Spectral transmittance signatures for a variety of freshwater ice types were collected in the 400โ850 nm range. Clear ice showed the highest transmittances, snow-covered ice the lowest and other ice types intermediate transmittances. All of the ice spectral transmittance curves showed the same general shape with no mutually-exclusive characteristics exhibited by any ice type. The magnitude of the transmittance values was the primary distinguishing factor. The range of transmittance values directly under the ice was remarkably narrow (excluding snow-covered ice) and markedly different from values lower in the water column.
