Hydrogels were produced from mixtures of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), and acrylic acid (AAc) using γ-radiation at doses of 3, 7, and 10 kGy and the effect of the variation in concentration of AAc within 0%–3% (w/v) on the gelation, swelling, crosslinking, thermal properties, crystallinity, mechanical properties, and surface morphology of the hydrogels were characterized and their adsorptive removal properties for methylene blue (MB) was investigated. The swelling trend was pH-dependent which was dictated by the dominance of two competing factors namely, crosslink density and hydrophilicity. Although thermal analysis showed that the presence of AAc decreased the thermal stability of the hydrogels, SEM images exhibited gradual morphological changes establishing the role of AAc as a crosslinker, and thus increasing the elastic moduli, toughness, and crystallinity of the hydrogels. However, correlation between the characterization results revealed that, in spite of AAc occupying some of the crosslinking sites within PVA–PVP networks, at low concentration (1% w/v), it could not polymerize enough to contribute to the crosslinks. FTIR spectral analysis revealed a possible gelation mechanism along with the points of interaction among the gel-components. MB adsorption capacity of the hydrogels reached a maximum of 117 mg/g following pseudo-second-order kinetics through film diffusion mechanism while the adsorption isotherm resembled most with that of Langmuir.

Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) is rising at a rapid rate worldwide. As a chronic, incurable metabolic disease, diabetes affects a person’s life in all ways. Studies thus far have focused on the impact of diabetes on the physical and mental health of persons affected by the quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to explore the whole range of QoL deficits using the World Health Organization Quality of Life brief version (WHOQOL-BREF) in type-2 diabetic patients. Methods This cross-sectional study was carried out among individuals aged at or above 15 years with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Patients with prior mental health illness and unwillingness to give consent were excluded. A pretested structured questionnaire including the 26-item WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire was used for face-to-face interviews. Appropriate ethical measures were ensured. All statistical analyses were carried out using the statistical software STATA (Version 16.1). Graphs were created using R (Version 4.0.0). Results A total of 500 T2 DM patients with a mean age of 55.8 ± 13.2 years (± SD) and a female proportion of 50.8% were included. Overall, 22.2% of participants rated their QoL as poor, and 25% were dissatisfied with their health (as assessed by questions 1 and 2 of the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire). More than half (54% and 51.2%, respectively) had an average evaluation of their QoL and health. The QoL scores were below average, with mean scores (± SD) for the physical health, psychological, social relationship, and environmental domains of 37.2 ± 20.5, 44.2 ± 21.0, 39.6 ± 23.2, and 41.6 ± 19.5, respectively. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the patient’s level of education and monthly family income were significant positive modifiers and that complications (nephropathy, retinopathy, and peripheral artery disease) were significant negative determinants of the QoL score in different domains. Conclusion This study found the overall quality of life among T2DM patients below average. Health authorities and clinicians should take these findings into account and incorporate necessary measures to ameliorate negative modifiers of the quality of life of sufferers.

Trace metals contamination is ubiquitous in the riverine environments of Bangladesh. Trace metals contamination is increasing rapidly in Dhaleshwari River due to rapid urbanization and industrialization along the riverbank, especially after the establishment of the Tannery Industrial Estate at Savar in Dhaka District. As a result, aquatic ecosystems, including fish and prawn species of the river, are contaminated by various trace and toxic metals. We examined the concentrations of 10 trace metals (Cr, Fe, Zn, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, As, Hg, and Pb) in 20 different fish and prawn species (n = 41) which are commonly found in the Dhaleshwari River using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) method. The potential human health risks (noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic) of the trace metals were calculated by using Target Hazard Quotient (THQ), Hazard Index (HI), and Target Cancer Risk (TR) indices. The mean concentration (mg/kg; ww) of the trace metals in analyzed riverine fish and prawn species was in the order of Fe > Zn > Cu > Cr > Mn > Co > Hg > Ni > Pb > As. The highest concentration of Fe (74.67 mg/kg) and Cr (4.64 mg/kg) was found in Mystus bleekeri, whereas Zn (38.89 mg/kg) and Cu (17.47 mg/kg) were found in Rohtee cotio and Glossogobius guiris, respectively. The target hazard quotient (THQ) values were less than 1 (no detrimental health effects) for all the specific metals in most of the species except M. bleekeri (1.61), G. guiris (1.29), Corica soborna (1.28) for Cr, and Macrobrachium malcolmsonii (1.19) for Hg indicate that the noncarcinogenic health risk to humans by consuming those species was relatively low. However, nine out of twenty species found higher Hazard Index (HI) values than the recommended value (HI = 1), indicating that regular consumption of these fishes may have considerable harmful effects on human health. The highest HI value (2.85) was found in M. bleekeri. Moreover, target cancer risk (TR) values showed that frequent intake of some species for prolonged periods might pose a carcinogenic risk due to Cr and Ni contamination as they were higher than the maximum accepted value of 10−4. Based on the present study, it is imperative to take an urgent initiative to control or prevent the trace metals contamination in the Dhaleshwari River and minimize the human health risks associated with the consumption of fish and prawn species in this river in Bangladesh.

5. Structural and physical properties of NbO2 and Nb2O5 thin films prepared by magnetron sputtering

NbOx thin films have been deposited on silicon (100) and quartz substrates by magnetron sputtering using a metallic Nb target in an optimized argon–oxygen atmosphere. This work investigates the dependence of structure–property relations on the key deposition parameters towards establishing optimum deposition conditions for the growth of NbOx polycrystalline films. It is found that a sputtering condition corresponding to DC power density 9.87 W cm−2, a substrate temperature of 720 °C, low gas pressures of 8 mtorr, a target to substrate distance of 45 mm gives thin films with good homogeneity and a high degree of crystallinity in the case of both NbO2 and Nb2O5. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the tetragonal phase of NbO2 and orthorhombic phase of Nb2O5 for similar deposition temperatures. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations indicate that NbO2 has a unique nanoslice structure while Nb2O5 has a flake-like structure. The optical transmittance of the films has been investigated and found to be dependent on the oxygen gas content during deposition; the optical transmittance decreases with increasing O2 gas content. Optical constants of the films were calculated by fitting a suitable thin film transmittance model to experimental transmittance spectra using a modified Swanepoel technique. The nanohardness and stress in the films were measured by nanoindentation and an optical profilometer respectively. Nanohardness and stress in the film show no large dependence on the oxygen gas content except at high oxygen gas content. The nanohardness value of NbO2 films is approximately 6 GPa, and the Young’s modulus is 150 GPa. The Nb2O5 films exhibit a nanohardness of 5.8–13 GPa and a Young’s modulus of 137–161 GPa.

Introduction: Primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) is a chronic autoimmune disease with complex etiopathogenesis. Despite extensive studies to understand the disease process utilizing human and mouse models, the intersection between these species remains elusive. To address this gap, we utilized a novel systems biology approach to identify disease-related gene modules and signaling pathways that overlap between humans and mice.Methods: Parotid gland tissues were harvested from 24 pSS and 16 non-pSS sicca patients and 25 controls. For mouse studies, salivary glands were harvested from C57BL/6.NOD-Aec1Aec2 mice at various times during development of pSS-like disease. RNA was analyzed with Affymetrix HG U133+2.0 arrays for human samples and with MOE430+2.0 arrays for mouse samples. The images were processed with Affymetrix software. Weighted-gene co-expression network analysis was used to identify disease-related and functional pathways.Results: Nineteen co-expression modules were identified in human parotid tissue, of which four were significantly upregulated and three were downregulated in pSS patients compared with non-pSS sicca patients and controls. Notably, one of the human disease-related modules was highly preserved in the mouse model, and was enriched with genes involved in immune and inflammatory responses. Further comparison between these two species led to the identification of genes associated with leukocyte recruitment and germinal center formation.Conclusion: Our systems biology analysis of genome-wide expression data from salivary gland tissue of pSS patients and from a pSS mouse model identified common dysregulated biological pathways and molecular targets underlying critical molecular alterations in pSS pathogenesis.
