Inclusion of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in mainstream schools has a positive impact on their social and daily living behaviors. Our objective was to identify clinical and socio-demographic variables promoting or limiting inclusion in mainstream school through childhood and adolescence. The EpiTED study is a long-term, prospective, multicenter cohort of 281 ASD children included before the age of 7, with a 10-year follow-up in France. Variables significantly linked to inclusion in mainstream school were identified using a mixed-effect logistic regression model: greater autonomy [OR = 1.45 (1.29-1.63)], lesser symptom severity [OR = 0.96 (0.92-0.99)] and fewer siblings [OR = 0.86 (0.75-0.99)]. In the multivariate model, the probability for a child of being included in mainstream school decreased over time [OR = 0.91 (0.85-0.97)], i.e. with age.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that results from a complex interaction between genes and environment. Breastfeeding (BF) is thought to promote healthy cognitive development, and a body of research has suggested that it may also protect against ASD. Our objectives were to identify the relationship between the initiation and duration of BF and the severity of clinical presentation in ASD. Data were collected from 243 children with a confirmed diagnosis of ASD followed in the ELENA cohort. Clinical severity was measured according to multiple dimensions using standardised tools. The frequency of the initiation of BF was comparable to that of the general population and the rate of children still being breastfed at six months of age was higher. Our results did not indicate a contribution of initiation or duration of BF to the prevention of clinical severity of ASD. We discuss our results in the light of possible methodological limitations of previous reports of an association between BF and ASD.Clinical Trial Registration: NCT02625116.

Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is one of the most concerning conditions experienced by patients living with cancer and has a major impact on their quality of life. Available cognitive assessment tools are too time consuming for day-to-day clinical setting assessments. Importantly, although shorter, screening tools such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment or the Mini-Mental State Evaluation have demonstrated a ceiling effect in persons with cancer, and thus fail to detect subtle cognitive changes expected in patients with CRCI. This study addresses this lack of cognitive screening tools by developing a novel tool, the Fast Cognitive Evaluation (FaCE).A population of 245 patients with 11 types of cancer at different illness and treatment time-points was enrolled for the analysis. FaCE was developed using Rasch Measurement Theory, a model that establishes the conditions for a measurement tool to be considered a rating scale.FaCE shows excellent psychometric properties. The population size was large enough to test the set of items (item-reliability-index=0.96). Person-reliability (0.65) and person-separation (1.37) indexes indicate excellent internal consistency. FaCE’s scale is accurate (reliable) with high discriminant ability between cognitive levels. Within the average testing time of five minutes, FaCE assesses the main cognitive domains affected in CRCI.FaCE is a rapid, reliable, and sensitive tool for detecting even minimal cognitive changes over time. This can contribute to early and appropriate interventions for better quality of life in patients with CRCI. In addition, FaCE could be used as a measurement tool in research exploring cognitive disorders in cancer survivors.

Purpose To compare mothers and fathers perceptions of the impact of autism spectrum disorder on their Quality of Life (QoL), we used the Parental-Developmental Disorders-Quality of Life scale (Par-DD-QoL). Method The perception of QoL of mothers and fathers was compared for 130 pairs of parents of children with ASD and the associated variables were investigated. Results Mothers perceived a significantly greater impact of ASD on their QoL than fathers. Parents perceived a higher impact of ASD on global QoL when their child's adaptive skills were low and when the level of aberrant behaviors was high. More precisely, the perception of QoL by the mothers was negatively associated with their child's internalized disorders, whereas the perception of QoL by the fathers was negatively associated with their child's externalized disorders. Neither the mothers' nor the fathers' perception of the impact on QoL was associated with their children's age or the severity of their autistic symptoms. Some parental factors, such as being members of a family association, having benefited from training in ASD and having experienced a disruption in professional activity were associated with a greater impact on their QoL. Conclusion Our finding that the perceived impact of ASD on QoL differed between mothers and fathers argues for individualized psychosocial support. Moreover, the strong correlation between the child's clinical characteristics and the perception by parents of a higher impact of ASD on QoL should be seen as red flag concerning the needs of the parents in terms of social and educational support. Anxiety in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) negatively affects their social interactions, and quality of life. It is necessary to identify early risk factors for anxiety to tailor prevention and interventions. We aimed to examine the clinical level of anxiety in children with ASD from 5 to 10 years of age and identify potential early risk factors 3 years earlier. Participants were ASD children included in ELENA, a French prospective cohort. In this study, we used the collection of data at Time 1-T1 (at baseline) and Time 2-T2 (3 years after T1). Two groups were identified at T2 according to the threshold for anxiety on the CBCL: ASD-only group and ASD + anxiety group. Our results showed that half of the children in our sample had a clinical level of anxiety at T2. Regression analysis showed that greater ASD severity and lower sensory processing difficulties predicted lower anxiety, whereas higher levels of restricted and repetitive behaviours tended to predict higher levels of anxiety. The high prevalence of clinical-level anxiety in our sample suggests the need for specific assessment and targeted treatment of anxiety on a routine basis.

Atypical sensory processing (SP) is a diagnostic criterion of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, little is known about its course during development. In this exploratory longitudinal study, we aimed to investigate the course of SP among children with ASD and identify clinical variables associated with changes. We used a subsample of 51 children with confirmed ASD, aged from 3 to 10 years, recruited from the ELENA cohort. SP was assessed using the Sensory Profile questionnaire at baseline and three years later. Our preliminary results highlight the heterogeneity of the evolution of SP during the children’s development and the existence of three subgroups based on the course of SP (improvement, stable, and worsening). In addition, the children’s adaptive skills and maladaptive behaviors were related to the course of SP. These results could be confirmed in future studies with a larger sample size using a longitudinal approach to capture individual variability in SP. In addition, our results highlight the importance of accounting for temporal changes in the sensory needs of individuals with ASD in clinical practice.

International audience; There is a growing number of young people, diagnosed with an autism-spectrum disorder (ASD), transitioning to adulthood. Among this number, individuals without an intellectual disability have significant adaptive deficits and need individualized care and support services to better target vocational, social, and educational prospects and outcomes. Group-based interventions, including patient education, social-skills training, and cognitive-behavioral therapy, are widely used in clinical settings to improve the daily life and prospects of ASD individuals facing the challenge of transitioning to adulthood. We performed a systematic review of studies concerning the efficiency of group-based educational interventions with a focus on the transition to adulthood for young, ASD individuals without intellectual disability (ID). As a result of this systematic search, 21 studies out of 163 were found to be eligible for inclusion. We observed considerable heterogeneity across the studies, in terms of effect sizes and intervention design, delivery, and the comparison of controls. Strong evidence was found in favor of social-skills training and cognitive-behavioral therapy interventions. Professionals should consider group-based psychoeducational intervention to be an appropriate and relevant service for young subjects with ASD without ID transitioning to adulthood. Further research is needed on larger samples using multicentric designs to validate efficacy before generalization.

Among older adults who have recently sustained a fracture, there is substantial adoption of mobile technology. Furthermore, health and eHealth literacy level reported by participants supports the development of interactive eHealth interventions toward fostering better patient engagement in skeletal health management. Electronic health resources are increasingly used in the self-management of medical conditions. We aimed to identify the current level of technology adoption, health, and eHealth literacy among older adults with a recent fracture, to determine if the use of electronic interventions would be feasible and acceptable in this population. Adults ≥ 50 years with recent fractures were invited to complete a self-administered survey composed of 21 questions, including an 8-item perceived eHealth literacy scale. A total of 401 participants completed the survey (women, 64%; ≥ 65 years, 59%; university education, 32%). Most participants reported no difficulty in reading printed health material (67%) and felt confident in filling out medical forms (65%). Younger age and higher levels of education were associated with higher health literacy. Most respondents (81%) owned at least one mobile device (smartphone, 49%; tablet, 45%). eHEALS scores were similar among men (29, IQR 24–32) and women (29, IQR 25–33), and between younger age group categories (50–64 years, 30; IQR 26–33; and 65–74 years, 29; IQR 25–32), but lower in the oldest age group (≥ 75 years, 24; IQR 21–29; p

The impact of ASD on parental QOL was evaluated in the EpiTED cohort study at early adulthood. Two-third of parents of young adults with ASD (66.7%) reported that their QoL was at least moderately altered. The perceived impact of ASD on parental QoL was related to the young adults' level of adaptive skills, as well as to symptom severity and the presence of challenging behaviors, which appeared to be the main risk factor. The study of change between adolescence and early adulthood showed that parents whose children had a decrease in challenging behaviors perceived a decreased impact on their QoL. These results argue for the importance to propose specific interventions to target associated challenging behaviors in ASD.

Thermoplastic block copolymers of poly (α-methylstyrene-b-vinyl acetate), A new material was prepared by using of a natural algerian montmorillonite clay called maghnite-Na+ as catalyst, in order to respect the principles of a green chemistry. Thermoplastic polymers are generally inexpensive and well known to the general public: poly (α-methylstyrene), poly (vinyl acetate), they represent the majority of plastics we use. The plastics industry remains to this day a sector of activity in full economic growth. The thermoplastic block copolymer of α-methylstyrene (α-MS) and vinyl acetate (VAc) is improved by the addition of small amounts of vinyl acetate to poly α-methystyrene according to cationic copolymerization reaction. This reaction is carried under suitable conditions, out in bulk at 0 °C for 48 h. The block copolymer (α-MethylStyrene-b-Vinyl Acetate) has been successfully prepared and characterized by various techniques including nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR), fourier transform IR spectrometers (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) were used to elucidate structural characteristics and thermal properties of the resulting copolymer. The effects of the amount of maghnite-Na+ and α-MS on yield of copolymers were studied. The copolymerization yield increased as the proportions of catalyst and α-MS were increased. Finally, a mechanism for the reaction was proposed.

We examined the occurrence and timing of separation of parents raising children with Autism Spectrum Disorders followed over a 10-year period (n = 119). We also compared the clinical characteristics of children and sociodemographic variables between parents who remained as a couple versus parents who separated. The results showed that after 10 years of follow-up 74.8 % of the couples remained together (n = 89), representing a separation rate of 25.2 %. This rate remained stable over the study period. There was no significant difference in any of the clinical and sociodemographic variables between comparison groups. Our results suggest that raising a child with autism does not often lead to the dissolution of the parents’ relationship, as is commonly believed. The occurrence of parental separation in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders does not appear to vary according to their stage of life (childhood or adolescence). Lastly, the clinical profile of children and sociodemographic variables do not seem to influence the relationship status of parents.

This study examines change in 152 children over an almost 10-year period (T1: 4.9 (± 1.3) years; T2: 8.1 (± 1.3) years; T3: 15(± 1.6) years) using a group-based, semi-parametric method in order to identify distinct developmental trajectories. Important deficits remain at adolescence in the adaptive abilities of children with Autism spectrum disorders, but changes in adaptive skills show two distinct growth rates. The univariate analysis reveals that low growth trajectories for both social and communication outcome are associated with the following characteristics at age 5: low cognitive and language skills, presence of epilepsy, and severity of autism. The multivariate analysis confirms that risk factors at age 5, were low language and severity of autism for both social and communication outcomes 10 years later, and that hours of early intervention was protective factor for communication.

The net photosynthesis of the Mediterranean brown seaweedCystoseira barbata f.repens is measured according to irradiance, temperature and salinity. There is not only, a good utilization of low light intensities (light-shade adaptation), but also a specific ability to use a broad range of irradiance, which corresponds in the photosynthesis-irradiance curves to a high initial slope and an extended light saturation level from 300 to 1500 μmol photon m−2 s−1; only very high irradiances induce photoinhibition. Maximum net photosynthesis occurred at temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 30 °C. The alga tolerates not only a low level of salinity, but also a slight increase in salinity; however, at more than 47.5 g 1−1 NaCl, oxygen exchange is significantly reduced.
