Abstract

EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder for JEM-EUSO, the mission concept of a spaceborne observatory which is designed to observe Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR)-induced Extensive Air Showers (EAS) by detecting their UltraViolet (UV) light tracks “from above.” On August 25, 2014, EUSO-Balloon was launched from Timmins Stratospheric Balloon Base (Ontario, Canada) by the balloon division of the French Space Agency CNES. After reaching a floating altitude of 38 km, EUSO-Balloon imaged the UV light in the wavelength range ∼290–500 nm for more than 5 hours using the key technologies of JEM-EUSO. The flight allowed a good understanding of the performance of the detector to be developed, giving insights into possible improvements to be applied to future missions. A detailed measurement of the photoelectron counts in different atmospheric and ground conditions was achieved. By means of the simulation of the instrument response and by assuming atmospheric models, the absolute intensity of diffuse light was estimated. The instrument detected hundreds of laser tracks with similar characteristics to EASs shot by a helicopter flying underneath. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. The reconstruction of the direction of the laser tracks was performed. In this work, a review of the main results obtained by EUSO-Balloon is presented as well as implications for future space-based observations of UHECRs.

Abstract

Atmospheric aerosols play an important role in Earth’s radiative balance, directly interacting with solar radiation or influencing cloud formation and properties. In order to assess their radiative impact, it is necessary to accurately characterise their optical properties, together with their spatial and vertical distribution. The information on aerosol vertical profile is often scarce, in particular in mountainous, complex terrains. This study presents the first attempt to evaluate the shortwave aerosol direct radiative effect in the Aosta Valley, a mountainous region in the Northwestern Italian Alps. Ground-based, remote sensing instruments (a sky radiometer and an Automated Lidar Ceilometer) are used to derive two descriptions of the aerosol properties and vertical distribution: a first, more accurate description, which includes the whole spectral information about the aerosol extinction coefficient, phase function and single scattering albedo; a second, more approximate one, which only relies on spectrally constant values of aerosol single scattering albedo and asymmetry factor. This information is used as input for radiative transfer simulations, which allow to estimate, in cloudless conditions, the shortwave aerosol direct radiative effect and the vertical profile of the instantaneous heating rates in the lower layers of the atmosphere. The simulations obtained with the two descriptions do not differ significantly: they highlight a strong surface dimming (between − 25 and − 50 W m− 2) due to the presence of aerosol, with a considerable radiative absorption inside the atmospheric column (around + 30 W m− 2), and an overall small cooling effect for the Earth-atmospheric system. The absorption of solar radiation within the atmospheric column due to aerosol leads to instantaneous heating rates up to 1.5 K day− 1 in the tropospheric layers below 6 km a.s.l. These results show that, in some conditions, the shortwave aerosol direct radiative effect can be considerable even in this Alpine environment, usually considered as relatively pristine (yearly average PM10 concentration about 20 μg m− 3).

Abstract

The land surface processes play an important role in weather and climate systems through its regulation of radiation, heat, water and momentum fluxes. Soil temperature (ST) is one of the most important parameters in the land surface processes; however, there are few extensive measurements of ST with a long time series in the world. According to the CLImatology of Parameters at the Surface (CLIPS) methodology, the output of a trusted Soil-Vegetation- Atmosphere Transfer (SVAT) scheme can be utilized instead of observations to investigate the regional climate of interest. In this study, ST in South Korea is estimated in a view of future climate using the output from a trusted SVAT scheme — the University of TOrino model of land Process Interaction with Atmosphere (UTOPIA), which is driven by a regional climate model. Here characteristic changes in ST are analyzed under the IPCC A2 future climate for 2046-2055 and 2091-2100, and are compared with those under the reference climate for 1996-2005. The UTOPIA results were validated using the observed ST in the reference climate, and the model proved to produce reasonable ST in South Korea. The UTOPIA simulations indicate that ST increases due to environmental change, especially in air temperature (AT), in the future climate. The increment of ST is proportional to that of AT except for winter. In wintertime, the ST variations are different from region to region mainly due to variations in snow cover, which keeps ST from significant changes by the climate change.

Abstract

Designed as the first mission to explore the ultra-high energy universe from space, JEM-EUSO observes the Earth’s atmosphere at night to record the ultraviolet tracks generated by the extensive air showers. We present the expected geometrical aperture and annual exposure in the nadir and tilt modes for ultra-high energy cosmic rays observation as a function of the altitude of the International Space Station. Abstract

Ultra high energy photons and neutrinos are carriers of very important astrophysical information. They may be produced at the sites of cosmic ray acceleration or during the propagation of the cosmic rays in the intergalactic medium. In contrast to charged cosmic rays, photon and neutrino arrival directions point to the production site because they are not deflected by the magnetic fields of the Galaxy or the intergalactic medium. In this work we study the characteristics of the longitudinal development of showers initiated by photons and neutrinos at the highest energies. These studies are relevant for development of techniques for neutrino and photon identification by the JEM-EUSO telescope. In particular, we study the possibility of observing the multi-peak structure of very deep horizontal neutrino showers with JEM-EUSO. We also discuss the possibility to determine the flavor content of the incident neutrino flux by taking advantage of the different characteristics of the longitudinal profiles generated by different type of neutrinos. This is of grate importance for the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos at the highest energies. Regarding photons, we discuss the detectability of the cosmogenic component by JEM-EUSO and also estimate the expected upper limits on the photon fraction which can be obtained from the future JEM-EUSO data for the case in which there are no photons in the samples.

Abstract

Nipple-areola complex numbness is common following breast reduction with most techniques. The aim of our study was to objectively quantify specific sensory outcomes before and after inferior pedicle breast reduction with two combined neurophysiological methods: dermatomal somatosensory evoked potentials (D-SEPs) and laser-evocated potentials (LEPs). Patients’ subjective breast sensation was assessed preoperatively and postoperatively by accurate clinical examinations. Thirty patients underwent quantitative measurements preoperatively and at 3 and 6 months following inferior pedicle breast reduction to assess tactile and vibratory sensitivity (D-SEP recordings) and painful and thermic sensitivity (LEP recordings). The collected data did not reveal significant differences in D-SEP latencies or amplitudes between preoperative and postoperative evaluations following inferior pedicle breast reduction. However, LEP data showed significant alterations in latency and amplitude in accordance with clinical examinations. This study provides the basis for a new approach to selectively investigate painful and thermic sensitivity, which is necessary to find the best technique to preserve breast sensitivity. This study also provides the first objective neurophysiologic evidence of breast sensitivity modifications and introduces a new technique that provides a simple, inexpensive, and dependable investigative tool for breast sensitivity assessment in breast surgery. Abstract

Landfall tropical cyclones are a major kind of severe weather affecting China. The typhoon Sepat, declassified as tropical storm after its landfalling, caused a continuous heavy rainfall event over China mainland from 19th to 25th August, 2007. The storm cyclone resided over the Hunan province for 60 hours, causing observed accumulated precipitation larger than 300 mm in a large area of the Hunan province and leading severe flood events. This event was simulated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with the surface layer scheme UTOPIA. The model was able to reproduce the main characteristics of the event, including the typhoon track and the rainfall field and timing. In addition, three sets of sensitivity experiments have been performed. In the first one, the effects of different land surface schemes (RUC, NOAH and UTOPIA) coupled with WRF on the precipitation, sensible and latent heat flux fields associated with the Typhoon Sepat (2007) were investigated. The second set of sensitivity experiments analyzed the role of the surface fluxes (sensible and latent heat flux) on the typhoon evolution. The third set of sensitivity experiments regarded the initialization of the soil moisture content. These experiments showed that both latent and sensible heat fluxes sustained this landfalling typhoon, maintaining the spiral structure of rain belt. Among the two fluxes, the latent heat one played a major role in determining the intensity, the track and the rainfall distribution of the typhoon. In addition, the correct initialization of the soil moisture content has reveled a fundamental parameter to be initialized in order to correctly evaluate the distribution and intensity of the rain field. The intercomparison between the three different land surface schemes coupled with WRF showed that the WRF-UTOPIA and WRF-NOAH outputs seem comparable between each other and physically most realistic than those of WRF-RUC. These analyses were helpful to understand the evolution and the development of the landfalling typhoon, and demonstrated that WRF-UTOPIA and WRF-NOAH could be considered a good tool for managing the risk evaluation connected with the occurrence of such events at regional scale.

The aim of this work is an improvement of the parameterization of the soil moisture in the scheme of the Land Surface Process Model (LSPM) for applications over desert areas. In fact, in very dry conditions, the water vapour flux plays an important role in the evaporation processes and influences the underground profiles of humidity and temperature. The improved version of soil moisture parameterization in the LSPM scheme has been checked by using the data taken from the database of the field experiment HAPEX-Sahel (Hydrology-Atmosphere Pilot Experiment in the Sahel. 1990-1992). Model simulations refer to three different stations located in Niger (Fallow, Millet and Tiger sites) where input data for LSPM and observations were simultaneously available. The results of simulations, taking into account the water vapour flux in the soil model LSPM, seem to compare better with the observed behaviour of soil moisture and turbulent heat fluxes than those overlooking the water vapour flux, confirming the great importance of the water vapour in such dry conditions.

Abstract

The attention paid to changes in atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases has recently increased, with particular regard to the relationships between variations of their annual trends and of their shorter-period fluctuations on the one hand, and some geophysical and biological natural processes (like atmospheric transport, volcanic eruptions, ENSO events, seasonal vegetation cycles, and so on) on the other hand. Careful analysis and interpretation of the above relationships, in fact, can often disclose unknown mechanisms acting on modulations of these gases and make it possible for us to better understand the contributions made to them by natural causes, contrasted with anthropogenic ones. This paper presents and discusses the results of a series of CO2 air concentration data, measured at Plateau Rosa (3480 m a.s.l.—Italian Western Alps) over a period of about four years, and correlated with atmospheric transport processes on synoptic scale. These results have shown the leading role played by some kinds of atmospheric circulation patterns in creating situations of not fully mixed air streams (and, as such, not representative of background conditions) and have also suggested a «meteorological» selection scheme for CO2 data to be used in evaluating more reliable annual trends.

Abstract

In the past ten years, use of sonic anemometers to provide fast-response wind sensing in the atmospheric surface layer became more and more intensive, due to their increasing availability, decreasing cost and increasing number of publications regarding their data treatment. In this paper, we present an algorithm we have developed in order to analyse the data of one of the most diffused types of sonic anemometer,i.e. the Gill sonic anemometer. Our software allows to evaluate the air temperature and the sensible- and latent-heat fluxes if also low-response measurements of air humidity at the same level of sonic anemometer, and of net radiation and ground surface flux are available. We let our software the option of evaluating the fluxes along the mean local streamline (thus the turbulent fluxes are associated with transport across mean streamline surfaces). By using the data gathered in two field experiments, we discuss the applications of the proposed formulations and check the accuracy of our method by comparing the evaluated fluxes with those measured by fluxmeter.

A renewed interest in the dynamic and thermal structure of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) has recently revived, due to the contribution that this layer can provide to the improvement of skill of weather prediction and climate simulation in the most advanced general circulation models. The attention is particularly focused on non-stationary and non-homogeneous turbulent structures of this transition layer, for which many parametrization schemes, based on local-and non-local-closure assumptions, have been proposed. However, also stationary, non-homogeneous, continous-turbulence conditions can give rise to some complication in the ABL parametrization when air stability becomes stronger and stronger. In this situation, the governing scales of the classical non-local Monin-Obukhov similarity theory are no more representative, and new local scales must be derived from local forcings of the flux. This paper summarizes a few relevant points of the local-similarity theory and shows the results of a local-scaling analysis obtained by observation data of wind and temperature profiles in the ABL in the northern Po Valley

Abstract

As a part of our activity in the transboundary transport, this study examines a five years’ trajectory climatology interesting Northern Italy. Our analysis is twofold: firstly we examine the statistics of air masses arriving at an Alpine location (Brenner Pass) separating between rainy only trajectories and all trajectories, and, secondly, we study the climatology of trajectories, going out from the Po Valley. Trajectories are computed by means of a simple three-dimensional trajectory method using the wind data obtained by the analysis of the ECMWF. The distribution of the arrival (or departure) directions of the trajectories is presented and commented. The differences in the travel times for the different directions are presented as well. The vertical distribution of the trajectories is finally computed. The main results are discussed.

Abstract

It is aim of this work to acquire information useful to understand the trasborder transport of atmospheric trace elements passing through the Alps. To this end it is necessary to know with a good accuracy the atmospheric movements and their thermodynamic structure at the synoptic scale. With these objects in view, from the one hand a measuring campaign on the Western Alps (Sestrieres Pass) has been performed, during which the concentration of some gaseous constituents of the atmosphere (O3, NO x , SO2) and thermodynamic structure of the air masses which carried them have been measured; on the other hand, synoptic air trajectoris (based on the Reading ECMWF data) passing through that measuring station have been computed. Such calculations have been carried out by two algorithms: the first one computes the 3D air mass trajectory on the ground of the three wind velocity components only (which are known on the Reading model grid points). The second one behaves as the first one as far as the horizontal movement is concerned, but compels the atmosphere to move along surfaces of equal pseudopotential temperature (isentropic surface) in the vertical plane.
