Prior research examining alcohol use using national data has often overlooked vital heterogeneity among Hispanics, especially that related to language dominance and gender. We examine the prevalence of alcohol abstinence and—given prior research suggesting that many Spanish dominant Hispanics do not drink—examine rates of binge drinking among past-year alcohol users with a focus on the intersections of language and gender among Hispanics, while drawing comparisons with non-Hispanic (NH) White and NH Black adults. Drawing from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health—a nationally representative survey between 2002 and 2018—we examine the year-by-year prevalence of alcohol abstinence and binge drinking among adults ages 18 and older in the United States. A disproportionate number of Spanish-dominant Hispanics abstain from alcohol use (54%), with particularly high levels of alcohol abstinence observed among Spanish dominant women (men: 39%, women: 67%). The prevalence of alcohol abstinence among English-dominant Hispanic men (24%) and women (32%) is far lower, approximating that of NH Whites (men: 23%, women: 32%). Importantly, however, among Spanish-dominant drinkers, the prevalence of binge drinking (men: 52%, women: 33%) is comparable to or greater than NH Whites (men: 42%, women: 32%). Binge drinking levels among English-dominant Hispanic men (50%) and women (37%) are greater than among their NH White counterparts. Findings paint a complex picture; consistent with prior research, we see that many Hispanics abstain from alcohol, but we also see new evidence underscoring that—among Hispanic drinkers—the prevalence of binge drinking is disconcertingly elevated.

The purpose of this study is to advance our understanding of family-based adversities and adolescent well-being by examining variability in substance use profiles among urban, low-income and predominantly African American adolescents (n = 2858). Latent class analysis and regressions were used to identify the nature and correlates of heterogeneity in substance use patterns among adolescents in the Mobile Youth Survey (MYS). Analyses revealed the presence of four underlying subgroups of youth: non-users (48.4%), alcohol users (17.6%), alcohol and marijuana users (31.6%), and polysubstance users (2.5%). Membership in classes varied by age and gender, with older youth and males being more likely to belong to groups characterized by the use of multiple substances. Youth who reported that someone in their household had been arrested were more likely to belong to one of the substance using groups than the non-use group, and youth who reported not having a father figure were more likely to belong to groups characterized by the use of multiple substances relative to the non-use group. Youth who reported living with two biological parents were less likely to belong to either the alcohol or the alcohol and marijuana classes than the non-use group. Results further indicated that youth in classes characterized by the use of multiple substances were more likely to exhibit externalizing problems and internalizing distress than other youth. Findings underscore the importance of identifying heterogeneity even in seemingly homogeneous samples and suggest a number of new directions for future research.

Questions remain regarding optimal timeframes for asking about adherence in clinical care. We compared 4-, 7-, 14-, 30-, and 60-day timeframe missed dose items with viral load levels among 1099 patients on antiretroviral therapy in routine care. We conducted logistic and linear regression analyses examining associations between different timeframes and viral load using Bayesian model averaging (BMA). We conducted sensitivity analyses with subgroups at increased risk for suboptimal adherence (e.g. patients with depression, substance use). The 14-day timeframe had the largest mean difference in adherence levels among those with detectable and undetectable viral loads. BMA estimates suggested the 14-day timeframe was strongest overall and for most subgroups although findings differed somewhat for hazardous alcohol users and those with current depression. Adherence measured by all missed dose timeframes correlated with viral load. Adherence calculated from intermediate timeframes (e.g. 14-day) appeared best able to capture adherence behavior as measured by viral load.

The present work examined the influence of drinking motives on hookah use frequency among individuals reporting both alcohol and hookah use (multi-substance users). Despite growing documentation of cross-substance effects between motives and substance use, limited research has examined these relationships specifically with respect to hookah use. Participants were 134 (75.37 % female) hookah and alcohol users, aged 18–47 years (M = 22.17, SD = 3.66) who completed measures of substance use, drinking motives, and reported demographic information. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to investigate the predictive value of drinking motives on hookah use frequency, age taken into account. Findings showed that hookah use was negatively associated with age (β = − .22, p ≤ . 01). Background Alcohol consumption among pregnant women is a public health concern, considering its adverse outcomes for both mother and the developing foetus. This study examined factors that facilitate prenatal alcohol consumption, knowledge of adverse outcomes of prenatal alcohol exposure and alcohol expenditure among pregnant women in an urban community in Ghana. Methods In June 2014, a survey was conducted among 250 pregnant women sampled from James Town, an urban community in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews and descriptive statistics conducted. The prevalence of alcohol consumption among women was determined. Pearson chi-square was used to determine associations between variables where necessary. Results Fifty-four percent of the pregnant women were aged 20 – 29 years. Seventy-three percent reported that they have ever consumed an alcoholic beverage before pregnancy. Of these, 77% take alcohol “once a while” and 48% reported taking alcohol during pregnancy. Most of the pregnant women (53%) who currently consume alcoholic beverages had it from friends, and their main reason for prenatal alcohol consumption was socialization (39%). Majority of both current alcohol drinkers (78%) and non-current alcohol drinkers (74%) were aware that prenatal alcohol consumption can lead to spontaneous abortion. Additionally, current alcohol drinkers spend averagely GHS 4.54 (SD 4.63) on their favourite alcoholic drink and overall, also spend averagely GHS 4.63 (SD 4.82) on their entire alcoholic beverage weekly. Over two-thirds (63%) of women reported monthly average income of less than GHS200. Conclusion This study shows high prenatal alcohol consumption in James Town, Accra, despite pregnant women’s knowledge of its adverse effects on the developing foetus. Alcohol is usually sourced from friends with socialization noted as a major reason for prenatal alcohol consumption. These results could be used to inform future health advocacies and policies on prenatal alcohol exposure and maternal and child health interventions in the country.

Methods Substance-using probationers (N =194) completed baseline and 2-month follow-up interviews. Probationers averaged 35 years-old and were predominately male (69%) and nonwhite (79%). Measures included demographics (e.g., age), treatment/use experience (e.g., ASI drug score), psychosocial functioning (e.g., self-esteem), and criminal justice experience (e.g., lifetime arrests). Hard drug use included opiates, cocaine, barbiturates, amphetamines, hallucinogens, and inhalants. Multinomial regression models examined the relationship between these factors and different category of continued substance use: no use (reference category); hard drug user; marijuana or significant alcohol users only.

Conclusions Differences in the pattern of alcohol use and related problems exist among various ethnicities Slavs and Arabs in Belarus. The Slavs had higher percentages of alcohol users, but relatively lower proportion of problem drinkers, compared to the results of the Arabs. Higher AUDIT scores were recorded for the Arabs. No significant differences were noted in the preference for alcoholic beverages among all ethnicities. Published: 22 April 2010

The alcoholic’s drinking behavior is commonly accounted for by a tension reduction hypothesis (TRH). However, comparison of the phenomenological states experienced by “addicted” and nonaddicted” alcohol users suggests the existence of a strongly elevated alcohol-induced euphoria in addicted alcoholics which may contribute to the genesis and support of the characteristic alcoholic syndrome.
