Abstract

Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (U) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((U) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

Abstract

Using the HERA-B detector, the b-bbar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b-bbar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi, by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi->ll decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both $e^+e^-$ and $\mu^+\mu^-$ channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section $\sigma(b \bar b) = 32 ^{+14}_{-12} (stat) ^{+6}_{-7} (sys) nb/nucleon$., Comment: 22 pages, 10 Postscript figures

Abstract

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy at W-band (94 GHz) is used to resolve theg-tensors of the radical ions of the primary chlorophyll donor P 700 +⋅ and the quinone acceptor A 1 −⋅ in photosystem I. The obtainedg-tensor principal values are compared with those of the isolated pigment radicals in organic solvents and the shifts are related to an impact of the protein environment. P 700 +⋅ has been investigated in photosystem I single crystals at 94 GHz. W-band EPR applied to the photoinduced radical pair P 700 +⋅ A 1 −⋅ is used to correctly assign theg-tensor axes of P 700 +⋅ to the molecular structure of the primary donor. Density functional theory calculations on a model of A 1 −⋅ in its binding pocket derived from the recent crystal structure of photosystem I were utilized to correlate experimental magnetic resonance parameters with structural elements of the protein.

Abstract

The radical pair state P 865 +. Q A −. (P865: primary donor, QA: quinone acceptor) in Zn-substituted bacterial reaction centers is investigated using transient and pulsed EPR spectroscopy. For photoexcited samples not frozen in the dark but under continuous illumination, a prolonged lifetime of this radical pair state is observed in agreement with previous studies using time resolved optical spectroscopy. The transient EPR spectra revealed neither a different orientation of the quinone acceptor anion nor a change of itsg-anisotropy in the sample frozen in the charge separated state as compared with that frozen in the dark. The latter finding indicates a similar hydrogen bonding situation for Q A −. in both samples. Changes observed in the transient EPR spectra are interpreted as result of contributions from spin-polarized Q A −. which was generated in part of the sample while freezing under illumination. From the out-of-phase echo modulation pattern observed in the pulsed EPR measurements, it follows that the distance between P 865 +. and Q A −. is the same in dark frozen samples and in those frozen under continuous illuminaton. This is in contrast to the model suggested by Kleinfeld D., Okamura M.Y., Feher G.: Biochemistry23, 5780 (1984), in which an increased distance and a larger distribution of distances was suggested for samples frozen under illumination. The prolonged lifetime of the radical pair P 865 +. Q A −. is discussed in terms of differences in the relaxation behaviour of the protein.

Abstract

We report on a measurement of the proton structure function F 2 in the range 3.5×10-5≤x≤4×10-3 and 1.5 GeV2≤Q 2≤15GeV2 at the ep collider HERA operating at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=300GeV. The rise of F 2 with decreasing x observed in the previous HERA measurements persists in this lower x and Q 2 range. The Q 2 evolution of F 2, even at the lowest Q 2 and x measured, is consistent with perturbative QCD. © 1996 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

A search for the reactionsγγ→ωω andγγ→ρ0ω has been carried out at an averagee+e− CM energy of 34.6 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 45 pb−1. Upper limits are set for these two channels over the γγ CM Energy range of 1.6 to 2.5 GeV. The cross section is determined for the exclusive channelγγ→π+2π−π0.

Abstract

Measurements of energy moments for single quark jets at c.m. energies between 12 and 31.6 GeV are presented. The data, corrected for detector effects and initial state radiation, are compared to QCD predictions in the leading log approximation. Non perturbative effects are found to be moderate, and they strongly decrease with increasing c.m. energy. Once partly corrected for the presence of these fragmentation effects, our data agree well with all features of the leading log prediction, and in particular with the variation of the strong coupling constant over a wide range of energies and momentum transfers.

Abstract

In unserer tierexperimentellen Arbeit untersuchten wir licht- und elektronenmikroskopisch die Struktur des Gelenkknorpels nach homologer Transplantation. In den rechten medialen Femurcondylus vom Kaninchen wurden Knochen-Knorpel-Defekte gesezt, die mit homologen, in flussigem Stickstoff konservierten Knochen-Knorpel-Transplantaten ausgefullt wurden. 2, 4 und 6 Monate nach Transplantation wurden die Tiere getotet. Wahrend funktionell und rontgenologisch keine Unterschiede zum unbehandelten Kniegelenk festzustellen sind, sieht man im Licht- und Elektronenmikroskop zahlreiche strukturelle Veranderungen im Vergleich zum normalen Gelenkknorpel. So uberwiegen in der ersten Phase des Einheilungsprozesses regressive Vorgange. In der zweiten Phase werden Bindegewebszellen gebildet, die sich metaplastisch in Knorpelzellen umwandeln. Dieses neuentstandene Gewebe ist morphologisch hyalinem Knorpelgewebe zuzuordnen.

Abstract

We present an experimental study of jetproduction in photon-photon interactions for 0.1≲Q2≲120 GeV2 and jet transverse momentum,pT, up to 5 GeV/c. At alQ2, the data show a highpT, tail, characteristic of a point-like interaction. The jet production cross-section approaches the quarkparton model (QPM) expectation as either jetpT orQ2 increases. Overall, the data are well described in both total cross-section and event topology by the sum of a vector-dominance model and a point-like interaction, represented by the QPM.

Abstract

The Sterman-Weinberg 2-jet cross section is measured from the hadron energy flow using the thrust axis to define the axis of the jet cone. The results are compared with first order QCD predictions. Deviations due to fragmentation are observed which decrease with increasing center of mass energy. We obtain an upper limit of Λmax≈523 MeV for the QCD scale parameter using a method which is insensitive to the details of the fragmentation. Moments of energy flow are also studied.

Abstract

The processe + e −→e + e − μ+μ− has been studied using the PLUTO detector at PETRA. The data agree well with QED calculations to order α4. Comparison is also made with the predicted leptonic structure function of the real photon using the deep inelastice-γ scattering formalism.

Abstract

The jet character of the hadronic final states produced ine+e− annihilations is studied in terms of jet measures such as thrust, sphericity, jet opening angle and jet masses, in the energy range 7.7 to 31.6 GeV. All distributions and averages have been corrected for detector effects and initial state radiation. The energy dependence of the averages of these jet quantities is used to estimate the contributions due to perturbative QCD and fragmentation effects. Correlations between the jet measures and the multiplicity of charged hadrons are also presented.

Abstract

We present results on jet production in γγ interactions where both photons are quasi-real. The invariant masses of the hadronnic system are limited to the range 4≦W vis≦12 GeV/c2. The data approach the quark-Parton-Model (QPM) expectation at the highestp jet values (≧4 GeV/c). Jet production at lowp T (≦1 GeV/c) can be described by a Vector Dominance derived model. The data also have a component with no apparent jet structure in the range, 1.0 ≦P jet ≦4.0 GeV/c which can be described by phase space or by models of the QCD hard scattering processes cesses $$\gamma \gamma \to q\bar qg$$ and $$\gamma \gamma \to q\bar qq\bar q$$

Abstract

We have measured the cross section of four charged pion production in photon-photon interactions in the invariant mass range 1.0≦Wγγ≦3.2 GeV and up toQ2=16 GeV2. For 1.2 GeV≦Wγγ≦1.7 GeV the process is dominated by ρ0ρ0 production with a rapid rise in cross section around 1.2 GeV, well below the nominal ρ0ρ0 threshold. The observed distributions in the two particle masses and in the production and decay angles are well described by an incoherent sum of the phase-space subprocesses γγ →ρ0ρ0, →ρ0π+π−, and →π+π−π+π−. A spin-parity analysis of the ρ0ρ0 system showsJP=2+ to dominate, although 0+ is also possible forWγγ≦1.4 GeV. Negative partity states are excluded.

Abstract

A measurement of the γγ total cross section, σγγ(Q 2 W), is presented for theQ 2 range 0.1 to 100 GeV2, and for the massW of the hadronic final state between 1.5 and 10 GeV. The dependence of σγγ on bothQ 2 andW is measured. The results are compared with theoretical predictions. It is found that the data are well described by a sum of quarkparton model and vector dominance contributions.

Abstract

Multihadron events resulting frome+e− annihilation at the Υ-resonance are analysed with respect to lowest order QCD which predicts a dominant Υ decay into three vector gluons. Smearing effects due to the gluon fragmentation are so large, however, that no clear 3-jet structure or flatness is expected in the hadron final state. Instead, Monte Carlo simulations predict event structures with thrust and triplicity distributions distinctly different from those of two quark-jet and of phase space like decay mechanisms. The data are in perfect agreement with the 3-vector gluon decay as predicted by QCD and exclude dominantly phase space like or 2-quark jet decays. Also, the decay into scalar gluons is excluded by the data. An upper limit for the Υ-decay into one photon and two gluons is obtained.

Abstract

We have measured Bhabha scattering at cms energies of 9.4, 13, 17, 22, 27.5, 30.0, and 31.6 GeV and the reactione+e-→μ+μ- at 9.4 GeV. The experiment covers spacelike momentum transfers up to −850 GeV2 and timelike momentum transfers up to 1,000 GeV2. We obtain good agreement with QED comparing differential cross sections (measured between 35° and 145°), acoplanarity distributions and the energy dependence (for Bhabha scattering). Defining possible modifications of QED in a model independent way we obtain stringent limits in the range of 70–200 GeV on cutoff parameters. We test to an accuracy of 5–8% the validity of some general principles of QED, such as pointlike coupling, crossing symmetry and μe-universality.

Abstract

We have studied 419 τ pair events produced in the reactione+e−→τ+ τ− at a c.m. energy of 34.6 GeV. We measure the cross section and angular distribution, as well as the decay branching ratios. The production characteristics are consistent with the Standard Electroweak Model predictions of γ andZ0 interference. The branching ratios are generally consistent with the τ decaying according to standard weak interaction principles, but we observe somewhat more decays resulting in single charged hadrons plus neutrals than are predicted by present theory.

Abstract

An experimental study of two jet production by interactions of two quasi-real photons is presented. The data for production of jets with high transverse momentum squared, p T 2 >10GeV2, are found to be consistent with the fractionally charged quark-parton model. If gauge integer charged quark models are considered, then the gluon mass is less than 5 MeV at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract

We present high statistics measurements of the energy-energy correlation (EEC) and its related asymmetry (AEEC) ine+e− annihilation at a c.m. energy of 34.6 GeV. We find that the energy dependence as well as the large angle behaviour of the latter are well described by perturbative QCD calculations toOα(s2). Non-perturbative effects are estimated with the help of fragmentation models in which different jet topologies are separated using (ɛ, δ) cuts, and found to be small. The extracted values of\(\Lambda _{\overline {MS} }\) lie between 100 and 300 MeV.

We calculate the differential cross section for the processe + e − →γ for longitudinal or transversal polarization of the electron positron beams. The resulting formulae are evaluated using Monte Carlo methods to find measurable effects of the weak interaction, in particular those exhibiting parity violation.

Abstract

The processγγπ+π− has been measured with complete particle identification. Cross-sections are presented from near threshold up to the region of thef(1270). In the mass range 0.5–0.7 GeV, crosssections are lower than the Born term predictions and show no evidence for an e(600). The two-photon width of thef(1270) is found to be in agreement with previous results.

Abstract

In the analysis of the reactione+e−→e+e−KS0Ks0 clear evidence for exclusive γγ→f2′ resonance production is observed. The productΓγγ ·B(f2′→K\(\bar K\)) is measured to be 0.10−0.03−0.02+0.04+0.03 keV independent of ana priori assumption on the helicity structure. Our data are consistent with a pure helicity 2 contribution and we derive an upper limit for the ratioΓγγ(0)/Γγγ. The absence of events in the mass region around 1.3 GeV clearly proves destructivef2−a2 interference and allows to measure the relative phases betweenf2,a2 andf2′. Upper limits on the production of the glueball candidate statesf2(1720) andX(2230) as well as theKS0KS0-continuum are given.

Abstract

In a sample of 106Σ+ hyperons we have searched for the decaysσ+→ ne+ν andσ+→nμ+ν, which would violate theΔQ=ΔS rule. NoΣ+→ne+ν decay was found, whereas 313σ−→ne−ν decays were identified in the same film. With 90% confidence we obtain $$\frac{{\Gamma (\sum ^ + \to ne^ + v)}}{{\Gamma (\sum ^ - \to ne^ - \bar v)}} \leqq 3.10^{ - 2} .$$

We have found a possible example of the rare decayσ+→nΜ+Ν, which violatesδS=δQ. The positive decay track of theσ+ comes to rest in the hydrogen bubble chamber and decays into ane+. Abstract

The ratio of the axial-vector to vector coupling constant, ¦g 1/f 1¦, in theΣ −→ne − $$\bar v$$ decay was determined from the electron-neutrino angular distribution. In a sample of 454Σ −→ne − $$\bar v$$ decays a search was made for subsequent neutron proton scattering in order to detect the decay neutrons. TheΣ hyperons were produced by stoppingK −-mesons in the 81 cm Saclay hydrogen bubble chamber. For the kinematical analysis 33Σ −→ne − ν events with associatednp→np interactions were accepted. The value ¦g 1/f 1¦=0.37 −0.19 +0.26 was obtained.

From about 2 × 106 measured ∑± decay's produced by stoppingK− mesons in the 81 cm Saclay hydrogen bubble chamber about 140,000 ∑− →n π− and 20,000 ∑+ →nπ+ decays were selected for a lifetime measurement. We obtained: $$\begin{gathered} \tau _{\Sigma ^ + } = (0.795 \pm 0.010) \times 10^{ - 10} \sec \hfill \\ \tau _{\Sigma ^ - } = (1.485 \pm 0.022) \times 10^{ - 10} \sec . \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$

Abstract

From about 6×106 stoppingK−-meson reactions in the Saclay 80 cm hydrogen bubble chamber 70Σ−→Λe−¯ν and 11Σ+→Λe+ν decays have been identified. The ratio of the vector to axial vector coupling constant has been determined,f1/g1=−0.22±0.28, consistent with the predictionf1=0 of the CVC-theory. The branching ratios for the two decay modes are,Γ(Σ−→Λe−ν)/Γ(Σ−→ all modes)=(0.69±0.12). 10−4,Γ(Σ+→Λe+ν)/Γ(Σ+→ all modes)=(0.29±0.10). 10−4. The ratio, Γ(Σ+→Λe+)/Γ(Σ−→Λe−v)=0.69±0.18, agrees with the phase space ratio, 0.61, therefore a theory that includes no second class currents is consistent with the data.

Approximately 106 Σ± decays of the stopping K− film (80 cm Saclay HBC) have been measured with the Heidelberg KONRAD-system1. This system is capable of detecting about 75% of the Σ−→ ne−¯v decays. Abstract

In a stoppingK− exposure of the Saclay 81 cm hydrogen bubble chamber, we have obtained a sample of 352 kinematically determined Λ→pe−¯v dacays. From the electron-neutrino angular distribution of these events, we find the ratio of the axial vector to vector coupling constants ¦g1/f1¦=0.74−0.09+0.12. This result is in good agreement with Cabibbo's theory. The method of analysis is insensitive to the relative strength of weak magnetism.

In a bubble chamber experiment about 2×106Σ±-decays have been measured to separateΣ±→ne±¯ν events from the two-body modes. NoΣ+→ne+ν event was found whereas 607Σ−→ne−¯ν decays could be identified. The data yield for the ΔQ=−ΔS decay an upper limit: $$\frac{{\Gamma \left( {\sum {^ + } \to ne^ + v} \right)}}{{\Gamma \left( {\sum {^ - } \to ne^ - v} \right)}}< 1.9 x 10^{ - 2} (90\% confidence level)$$ and the branching ratio: $$\frac{{\Gamma \left( {\sum {^ - } \to ne^ - v} \right)}}{{\Gamma \left( {\sum {^ - } \to n\pi ^ - } \right)}} = (1.09 \pm 0.06) x 10^{ - 3} .$$

Die Unfallchirurgische Klinik der Medizinischen Hochschule Hannover fuhrte von 1972-1976 185 Transplantationen allogenen Gewebes durch, die sich in 39 Sehnen-, 2 Nerven-, 136 Knochen- und 8 Knochen-Knorpel-Transplantate gliedern. 69 Praparate wurden in Cialit konserviert. Dabei zeigten die 27 Knochen-Transplantate bei unvollstandigem Einbau 6 Infekte. Seit 1974 wird daher eine Kaltekonservierung bei - 70°C durchgefuhrt mit nur 2 Infekten bei 106 Knochentransplantationen. In 60 Fallen wurden mit gutem Ergebnis Hoftkopfe als Spendermaterial verwendet.
