Oocyte death is a severe clinical phenotype that causes female infertility and recurrent in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection failure. We aimed to identify pathogenic variants in a female infertility patient with oocyte death phenotype.Sanger sequencing was performed to screen PANX1 variants in the affected patient. Western blot analysis was used to check the effect of the variant on PANX1 glycosylation pattern in vitro.We identified a novel PANX1 variant (NM_015368.4 c.86G A, (p. Arg29Gln)) associated with the phenotype of oocyte death in a non-consanguineous family. This variant displayed an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern with reduced penetrance. Western blot analysis confirmed that the missense mutation of PANX1 (c.86G A) altered the glycosylation pattern in HeLa cells. Moreover, the mutation effects on the function of PANX1 were weaker than recently reported variants.Our findings expand the inheritance pattern of PANX1 variants to an autosomal dominant mode with reduced penetrance and enrich the variational spectrum of PANX1. These results help us to better understand the genetic basis of female infertility with oocyte death.

This study systematically investigated the relationship between the structure properties and biological characteristics of DON in the effluents from municipal wastewater treatment plants. Ultrafiltration, FTIR spectroscopy, UV spectroscopy and EEM fluorescence spectroscopy were used to characterize the structure of organic matters in the effluent samples, and the bioavailability of DON was determined by algal/bacterial based bioassay. The quantitatively analysis of EEM spectra conducted by fluorescence regional integration method showed that the organic portion of all samples were mainly consistent with fulvic acid and protein. Combined with the bioassay results, a positive correlation between the DON bioavailability and the protein content (sum of region I and region II) (r=0.80, P＜0.02) and soluble microbial byproduct-like materials (region IV) (r=0.76, P＜0.03) were observed. Nevertheless, the humic substances content represented by the region III and V would negatively affect the DON bioavailability. High humification degree (high HIX value) (r=-0.77, P＜0.03) was related to low bioavailability. Furthermore, according to UV spectroscopy results, strong aromaticity (high UV254 values) (r=-0.78, P＜0.03) suggested low DON bioavailability. The ultrafiltration experiment showed that the low molecular weight DON (＜3kDa) accounted for 30-73% of the total DON, and no notable relationship was observed for DON molecular weight and its bioavailability.

Background Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) is a leading cause of malignancy-related deaths worldwide, and the efficacy of immunotherapy on PAAD is limited. Studies report that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an important role in modulating genomic instability and immunotherapy. However, the identification of genome instability-related lncRNAs and their clinical significance has not been investigated in PAAD. Methods The current study developed a computational framework for mutation hypothesis based on lncRNA expression profile and somatic mutation spectrum in pancreatic adenocarcinoma genome. We explored the potential of GInLncRNAs(genome instability-related lncRNAs) through co-expression analysis and function enrichment analysis. We further analyzed GInLncRNAs by Cox regression and used the results to construct a prognostic lncRNA signature. Finally, we analyzed the relationship between GILncSig (genomic instability derived 3-lncRNA signature) and immunotherapy. Results A GILncSig was developed using bioinformatics analyses. It could divide patients into high-risk and low-risk groups, and there was a significant difference in OS between the two groups. In addition, GILncSig was associated with genome mutation rate in pancreatic adenocarcinoma, indicating its potential value as a marker for genomic instability. The GILncSig accurately grouped wild type patients of KRAS into two risk groups. The prognosis of the low-risk group was significantly improved. GILncSig was significantly correlated with the level of immune cell infiltration and immune checkpoint. Conclusions In summary, the current study provides a basis for further studies on the role of lncRNA in genomic instability and immunotherapy. The study provides a novel method for identification of cancer biomarkers related to genomic instability and immunotherapy.

Migraine is a common headache disorder. Many studies have used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to explore the possible pathogenesis of migraine, but they have not reached consistent conclusions and lack rigorous multiple comparison correction. Thus, this study investigates the mechanisms of migraine development from the perspective of altered functional connectivity (FC) in brain regions by using data-driven and regions of interest (ROI)-based approaches.Resting-state functional MRI data were collected from 30 patients with migraine and 40 healthy controls (HCs) matched for age, gender, and years of education. For the data-driven method, we used a voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) approach to compare the FC between the patients and HCs. For the ROI-based method, significant differences in VMHC maps between the patients and HCs were defined as ROI. The seed-based approach further revealed significant differences in FC between the seeds and the other brain regions. Furthermore, the correlations between abnormal FC and clinical characteristics of patients were investigated. A rigorous multiple comparison correction was used with false discovery rate and permutation test (5000 times).In comparison with the controls group, patients showed enhanced VMHC in the bilateral thalamus. We also observed enhanced FC between the left thalamus and the left superior frontal gyrus, and increased FC between the right thalamus and the left middle frontal gyrus (Brodmann area 45 and Brodmann area 8) in patients. Further analysis showed that the FC values in the left superior frontal gyrus and left middle frontal gyrus were negatively corrected with visual analogue scale scores or attack times for headaches.Patients with migraine showed altered VMHC in the bilateral thalamus, and abnormal FC of bilateral thalamus and other brain regions. Inter-basin water transfer projects are powerful measures for resolving the uneven distribution of water resources, but their scale directly affects the associated investment and income. Therefore, determining the scale of an inter-basin water transfer project is essential. Based on the inter-basin agricultural water transfer project in the Sanjiang Plain, Northeast China, combined with the suitable development scale of the irrigation area with the joint allocation of existing water sources, this research proposes a technique to demonstrate the scale of an inter-basin water transfer project based on dynamic trial feedback under the condition of the optimization method of despiking of the groundwater allocation; the water transfer project scale is demonstrated for each section in reverse order. According to the water demand prediction results in the study area, the scale of water transfer project BC is demonstrated, and the scale of water transfer project AB is demonstrated on the basis of the BC scale. The final AB and BC water transfer scales decrease by 15% and 13%, respectively, compared with the conventional method under the premise that the water supply guarantee rate is 75%. When the water is transferred, the process is stable, and the utilization rate of the canal is high, thereby saving investment funds and facilitating project scheduling and management.

This study develops a conceptual framework that provides a broad understanding of financial well-being. Using the 2018 National Financial Capability Study and structural equation modeling methods, this study provides empirical evidence for the proposed framework by identifying significant direct and indirect determinants of financial well-being. Previous personal financial wellness and financial satisfaction-related research provides a theoretical rationale for the construction of the conceptual framework in the current study. The results reported the relationships among these determinants, including financial perceptions and knowledge factors, financial stress, short- and long-term positive financial behavior, and financial satisfaction. The findings indicate that financial satisfaction, short-term financial behavior, perceived financial capability showed positive and direct associations with financial well-being, whereas financial stress and long-term financial behavior were negatively and directly associated with financial well-being. Financial perception and knowledge factors, financial stress, and short-term financial behavior also showed significant indirect relationships with financial well-being. The findings of this study contribute to the literature on financial well-being and provide significant policy and practical implications. Implications for financial practitioners and policy makers are discussed.

Background The early diagnosis of sepsis is beneficial to put forward a reasonable clinical treatment plan as soon as possible. This study was to explore the expression of Tripartite Motif 7 (TRIM7) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with sepsis and its diagnostic value. Methods This is a cross-sectional study. A total of 69 patients with infectious diseases were enrolled in the emergency room. They were divided into the sepsis group (34 cases) and the non-sepsis infection group (35 cases). There were 25 healthy subjects who were selected as the control group. The expression of TRIM7 in PBMCs was observed by immunofluorescence staining. The correlation between the expression of TRIM7 mRNA and acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE II) score, sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score, white blood cell (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6 was discussed. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was utilized for evaluating the value of TRIM7 expression for the early diagnosis of sepsis. Results The fluorescence intensity representing the expression level of TRIM7 in PBMCs of patients in the sepsis group was the lowest among three groups. The TRIM7 mRNA expression in PBMCs of the sepsis group was greatly decreased in comparison with that of the non-sepsis infection group and control group (P Conclusion The expression of TRIM7 in PBMCs of patients with sepsis is significantly down-regulated, which has certain clinical value for early diagnosis of sepsis.

Background Occupational exposure to blood and body fluids poses a threat to medical providers and to nurses especially. This harm is not only physical, but psychology as well and can ultimately impact patient safety. This study aims to understand the prevalence of occupational exposure to blood and body fluids among Chinese registered nurses and explores the factors that influence this exposure. Methods A cross-sectional online survey was conducted for 31 province-level divisions in China, using a self-created questionnaire entitled Status Survey on Occupational Exposure in Nurses. Descriptive statistics were used to describe both the demographic characteristics of the respondents and the characteristics of occupational exposure. Categorical variables were presented as frequencies and percentage, and the relationship between possible influential factors and the occurrence of occupational exposure was determined using binary logistic regression. Results Out of a total of 20,791 nurses analyzed, over half (52.1%) of them had experienced occupational exposure to blood or body fluids, but over 1/3 (34.6%) of them did not ever report their exposures to a supervisor/official. The top three causes of under-reporting were: the source patient failed to test positive for infectious pathogens (43.6%), perception of a burdensome reporting process (24.6%), and indifferent attitude towards being infected (16.9%). Nurses who worked over 8 hours per day had higher risks of exposure (OR 1.199, 95% CI 1.130 to 1.272, P P P Conclusions Occupational exposure to blood and body fluids in registered nurses is common, but the rate of under-reporting such exposure is high. Implementing engineered “sharp” injury prevention devices, following exposure prevention procedures, giving sufficient education and training to healthcare personnel on exposure prevention and control, and developing exposure reporting policies are all steps that can both reduce exposure and increase its reporting.

This study used data from the 2018 National Financial Capability Study to investigate the association between financial hardship and retirement planning behaviors. Results from logistic regressions showed that respondents with high difficulty making ends meet were more likely to calculate retirement needs and more likely to own a non-employer sponsored retirement plan. The perceived over-indebtedness was positively associated with owning an employer-sponsored account while negatively associated with owning a non-employer-sponsored account. Financial fragility was associated with a lower likelihood of calculating retirement needs and having a retirement account. The results of additional generational analyses revealed that the difficulty making ends meet and the perceived over-indebtedness showed different patterns with retirement planning behavior across three generations. In contrast, financial fragility showed consistent and negative associations with the retirement planning behaviors across generations.

Background Prokaryote-virus interactions play key roles in driving biogeochemical cycles. However, little is known about the drivers shaping their interaction network structures, especially from the host features. Here, we compiled 7656 species-level genomes in 39 prokaryotic phyla across environments globally and explored how their interaction specialization is constrained by host life history traits, such as growth rate. Results We first reported that host growth rate indicated by the reverse of minimal doubling time was negatively related to interaction specialization for host in host-provirus network across various ecosystems and taxonomy groups. Such a negative linear growth rate-specialization relationship (GrSR) was dependent on host optimal growth temperature (OGT), and stronger toward the two gradient ends of OGT. For instance, prokaryotic species with an OGT ≥ 40 °C showed a stronger GrSR (Pearson’s r = −0.525, P < 0.001). Significant GrSRs were observed with the presences of host genes in promoting the infection cycle at stages of adsorption, establishment, and viral release, but nonsignificant with the presence of immune systems, such as restriction-modification systems and CRISPR-Cas systems. Moreover, GrSR strength was increased with the presence of temperature-dependent lytic switches, which was also confirmed by mathematical modeling. Conclusions Together, our results advance our understanding of the interactions between prokaryotes and proviruses and highlight the importance of host growth rate in interaction specialization during lysogenization.

This study examines the relationships among personality traits, financial responsibility, perceived financial capability, and subjective well-being for young adults. Using an integrated approach and a theoretically grounded conceptual framework, a structural model is constructed. This study uses the 2015 Transition into Adulthood Supplemental dataset. The results show that (1) perceived financial capability and personality traits were significantly associated with subjective well-being, (2) financial responsibility, extroversion, conscientiousness, and neuroticism personality traits were associated with perceived financial capability, and (3) extroversion, conscientiousness, and neuroticism were significantly associated with financial responsibility. The same structural model is tested with two racial groups. This additional analysis shows differences in the proposed relationships between non-Hispanic Black and White young respondents. The findings provide a better understanding of the racial differences in the roles played by personality traits, financial responsibility, and perceived financial capability in the subjective well-being of young adults. Implications for researchers, financial counselors, and educators working with young adults are included.

Rectus abdominis diastasis is a common pathology and an esthetic and symptomatic problem; its reconstruction, either through a surgical strategy, standard vertical plication, or endoscopic surgery with or without mesh or through non-surgical physical training, is under debate. This study further aimed to compare the results of surgery and non-surgery interventions in cases with rectus abdominis diastasis. A systematic literature search of PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library databases from the earliest data available to November 2018 was performed. Studies assessing symptomatic relief, adverse events, or symptomatic recurrence after surgery or a physical training program were included. A modified Downs and Black checklist for randomized and non-randomized studies of healthcare interventions was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the studies. Of 3908 citations, there were 27 studies with a total of 2372 patients finally being included in this study. In the surgery group, there was no patient relapsed after a follow-up of 12 months, while a 40% recurrence rate was reported after a follow-up of 5 years in one study. The adverse events associated with surgery mainly included seroma (5.13%), a sensibility disorder of the abdominal skin (2.26%), and minor scarring (1.56%). There were no adverse events or reports of recurrence in patients with physical training; however, negative effects of improving rectus muscle function were reported in 4 studies (40%). In conclusion, this review found a limited strength of evidence that abdominoplasty and diastasis recti repair were effective at restoring the functions of the rectus muscles and at improving the stability of the abdominal wall and quality of life in the short-term. A moderate strength of evidence was found that strength training has a limited effect, especially for patients suffering from rectus abdominis diastasis combined with a hernia.

Background Mucus production is a process involved in the pathogenesis of Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). The study is to determine Mucin 5B (MUC5B) protein concentration and its proportion in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of CAP patients and evaluate its value to help assess disease severity. Methods A total of 118 patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study, including 45 with severe CAP (SCAP) and 73 with non-severe CAP (NSCAP). MUC5B concentration in BALF were determined by immunoblotting analysis. Total protein concentration of BALF was detected by Pierce BCA kit. Cytokines IL6, IL10, IFNγ, IL13, and IL17 in BALF were measured using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Spearman’s correlation analysis was applied to evaluate the relationships between MUC5B concentration or MUC5B/total protein ratio and the CURB-65 score, as well as cytokines. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the independent factors associated with severe CAP. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the assessment value of MUC5B/total protein ratio and other indexes for CAP severity. Results MUC5B concentration in the BALF of NSCAP group was higher than that in SCAP group [NSCAP 13.56 µg/ml (IQR 5.92–25.79) vs. SCAP 8.20 µg/ml (IQR 4.97–14.03), p = 0.011]. The total protein concentration in the BALF of NSCAP group was lower than that in SCAP group [NSCAP 0.38 mg/ml (IQR 0.15–1.10) vs. SCAP 0.68 mg/ml (IQR 0.46–1.69), p = 0.002]. The MUC5B/total protein ratio was remarkably higher in NSCAP group than that in SCAP groups [NSCAP 3.66% (IQR 1.50–5.56%) vs. SCAP 1.38% (IQR 0.73–1.76%), p s = − 0.576, p s = − 0.312, p = 0.001), IL10 (rs = − 0.228, p = 0.013), IL13 (rs = − 0.183, p = 0.048), IL17 (rs = − 0.282, p = 0.002) and CURB-65 score (rs = − 0.239, p = 0.009). Logistic regression identified that MUC5B/total protein ratio, IL6 level and CURB-65 score as independent variables related to CAP severity. ROC curve demonstrated best assessment value of MUC5B/total protein ratio for SCAP (AUC 0.803, p Conclusions Respiratory MUC5B disproportion is related to CAP severity. MUC5B/total protein ratio may serve as an assessment marker and a potential therapeutic target for severe CAP.

Purpose To study the relationship between blastomere number and pregnancy outcomes of day 3 embryo transfers. Methods This retrospective cohort study included 2237 fresh single day 3 embryo transfer cycles from October 2013 to November 2020. Patients were divided into six groups according to the blastomere number on day 3: ≤ 6-cell (n = 100), 7-cell (n = 207), 8-cell (n = 1522), 9-cell (n = 187), 10-cell (n = 91) and ≥ 11-cell (n = 130). Generalized estimating equation analysis based on multivariate logistic regression model was performed to adjust for potential confounders. Results The live birth rate (LBR) was 19.0%, 27.1%, 38.9%, 32.1%, 44.0% and 53.8% for the ≤ 6-cell, 7-cell, 8-cell, 9-cell, 10-cell and ≥ 11-cell groups, respectively (P P = 0.013). Conversely, the odds of live birth were significantly increased in patients transferred with 10-cell embryos (aOR 1.62, 95% CI 1.03–2.53; P = 0.035) and ≥ 11-cell embryos (aOR 2.14, 95% CI 1.47–3.11; P Conclusion Increased blastomere number was associated with higher LBR in fresh single day 3 embryo transfer cycles. This finding questions the consensus on the reduced developmental potential of fast-cleaving embryos. Further large prospective studies are warranted for confirmation.

This study provides a review of papers published on Asian families and consumers in the Journal of Family and Economic Issues over the previous decade (2010–2019). A meta-analysis of the published papers reveals that there were 34 research papers published across 5 themes including consumer behavior, family relations, health and well-being, household finance, and other economic issues. Twenty-four of these papers were published during 2010–2014, and the remaining 10 were published during 2015–2019. Most papers were published on the theme of consumer behavior and most citations were also received on papers published on the consumer behavior theme. However, more recently published papers on Asian families and consumers during the second half of the previous decade (2015–2019) have focused on the themes of household finance, family relations, and health and well-being. As Asian societies continue to transform with rapid economic growth and development across Asia, future research directions on Asian families and consumers are proposed on the following three perspectives: 1) longitudinal studies to investigate various issues related to Asian families and consumers across time, 2) a greater focus on rural families and consumers across Asia, and 3) topics of income inequality and access to goods and services and its impacts on lower-income families.

The purpose of this study is to construct a conceptual framework and examine the relationships between perceived financial capability, financial stressors, financial advice-seeking behavior, and short-and long-term financial behaviors. Furthermore, this study examines whether there exists an age difference in these relationships. Using the 2012 National Financial Capability Study, this paper suggests that perceived financial capability is positively associated with advice-seeking behavior, and short- and long-term desired financial behaviors. Further, financial stressors are negatively associated with financial behaviors, but positively associated with financial advice-seeking behavior. Seeking professional advice is positively associated with short- and long-term financial behavior and mediates the relationship between financial stressors and financial behaviors. A positive association is observed between short-term and long-term financial practice. Moreover, socio-demographic characteristics are also examined, including observations about age differences in the proposed relationships. Implications for consumers, financial practitioners, and policymakers are also discussed.

Whether pre-intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) provides any extra benefits to mechanical thrombectomy (MT) remains controversial. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare MT with pre-IVT (IVT + MT) and MT without pre-IVT (MT) for acute ischemic stroke of large vessel occlusion. We systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library to identify studies comparing outcomes between IVT + MT and MT from inception to Jan 24, 2019. Random effects mode was used to pool relative risk (RR) with confidence intervals (CI) to compare functional independence in terms of modified Rankin Scale (mRS) 0–2, favorable outcome (mRS 0–1) and mortality at three-months, symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage, successful reperfusion, and complete reperfusion between the two treatments groups. We included 30 studies enrolling 8970 patients with acute ischemic stroke of large vessel occlusion. The incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has increased recently worldwide with a subsequent occurrence of the associated adverse pregnancy outcomes. The objective of this study was to estimate the association between women with GDM and adverse pregnancy outcomes based on a cohort study and an integrated meta-analysis. A retrospective cohort of 15,097 pregnant women (1718 GDM with 13,379 non-GDM controls) who delivered at two affiliated medical centers of Nantong University from Jan. 1, 2014 to Sep. 30, 2015, was conducted. Then, a meta-analysis was performed to explore and compare adverse pregnancy outcomes between GDM and non-GDM women. In our cohort study, women with GDM were at significantly greater risk for cesarean section [crude relative risk (RR): 2.20, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.97–2.44], macrosomia (crude RR: 2.36, 95% CI: 2.04–2.74) and large for gestational age (LGA) (crude RR: 2.03, 95% CI: 1.81–2.27), and a lower risk of low birth weight (LBW) (crude RR: 0.64, 95% CI: 0.47–0.86) and small for gestational age (SGA) (crude RR: 0.60, 95% CI: 0.45–0.80) than GDM-free women. However, the preterm birth incidence was not associated with GDM [crude RR: 1.08, 95% CI: 0.91–1.29]. Similarly, the meta-analysis including our cohort study also showed a significant association between GDM and preterm birth (pooled RR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.26–1.48). Women with GDM still have an increased incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes, which indicated that early prevention and clinical treatment of disease should be enhanced.

The efficacy and safety of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for M2 segment occlusion of middle cerebral artery in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) was investigated. We searched PubMed and EMBASE from inception to 16 April 2019 for relevant studies, calculated the pool relative risks (RRs) of 3-month functional independence (modified Rankin scale score 0–2), death and symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) in MT for M2 segment occlusion in patients with AIS versus those of M1 segment or best medical care. Nine studies enrolling 2152 patients compared MT for patients with AIS of M2 segment occlusion and those of M1 segment occlusion. Chronic or non-communicable diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide; they usually result in long-term illnesses and demand long-term care. Despite advances in molecular therapeutics, specific biomarkers and targets for the treatment of these diseases are required. The dysregulation of de novo lipogenesis has been found to play an essential role in cell metabolism and is associated with the development and progression of many chronic diseases; this confirms the link between obesity and various chronic diseases. The main enzyme in this pathway-ATP-citrate lyase (ACLY), a lipogenic enzyme-catalyzes the critical reaction linking cellular glucose catabolism and lipogenesis. Increasing lines of evidence suggest that the modulation of ACLY expression correlates with the development and progressions of various chronic diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, inflammation, and cancer. Recent studies suggest that the inhibition of ACLY activity modulates the glycolysis and lipogenesis processes and stimulates normal physiological functions. This comprehensive review aimed to critically evaluate the role of ACLY in the development and progression of different diseases and the effects of its downregulation in the prevention and treatment of these diseases.

Reconstruction of the desert paleoclimate is important to understand the mechanisms that triggered and/or enhanced climate change. Through optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, grain size, magnetic susceptibility, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and geochemical indicators, we provide a well-dated record of a sedimentary outcrop on the southeast margin of the Bardain Jaran Desert, Northwest China, during the last glacial period. Four Qz-OSL ages are obtained, 41.0±34 ka, 54.7±4.4 ka, 59.5±5.0 ka and 66.8±5.8 ka, corresponding to the depths of 35 cm, 70 cm, 150 cm and 200 cm respectively. Indicators like grain size, clay content, magnetic susceptibility, XRD and geochemical index (e.g. Sr, Ba, Sr/Ca) jointly indicate abrupt climate changes at the depth of 35 cm (age, ca. 41.0 ka) and 200 cm (age, ca. 67 ka). Namely, the 280 cm sedimentary outcrop perfectly records a warm wet climate stage, corresponding to the late Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 4 to the early MIS 3. Besides, there is a trend of grain size increase after around 40 ka BP, which is most likely a signal of wind strength change. Our research supports that enhancing Siberian High pressure system during the late MIS 3 played a key role in NW East Asia climate evolution.

The early history of life harbours many unresolved evolutionary questions, none more important than the genomic origin and cellular evolution of eukaryotes. An issue central to eukaryote origin concerns the position of eukaryotes in the tree of life and the relationship of the host lineage that acquired the mitochondrion some two billion years ago to lineages of modern-day archaea. Recent analyses indicate that the host lineage branches within the Archaea, prompting the search for novel archaeal lineages that can improve our understanding of the cellular evolution of eukaryotes. Here we give a brief review of the studies on Archaea, the tree of life and the cellular evolution of eukaryotes, which is followed by an overview of recent progress fueled by new genomic technologies and recent status of archaeal research in China. Future directions for the study of early evolution are considered.
