The macroalgal blooms of floating brown algae Sargassum horneri are increasing in the Yellow and East China Seas during the past few years. However, the annual pattern of Sargassum bloom is not well characterized. To study the developing pattern and explore the impacts from hydro-meteorologic environment, high resolution satellite imageries were used to monitor the distribution, coverage and drifting of the pelagic Sargassum rafts in the Yellow and East China Seas from September 2019 to August 2020. Sargassum blooms were detected from October 2019 to June 2020 and presented two successive drifting paths that both initiated from around 37°N. The first path spanned smaller spatial scale and shorter period, starting with a bloom of 3 km2 distribution area near the eastern tip of Shandong Peninsular in late October 2019 and drifted southwards, hit the Pyropia aquaculture area in early January 2020, then vanished in the northwest of East China Sea (ca. 32°N) around end of January. The second path began with a large distribution area of 23 000 km2 east of 123°E in late January 2020, firstly moved southwards in the central Yellow and northern East China Seas (north of 29°N) till late April, then turned northwards with monsoon wind and vanished in mid-June. The mean sea surface temperature of 8°C to 20°C in the Sargassum bloom areas corresponded to in situ observed temperature range for vegetative growth and floating of S. horneri. The surface temperature higher than 22°C in July-September prohibits Sargassum blooming or completing life cycle. The results provide insights to the future management of Sargassum blooms. Further studies are needed to validate the pattern and source of annual Sargassum bloom in the Yellow and East China Seas.

Trait-based classifications can efficiently capture species’ responses to environmental gradients and their impacts on ecosystem functioning. Thus, the clustering of phytoplankton species into functional groups can improve the understanding of their relationships with the environment and help to predict their response to environmental changes. Accordingly, this study aimed to create habitat templates of Reynolds phytoplankton functional groups (RFGs) in tropical drinking water reservoirs to describe, explain, and predict their occurrence and formation of blooms. We analyzed the structure of RFGs in 10 tropical reservoirs, in humid and semiarid regions of Brazil, and defined their relationships with 10 environmental variables. We designated the habitat template based on niche differentiation, thresholds for the occurrences and bloom formation, cluster analyses, and generalized additive models. We identified 136 species, assembled in 20 RFGs. Six groups of habitat templates were recognized based on environmental conditions and dominant RFGs, usually represented by bloom-forming species of cyanobacteria, dinoflagellates, green algae, and diatoms. The functional groups D, X1, and P presented the most restrictive occurrences, while RFGs M and SN displayed the widest, occurring in almost all sets of conditions. Moreover, salinity was the best predictor of RFGs’ biomass (higher R2), followed by depth, soluble reactive phosphorus, irradiance, water transparency, and dissolved inorganic nitrogen. Our approach improves the understanding of how RFGs interact with environmental gradients in tropical reservoirs, helping water managers to adopt sustainable practices to control algal blooms, based on predictions of the future state of dominance.

Key message We identified two poplar clones of the same species as highly comparable, yet clones of two further species of the same genus to be distinctly different regarding multiple morphological and ecophysiological traits. Abstract Leaf morphology, wax composition, and residual (cuticular) transpiration of four poplar clones (two clones of the hybrid species P. × canescens, P. trichocarpa, and P. euphratica) were monitored from the beginning to end of the growing season 2020. A pronounced epicuticular wax coverage was found only with P. euphratica. As the most prominent substance classes of cuticular wax primary alcohols, alkanes and esters were identified with P. × canescens and P. trichocarpa, whereas esters and alkanes were completely lacking in P. euphratica. Wax amounts were slightly decreasing during the season and significantly lower wax amounts were found for newly formed leaves in summer compared to leaves of the same age formed in spring. Residual (cuticular) transpiration was about five to tenfold lower for P. × canescens compared with the two other poplar species. Interestingly, with three of the four investigated species, newly formed leaves in summer had lower wax coverages and lower rates of residual (cuticular) transpiration compared to leaves of exactly the same age formed in spring. Our findings were especially surprising with P. euphratica, representing the only one of the four investigated poplar species naturally growing in very dry and hot climates in Central Asia. Instead of developing very low rates of residual (cuticular) transpiration, it seems to be of major advantage for P. euphratica to develop a pronounced epicuticular wax bloom efficiently reflecting light.

The mechanism that controls particulate organic carbon (POC) flux in the deep sea differs depending on the season and sea. The POC produced in the western subarctic North Pacific are known to be transported to the deep sea efficiently, but the direct relationship between the POC flux and physical processes is still unclear. In this study, we evaluated the effect of mesoscale eddies on POC flux in the western subarctic North Pacific. The seasonal and interannual variabilities of POC flux were investigated using data from a time-series sediment trap deployed at 4810 m at station K2 (47°N, 160°E) from 2005 to 2018. POC flux was high during May–November, appearing to reflect spring and fall blooms at the ocean surface. POC flux also showed interannual variability, with twelve peaks that were mostly affected by enhanced bloom just before the peak. Nine peaks of the twelve peaks were affected by mesoscale eddies, which enhanced bloom around K2 by extending the area with a high chlorophyll-a concentration along the coastal region into the offshore region, suggesting that mesoscale eddies strongly impact the interannual variability of POC flux at K2.

A field experiment was carried out in mudflats adjacent to the Yellow Sea, China, amended with sewage sludge and vermicompost by one-time input at different rates to reveal the fates of tetracycline resistance genes (TRGs) and their potential hosts in the soils. Quantitative PCR results showed that soils added with either sludge or vermicompost had more abundant TRGs compared with the non-fertilized soil. This situation was more obvious in sludge fertilized soils especially at high application rates. Vermicompost exhibited a promising outlook for improvement of the mudflats. The abundances of intI1 in the non-fertilized soils were significantly higher than those in fertilizers and fertilized soils. The potential hosts for intI1 were not shared with other TRGs-contained hosts, indicating that intI1 had little effects on the dissemination of TRGs in the mudflats. Moreover, the exclusive hosts for TRGs in fertilizers were not higher than those in the non-fertilized soils, illustrating little effects of fertilization on the introduction of exogenous TRGs into soil. The shared hosts between soil and fertilizers were highest among four possible sources, contributing vastly to the bloom of TRGs following fertilization. It was also shown that different organic fertilizers caused distinct categories of shared potential hosts for TRGs. RDA analysis further indicated that the abundances of the shared potential hosts were affected by soil nutrients. These results suggested that the development of TRGs in soil following fertilization depended on the shared potential hosts with similar ecological niches between soil and fertilizers.

Antarctic sea-ice extent, primary productivity and ocean circulation represent interconnected systems that form important components of the global carbon cycle. Subdecadal to centennial-scale variability can influence the characteristics and interactions of these systems, but observational records are too short to evaluate the impacts of this variability over longer timescales. Here, we use a 170-m-long sediment core collected from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1357B, offshore Adélie Land, East Antarctica to disentangle the impacts of sea ice and subdecadal climate variability on phytoplankton bloom frequency over the last ~11,400 years. We apply X-ray computed tomography, Ice Proxy for the Southern Ocean with 25 carbon atoms, diatom, physical property and geochemical analyses to the core, which contains an annually resolved, continuously laminated archive of phytoplankton bloom events. Bloom events occurred annually to biennially through most of the Holocene, but became less frequent (~2–7 years) at ~4.5 ka when coastal sea ice intensified. We propose that coastal sea-ice intensification subdued annual sea-ice break-out, causing an increased sensitivity of sea-ice dynamics to subdecadal climate modes, leading to a subdecadal frequency of bloom events. Production and use of proteins is under strong selection in microbes, but it is unclear how proteome-level traits relate to ecological strategies. We identified and quantified proteomic traits of eukaryotic microbes and bacteria through an Antarctic phytoplankton bloom using in situ metaproteomics. Different taxa, rather than different environmental conditions, formed distinct clusters based on their ribosomal and photosynthetic proteomic proportions, and we propose that these characteristics relate to ecological differences. We defined and used a proteomic proxy for regulatory cost, which showed that SAR11 had the lowest regulatory cost of any taxa we observed at our summertime Southern Ocean study site. Haptophytes had lower regulatory cost than diatoms, which may underpin haptophyte-to-diatom bloom progression in the Ross Sea. We were able to make these proteomic trait inferences by assessing various sources of bias in metaproteomics, providing practical recommendations for researchers in the field. We have quantified several proteomic traits (ribosomal and photosynthetic proteomic proportions, regulatory cost) in eukaryotic and bacterial taxa, which can then be incorporated into trait-based models of microbial communities that reflect resource allocation strategies.

We investigated the transfer of radiocesium and its behavior in living cells and cellular debris in a Chlamydomonas spp. bloom in a pond located approximately 5 km from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. A microalgal bloom in the pond was the dominant factor in determining the radiocesium concentration (Bq/L) of the > 0.45 μm pond water fraction. To understand the community structure and the functional dynamics of phytoplankton over the long term, it is essential to identify rapid changes in the properties of Antarctic phytoplankton communities in relation to ongoing changes in environmental factors due to climate change. This study investigated short-term variability in the phytoplankton biomass and its composition over the summer of 2010 when the sea surface temperature was lowest and chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentrations were the highest, relative to a 15-year monitoring period (1996–2011). We assessed the intraseasonal variability of the phytoplankton assemblage structure and its synchrony with changes in the main environmental variables in Marian Cove of King George Island, Antarctica. The frequency and magnitude of large ulvoid macroalgal blooms (green tides) have increased in recent years, causing concern for the collapse of benthic ecosystems. Ulva intestinalis is commonly considered a bloom-forming species and it is necessary to understand how variation in environmental conditions affects its ecophysiology in order to predict its bloom potential. To address this, we conducted a laboratory experiment to examine how variation in abiotic factors influences early development and growth in U. intestinalis. Specifically, germling growth characteristics were observed in primary thallus disks (PTD) and early filamentous stages (EFS) under exposure to gradients in salinity, temperature, and light and in concentrations of ammonium and phosphate over a period of 27 days. Our results show that growth in EFS occurred under all salinity and temperature conditions except for the highest salinity (S = 50) and temperature (25 °C) conditions examined. The invasive freshwater dinoflagellate Ceratium furcoides is extending its distribution in South America with increasing environmental impacts associated with its bloom. We here report two events related to C. furcoides distribution expansion in Uruguay: (1) the main environmental drivers (physical and chemical factors, extreme wind events and zooplankton composition) of the first appearance and bloom of C. furcoides in 2012 in a subtropical eutrophic shallow lake (Lake Blanca, Uruguay); and (2) a fish kill event of Prochilodus lineatus observed during a bloom of C. furcoides in 2016 in a deep eutrophic lake (Puente de las Americas, Uruguay). The bloom of C. furcoides in Lake Blanca started in spring 2012 (December) after a clear water period with high phytoplankton species replacement after a cyanobacterial bloom of Raphidiopsis raciborskii. Extreme wind during this period may have initiated the bloom of C. furcoides by enhanced cysts resuspension from the sediments. High nutrient availability and low zooplankton grazing, further allowed C. furcoides to expand and reach over 96% of the phytoplankton biomass. In Lake Puente de las Americas, we registered the fish kill of the large-sized benthic Prochilodus lineatus during a bloom of C. furcoides. This bloom caused the oxygen depletion in the hypolimnion and the gills from these fish exhibited massive accumulations of C. furcoides cells compared to the ones collected in non-bloom conditions. Concurring to other studies our results suggest that the C. furcoides bloom likely caused the fish kill of P. lineatus by asphyxia. Our study is the earliest register of a bloom of C. furcoides in Uruguay (in 2012) and discusses the potential environmental effects of its bloom in subtropical lakes.

The flow, solidification, and solute transport behaviors in the 380 × 280 mm2 bloom center under the effect of final electromagnetic stirring (F-EMS) were investigated using a mathematical model. The results of nail shooting tests and infrared carbon-sulfur analyses are in good agreement with the simulated solidification and carbon concentration results. When F-EMS was installed 13.6 m below the meniscus with a frequency of 8.0 Hz, the maximum tangential velocity at the solidification front increased from 0.013 m/s to 0.023 m/s, and the liquid fraction at the computational outlet decreased from 0.7827 to 0.7256 as the current intensity increased from 300 A to 600 A. For each 100 A increase in the current intensity, the temperature of the mushy steel in the bloom center decreased by an additional 2.4 K. When the current intensity was maintained between 300 A and 400 A, the negative segregation band in the newly solidified shell was eliminated, the uniformity of the carbon distribution around the bloom center was enhanced, and the centerline segregation was noticeably improved.

The Chukchi Sea is the inflow shelf between the Arctic and the Pacific. A comprehensive research on algal dynamics, physical–biological interactions, and impacts on nutrient drawdown was conducted in summer 2010. The study found a phytoplankton bloom with chlorophyll a (Chla) > 10 mg m−3 at ice edge in July. There were 36 shared algal species in both sea ice and open water, and those species dominated numerically both environments highlighting the seeding role of ice algae for the phytoplankton bloom. The succession pattern of diatom genera at three phases from sea-ice to open-water bloom and post-bloom conditions was revealed, and the phytoplankton abundance was positively correlated with the concentration of > 20 µm fractionated Chla. An anticyclonic eddy was detected in July and significantly reduced nutrient inventories in the impacted area relative to historical values. Phytoplankton composition was an important factor for both variable drawdown ratios of silicate to dissolved inorganic nitrogen (1.31–3.37) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen to dissolved inorganic phosphorus (7.62–12.32); however, both ratios also changed between July and August. The results indicated highly dynamic biogeochemical processes during the summer. In addition, the lower bound of silicate drawdown was comparable to the amount imported through the Bering Strait, indicating the Chukchi Sea is a significant silicate sink.

At the end of May 2008, a massive bloom of macroalgae occurred in the western Yellow Sea off China and lasted for nearly two months, and annual blooms have occurred since then on. During bloom period, the surface-drifting macroalgae have showed an interesting pattern dominated by a banded structure, and the distance between neighboring bands ranged from hundreds of meters to about 6 km with a peak at 1–1.5 km, which is an order of higher than the scale of Langmuir circulation of 50–100 m. In order to explain this new phenomenon, ocean current data obtained from a Doppler current profiler off Qingdao was used to implement stability analysis. By numerically solving the resulting differential Orr-Sommerfeld equation, the secondary circulation induced from the instability of the Emkan current was found to fit well with the observed spatial scale of the surface-drifting macroalgae’s banded structure. As the wind driven Emkan current exist universally in the global ocean, it is reasonable to conclude that the banded structure with kilometers distance between adjoining bands is ubiquitous. We found a new circulation in the upper ocean which is important for exchange of energy, materials and gas between the upper ocean and subsurface layer.

It is difficult to measure temperature changes inside steel blooms during steel production, so reliable numerical simulations are important for process optimization. In this work, thermocouples were located within a production reheating furnace and embedded inside a 72LX steel bloom. The temperature distributions within the bloom and the furnace as the bloom passed through the furnace were measured. These data were used to establish a two-dimensional model, and the heat transfer coefficients during the production process were obtained by inverse calculation. During bloom heating, we found a large difference between the upper and lower furnace temperatures in the third heating stage. The simulated values of the temperature field were in good agreement with the measured values, which indicates that the temperature field model for the production process was effectively established.

To better understand the effect of typhoons on the harmful alga Cochlodinium polykrikoides, we investigated cell population dynamics in relation to hydrographic conditions in Korean coastal waters before and after the passage of typhoons. After typhoon Lingling passed through the Yellow Sea, significant accumulation of C. polykrikoides on the southern coast of Namhae Island was associated with southerly winds on September 8, 2019. Similar to field observations of red tide, a particle transport model simulation showed that the virtual particles were greatly influenced by wind-driven currents associated with typhoons, particularly when diel vertical migration was included in the model. However, a bloom of C. polykrikoides disappeared immediately after the passage of typhoon Tapah on September 23, 2019. Because of the different patterns of bloom behavior after the passage of these typhoons, characteristics of other typhoons that affected the Korean peninsula during previous C. polykrikoides blooms were investigated. Analysis of typhoon properties including wind direction, precipitation, and wave height and energy suggested that high wave energy during the passage of a typhoon plays a critical role in the termination of C. polykrikoides blooms, because of its generation of high turbulence relative to other factors. In our study, the wave energy associated with typhoon Tapah (753.6 kJ m−2 over 48 h) was much higher than that associated with typhoon Lingling (441.7 kJ m−2 over 48 h). The results indicate that typhoons have an important role in determining the accumulation and termination of C. polykrikoides blooms through the physical effects of wind direction and wave energy.

Green tides have been increasing in frequency and severity in coastal areas in recent years, and thus, the adverse effects of green tides on the environment have attracted much research attention. Allelopathy is one of the most significant effects of green tide algae on the surrounding organisms. In this study, a series of experiments were developed to fully investigate the allelopathic effects of the green tide alga Ulva linza on two common coastal phytoplankton species and to isolate and identify the chemical compositions of the allelochemicals. Our results indicated that the fresh tissue, dry powder, and aqueous extracts all inhibited the population growth of the two experimental phytoplankton species, indicating the occurrence of allelopathy; further analysis of the allelochemicals identified multiple kinds of fatty acids as allelopathic compounds, in which the most abundant ones were hexadecanoic acid; 9Z, 12Z, 15Z-octadecatetrienoic acid; and 9E-octadecenoic acid. Our findings enrich the database for research on allelopathy between marine green tide algae and phytoplankton. Both algae and phytoplankton could increase their own competitive abilities during bloom formation, thereby changing the phytoplankton community structure.

Detailed seasonal analyses of phytoplankton assemblages’ composition were performed on long-term datasets (20 years) of two oligotrophic Mediterranean lagoons (Diana and Urbino), in order to test if phytoplankton community and bloom events patterns rely on a seasonal basis. Our results highlight a similar phytoplankton composition between the lagoons, but different patterns in terms of phytoplankton abundances, of timing, magnitude and occurrence of Taxonomic Units, and of bloom events occurrence. Dominant diatoms group showed a seasonal repartition, with highest contribution of Skeletonema sp. during winter and spring, some other groups emerging in warmer seasons (e.g. Chaetoceros spp.), or not showing marked seasonality (e.g. Pseudo-nitzschia spp.). Dinoflagellates’ abundances were higher during autumn, besides exhibiting punctual proliferations over the year. Salinity was the strongest environmental parameter in controlling Diana lagoon phytoplankton community, while Urbino community was mostly controlled by turbidity. A worrying evolution of the toxic diatom Pseudo-nitzschia spp., linked to salinity and temperature changes, was detected in both lagoons. We further demonstrated changes in the phytoplankton community are ongoing in these lagoons, despite their contrasting human pressure contexts, indicating that serious impacts on phytoplankton dynamics and blooms triggering in Mediterranean lagoons shall be foreseen within the current and forecasted climate change scenarios.

Fire blight of apples (Erwinia amylovora) can be a serious disease depending on production area and year. Bloom is the most frequent starting point for infection and the primary focus for sprays which can prevent infection, or of growth regulators such as prohexadione-Ca (ProCa) to limit spread. Because of the sporadic cases, many growers opt to forego bloom sprays when disease pressure is low. When symptoms do appear, quickly pruning out affected branches is currently the most effective control measure. Our goal was to determine if ProCa applied when symptoms appear, instead of during bloom when infection risks are predicted, could be used to limit disease spread, and if this would interact with summer symptom removal. The study was carried out in 2018 and 2019 at the IRDA orchard in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec. Plots inoculated during bloom were allocated to treatments in which diseased branches were either pruned during summer or only in winter, and trees sprayed with ProCa starting at bloom, when symptoms appeared, or not. Potential for disease progression was assessed by inoculating shoots and rating them for disease severity and ooze production. Significantly less wood was removed from trees pruned during the summer as opposed to winter, but total yield was reduced. ProCa had no effect on the amount of dead wood pruned, but still reduced disease severity. We found that ProCa reduced ooze on inoculated shoots and that post symptom timing was as effective as the bloom spray. Delaying sprays until symptoms appear could become an alternative strategy to reduce summer spread of fire blight.

A ten-year chlorophyll-a concentration dataset from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) were used to analyze the variation of phytoplankton biomass and its potential relation with climate in the East China Sea. The result indicated that the phytoplankton biomass generally had a regular pattern every year, and phytoplankton bloom mainly occurred between May and July. The highest phytoplankton biomass appeared near the Yangtze River Estuary. The lowest phytoplankton biomass located near the Taiwan Strait. In general, the starting bloom time was earlier in the south than in the north, and the span time of the former was also longer. During the recent ten years, the phytoplankton biomass around the Yangtze River Estuary decreased obviously. The change of phytoplankton biomass was found to be related with the Nino 3.4 Index. The correlation between the intensity of phytoplankton bloom with the number and square of red tide were 0.63 and 0.74, respectively.

There is increasing focus on the frequency of jellyfish blooms in the Northeast Atlantic because of negative interactions with humans. However, uncertainty exists as to whether perceptions of increasing bloom frequencies reflect reality due to limitations within long-term population trend data. This study, therefore, developed and applied a semi-quantitative mapping approach to visualise bloom suitability based on the physiological tolerances of seven jellyfish to ocean temperature, salinity and a prey index across the Northeast Atlantic. A 10% increase and a 10% decrease in the environmental parameters was then applied to the maps to assess model sensitivity and the potential influence of environmental change on bloom suitability. The study found that optimal physiological temperatures and salinities combined with peaks in prey abundance drove higher bloom suitability and determined distribution. Several locations predicted to be at high risk of bloom occurrence off British and Irish coasts were found to coincide with areas of high anthropogenic activity that could be impacted by blooms. In the absence of long-term datasets on jellyfish population dynamics, the results and methods developed in this study allow an understanding of historic bloom events and predictions of future populations that will be useful in informing monitoring and management.

While warming and eutrophication have increased the frequency and magnitude of harmful cyanobacterial blooms globally, the scenario for many eutrophic tropical freshwaters is a perennial year-round bloom. Yet, the drivers of persistent blooms are less understood when conditions such as light, temperature, and nutrients favor cyanobacteria growth year-round, and especially in regions facing recurrent periods of drought. In order to understand the drivers of cyanobacteria dominance, we assessed the abiotic conditions related to the abundance and dominance of the two dominant bloom-forming genera Raphidiopsis and Microcystis, in six shallow, man-made lakes located in the semiarid Northeastern region of Brazil during a prolonged regional drought. Lower water level corresponded to increased phosphorous and nitrogen concentration and, consequently, phytoplankton biomass. Cyanobacterial biomass was also proportional to phosphorus concentrations during year-round blooms. Yet, the two dominant cyanobacterial genera, Raphidiopsis and Microcystis, seldom co-occurred temporally and the switch between them was driven by water transparency. Our results illustrate the effects of drought induced water level reductions on the biomass and composition of cyanobacterial blooms in tropical shallow man-made lakes. Given the ideal year-round conditions (i.e., high light and temperature), droughts may be expected to intensify the risk and multitude of problems associated with eutrophication.

A 4-year (2015–2018) weekly to bi-weekly time series of phytoplankton biomass and composition derived from high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) phytoplankton pigments and Chemtax analysis is presented and used to investigate phytoplankton community dynamics at a station in the northern Strait of Georgia (NSoG). Through the time series, blooms were largely dominated by diatoms, which formed the bulk of annual biomass. Spring diatom bloom timing and magnitude varied widely and appears to have been driven by complex interactions of solar radiation, wind, stratification, and grazing. In turn, post-spring diatom blooms were mostly associated with nutrient renewal to the surface layer as suggested by redundancy analysis (RDA), which showed inverse relationships between diatoms and temperature and stratification. A single non-diatom bloom in July 2016, dominated by the silicoflagellate, Dictyocha sp., was the time series maximum biomass and occurred under warm, stratified conditions and a freshening of the surface layer: The Chemtax dictyochophyte group was positively linked to temperature and stratification through RDA. Outside of bloom conditions, diverse communities emerged with prasinophytes and cryptophytes showing persistent contributions and their highest biomass during summer. Uniquely, these groups often persisted through nutrient renewal and drawdown events typically associated with diatom blooms and suggestive of high grazing pressure and nutrient regeneration. The prevalence of these groups through diverse conditions likely precluded statistical links with environmental drivers. This time series is the first of its kind for the NSoG, creates a baseline for future analyses, and highlights the contributions by small species, particularly prasinophytes, to regional phytoplankton communities.

Diatoms are the reservoir of bioactive compounds which have immense application in nutrition, industrial commodities and ecological studies. In the oceans, diatoms form a large bloom of silica under favourable conditions, whereas, in lentic and lotic systems, they colonize according to seasonal disturbances. Notably, the survival of diatoms in a stressed environment is because of their uniqueness; therefore, diatoms serve as an ideal candidate to understand the evolutionary paradigm and successional dynamics. This review outlines the biological uniqueness of diatoms, their role in biogeochemical cycles and the recolonization pattern of diatoms in anthropic disturbed habitats. Furthermore, a detailed discussion on different technologies for extracting valuable biomolecules with an emphasis on lipid extraction has been carried out. Moreover, the diatom-based photosynthetic biorefinery approach for a better understanding of the renewable usage of biomass is done.

Scyphozoan jellyfish blooms display high interannual variability in terms of timing of appearance and size of the bloom. To understand the causes of this variability, the conditions experienced by the polyps prior to the production of ephyrae in the spring were examined. Polyps reared from planula larvae of Aurelia aurita medusae collected from southern England (50°49′58.8; − 1°05′36.9) were incubated under orthogonal combinations of temperature (4, 7, 10 °C) and duration (2, 4, 6, 8 weeks), representing the range of winter conditions in that region, before experiencing an increase to 13 °C. Timing and success of strobilation were recorded. No significant production of ephyrae was observed in any of the 2- and 4-week incubations, or in any 10 °C incubation. Time to first ephyra release decreased with longer winter incubations, and more ephyrae were produced following longer and colder winter simulations. This experiment indicates that A. aurita requires a minimum period of cooler temperatures to strobilate, and contradicts claims that jellyfish populations will be more prevalent in warming oceans, specifically in the context of warmer winter conditions. Such investigations on population-specific ontogeny highlights the need to examine each life stage separately as well as in the context of its environment.

Red snow caused by spherical cysts can be found worldwide, while an orange snow phenomenon caused by spherical cells is restricted to (Sub-)Arctic climates. Both bloom types, occurring in the same localities at Svalbard, were compared ecophysiologically. Using a combination of molecular markers and light- and transmission electron microscopy, cells were identified as Sanguina nivaloides and Sanguina aurantia (Chlorophyceae). In search for reasons for a cosmopolitan vs. a more restricted distribution of these microbes, significant differences in fatty acid and pigment profiles of field samples were found. S. aurantia accumulated much lower levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (21% vs. 48% of total fatty acids) and exhibited lower astaxanthin-to-chlorophyll-a ratio (2–8 vs. 12–18). These compounds play an important role in adaptation to extreme conditions at the snow surface and within snow drifts. Accordingly, the performance of photosystem II showed that one third to nearly half of the photosynthetic active irradiation was sufficient in S. aurantia, compared to S. nivaloides, to become light saturated. Furthermore, formation of plastoglobules observed in S. nivaloides but missing in S. aurantia may contribute to photoprotection. The rapid light curves of the two species show to a certain extent the shade-adapted photosynthesis under the light conditions at Svalbard (high α-value 0.16 vs. 0.11, low saturation point Ik 59 vs. 86). These results indicate significant physiological and ultrastructural differences of the two genetically closely related cryoflora species, but the reasons why S. aurantia has not been found at conditions outside (Sub-)Arctic climate types remain unknown.

Iron and phosphorus (P) are the important micro- and macro-nutrient for microalgae growth, respectively. However, the effect of iron and P on microalgae growth in co-culture associating with the formation of dominate algae has not been investigated before. In the current study, Anabaene flos-aquae, Chlorella vulgaris and Melosira sp. were co-cultivated under the addition of different initial iron and P to reveal the effect of iron and phosphorus on the growth of microalgae. The results showed that the mean growth rate of A. flos-aquae, C. vulgaris and Melosira was 0.270, 0.261 and 0.062, respectively, indicating that the A. flos-aquae and C. vulgaris algae are liable to be the dominant algae while the growth of Melosira was restrained when co-cultured. The ratio of Fe to P has a significant impact on the growth of microalgae and could be regarded as an indicator of algae growth. Microalgae showed a much more obvious uptake of iron compared to that of P. The information obtained in the current study was useful for the forecast of water quality and the control of microalgae bloom.

In 2016, a massive bloom of the chain-forming diatom Aulacoseira granulata occurred in the upper San Francisco Estuary, California, with chlorophyll concentrations up to 75 μg Chl L−1. In this study, quantitative PCR was used to investigate consumption of the bloom organism by the numerically dominant zooplankter Pseudodiaptomus forbesi (Copepoda: Calanoida) and to estimate the contribution of the bloom to egg production. Copepods were collected on four transects during May and June 2016; egg production rates were somewhat elevated above previous rates measured in the estuary. Ingestion of A. granulata was highest on the first sampling day, just after the peak of the bloom, ranging from 175 to 945 cells copepod−1 day−1. One month later ingestion rates dropped to 0–130 cells copepod−1 day−1, despite continued dominance of A. granulata in the plankton. Ingestion of A. granulata provided from 0 to 21% (median 1%) of the estimated daily carbon required for growth and reproduction of P. forbesi. Although the copepods probably obtained nutrition from a microbial food web stimulated by the bloom, monitoring data showed little demographic response to this bloom. Thus, a massive diatom bloom in an unproductive estuary provided only a minor stimulus through an abundant consumer to the pelagic food web.

Transparent exopolymer particles (TEPs) are ubiquitous throughout the oceans, and their sedimentation is considered an efficient biological carbon sink pathway. To investigate the role of coastal TEPs in sinking carbon from the upper layer, samples were collected in the spring and summer of 2011 in the Changjiang River (Yangtze River) Estuary, a typical coastal water. The concentrations and sinking rates of TEPs were measured, and potential sedimentation flux of TEPs was estimated. TEPs concentrations ranged from 40.00 µg/L to 1 040.00 µg/L (mean=(209.70±240.93) µg/L) in spring and 56.67 µg/L to 1 423.33 µg/L (mean=(433.33±393.02) µg/L) in summer, and they were higher at bloom stations than at non-bloom stations during both cruises. A significant positive correlation between TEPs concentration and chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration was detected, suggesting that phytoplankton was the primary source of TEPs in this area. TEPs sinking rates ranged from 0.08 m/d to 0.57 m/d with a mean of (0.28±0.14) m/d in spring and 0.10 m/d to 1.08 m/d with a mean of (0.34±0.31) m/d in summer. The potential sedimentation flux of TEP-C ranged from 4.95 mg/(m2·d) to 29.40 mg/(m2·d) with a mean of (14.66±8.83) mg/(m2·d) in spring and 6.80 mg/(m2·d) to 30.45 mg/(m2·d) with a mean of (15.71±8.73) mg/(m2·d) in summer, which was ∼17.81% to 138.27% (mean=65.15%±31.75%) of sedimentation flux of phytoplankton cells in the study area. Due to the increase of TEPs concentrations and their sinking rates, sedimentation fluxes of TEPs at the bloom station were obviously higher than at the non-bloom station during both cruises. This study indicates that TEPs serve as a carbon sink in the Changjiang River Estuary, especially during bloom events, and their sedimentation should be taken into account when we study the carbon sedimentation in the coastal sea.

We examined phytoplankton productivity in Shido Bay, an active oyster farming area in the eastern Seto Inland Sea, Japan, by an in situ 13C method from March 2016 to January 2017. The depth-integrated daily phytoplankton production ranged from 0.13 to 1.61 g C m−2 day−1, and the estimated annual production was 218 g C m−2 year−1. The daily production peaked in the rainy season and autumn, when phytoplankton blooms were observed, and production during the bloom events largely contributed to the annual production. There was a strong correlation between daily production and phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) throughout the study period. In the study area, due to the shallow depth (6 m) and moderate light attenuation coefficient of the water column (0.38 ± 0.07 m−1), the mean light intensity in the water column was maintained at high levels (36 ± 5% of incident photosynthetically active radiation) throughout the study period. In contrast, the dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration of the water was persistently low (

The interaction between bacteria and phytoplankton during bloom events are complicated throughout the developmental processes of algal blooms. The detailed ecological roles of bacterioplankton during algal blooms still need to be investigated comprehensively. With the assistance of omics techniques, the composition and function of bacterioplankton were studied during the blooming and recession periods of Phaeocystis globosa in the Beibu Gulf, China. The transcriptionally active taxa of Vibrio, which correlated with most functional genes, were enriched in the blooming period, whereas the active microbial groups, such as Erythrobacter and Candidatus puniceispirillum, increased significantly in the recession period of the P. globosa bloom. The transcriptional analyses indicated the blooming and recession periods of P. globosa had different impacts on the function of bacterioplankton, including shifts in expression of specific metabolic pathways for variable nutritional utilization and their advantage in bacterial motility, quorum sensing, and extracellular secretion. Overall, the integrated field investigation and in-depth analysis of molecular data highlighted the difference of bacterial community during the outbreak and collapse stages of P. globosa bloom, and provided fundamental data for better understanding of the bacterial community in response to blooming and recession of the P. globosa bloom.

In 2000, a total maximum daily load (TMDL) total phosphorus (TP) goal of 40 µg/L was established for Lake Okeechobee, Florida. The goal was selected to reduce the “imbalance to flora and fauna” caused by excessive phosphorus loading in the lake. We recalculate the TMDL TP goal using a water quality data series of TP and chlorophyll-a concentrations from 1986 to 2018 for the original 30 in-lake stations plus an additional 29 stations. Using the cross-tabulation approach used to generate the original TMDL TP goal, we determined a new goal of 42 µg/L, nominally different from the original. We also reevaluate the goal’s ability to maintain an implicit goal of 11.5% bloom frequency. We conclude substantial changes in the frequency and scope of the water quality sampling scheme prevent a determination on the effectiveness of the TMDL TP goal. The implementation, however, appears to have failed as the median TP concentration has increased by 93 µg/L to 133 µg/L and bloom frequency, after correcting for the declining sampling frequency, has increased from 1986 to 2018. An increased sampling frequency of TP and chlorophyll-a sampling is needed, or else tracking responses of chlorophyll-a to future TP reductions will be virtually impossible.

Black bloom is a worldwide environmental problem. Sediment microbes play important roles in the process of black bloom. The dynamic change of sedimental microbial community and their potential link between taste and odor compounds during black bloom was investigated in an in situ black bloom enclosure simulation experiment. Through high-throughput sequencing and analysis, pronounced shifts of sedimental microbial community were observed on the 3rd and 7th day in the black bloom group. Microbes in Cyanobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, Planctomycetes, and Actinobacteria were obviously increased, while microbes from the phyla OP8, Chloroflexi, and Acidobacteria were decreased significantly. RDA analysis revealed that the concentrations of chlorophyll a (Chla), total phosphorus (TP), and turbidity (NTU) in the water and the TP, TN concentrations in the sediment were the main environmental factors that affect the microbial community in the sediment. Correlation analysis revealed that microbes Dechloromonas sp. (OTU003567 and OTU000093), Desulfococcus sp. (OTU000911), Chromatiaceae (OTU001222), and Methanosaeta sp. (OTU004809) were positively correlated with the taste and odor substances in the sediment, such as dimethyl sulfide (DMS), β-ionone, β-cyclocitral and geosmin. The sedimental microbial community gradually recovered in the late phase of black bloom, indicating the stability and self-recovery ability of the sedimental microbial community during black bloom. Noteworthily, we observed many possible pathogens increased significantly during the black bloom, which alerts us to keep away from contaminated sediment when black bloom occurred.

The mucus produced by the outbreak of Phaeocystis globosa in the adjacent waters of the Fangchenggang Nuclear Power Plant (FCGNPP) in China has blocked the entrance of the cooling water filtration system of the FCGNPP, and posed a threat to the safe operation of the FCGNPP. At present, there is no related research on whether the changes in seawater viscosity could be used as a new method for monitoring and providing early warning of P. globosa tide. During a complete red tide cycle, the temporal and spatial changes in the hydrological conditions (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), composition and abundance of phytoplankton, number and size of P. globose colonies, concentration of transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) and the seawater viscosity were measured in this study. The results indicate that there was an extremely significant negative correlation between the physical seawater viscosity ηT,S and temperature, and the correlation coefficient reached −0.998. The biological seawater viscosity ηBio was positively correlated with the number of P. globosa colonies, and the correlation coefficients is 0.747. Because the increase in phytoplankton abundance, especially during the outbreak of P. globosa and a large amount of mucus produced by the colonies could significantly increase seawater viscosity, we suggest that biological factors were the main reasons for the increase in seawater viscosity. The ηBio was completely consistent with the occurrence process of P. globosa bloom and could be used as a valuable index for P. globosa bloom monitoring.

The stable isotopic composition (δ13C and δ15N) and carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N) of particulate organic matter (POM) in the Chukchi and East Siberian shelves from July to September, 2016 were measured to evaluate the spatial variability and origin of POM. The δ13CPOC values were in the range of −29.5‰to −17.5‰ with an average of −25.9‰±2.09‰, and the δ15NPN values ranged from 3.9‰ to 13.1‰ with an average of 8.0‰±1.6‰. The C/N ratios in the East Siberian shelf were generally higher than those in the Chukchi shelf, while the δ13C and δ15N values were just the opposite. Abnormally low C/N ratios ( 10‰) values were observed in the Wrangel Island polynya, which was attributed to the early bloom of small phytoplankton. The contributions of terrestrial POM, bloom-produced POM and non-bloom marine POM were estimated using a three end-member mixing model. The spatial distribution of terrestrial POM showed a high fraction in the East Siberian shelf and decreased eastward, indicating the influence of Russian rivers. The distribution of non-bloom marine POM showed a high fraction in the Chukchi shelf with the highest fraction occurring in the Bering Strait and decreased westward, suggesting the stimulation of biological production by the Pacific inflow in the Chukchi shelf. The fractions of bloom-produced POM were highest in the winter polynya and gradually decreased toward the periphery. A negative relationship between the bloom-produced POM and the sea ice meltwater inventory was observed, indicating that the net sea ice loss promotes early bloom in the polynya. Given the high fraction of bloom-produced POM, the early bloom of phytoplankton in the polynyas may play an important role on marine production and POM export in the Arctic shelves.

We study the equipment developed at the AO AKhK VNIIMETMASh and intended for the built-in electromagnetic stirring in the molds of bloom CCM performed with an aim to improve the quality of manufactured tubular billets.

Recent marine and freshwater algal and cyanobacterial blooms in Florida have increased public concern and awareness of the risks posed by exposure to these organisms. In 2018, Lake Okeechobee and the Caloosahatchee river, on the west coast of Florida, experienced an extended bloom of Microcystis spp. and a bloom of Karenia brevis in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico that coincided in the Fort Myers area. Samples from the Caloosahatchee at Fort Myers into Pine Island Sound and up to Boca Grande were collected by boat. High concentrations of microcystin-LR were detected in the cyanobacterial bloom along with brevetoxins in the marine samples. Furthermore, β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and isomers N-(2-aminoethyl)glycine (AEG) and 2,4-diaminobuytric acid (DAB) were detected in marine diatoms and dinoflagellates, and cyanobacteria of freshwater origin. High freshwater flows pushed the cyanobacterial bloom to barrier island beaches and Microcystis and microcystins could be detected into the marine environment at a salinity of 41 mS/cm. For comparison, in 2019 collections of Dapis (a new generic segregate from Lyngbya) mats from Sarasota showed high concentrations of BMAA, suggesting the possibility of long-term exposure of residents to BMAA. The findings highlight the potential for multiple, potentially toxic blooms to co-exist and the possible implications for human and animal health.

During a 2-year study of planktonic nitrogen (N) nutrition, temporal variability of (1) ambient nutrient concentrations; (2) uptake rates of ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3−), nitrite (NO2−), urea, and amino acids (AA) in three size fractions (> GF/F, > 5 μm, and 5–0.2 μm); (3) NH4+ regeneration and NO3− regeneration (nitrification); and (4) an unexpected bloom of Alexandrium monilatum were examined. Dissolved organic N (DON) was the most abundant form of fixed N. High concentrations of NH4+ and NO2− were detected during the late summer and fall, reaching maximums of 9.9 and 7.6 μmol N L−1, respectively. The highest uptake rates were for NH4+ at all stations, size fractions, and seasons sampled and ranged from 34 to 80% of total absolute N uptake. The magnitude of uptake rates in the > GF/F fraction generally followed the pattern of NH4+ > NO3− > urea > AA > NO2− with some exceptions when urea uptake rates were higher than NO3−. Rates of NH4+ regeneration and nitrification often exceeded uptake rates, indicating autochthonous pathways for nutrient loading. Exceptionally high dinoflagellate biomass was found in late summer and corresponded with harmful algal blooms. Kinetic curves measured during an A. monilatum bloom showed high Vmax (33.7 ± 2.7 × 10−3 h−1) and high Ks (7.3 μmol N L−1) for NH4+ suggesting that it can rapidly utilize high concentrations when available but may be outcompeted by other phytoplankton when concentrations of NH4+ are low. However, A. monilatum demonstrated that it is capable of using a diverse suite of N substrates, giving it a potential competitive advantage under diverse nutrient conditions.

The buoyancy of Microcystis colonies determines the occurrence and dominance of bloom on the water surface. Besides the cell density regulation and the formation of larger size aggregates, increases in cell volume per colony (Vcell) and the colony's compactness (i.e., volume ratio of cells to the colony, VR) may promote Microcystis colony buoyancy. Yet only a few studies have studied the relationship between the internal structure variation of colonies and their buoyancy, and the co-regulatory role of Vcell and VR of Microcystis colonies in the floating velocity (FV) remains largely unexplored. In the present study, we optimized a method for measuring the compactness of Microcystis colonies based on the linear relationship between total Vcell and chlorophyll a. Different relationships between the VRs and FVs were observed with different colony size and Vcell range groups. Both field and laboratory experiments showed that FV/(D50, median diameter)2 had a significant linear relationship with VR, indicating that the cell density and extracellular polysaccharides were unchanged over a short time period and could be estimated via the slope and intercept of a fitted line. We also constructed a functional relationship between FV, VR, and Vcell and found that high VR and Vcell can promote Microcystis buoyancy. This means that increasing cell compactness or Vcell may be an active regulation strategy for Microcystis colonies to promote buoyancy. Therefore, quantifying the internal structure of Microcystis colonies is strongly recommended for the assessment of Microcystis bloom development and their management. Graphical abstract.

The Sardine run associated with a bloom of the diatom genus Fragilariopsis was observed along the inshore coastal waters off Kanhangad during the last phase of the summer monsoon 2019. There was an unusual shoreward dumping of live oil sardines along with the waves throughout the day. High salinity (33 psu) and nutrient concentrations (Nitrate 16.33 μmol L−1 and silicate 13.9 μmol L−1) favoured the proliferation of Fragilariopsis spp. (7 × 104 cells L−1), in the coastal waters making them a major diet component of the oil sardines.

The green tide in the Yellow Sea is the world's largest macroalgal bloom. The maximum area affected by green tide can reach tens of thousands of square kilometers. Previous studies have shown that green tide drifts northward during the outbreak, yet the location of its northernmost drift and the characteristics of interannual variations have not been explored in detail. In this paper, we use the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) data, GaoFen-1 (GF-1) satellite data, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aerial data, and field trips for extraction and monitoring of green tide and then analyze the emergence, development, and dissipation of the green tide in Rongcheng coastal waters and the change of the northernmost drift position and its related factors from the year of 2013 to 2018. The results show that green tide have drifted to the Rongcheng coastal area over the years and the northernmost drift position can reach 37.662° N in 2014. Interannual difference of the northernmost position of the drift of the green tide is obvious, it is mainly affected by the wind, and there is no certain connection with the maximum coverage area, the coverage area when reaching the northernmost position, and the existence days of the green tide. These results can help to understand the drift range and dissipation process of green tide in the Yellow Sea.

To evaluate how the decay of bloom-forming algae affect the coastal dissolved oxygen, a laboratory simulation was conducted in terms of three typical harmful algae, Alexandrium catenella, Prorocentrum donghaiense, and Skeletonema costatum. Algae of same biomass (55 μg/mL) were conducted in lightproof columns, and the cell density, dissolved oxygen (DO), and ammonia nitrogen of different layers were monitored at certain time series. Results show that the decomposition of algae significantly decreased the DO, and increased the ammonia nitrogen in all layers; and significant deference between different species was observed. The A. catenella treatment showed the lowest DO (average concentration of 3.4 mg/L) and the highest ammonia nitrogen (average concentration of 0.98 mg/L) at the end of test, followed by P. donghaiense; and the S. costatum showed relatively high DO and low ammonia nitrogen due to slow decay rate. Results indicate that decomposition of harmful bloom algae, especially dinoflagellate, would cause significantly DO depletion and toxic ammonia nitrogen increase, which will detrimentally affect both pelagic and benthic ecosystem.

The blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Karenia selliformis can be predicted with accuracy derived from knowledge of the main forcing variables. A naive Bayes classifier modeling framework, a member of the Bayesian network family, is used to identify the phytoplankton community and the physical and meteorological parameters involving K. selliformis blooms in the eutrophic Boughrara Lagoon (BL), Tunisia. The proposed model takes into account the physical environment parameters (salinity, water temperature, tide amplitude), meteorological constraints (evaporation, air temperature, insolation, rainfall, atmospheric pressure, and humidity), phytoplankton groups (diatoms, dinoflagellates, cyanobacteria, Euglenophyceae), and the sampling months on K. selliformis blooms. The shift to highest salinity and atmospheric pressure, associated with reduced tide, are the most favorable conditions for K. selliformis blooms in BL. The results show that K. selliformis formed nearly monospecific blooms. A shift in species composition was pointed out between the bloom and non-bloom conditions. The Euglenophycea and some dinoflagellates like Peridinium minimum, Prorocentrum minimum, Prorocentrum micans, Prorocentrum gracile, Protoperidinium minutum, and Scrippsiella trochoidea appeared during blooms, whereas diatoms, diazotrophic cyanobacteria, and dinoflagellates (Akaskiwo sanguinea, Karlodinium veneficum, Gyrodinium spirale, Oxyrrhis marina, Polykrikos kofoidii) were observed under non-bloom conditions. This study highlighted the most favorable physical and meteorological conditions for K. selliformis bloom occurrences and also pointed out species indicators for bloom establishment and others for non-bloom conditions. Monitoring the dynamics of these species with the associated physical and meteorological variability offers valuable information to plan for the best options for prediction of potentially toxic blooms of K. selliformis and associated dystrophic consequences.

The Oyashio–Kuroshio Transitional Region (OKTR) is a nursery ground for pelagic fishes; thus, community succession of mesozooplankton is pivotal to understand prey availability, and it subsequently affects recruitment success. We investigated the surface distribution, biomass, and species composition of thaliaceans (salps and doliolids) that potentially have a significant impact on the food web and biogeochemical cycle by forming intensive blooms. A total of 11 thaliacean species were recorded from 62 locations along two transects at 36° N and 38.5° N extending from 142° E to 180° in May to June 1993. Salps and doliolids were found at 93% and 84% of the stations, respectively, and their biomass values varied widely in space (0.00011–79.56 and 0.00001–5.11 mg C m−3 for salps and doliolids, respectively). Thalia democratica was the most dominant salp and particularly abundant at stations east of 165°E on the 36°N-line; the abundance varied from 103 to 1379 ind m−3. Dolioletta gegenbauri and Doliolum denticulatum were dominant doliolids, although their biomass values were far lower than that of salps. Multivariate statistical analysis with PRIMER revealed that the distribution of thaliaceans in the OKTR was not uniform in space and was affected by oceanographic conditions; doliolids tended to occur in much warmer (14.10–15.63 °C) and saline water mass (34.54–34.72) than salps (13.16–14.95 °C and 34.40–34.53). In terms of population clearance rates, the most dense salp blooms have the potential to sweep > 200% of their resident water per day, indicating that salp blooms cause deleterious feeding conditions for pelagic fishes through non-selective filter feeding.

In February 2017, a Microcystis aeruginosa bloom (maximum 55 μg L−1 chl a and microcystin concentration of 40 μg L−1) occurred in a freshwater pond in Padre Island National Seashore (PINS), TX, USA, causing mortality of migratory redhead ducks and local animals. To treat the pond without further damage to the ecosystem, we proposed the use of H2O2. A nomograph of H2O2 required for oxidizing different initial cyanobacterial biomass levels to achieve desired final microcystin and chl a concentration was developed. With a chl a concentration > 50 μg L−1, the nomograph predicted > 97% removal efficiency when 50 mg L−1 peroxide was used. Then, an outdoor mesocosm experiment with four treatment levels (0, 10, 50 mg L−1 H2O2 and 10 mg L−1 H2O2 with ultrasonication) was tested. In the mesocosm experiment, discrete samples were assessed for cell morphology, pigment, and microcystin toxin content (n = 3) at six different time intervals during the 48-h treatment period. Cell morphology was affected after 4-h exposure at 50 mg L−1 H2O2 treatment. Overall, > 75% of microcystin and > 80% of chl a were destroyed after 48-h exposure to 50 mg L−1 H2O2. The pond was treated with 10 mg L−1 H2O2 which reduced chl a by 60% and microcystin by 35% after 2 days. Control of the cyanobacterial bloom using H2O2 was effective in lab and mesocosm experiments, but the cyanobacterial bloom recovered at PINS 2 weeks after the treatment. The recovery resulted from an insufficient H2O2 addition, identifying a need to re-evaluate current protocols. Overall, no residual H2O2 were detected in any scales of treatment.

14 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables.-- This is Smithsonian Marine Station contribution #1138, In 2011, the Indian River Lagoon, a biodiverse estuary in eastern Florida (USA), experienced an intense microalgal bloom with disastrous ecological consequences. The bloom included a mix of microalgae with unresolved taxonomy and lasted for 7 months with a maximum concentration of 130 μg chlorophyll a L. In 2012, brown tide Aureoumbra lagunensis also bloomed in portions of this estuary, with reoccurrences in 2016 and 2018. To identify and understand the role of grazer pressure (top-down control) on bloom formation, we coupled DNA sequencing with bivalve feeding assays using three microalgae isolated from the 2011 bloom and maintained in culture. Feeding experiments were conducted on widely distributed bivalve species in the lagoon, including eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica), hooked mussels (Ischadium recurvum), charru mussels (Mytella charruana), green mussels (Perna viridis), Atlantic rangia (Rangia cuneata), and hard clams (Mercenaria mercenaria), which were exposed to 3 × 10 cells mL of five species of microalgae consisting of A. lagunensis and the three species clarified herein, the picocyanobacteria Crocosphaera sp. and ‘Synechococcus’ sp., and the picochlorophyte Picochlorum sp., as well as Nannochloropsis oculata used as a control. To ensure clearance rates were indicative of consumption and assimilation, the microalgae were isotopically (N) labeled prior to feeding experiments. Clearance rates differed among bivalve and microalgal species, but enriched N values in bivalve tissue suggest that algal bloom species were assimilated by the bivalves.
