Extending the dialogue on corporate social performance (CSP) as descriptive stakeholder management (Clarkson, Acad Manage Rev 20:92, 1995), we examine differences in CSP activity between family and nonfamily firms. We argue that CSP activity can be explained by the firm’s identity orientation toward stakeholders (Brickson, Admin Sci Quart 50:576, 2005; Acad Manage Rev 32:864, 2007). Specifically, individualistic, relational, or collectivistic identity orientations can describe a firm’s level of CSP activity toward certain stakeholders. Family firms, we suggest, adopt a more relational orientation toward their stakeholders than nonfamily firms, and thus engage in higher levels of CSP. Further, we invoke collectivistic identity orientation to argue that the higher the level of family or founder involvement within a family firm, the greater the level of CSP toward specific stakeholders. Using social performance rating data from 1991 to 2005, we find that family and nonfamily firms demonstrate notable differences in terms of social initiatives and social concerns. We also find that the level of family and founder involvement is related to the type and frequency of a family firm’s social initiatives and social concerns.

This contribution presents our recent progress on developing an efficient fully-nonlinear potential flow model for simulating 3D wave-wave and wave-structure interaction over arbitrary depths (i.e. in coastal and offshore environment). The model is based on a high-order finite difference scheme OceanWave3D presented in [1, 2]. A nonlinear decomposition of the solution into incident and scattered fields is used to increase the efficiency of the wave-structure interaction problem resolution. Application of the method to the diffraction of nonlinear waves around a fixed, bottom mounted circular cylinder are presented and compared to the fully nonlinear potential code XWAVE as well as to experiments.

In a controlled laboratory experiment, we found evidence for our predictions that participants who received fair distributive treatment were more likely to lie to give a supervisor a good performance evaluation than those treated unfairly, and those who received unfair distributive treatment were more likely to steal money from a supervisor than those treated fairly. We further proposed that the presence of an ethical code of conduct would moderate these relationships such that when the code was present these relationships would be weaker than when the code was absent, but we failed to find support for these moderating effects. Our findings suggest that the relationship between distributive justice and unethical behavior is likely more complex than previously considered. Both researchers and managers may benefit from a broader understanding of the factors that motivate and inhibit unethical behaviors intended to benefit and harm supervisors and/or organizations.

A discontinuous Galerkin finite-element method (DG-FEM) solution to a set of high-order Boussinesq-type equations for modelling highly nonlinear and dispersive water waves in one horizontal dimension is presented. The continuous equations are discretized using nodal polynomial basis functions of arbitrary order in space on each element of an unstructured computational domain. A fourth-order explicit Runge-Kutta scheme is used to advance the solution in time. Methods for introducing artificial damping to control mild nonlinear instabilities are also discussed. The accuracy and convergence of the model with both h (grid size) and p (order) refinement are confirmed for the linearized equations, and calculations are provided for two nonlinear test cases in one horizontal dimension: harmonic generation over a submerged bar, and reflection of a steep solitary wave from a vertical wall. Test cases for two horizontal dimensions will be considered in future work.

Our purpose was to assess the value of routine administration of intravenous gadolinium-DTPA (Gd-DTPA) for cranial MR in a series of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients. Two radiologists retrospectively reviewed 150 consecutive examinations of 104 patients. All patients underwent unenhanced and contrast-enhanced images. Each radiologist independently assessed first the unenhanced images alone and then the pre- and postinjection images together. Then both reviewed the complete study and produced a consensus report. The history, investigations and management were collated separately and were unknown to the radiologists. Contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images showed new focal abnormalities, not seen on the T2-weighted or unenhanced images in 15 (14 %) patients, but almost always in the context of abnormal unenhanced images. In only 2 patients (2 %) did contrast medium reveal abnormalities when the unenhanced study had been considered normal. In only 1 of these (1 %) was the new finding, cytomegalovirus diffuse ependymal enhancement, of clinical importance, although the diagnosis of encephalitis was made on routine examination of cerebrospinal-fluid. The other revealed a toxoplasma lesion in a patient known to have resolving disease. Meningeal disease not suspected on the unenhanced images was shown in 2 patients (2 %). In these case the unenhanced images were abnormal in other respects. Intravenous Gd-DTPA was helpful to the radiologist in making a radiological diagnosis in 11 patients (11 %), usually by improving characterisation of a lesion seen on the unenhanced images. The contribution of intravenous Gd-DTPA in this series does not warrant recommending its use in every case.

Magnetic resonance imaging has been reported to have advantages over conventional angiography in the diagnosis of dural sinus thrombosis. A case report is presented describing the application of MR techniques including MR angiography, to diagnose and monitor therapy for dural sinus thrombosis.
