate the effect of annealing on film properties. Subsequent measurements on the annealed samples show diminished PL peak intensities. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the as-deposited films are amorphous in nature and there is no change in the microstructure even after high temperature annealing. Surface characterization of the films by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals change in chemical composition at different annealing temperatures. Carbon concentrations in the films are sensitive to annealing temperatures and could cause the change in photoluminescence properties.

Nearly every theistic school since the time of Samkara has engaged with the Ved?ntic tradition, usually by writing a commentary on the Brahmas?tra. Never theless, Ved?nta found itself on uncertain ground during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, due largely to the rise of influential devotional movements across North India. Many of these movements established their influence by deliberately setting themselves apart from the Ved?ntic pursuits of earlier Vaisnava schools. They saw the emphasis on Ved?nta as the hallmark of knowledge (j?ana)-oriented systems, in contrast to their own exclusive absorption in devotion (bhakti). A good case in point is the R?dh?vallabhi school of Hita Harivamsa, which was contiguous with the Caitanya tradition both in time (sixteenth century) and location (Vrnd?vana). Followers of Hita Harivamsa distinguish themselves from other Vaisnava schools by insisting that they do not subscribe to "any general or particular philosophical standpoint" (d?rsanika matav?da), nor are they "dependent in every way on ancient bhakti texts [such as the Bh?gavata Pur?na]" (Gosvami, 1989, p. 57).1 Although love (prema) is the essence of all the Vedas, Hita Harivamsa "declared it to be beyond all schools of Ved?nta and said that the help of any Ved?ntic school was unnecessary for its establishment" (Gosvami, 1989, p. 54). In this paper, a wet chemical etching technique to selectively etch tantalum thin film in sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide based solutions was developed. Tantalum thin films were deposited by a DC-magnetron sputtering technique on silica and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates. After deposition, the films were etched in hot NaOH/ H2O2 and KOH/H2O2 based solutions with Au/Cr film as a hard mask. The etch rate was studied as a function of temperature and concentration of the etchants.

The present paper deals with the study of momentum, heat and mass transfer characteristics in a viso-elastic fluid flow over a porous sheet, where the flow is generated due to linear stretching of the sheet and influenced by a uniform magnetic field applied vertically and a continuous injection of the fluid through porous boundary. In the flow region, heat balance is maintained with a temperature dependent heat source/sink, viscous dissipation, dissipation due to elastic deformation and stress work produced as the result of magnetic field on the non-Newtonian fluid. In mass transfer analysis we have taken into account the loss of mass of the chemically reactive diffusive species by means of first order chemical conversion rate. Using suitable similarity transformations on the highly non-linear partial differential equations we derive several closed form analytical solutions for non-dimensional temperature, concentration, heat flux, mass flux profiles in the form of confluent hyper geometric (Kummer's) functions and some other elementary functions as its special form, for two different cases of the boundary conditions, namely, (i) wall with prescribed second order power law temperature (PST) and prescribed second order power law concentration (ii) wall with prescribed second order power law heat flux (PHF) and prescribed second order power law mass flux. The effect of the non-dimensional magnetic parameter on momentum, heat and mass transfer characteristics for non-isothermal boundary condition and different physical situations of the fluid, having various degrees of visco-elasticity, Prandtl number, heat source/sink strength and Schmidt number, are discussed in detail. Some of the several important findings reported in this paper are: (i) The combined effect of magnetic field, visco-elasticity and impermeability of the wall is to increase skin-friction largely at the wall; (ii) maximum enhancement of wall-temperature profile due to the application of transverse magnetic field occurs when the boundary heating is maintained with prescribed heat flux, boundary wall is porous and Prandtl number of the fluid is low; (iii) the effect of transverse uniform magnetic field is to increase concentration in the flow region, however, enhancement of concentration is higher when the stretching wall is porous and subjected to injection and (iv) the reduction of concentration due to chemical conversion is of significant order near the wall in PHF case when the wall is maintained with prescribed power low mass flux, in comparison with the PST case when the wall is maintained with prescribed power law surface concentration.

A phenomenological framework has been developed to account for interfacial instabilities during epitaxial growth. It is proposed that these instabilities are influenced by surface phenomena, through modification of surface free energy of the substrate by the first monolayers of the depositing element. Instabilities occuring in the CoSi2/Si system are considered as an example. Specifically, Gjostein’s (1963) treatment of surface instabilities caused by an adsorbing gas is applied here, and instability criteria are derived in terms of the Herring construction (Herring, 1951).
