Titanium silicates of MWW structures with different Si/Ti ratios were prepared via hydrothermal synthesis using piperidine as the structure directing agent and boric acid as the crystallization agent. All the syntheses resulted in highly crystalline materials independent of the Si/Ti ratio. The observed morphology showed MWW-like well-defined thin hexagonal platelets. The synthesized Ti-MWW materials exhibited higher surface areas and partial meso-porosity compared to the commercial TS-1 catalyst. The coordination of the Ti-species was investigated by UV–vis- and IR-spectroscopy. The MWW titanium silicates were tested for the catalytic performance in the epoxidation of propylene in a laboratory-scale trickle bed reactor to compare their clear different physico-chemical properties with the commercial TS-1. The synthesized Ti-MWW materials showed significantly higher catalytic activities, up to 3.5 times, using acetonitrile as the solvent and enhanced epoxide selectivities partially up to 100% in methanol unlike TS-1. The effect of the Ti content in the MWW and the calcination conditions were investigated in propylene epoxidation, revealing the beneficial effect of a lower calcination temperature and an increased Ti content on the activity. The catalytic results were correlated with the physico-chemical properties of the synthesized materials. Graphical Abstract

The production of ethylene and propylene through aerobic alkane oxidation without significant coproduction of CO and CO2 (COx) presents a challenge to academic and industrial researchers alike. Recently, boron-containing materials such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have been identified as active and selective catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane to propylene with minimal COx selectivity. Additionally, high olefin selectivity is also obtained in the oxidation of other alkanes and other materials such as metal borides and supported B/SiO2 have been successfully applied to this transformation. Recent advances in the understanding of these catalysts in the oxidation of light alkanes are presented here providing a framework for further study of this exciting field.

In this contribution we use computational tools to investigate the reaction of alcohol substrates with reactive nitrogen oxide species such as N2O3 and N2O4, leading to the formation of alkyl nitrites. These nitrites are interesting intermediates which can be processed to various valuable chemicals such as ketones/aldehydes and dimethyl oxalate while regenerating NO x . As such, NO x is used as an oxidation mediator, converting alcohol substrates to more reactive nitrites which can be selectively converted to more desired compounds, closing a catalytic cycle in NO x species.

During the autoxidation of cyclohexane, abstraction of the αH-atom of the hydroperoxide product by chain-carrying peroxyl radicals produces both the desired alcohol and ketone products, as well as the majority of by-products. Rationalizing the impact of this reaction, one should aim for a (catalytic) destruction of this hydroperoxide without the intervention of peroxyl chain-carriers. Starting from these new insights in the molecular mechanism, attempts for rational catalyst design are initiated.

Burned greasy deposits were found inside shells of the large Nile bivalve Chambardia rubens, excavated in an eight- to tenth- century AD church of the Coptic monastery of Bawit, Egypt, and supposedly used as oil lamps. The residues were subjected to a combination of chromatographic residue analysis techniques. The rather high concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids, as analysed by gas chromatography (GC) in the methylated extract, suggest the presence of a vegetal oil. Analysis of the stable carbon isotopes (delta C-13 values) of the methyl esters also favoured plants over animals as the lipid source. In the search for biomarkers by GC coupled to mass spectrometry on a silylated extract, a range of diacids together with high concentrations of 13,14-dihydroxydocosanoate and 11,12-dihydroxyeicosanoate were found. These compounds are oxidation products of erucic acid and gondoic acid, which are abundantly present in seeds of Brassicaceae plants. Liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry analysis showed low concentrations of unaltered triglycerides, but revealed sizeable amounts of triglycerides with at least one dihydroxylated acyl chain. The unusual preservation of dihydroxylated triglycerides and alpha,omega-dicarboxylic acids can be related to the dry preservation conditions. Analysis of the stereoisomers of the dihydroxylated fatty acids allows one to determine whether oxidation took place during burning of the fuel or afterwards.
