Abstract

In recent years, the tail zone of the largest tributary of the largest freshwater lake, Poyang Lake in China, has been challenged by serious water scarcity caused by the drop of the water level during dry season. It is difficult to establish effective remedial measures because of the lack of research regarding the causes of the water level drop. Therefore, this phenomenon and its causes were analyzed in this study. First, a series of daily discharge and water level data from six hydrological and water level stations that has been recorded since the 1950s was used to determine the historical trends in the dry water level using the Mann–Kendall test. Based on the combination of topographic data of typical cross section and classic water conservancy equations, the causes of the water level decrease were studied. The results show that the water level drop in this region was not notable until 2003. Subsequently, continuous deterioration became noticeable. Influenced by various factors, the cumulative water level drop in the dry season reached 4.06 m. This demonstrates the weak correlation between the water level drop and inflow. Instead, the water level decrease was mainly affected by the riverbed undercutting and slightly influenced by changes of the water level in the four lower branches. Effective alleviation strategies should include the strict limitation of the incision of the riverbed and increase in the downstream water level.

Abstract

In recent years, sedimentation dredging has received extensive attention as an effective way to extend the life of reservoirs and to address the global shortage of sediment resources. Thus, sediment deposition analysis can inform reservoir sedimentation dredging. Based on a series of field data for 10 fixed sections observed over 6 years and two topographic observations in the Lushui Reservoir, Hubei Province in China since 1959, the characteristics of sediment deposition, including the amount, the longitudinal distribution, and the transverse distribution in different periods, were analyzed in this study. The results show that sedimentation mainly occurred within 15 km of the dam with an equal thickness along the wetted perimeter during the flood detention period. After the impoundment of the reservoir, sedimentation mainly occurred in the central 7 km section of the reservoir, which is about 15 km away from the dam. In addition, the main deposition is on the primary channel with a small amount on the beaches. In general, the sediment deposition of the Lushui Reservoir is not significant, accounting for only 4% of the total reservoir capacity. However, the siltation in the local reservoir sections is more prominent. Some measurements should be taken to control the sediment deposition to maintain the effective storage capacity of the reservoir, and four dredging zones were proposed based on the analysis.

Abstract

In the square-wave PFM system for transmission of TV programmes through optical fibres, square-wave PFM pulses are generated at the transmitter with a relatively low centre frequency, whereas double-frequency equal-width narrow pulses are produced in the receiver before the demodulating low-pass filter, at both the rising and falling edges of the transmitted pulses. The use of the frequency-doubling technique in such a system results in narrow transmission bandwidth and high receiver sensitivity, thus prolonging the transmission distance significantly as compared with ordinary PFM. In the experiment, the system is operated at 1.3 μm with multimode fibre having bandwidth 700 MHz km, a laser diode as optical source and a PIN/FET as detector. It can effectively transmit the high-quality broadcast TV programme with accompanying sound channel to a distance of 50.7 km. Experimental results are: receiver sensitivity −40 dB m, weighted SNR for video 59.3 dB, differential gain and differential phase less than 1% and 1°, respectively.
