In this work, a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) multiparameter sensor for simultaneous determination of refractive index and temperature was manufactured through a novel and low-cost approach. Monitoring these parameters is useful when biosensors are developed by exploiting SPR phenomena. A polymer planar optical structure was realized via inkjet 3D printing, by using photo-curable resins having tailored refractive index for device’s core and cladding, respectively. The multiparameter sensor was fully designed, manufactured, and experimentally tested to check the numerical analyses run on a preliminary phase. In such a way, a temperature resolution equal to about 0.5°C and a refractive index resolution equal to about 2 × 10−4 RIU (refractive index unit) were obtained. Next, even a quality control analysis of the 3D printed surface was carried out by following a novel approach that relies on the profile monitoring technique, with the aim to evaluate the suitability of the design and the geometric accuracy control. In addition, thanks to the cost analysis performed through a properly model, it was proved that the multiparameter sensor designed, manufactured, and tested satisfies the low-cost requirements, being the estimated cost ~ 23 €, which is an absolutely competitive cost if compared with other traditional sensors. In the end, even the performance of the sensor in terms of bulk sensitivity (equal to about 900nm/RIU) resulted to be higher than similar devices already presented in the state-of-the-art, thus proving the validity of the developed SPR multiparameter sensor both in economic and performance terms. Objective: to compare outcomes of cataract surgery combined with either anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (anti-VEGF) therapy or dexamethasone implant (DEX) in patients with diabetic macular oedema (DMO). Methods: Pubmed and Embase databases were searched for studies reporting outcomes of diabetic cataract surgery combined with either anti-VEGF or DEX, with a follow-up ≥3 months. The primary outcome was the mean change in central macular thickness (CMT). Mean change in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was considered as a secondary outcome. The mean difference between baseline and post-treatment values (MD) with 95%-Confidence Interval (95%CI) was calculated and meta-analyses were performed. Results: ninteen studies were included, 8 in the DEX group and 11 in the anti-VEGF group. A significant reduction of macular thickness was shown in the DEX group at 3 months (MD = −98.35 µm; 95% CI, −147.15/−49.54), while mean CMT change was non-significant in the anti-VEGF group (MD = −21.61 µm; 95% CI, −59.46/16.24; test of group differences, P < 0.001). At 3 months, no difference in visual gain was found between the two groups (P = 0.13). Conclusions: in DMO patients, cataract surgery combined with DEX seems to provide better anatomical outcomes compared with cataract surgery combined with anti-VEGF therapy. However, our evidence was limited by significant heterogeneity. Randomised trials comparing these two different combined approaches are warranted.

Purpose: To describe functional and histopathological findings after macular peeling using different dyes. Methods: Prospective, randomized, comparative, interventional, and immunohistochemical study. Forty-five eyes from 45 patients with idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) underwent pars plana chromovitrectomy with ERM and inner limiting membrane (ILM) using trypan blue 0.15% + brilliant blue 0.05% + lutein 2% in group 1 (15 eyes), trypan blue 0.15% + brilliant blue 0.025% + polyethylene glycol 3350 4% in group 2 (15 eyes), and indocyanine green 0.05% in group 3 (15 eyes). We evaluated visual acuity (VA) and macular sensitivity (MS) preoperatively, 1, 3, and 6 months after surgery. The expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and neurofilament protein (NF) was assessed immunohistochemically on the ILMs peeled as markers of glial and neuronal cells. Results: In group 1, both mean VA and MS were significantly better at 1 and 3 months after surgery (P < 0.05), whereas no significant difference was found after 6 months. GFAP and NF expression was significantly lower in group 1 (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The ERM/ILM peeling is thought to rip off the intraretinal tissue, based on the amounts of GFAP and NF in the specimens. The use of lutein dyes reduces iatrogenic stress to the retinal tissue and allows a faster functional recovery in the first 3 months after surgery, suggesting a less iatrogenic adhesion to the retinal tissue

Myrtaceae Juss. is a very large family of flowering plants, that are a valuable source of bioactive compounds. From the phytochemical point of view, apart from ubiquitous tannins, flavonoid derivatives and volatile oils, Myrtaceae plants are very rich in phloroglucinol derivatives, divided in two principal subclasses: oligomeric acylphloroglucinols and phloroglucinol-terpene adducts. Despite this large structural variability, many studies on phloroglucinols from the Myrtaceae have focused on unique bioactive acylphloroglucinol compounds, named myrtucommulones. Nevertheless, many studies also reported other interesting phloroglucinol derivatives. Therefore, in this review, a comprehensive description of the chemical features of acylphloroglucinols and meroterpenoid-acylphloroglucinols from the Myrtaceae family is presented along with their biological activities. Moreover, since myrtucommulones and their derivatives have become attractive targets for organic chemists, thanks to their structural features and biological activities, relevant approaches and synthetic procedures are herewith discussed.

Introduction/aims Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is an acute infarction of the prelaminar anterior optic disc, resulting from the occlusion of posterior ciliary arteries. Here, we evaluated the correlation between structural and vascular features in a case of resolved NAION. Methods Observational case report. Results A 50-year-old male patient was referred at an Eye clinic due to an altitudinal visual field defect in the left eye, occurred 9 months before. Fundus examination was unremarkable, while structural SD-OCT reveals retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), ganglion cell complex (GCC) thinning associated with reduction of peripapillary vascular density at OCT Angiography. Discussion We found a precise spatial correlation among RNFL and GCC thinning, peripapillary vascular reduction and visual field defects. This case demonstrates that OCTA represents a new, valid and non-invasive imaging technique in the diagnosis and follow-up of NAION, even after the resolution of the acute phase, in the absence of clinical signs at fundus examination.

The last decade has witnessed important advancements in the field of computer vision and scene understanding, enabling applications such us autonomous vehicles. Radar is a commonly adopted sensor in automotive industry, but its suitability to machine learning techniques still remains an open question. In this work, we propose a neural network (NN) based solution to efficiently process radar data. We introduce RadarPCNN, an architecture specifically designed for performing semantic segmentation on radar point clouds. It uses PointNet$$++$$ + + as a building-block—enhancing the sampling stage with mean-shift—and an attention mechanism to fuse information. Additionally, we propose a machine learning radar pre-processing module that confers the network the ability to learn from radar features. We show that our solutions are effective, yielding superior performance than the state-of-the-art.

Galdieria is a photosynthetic unicellular protist, inhabiting thermoacidic environments around the world. The synchronicity of these thermoacidophilic algae with their extreme habitats makes them unable to thrive in different ecological conditions. The genetic structure of Galdieria populations has not yet been studied. In this report, the level of genetic diversity and struc- ture of five Galdieria populations from Iceland were assessed through both random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, and a partial calmodulin gene fragment (previously used to assess the population structure of these extremophilic algae). The level of population differentiation from both the RAPD and CaM markers was estimated using PLP, percentage of polymorphic loci; H, the expected heterozygosity; I, Shannon’s information index, Ks, Kst. The migration ability of the Galdieria populations was suggested by the high level of genetic variations scored within each Galdieria population and by the small number of polymorphisms detected between the different Icelandic populations. The low genetic diversity between the two species was highlighted by RAPD and calmodulin markers, suggesting for the first time an interspecific genetic flow between species as strategy to evolve in stressful environments. Heterotrophic components of biofilms on wood artefacts were studied at the Conservation Laboratory for Wood Artefacts of the University Suor Orsola Benincasa of Naples, Italy. The aim of the study was to add new information on the micro-habitats represented by biofilms formed by wood-dwelling organisms. Light and electron microscopy of histological features of woods used to make the artefacts showed that the woods belonged to species of lime (Tilia sp.), poplar (Populus sp.) and pear (Pyrus sp.). A Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis analysis performed on heterotrophic microorganisms colonizing the artefacts led to identify four species of bacteria, namely Bacillus cereus, B. mycoides, B. subtilis and Microbacterium oleivorans, and seven species of fungi, namely Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus fumigans, A. versicolor, Cladosporium cladosporioides, C. oxysporum, Fusarium oxysporum and Penicillium chrysogenum. Based on its morphological features, an insect found on some artefacts was identified as the xylophagous beetle Nicobium castaneum (Anobiidae). The influence of wood type and environmental conditions on the diversity of microorganisms was discussed.

Due to their peculiar orbits, they provide key constraints to the Solar System evolution models. Despite numerous dedicated observational efforts in the last decade, asteroid 2010 TK7 has been the only known Earth Trojan thus far. Here we confirm that the recently discovered 2020 XL5 is the second transient Earth Trojan known. To study its orbit, we used archival data from 2012 to 2019 and observed the object in 2021 from three ground-based observatories. Our study of its orbital stability shows that 2020 XL5 will remain in L4 for at least 4 000 years. With a photometric analysis we estimate its absolute magnitude to be Hr=18.58+0.16−0.15, and color indices suggestive of a C-complex taxonomy. We conducted a meta-analysis of real-world studies on the 0.19 mg Fluocinolone Acetonide (FAc) intravitreal implant for chronic diabetic macular oedema (DMO), comparing these findings with the Fluocinolone Acetonide for Diabetic Macular Edema (FAME) study. The primary outcome was mean change of best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 24 months. Secondary outcomes were 36-month mean BCVA, mean central macular thickness (CMT) change, rates of eyes receiving supplementary intravitreal therapy, cataract surgery, intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering drops and glaucoma surgery. Mean differences (MDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Nine real-world studies were included. The FAc implant yielded a significantly improved BCVA at 24 and 36 months (24-month MD = 4.52; 95% CI 2.56–6.48; 36-month MD = 8.10; 95% CI 6.34–9.86). These findings were comparable with the FAME study. The FAc implant yielded significantly reduced 24- and 36-month CMT. Pooled proportions of cataract surgery, IOP-lowering drops and glaucoma surgery were 39%, 27% and 3%, respectively, all lower than the FAME study. Pooled estimate of supplementary intravitreal therapy was 39%, higher than the 15.2% of the FAME study. This meta-analysis of real-world studies confirms favorable visual and anatomical outcomes following FAc insert for chronic DMO. In real-life studies more than one third of patients received supplementary intravitreal therapy, an issue that needs to be further explored.

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is still one of the main causes of visual impairment. Repeated intravitreal injections of ranibizumab are considered the gold standard treatment, but the efficacy in patients with prominent cystic characteristics remains uncertain. In diabetic retinas, the identification of both antero-posterior and, particularly, tangential tractions is crucial to prevent misdiagnosis of tractional and refractory DME, and therefore to prevent poor treatment outcomes. The treatment of tractional DME with anti-VEGF injections could be poorly effective due to the influence of a tractional force. Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is a surgical procedure that has been widely used in the treatment of diffuse and refractory DME. Anatomical improvement, although stable and immediate, did not result in visual improvement. PPV with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling for the treatment of non-tractional DME in patients with prominent cysts (> 390 μm) causes subfoveal atrophy, defined as "floor effect". Epiretinal tangential forces and intraretinal change evaluation by SD-OCT of non-tractional DME are essential for determining appropriate management.

The conservation of the works of art represent a topic of global interest. The development of effective tools based on advanced technology for analysing and monitoring their health-state is essential to assuring their preservation. In fact, detecting and preventing the formation of defective areas or assessing for an accurate pre-restoration analysis are the main objectives of non-destructive inspection. Active thermography is a well-known non-invasive imaging technique and reliable tool for providing a fast and low-cost analysis of a work of art. In this study we combine the potential of Principal Component Thermography and of Absolute Thermal Contrast to analyse thermal images acquired in-situ on a poplar panel painting representing an original artwork dating in the end of XVI century. We first optimized the thermal stimulation parameters in the laboratory using special phantom samples. These samples were specially made by reproducing in high fidelity the structural properties and materials of the artwork in order to perform effectively the preliminary tests. Then we moved the equipment in-situ by performing the non-destructive inspection directly on the real artwork. We have developed a specific experimental protocol that combines active thermography with two specific and appropriate image processing modalities that allowed us the effective detection of various types of defects in the painting layer. We report a complete analysis and deep discussion concerning the detection and characterization of the defects. Results show that our diagnostic protocol is a powerful tool in assessing the pre-restoration health-state and suitable for in situ analysis of wood artworks.

Our investigation aims to understand the genetic structure and evolutionary history of Petagnaea gussonei, an ancient and endangered species belonging to the Saniculoideae subfamily (Apiaceae). It is paleoendemic to Sicily, with a small number of populations in the Nebrodi Mountains. A total of seven chloroplast microsatellite repeat loci and 12 AFLP primer combinations were used to screen 115 individuals corresponding to 17 populations. More organizational leaders are recognizing that their greatest competitive advantage is the knowledge base of their employees and for organizations to thrive knowledge management (KM) systems need to be in place that encourage the natural interplay and flow of tacit and explicit knowledge. Approaching KM through the lens of the knowledge life cycle allows for the design and development of KM solutions that are systemic and address the dynamic nature of organizational knowledge. In this paper we provide a review of the literature regarding how organizational knowledge may be studied and propose a methodological framework for investigating the knowledge life cycle. To illustrate the framework we present a recent case study in which it was successfully used. This framework is intended to be useful to learning and performance improvement professionals who work in organizational KM as well as to researchers who wish to conduct further research in this area.

Recent studies used impression cytology with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to study the conjunctival surface of bovine eyes and normal human eyes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use impression cytology and SEM (ICSEM) in patients affected by tear film abnormalities. Forty-five patients were divided into three groups according to mild, moderate or severe subjective sensation of dry eye. Fifteen asymptomatic subjects served as control group. In all patients the tear film was evaluated with break-up time (BUT), Schirmer's, and Ferning test, whereas conjunctival epithelium was evaluated with impression cytology and optic microscopy (ICOM), and ICSEM. The Spearman rank correlation test was used to compare the outcome of these examinations with the subjective sensation of dry eye in each group, and to identify correlations among the five tests.
