Many studies have assessed the technical feasibility of producing bioenergy crops on agricultural lands. However, while it is possible to produce large quantities of agricultural biomass for bioenergy from lignocellulosic feedstocks, very few of these studies have assessed farmers’ willingness to produce these crops under different contracting arrangements. The purpose of this paper is to examine farmers’ willingness to produce alternative cellulosic biofuel feedstocks under different contractual, market, and harvesting arrangements. This is accomplished by using enumerated field surveys in Kansas with stated choice experiments eliciting farmers’ willingness to produce corn stover, sweet sorghum, and switchgrass under different contractual conditions. Using a random utility framework to model the farmers’ decisions, the paper examines the contractual attributes that will most likely increase the likelihood of feedstock enterprise adoption. Results indicate that net returns above the next best alternative use of the land, contract length, cost share, financial incentives, insurance, and custom harvest options are all important contract attributes. Farmers’ willingness to adopt and their willingness-to-pay for alternative contract attributes vary by region and choice of feedstock.

Stereotactic radiosurgery and fractionated Stereotactic radiotherapy (SR) offer precise localization of radiation dose (Gy) for the treatment of meningioma (M). For the multimodal treatment with preservation of function, SR is complementary to both microsurgery (S) and conventional external beam radiotherapy (XRT). The role of SR in the management of atypical and malignant meningiomas, however, remains unexplored. Fifty consecutive patients with meningioma: 18 males (60.1 +/− 2.3 years) and 32 females (56.9 +/− 2.2 years) (p = NS) received SR. Thirty-one patients had surgery 69.6 +/− 13.9 months (95% CI: 53.3–98.0) prior to SR. For patients having S, the incidence of atypical or malignant versus benign meningiomas (14 versus 17 patients) increased with age (p = 0.03). Twenty patients had XRT approximately 18 months prior to SR. For antecedent XRT, the range of doses was 3600–6400 cGy (median: 5040 cGy). Following failure of S and/or XRT, patients had SR. Compared to other series, the mean tumor volumes for SR were comparatively large: 9.8 +/− 1.3 cm3 (range 0.3–37.1 cm3). The median SR dose was 3500 cGy (range 540–5400 cGy) administered in seven fractions (range 1–30). Linear regression analysis showed a consistent method for fractionation: the number of administered fractions increased (p = 0.053) and the total dose increased (p = 0.054) with tumor size. During the interval for follow–up (17.9 +/− 2.9 months), one patient with malignant meningioma required surgery for progression 8 months after SR. In the remaining patients, post-SR MRIs showed control (unchanged or smaller tumor volume) regardless of histology. These results show that SR may provide control of M regardless of grade.

Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) for secretory pituitary adenoma offers precise localization of dose with potential sparing of optic and hypothalamic functions. We collated the indications, treatment parameters, and both the clinical and biochemical results of Stereotactic radiotherapy for ACTH- 1 and prolactin-secreting pituitary adenoma. Between May 1990 and February 1996, nine patients (4 males and 5 females) with a mean age of 31.9 years had fractionated SRT for ACTH- or prolactin-secreting pituitary adenomas (Cushing's disease: n = 5; prolactinoma: n = 3; Nelson's syndrome: n = 1). These 9 patients had subtotal transphenoidal resections before SRT. An additional patient with Cushing's disease had aborted transphenoidal surgery and single-fraction Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Prior to SRT, 4 patients received planned conventional fractionated external beam radiotherapy (XRT) (median dose 33.3 Gy). The median SRT dose was 34.5 Gy (range 14.4–50.4 Gy). The median total radiation dose (XRT plus SRT) for patients receiving fractionated treatment was 47.7 Gy. The median follow-up was 62 months (range 22–91 months). One patient with Nelson's syndrome was lost to follow-up. Of the 9 evaluable patients, none required reoperation for growth of pituitary tumor and all had radiographic control as shown by serial MRI scans. In 4 of the 6 patients with Cushing's disease, treatment resulted in normalization of hormone levels and resolution of symptoms. All 4 patients were able to discontinue medications. In 2 patients, normalization occurred within 4 months of treatment. Two patients with Cushing's disease failed, requiring adrenalectomy. For patients with prolactinoma, treatments resulted in a significant decrease of plasma prolactin levels. All patients treated for prolactinoma became asymptomatic; 2 were able to discontinue bromocriptine and 1 patient had a successful pregnancy. After radiation therapy, 1 patient developed new hypopituitarism. None of the patients developed worsened visual acuity, visual fields, or new neurological deficits. SRT with or without XRT may yield meaningful reductions in hormone levels with concomitant clinical improvement in selected patients with prolactinomas or Cushing's disease. In certain situations, combining conventional XRT with SRT is appropriate. Modifications of the Stereotactic radiation delivery may maximally reduce the hypothalamic dose, thereby possibly reducing the risk of clinical hypopituitarism. This treatment is safe and is without visual or other neurological toxicity.

Purpose: The potential of halogenated pyrimidines for the radiosensitization of human malignant gliomas remains unrealized. To assess the role of local delivery for radiosensitization, we tested a synthetic, implantablebiodegradable polymer for the controlled release of 5-iodo-2‘-deoxyuridine (IUdR) both in vitro and in vivo and the resultant radiosensitizationof human malignant glioma xenografts in vivo.Materials and methods: In vitro: To measure release, increasing (10%, 30%, 50%) proportions (weight/weight) of IUdR in the polyanhydride [(poly(bis(p-carboxyphenoxy)-propane) (PCPP) :sebacic acid (SA) (PCPP : SA ratio 20 : 80)] polymer discs were incubated (1 ml phosphate-buffered saline, 37° C). The supernatant fractions were serially assayed using high performance liquid chromatography. To measure modulation of release,polymer discs were co-loaded with 20 μCi 5-125-iodo-2‘-deoxyuridine (125-IUdR) and increasing (10%, 30%, or 50%) proportions of D-glucose. To test radiosensitization, cells (U251 human malignant glioma) were sequentially exposed to increasing (0 or 10 μM) concentrations of IUdR and increasing (0, 2.5, 5.0, or 10 Gy) doses of acute radiation. In vivo: To measure release, PCPP : SA polymerdiscs having 200 μCi 125-IUdR were surgically placed in U251 xenografts (0.1—0.2 cc) growing in the flanksof nude mice. The flanks were reproducibly positioned over a collimated scintillation detector and counted. To measure radiosensitization, PCPP : SApolymer discs having 0% (empty) or 50% IUdR wereplaced in the tumor or contralateral flank. After five days, the tumors were acutely irradiated (500 cGy × 2 daily fractions).Results: In vitro: Intact IUdR was released from the PCPP : SA polymer discs in proportion to the percentage loading. After 4 days the cumulative percentages of loaded IUdR that were released were 43.7 $plusmn; 0.1, 70.0 ± 0.2, and 90.2 ± 0.2 (p < 0.001 ANOVA) for the 10, 30, and 50% loadings. With 0, 10, 30,or 50% D-glucose co-loading, the cumulative release of 125-IUdR from PCPP : SA polymers was 21, 70, 92, or 97%(p < 0.001), respectively, measured 26 days after incubation.IUdR radiosensitized U251 cells in vitro. Cell survival (log10) was – 2.02 ± 0.02 and – 3.68± 0.11 (p < 0.001) after the 10 Gy treatment and no (control) or 10 μM IUdR exposures, respectively. In vivo: 125-IUdR Release: The average counts (log10 cpm ± SEM) (hours after implant) were 5.2 ± 0.05 (0.5), 4.3 ± 0.07 (17), 3.9 ± 0.08 (64), and 2.8 ± 0.06 (284). Radiosensitization: Afterintratumoral implantation of empty polymer or intratumoral 50%IUdR polymer, or implantation of 50% IUdR polymers contralateral to tumors, the average growth delays of tumors to4 times the initial volumes were 15.4 ± 1.8, 20.1 + 0.1,and 20.3 + 3.6 (mean + SEM) days, respectively (p = 0.488one-way ANOVA). After empty polymer and radiation treatments,no tumors regressed and the growth delay was 31.1 + 2.1 (p = 0.046 vs. empty polymer alone) days. After implantation of50% IUdR polymers either contralateral to the tumors orinside the tumors, followed by radiation, tumors regressed; growth delays to return to the initial average volumes of 14.0+ 3.6 or 24.2 + 0.2 (p < 0.01) days, respectively.Conclusions: Synthetic, implantable biodegradable polymers hold promise for the controlled release and local delivery ofIUdR for radiosensitization of gliomas.

An economic analysis of wheat and grain sorghum production systems that affect carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and sequester soil carbon (C) in metric tons (MT) is conducted. Expected net returns, changes in net C sequestered, and the value of C credits necessary to equate net returns from systems that sequester more C with those that sequester less is determined with and without adjustments for CO2 emissions from production inputs. Experiment station cropping practices, yield data, and soil C data for continuously cropped and rotated wheat and grain sorghum produced with conventional tillage and no-tillage are used. No-till has lower net returns because of somewhat lower yields and higher overall costs. Both crops produced under no-till have higher annual soil C gains than under conventional tillage. However, no-till systems have somewhat higher total atmospheric emissions of C from production inputs. The C credit values estimated in this study will equate net returns of no-tillage to conventional tillage range from $8.62 to $64.65/MT/yr when C emissions from production inputs are subtracted from soil C sequestered, and $8.59 to $60.54/MT/yr when atmospheric emissions are not considered. This indicates accounting for CO2 emissions from production inputs may not be necessary in the process to issue C credits.
