Abstract

Background The role of circadian rhythm abnormalities in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains relatively unknown. The aim of this study was to identify the inflammatory cytokine profile in the IBD patients and its relationship with the quality of sleep. Methods Prospective, single-center observational cohort study was performed. In all enrolled adult IBD patients, the disease activity was assessed using Crohn’s Disease Activity Index (CDAI) for Crohn’s disease (CD) and Partial Mayo Score for ulcerative colitis (UC), respectively. To assess the quality of sleep, all patients were asked to respond to a questionnaire to define Pittsburgh Quality Sleep Index (PSQI). From all enrolled patients, 15 ml venous blood was taken to determine serum inflammatory cytokine levels and perform standard laboratory tests. Results Fifty-two IBD patients were enrolled in the study: 32 with CD and 20 with UC. The poor sleep was noted in 69.4% of patients with clinically active and in 6.3% of patients with inactive disease. In the group of IBD patients with poor sleep, the significantly higher level of serum IL-6, IL-17, and IL-23 were observed. In IBD patients with exacerbation, the significantly higher level of serum IL-6, IL-17, and IL-23 were recorded. Conclusions The relationship between quality of sleep and proinflammatory cytokine profile may show us a predisposition for the development of inflammatory intestinal lesions in IBD patients with sleep disturbances. This knowledge may allow the pharmacological and behavioral therapies of circadian rhythm abnormalities to become new significant targets in IBD patients.

Abstract

We consider need for sense-making a personal resource and propose that people differ in their levels of this need. We present results of five studies (N = 879) that tested Need for Sense-Making Scale (NSM). The scale is unidimensional, highly reliable, and has satisfactory construct and criterion validity. Need for sense-making was moderately positively related to extroversion, openness, conscientiousness, self-esteem, and sense of control, while negatively related to neuroticism. There was an inverted U-shaped relationship between the need for sense-making and well-being. When individuals were presented with a meaningful task, searching for and presence of meaning sequentially mediate the relationship between need for sense-making and task performance. Need for sense-making predicts work engagement through searching for and presence of meaningful work.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to establish the effect of component share in mixtures and harvest date on concentrations of selected heavy metals in the green fodder of field pea, oat, and their mixtures. The research hypothesis assumed that the cultivation of peas and oats in pure sowing, and in mixtures will also allow to choose combinations from which the forage will have the lowest content of heavy metals. Field research was conducted at the Zawady Experimental Farm (52° 03′ 39″ N, 22° 33′ 80″ E) which belongs to Siedlce University of Natural Sciences and Humanities. Two factors were tested in the study: I—component share in the mixture: field pea—pure stand 100%, oat—pure stand 100%, field pea 75% + oat 25%, field pea 50% + oat 50%, field pea 25% + oat 75%; II—harvest date: field pea flowering stage, field pea flat pod stage. Plant material was sampled to determine the following elements: Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, and Ni. The results of the study demonstrated that field pea grown in pure stand had the highest copper and zinc contents, and the lowest chromium and nickel contents. Field pea mixed with oat significantly reduced heavy metal content in green fodder. Cadmium and lead contents in the green fodder of field pea/oat mixtures were too low to be determined by means of the spectrometer Perkin Elmer Optima 8300. Regular checks of heavy metal contents are recommended in spite of their low amounts in the green fodder of field pea/oat mixtures.

Abstract

Solvatochromic studies on two new merocyanines, prepared from 5-(5-bromo-6-hydroxynaphthyl-2)-7,7-dimethyl-7H-indolo[1,2-a]quinolinium perchlorate and 5-(5-nitro-6-hydroxynaphthyl-2)-7,7-dimethyl-7H-indolo[1,2-a]quinolinium perchlorate, were performed in 21 solvents using UV–vis spectroscopy. The VBHB model (J.A. Soroka and K.B. Soroka in J. Phys. Org. Chem. 4:592–604, 1991) was applied to describe their solvatochromic properties. The results indicate that both dyes exhibit variable solvatochromism, i.e. it is positive in nonpolar solvents and negative in polar aprotic and protic solvents. The solvatochromic shifts of both merocyanines are approximately 8000 cm−1(for toluene to water). The studies revealed that these two merocyanines exist in solutions as nonpolar (quinoid, i.e. vinylogous amide, V) or polar (zwitterionic, i.e. betaine, B) forms in their ground state, respectively. The dye with a nitro substituent can also form a hydrogen-bonded betaine (HB). This dye is found to be the first compound in the whole group of 7H-indolo[1,2-a]quinolinium merocyanines that does not comply with the VBHB model assumptions.

12. Reconstruction of human influence during the last two centuries on two small oxbow lakes near Warsaw (Poland)

Abstract

Short sediment cores from two small oxbow lakes located in the Vistula valley near Warsaw (Poland) were analysed for chemical composition and zooplankton (Cladocera) remains. The results of these analyses were evaluated using ordination techniques and the results were used to reconstruct the history of human impact of the lakes. The cores were dated using the 210Pb method. These analyses show that the collected sediments (60 cm- and 67 cm-long-cores) were deposited during the last 150–200 years. Cladocera assemblages were different in the two lakes; however, Bosmina longirostris was dominant among subfossil Cladocera species in both lakes. The presence of this species indicates the high trophic state of the lakes. Changes in Cladocera species composition suggest that a significant increase in the lakes’ trophic levels has occurred since the 1920s. The change could be related to the construction of flood dikes along the river Vistula, the isolation of the studied lakes from the river, changes in land use, or some combination of these factors. The chemical composition of sediments, particularly the increase in phosphorus and sulphur concentrations, confirms that the construction of dikes against flood was the major factor inducing eutrophication of the oxbow lakes. This study shows that the Warsaw small water bodies are especially sensitive to local disturbances caused by human activity, mainly water management, land use changes and agriculture.

Abstract

Alkali feldspar megacrysts from the porphyritic Karkonosze granite (Western Sudetes, Poland) were formed during magma mixing. Barium concentrations in zoned crystals, a sensitive indicator of feldspar migration between coeval magmas, serve to reconstruct the crystallization path of the megacrysts. Based on geochemical data, a double mixing model for the formation of the porphyritic granite and for megacryst growth is constructed. The feldspar growth model supports megacryst nucleation and early crystallization in a hybridized crustal magma of granodioritic composition. The growth model gives credibility of the choice of partition coefficients used in the modelling. Insights gained from mixing models based on whole rock composition and mineral zonation allow the recognition of various hybridization events that are reflected in a variety of megacryst crystallization paths within the pluton.

Abstract

Dipeptidyl aminopeptidases I and IV have recently found wide practical application (polypeptide sequencing, clinical diagnostics) so it is necessary to extend present methods and work out new ones for determination of their activity. A new, voltammetric method for determination of peptidase activity is proposed, which allows optimization of the determination conditions according to the activity to be measured. The method has some advantages over the spectrophotometric methods, such as applicability to opaque solutions and higher sensitivity.
