Tectonics imparts a first-order control on the overall morphology of alluvial fan systems in extensional settings by influencing sediment flux and accommodation space, while other factors such as climate, catchment lithology, and fault footwall characteristics are secondary. Previous alluvial fan modeling studies have focused on the link between the three-dimensional development of alluvial fans and rock uplift, however, despite the potential influence of tectonics on the overall three-dimensional morphology of alluvial fans, the controlling mechanisms, as well as their relative importance, remain largely unquantified in a natural setting with a targeted source-to-sink approach. Here, we examine 45 alluvial fans and their catchments along the southern mountain front of the Aydın Range, delimited by segmented normal faults in the western Anatolia Extensional Province, to quantify the role of rock uplift. We quantify river incision rates and catchment-wide erosion rates together with a series of topographic analyses across the southern flank of the Aydın Range as a proxy for rock uplift. Our results indicate that the spatial distribution of thicker and steeper alluvial fans fit well with higher rock uplift rates along the strike of the mountain front. In contrast, a lower uplift rate is responsible for prograding alluvial fans with decreasing thickness and gradients. Also, our data shows that alluvial fan thickness compared to other alluvial fan metrics strongly associated with the pattern of the rock uplift. This study demonstrates a field-based, quantitative linkage between three-dimensional alluvial fan morphology and rock uplift which has significant implications for improving alluvial fan models and understanding how alluvial fans respond to tectonics in extensional regions.

Terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN) exposure dating of boulders is frequently used for rockslide chronology. A well-recognized source of error that cannot be readily quantified is related to inheritance of TCN produced in the rock prior to failure. The effect of inheritance is not constant and will be greatest in the instance of a very recent shallow failure on a high-altitude surface with low event frequencies. We illustrate the effect by measuring 10Be concentrations in six boulders exposed for only 9 years before sampling, on a rock avalanche in Puerto Aysen, Chile. Their apparent exposure ages range from 216 ± 76 to 1755 ± 436 years. The mean apparent exposure age of a statistical cluster of three samples exceeds the real exposure time by 345 ± 36 years (3800%), implying that all sampled rock surfaces experienced pre-failure TCN production. A reconstructed pre-failure topography enables the analysis of possible pre-failure boulder positions and an estimate of the range of possible inherited concentrations along a 2D transect. Despite a maximum failure-mass thickness of 110 m, the boulders seem to have originated from depths shallower than 14 m. Because of the likelihood that large boulders, prioritized for TCN sampling, originate from relatively shallow pre-failure depths owing to surface-near transport with minor turbation, it is necessary to consider potentially inherited TCN concentrations and their effect on the age determination, especially in cases of young rockslides, where the commonly adjusted effects of boulder erosion and snow, ash, or vegetation shielding are negligible in comparison.

This paper presents the results of a combined study, using cosmogenic 36Cl exposure dating and terrestrial digital photogrammetry of the Palliser Rockslide located in the southeastern Canadian Rocky Mountains. This site is particularly well-suited to demonstrate how this multi-disciplinary approach can be used to differentiate distinct rocksliding events, estimate their volume, and establish their chronology and recurrence interval. Observations suggest that rocksliding has been ongoing since the late Pleistocene deglaciation. Two major rockslide events have been dated at 10.0 ± 1.2 kyr and 7.7 ± 0.8 kyr before present, with failure volumes of 40 and 8 Mm3, respectively. The results have important implications concerning our understanding of the temporal distribution of paraglacial rockslides and rock avalanches; they provide a better understanding of the volumes and failure mechanisms of recurrent failure events; and they represent the first absolute ages of a prehistoric high-magnitude event in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Great earthquakes in the Himalaya are thought to occur mostly along the range front. Field mapping and radiocarbon dating reveal earthquake rupture on a previously unrecognized fault in the interior of the western Himalaya, which forms part of a key structural component of the mountain range, implying that seismic risk evaluations should be revised.
