The aim of this study was to investigate if specific clinical and histological findings can be related to biopsy complications to enable more closely monitoring patients at high risk.Results from 1081 biopsies (994 patients, median age 54.5 years; 896 native and 185 transplant kidney biopsies) were included. Diagnostic quality, morphology, clinical data and complications were prospectively registered.In native kidney biopsies, the most common diagnosis was IgA-nephritis, while in transplant kidney biopsies it was rejection. Patients with IgA-nephritis had a higher risk of major complications (11.7 versus 6.4 %, Odds Ratio (OR) 1.8, Confidence Interval (CI) 1.1-3.2) when compared to patients with other diseases. In native kidney biopsies, patients who experienced major complications had higher degrees of glomerulosclerosis (31 versus 20 %, p = 0.008), whereas in transplant kidney biopsies, patients had higher degrees of interstitial fibrosis (82 versus 33 %, p0.001) when compared to patients without major complications. IgA-nephritis-patients had a higher risk of re-biopsies (4.7 versus 1.3 %, OR 4, CI 1.5-11) than patients with other diseases. Patients with native kidneys who needed re-biopsies were younger (42.6 versus 52.3 years, p = 0.031) and had a higher degree of interstitial fibrosis (63 versus 34 %, p = 0.046).Patients with IgA-nephritis have an increased risk of major biopsy complications. The risk of re-biopsies was higher in younger individuals and in patients with IgA-nephritis.

Cryopreservation of a complete ovary may be a future method for fertility preservation in cancer patients. Difficulties exist in cryopreservation of the relatively large ovarian tissue mass. This study evaluates whether a human postmenopausal ovary can be used, as a complement to animal models, in studies of this research field.Postmenopausal human ovaries (n = 10) were isolated and flushed through ovarian arteries with either the cryoprotectant dimethylsulphoxide or Ringer-Acetate, followed by slow freezing. After thawing, production of androgens during in vitro perfusion and morphology (light/electron microscopy) were assessed.The dimethylsulphoxide-cryopreserved ovaries showed larger secretion of androgens during perfusion than Ringer Acetate-cryopreserved ovaries. Light microscopy showed well preserved morphology in both groups. Electron microscopy revealed normal appearance of stroma and vessels in the dimethylsulphoxide group.The study demonstrates the potential to use the postmenopausal human ovary for further studies aiming at optimizing cryopreservation protocols, with special reference to ovarian vascularity and stroma.

A total of 195 patients had surgery for papillary thyroid cancer. The mean age at operation was 50 years. A microdissection technique was used for total thyroidectomy and lymph node clearance. Postoperative radioiodine tests showed no uptake or an uptake close to the background activity in 77% of the examined patients. By counting the lymph nodes removed at surgery we were able to check on the quality of the lymph node dissection. Men had a higher incidence (70%) of lymph node metastases than women (45%). Only 4% of the patients had radioiodine ablation of the thyroid remnant. The median follow-up time was 13 years. None of the patients below 45 years of age at surgery died of thyroid cancer. In the older age group eight patients died of thyroid cancer at a mean age of 75 years. Five of those who died of a thyroid carcinoma had distant metastases at diagnosis. Among patients with resectable disease, three (1.6%) died of thyroid cancer, all of whom had lived for more than 17 years after surgery. Hence longer follow-up is needed before we know the final mortality in our series. The results suggest that surgical technique and strategy can positively influence the survival of patients with papillary thyroid cancer.
