Stellar-inertial guidance is a composite guidance technique that can effectively enhance the impact accuracy of ballistic missiles. In this paper, measurement and correction equations for a single-star stellar-inertial guidance system were developed, and a concept of equivalent information compression was presented and discussed through some propositions. With this concept, accuracies of single/double star schemes were compared, and it was shown that a single-star scheme can achieve the accuracy equivalent to a double-star scheme. This theoretically proves the feasibility of the rapid determination of the optimum stellar direction of the single-star scheme. Lastly, a compensational method to correct the guidance errors was employed when the adopted navigation star deviated from the optimum stellar direction.

Today the reproduction of pictures in journals and books is no longer possible without “information compression”. This important process needs “Iterated Function Systems”-in short IFS. Doing so, affine mappings and their properties play a fundamental role.

This article is an overview of a programme of research based on the conjecture thatall kinds of computing and formal reasoning may usefully be understood as information compression by pattern matching, unification and metrics-guided search.

Plusieurs codeurs de parole a debit reduit sont en cours de definition ou de normalisation actuellement. Ils sont bases sur le meme principe d’analyse par synthese : on realise une modelisation parametrique du signal sous la forme d’un signal d’excitation, generalement issu d’un dictionnaire, passant au travers d’un ou plusieurs filtres. Le but de cet article est de presenter les differentes methodes proposees dans la litterature ces dernieres annees sous un formalisme unique et de chiffrer, approximativement, le cout des differents algorithmes. On expose, d’abord, le principe de ces codeurs. On montre ensuite, qu’une description generalisee de l’excitation couvre plusieurs methodes classiques de codage. On aboutit ainsi a l’algorithme iteratif standard sous sa forme la plus generale. On cherche, enfin, a evaluer la complexite du traitement en terme essentiellement, de nombre de multiplications/accumulations par seconde et a analyser les differentes simplifications possibles. A titre de conclusion, on presente les choix realises pour les codeurs en cours de normalisation.

In the stationary case, the Guazzo algorithm yields an average length after source coding as close as desired to its theoretical limit, the source entropy, without demanding as the Huffman algorithm that an extension of it is used. We show that it can be made adaptive and thus efficient for unknown or varying sources, which is confirmed by simulation results. Finally, we outline the comparison of this algorithm with other ones.

On propose un systeme de codage d’images en sousbandes utilisant des filtres bidimensionnels a reponse impulsionnelle infinie inverses, c’ est-a-dire operant dans des directions opposees. Ce systeme garantit une reconstruction des images exempte d’effets de non-linearite de phase. L’utilisation de filtres d’onde est etudiee dans le cadre de cette application. Une nouvelle technique de codage des bandes de frequence elevee est proposee. Les simulations montrent que cette technique est vraiment tres efficace.

The author describes the principles of finite precision implementation of adaptive quantization using comparison to decision levels and he introduces a new algorithm leading to a minimum quantization error. Associated with adaptive predictors inadpcm coders, the later scheme is shown to give better signal to noise ratio for idle noise coding and can prevent the accumulation of distortion that occurs with the first algorithm in a succession ofadpcm coders in tandem.

Computers, the human mind, and social systems have common problems of inadequate memory and insufficient data manipulation speed. In each of these domains, information compression techniques have evolved to reduce storage and processing needs. Among the techniques for information compression, coding of information in procedures stands out as exceptionally powerful. Procedural information coding also gives rise to behavior that may be defined as intelligent. It is found in the human mind, in machines and in social systems. Its use in human thought is aided by language development which promotes regular review of abstract procedures. A practical consequence of better understanding of procedural information coding is the possibility of training people to exhibit greater mental capacity, a controversial possibility. This paper explores the impact of data processing resource limitations, data compression and procedural thinking in men and machines.

Automated correlation of ECG history for early detection of heart disease, especially among the young, has been a matter of increasing interest. However, each electrocardiogram, recorded say a few months apart, generates anywhere from 600 to 2400 digitized data, so that statistical methods cannot directly be applied. An information compression step suitable for such data is presented in this paper and a prediction procedure is developed for forecasting the waveform changes. Specifically, each ECG lead is digitized and represented by itsz-domain modes. These modes are found to exhibit continuity in time, from month to month and year to year, except in the event of major physiological changes such as after surgery, thus lending themselves ideally to statistic al prediction. To enhance discrimination of the subtle changes inP, QRS, andT complexes, the derivatives of the waves are employed for extraction of the modes. This signifies a departure from previous efforts in ECG representation. Indeed, otherwise, important changes in the waves can remain undetected through mode extraction while the human eye can perceive them rather easily from the recorded traces.
