Important mechanisms that lead to features, often complex, in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra are defined and described. It is shown that there is much information in an XPS spectrum that can be obtained by examining these features rather than examining only the shifts of main peaks between different materials. These mechanisms are presented with a focus on describing the underlying chemical and physical phenomena responsible for features of the XPS and on showing how these XPS features can be related to the properties and electronic structure of the material studied. While it is necessary to consider certain quantum mechanical rules, the mathematical formalism is not discussed. However, a general awareness of multiplet splittings, which are a result of angular momentum coupling combined with ligand field and spin–orbit splittings, and of covalent mixings in the metal–ligand bond of oxides is essential to properly interpret the significance of XPS features. A conceptual framework of shake excitation from bonding to anti-bonding orbitals is introduced to provide an understanding of the significance of XPS satellites. While the coupling of theory and measurement is required to extract quantitative information from XPS, it may be possible to obtain useful qualitative information directly from features of the XPS spectra provided that one takes into account more than only shifts of the XPS binding energies. A correct analysis of XPS features may require a careful treatment of many-body effects that distribute intensity over many individual, unresolved final states.

Layered (oxy) hydroxide minerals often possess out-of-plane hydrogen atoms that form hydrogen bonding networks which stabilize the layered structure. However, less is known about how the ordering of these bonds affects the structural stability and solubility of these minerals. Here, we report a new strategy that uses the focused electron beam to probe the effect of differences in hydrogen bonding networks on mineral solubility. In this regard, the dissolution behavior of boehmite (γ-AlOOH) and gibbsite (γ-Al(OH)3) were compared and contrasted in real time via liquid cell electron microscopy. Under identical such conditions, 2D-nanosheets of boehmite (γ-AlOOH) exfoliated from the bulk and then rapidly dissolved, whereas gibbsite was stable. Further, substitution of only 1% Fe(III) for Al(III) in the structure of boehmite inhibited delamination and dissolution. Factors such as pH, radiolytic species, and knock on damage were systematically studied and eliminated as proximal causes for boehmite dissolution. Instead, the creation of electron/hole pairs was considered to be the mechanism that drove dissolution. The widely disparate behaviors of boehmite, gibbsite, and Fe-doped boehmite are discussed in the context of differences in the OH bond strengths, hydrogen bonding networks, and the presence or absence of electron/hole recombination centers.

Two aspects of the electronic structure of actinide oxides that significantly affect the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra are described; these aspects are also important for the materials properties of the oxides. The two aspects considered are: (1) The spin–orbit coupling of the open 5f shell electrons in actinide cations and how this coupling affects the electronic structure. And, (2) the covalent character of the metal oxygen interaction in actinide compounds. Because of this covalent character, there are strong departures from the nominal oxidation states that are significantly larger in core–hole states than in the ground state. The consequences of this covalent character for the XPS are examined. A proper understanding of the way in which they influence the XPS makes it possible to use the XPS to correctly characterize the electronic structure of the oxides.

Economic geologists have studied the Cu contents of biotite for at least a quarter of a century as potential guides for exploration and as clues to the genesis of porphyry copper deposits1–12. These earlier studies used bulk analytical techniques, and a common, although cautious, assumption was that Cu substituted for Fe in the octahedral sites of the biotite. Here we report data from high-resolution and X-ray analytical transmission electron microscopy which demonstrate that anomalous Cu in biotite is present primarily as submicrometre inclusions of pure native Cu in the interlayer regions of the mica. The inclusions occur with greatest density and size in mixed-layer sheet silicate domains which form by alteration of biotite and chlorite. Less abundant and smaller Cu inclusions are associated with biotites that show subtle alteration only on the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy scale. The association of Cu inclusions with alteration domains, coupled with mass-balance considerations, suggests that these sheet silicates act as Cu sinks, and not as sources for primary mineralization.
