Abstract

While public opinion in the capitalist West continues to exhibit an overwhelming confidence in the diversity and vitality of bourgeois culture, critical theorists, from Herbert Marcuse to Fredric Jameson, have stressed the shallowness, one-dimensionality, and alienating effects of the "harmonious pluralism" of Western culture. Implicit or explicit in such critiques has been the inference that an alternative social system, specifically socialism, offers at least the potential of generating a more authentic and enriching culture. Cuban musical culture since 1959 would seem to provide as inspiring a model of cultural vitality and heterogeneity as can be found in any socialist society, especially given the censorship, dogmatism, and stagnation that have plagued the arts in so many communist countries. This article endeavors to explore the ideology of Cuban cultural pluralism with regard to music, and the ways in which heterogeneous art forms are accommodated into the fabric of Cuban Marxism. The development of music in Cuba since 1959 can be seen as the lively interaction of inherited traditions and trends, external in? fluences, and the changes wrought by the Cuban Revolution itself. These changes include both the direct impact of cultural policy (as practiced and as articulated) and, in a more general sense, the ways in which the creation of a new and different social, economic, and political milieu has influenced music. The musical developments shaped by these processes include not only overt, concrete trends (e.g., nationalization of the music industry) but also the more subjective changes in the ways that music is perceived by a population conditioned by three decades of communism. The study of modern Cuban cultural policy and attitudes as they pertain to music can serve to deepen our understanding of the impact of the Cuban Revolution as a whole. While music genres such as nueva trova that have evolved since 1959 clearly reflect certain recent developments, a different sort of insight may be gained by the study of the role played by pre-Revolutionary musics in modern Cuba. The function of such genres as Afro-Cuban cult music and European classical music raises questions of musical meaning and the extent to which it is conditioned by social context. Pursuing such
