The nitrofuran compounds exhibit a wide spectrum of biological action, and the understanding of their reduction mechanism can contribute to a better comprehension of their biological action. In this sense, the electrochemical reduction of nitrofurans has been studied through square wave voltammetry (SWV) in aqueous media, having a carbon fiber microelectrode as working electrode. One single cathodic peak in acidic media is registered for all studied drugs (nitrofurazone, nitrofurantoin, and furazolidone), being the hidroxylamine derivative formation linearly dependent on pH. In alkaline media, the peaks reduction is not pH-dependent, but a split of the original into two distinct peaks is observed. The evaluation of the results obtained in unprecedented form by SWV for different alkaline pH media, suggests that the charge transfer process for the R-NO2 •− formation is followed by irreversible chemical reaction, which chacraterizes an EC mechanism.

International audience; This review presents some of the recent advancements in our understanding of comets facilitated by laboratory studies, need for new laboratory simulations, and predictions for future explorations. With the spacecraft Rosetta at the comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, a large volume of science data is expected to follow early results that have been published recently. The most surprising of them being hard ice shell that bounced thelander Philae a couple of times before settling on the comet. Long evaded molecular nitrogen has now been detected in the comet 67P/CG. The observed density of 470 kgm−3 is in line with other comet observations, whereas the nature and composition of hydrocarbons detected on the surface are still a puzzle. Observation of D/H ratio that deviates significantly from Earth’s water D/H ratio brings back to the table the long-standing question whether or not water on Earth was delivered by comet impacts. Our review summarizes some of the critical laboratory work that helps improve our understanding of cometary interior (whether amorphous or crystalline or containing clathrates), cometary surface (rich of complex organics), cometary coma and tail (D/H ratio, negative ions, and photoluminescence). Outstanding questions are also discussed.

Malassezia pachydermatis is a yeast that is frequently involved as a secondary/perpetuating factor in canine otitis externa. Topical therapies with different antifungal agents, mainly azole compounds, are generally successful in controlling the yeast overgrowth, but treatment failure and rapid recurrences are common. This study compared the in vitro antifungal susceptibility of M. pachydermatis isolates obtained from chronic and acute cases of otitis externa. The aim was to assess the possible onset of resistance mechanisms in isolates involved in long-lasting episodes with poor response to treatment. We evaluated the in vitro susceptibility to miconazole (MCZ) and clotrimazole (CTZ) of 42 isolates of M. pachydermatis obtained from dogs with chronic (group A, n = 25) and acute otitis (group B, n = 17), using a modified CLSI M27-A3 microdilution method. All isolates were inhibited by the antifungal agents employed, but Malassezia isolates from group A were significantly associated with higher minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for both agents (Median MIC values: MCZ group A 2 µg/ml, group B 1 µg/ml; CTZ group A 8 µg/ml, group B 4 µg/ml). These findings prove that these isolates had a reduced in vitro susceptibility to the antifungal agents tested. However, it is unlikely that this could have any influence on the outcome of a topical treatment. Indeed, marketed products include concentrations of the tested agents that largely exceed even the highest MICs found in this study (in most cases at least 1,000 × the MIC, or greater). In conclusion, this study suggests that isolates of M. pachydermatis involved in chronic cases of canine external otitis and exposed to repeated antifungal treatments are unlikely to develop mechanisms of resistance of clinical relevance.

The Forbush decrease following the large X2 solar flare on mid-February 2011 has been observed by the muon telescopes of the EEE Project, which are located in several Italian sites and at CERN. Data from two different telescopes of the EEE network have been analyzed and compared to those measured by neutron monitor stations. The variation of the muon counting rate during the Forbush decrease was also extracted for different intervals of the azimuthal angle of the incoming muons.

The hydrogenation of CO2 was investigated on Ga2O3-promoted Pd/SiO2 catalyts and mechanical mixtures of Ga2O3/SiO2 and Pd/SiO2 catalysts (H2/CO2 = 3; P = 3.0 MPa; T = 523 K). By means of the latter it was possible to demonstrate that atomic hydrogen, H s , can be generated by Pd0 far from Ga2O3, and move (spill-over) there to reach the other reactive species (formates) and complete the reaction cycle. The reaction results indicate that (as also evidenced by in situ FTIR) the Ga2O3-Pd/SiO2 catalyst works as a true bi-functional system. The metal-promoter intimacy is not decisive in terms of the catalytic chemistry of the system, but the closeness between the Pd crystallites and the Ga2O3 surface patches boost the activity, owing to a minimized effort in the H s supply to the latter.

We present the measurements of charged particle pseudorapidity distributions dNch/dη performed by the NA50 experiment in Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. Measurements were done at incident energies of 40 GeV (√s = 8.77 GeV) and 158 GeV (√s = 17.3 GeV) per nucleon over a broad impact parameter range. The multiplicity distributions are studied as a function of centrality using the number of participating nucleons(N part ), or the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions (Ncoll). Their values at midrapidity exhibit a linear scaling withN part at both energies. Particle yield increases approximately by a factor of 2 betweeny √s = 8.77 GeV and √s = 17.3 GeV.

We perform a computational study of the interaction of a planar shock wave with a cylindrical vortex. We use a particularly robust High Resolution Shock Capturing scheme, Marquina's scheme, to obtain high quality, high resolution numerical simulations of the interaction. In the case of a very-strong shock/vortex encounter, we observe a severe reorganization of the flow field in the downstream region, which seems to be due mainly to the strength of the shock. The numerical data is analyzed to study the driving mechanisms for the production of vorticity in the interaction.

The production of low mass dimuons has been measured in d-C, d-U and S-U collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon, and in Pb-Pb collisions at 160 GeV per nucleon. Theϕ, ρ andω productions in S-U collision [1, 2] are extracted from a new set of data with increased statistic, and are throughϕ/(ω+ρ) ratio compared to first results on deuteron induced production. These new analyses are presented in the limitedM T domain of recent Pb-Pb measurement whose preliminary results are also presented.

KASCADE (KArlsruhe Shower Core and Array DEtector) is determining flux spectra for different primary mass groups to disentangle the knee feature of the primary cosmic-ray energy spectrum. The energy spectra of the light element groups result in a knee-like bending and a steepening above the knee. The topology of the individual knee positions suggests a rigidity dependence. To proof the rigidity dependence the KASCADE array is now extended by a factor 10 in area. The major goal of KASCADE-Grande is the observation of the ’iron-knee’ in the cosmic-ray spectrum at around 100 PeV which is expected following the KASCADE observations. PACS: 98.70.Sa Cosmic rays

The production of mesons containing strange quarks ($\Kzs$, $\phi$) and both singly and doubly strange baryons ($\rmLambda$, $\rmAlambda$, and $\Xis$) are measured at central rapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9 $\tev$ with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The results are obtained from the analysis of about 250 k minimum bias events recorded in 2009. Measurements of yields (dN/dy) and transverse momentum spectra at central rapidities for inelastic pp collisions are presented. For mesons, we report yields ($ $) of $0.184 \pm 0.002 \stat \pm 0.006 \syst$ for $\Kzs$ and $0.021 \pm 0.004 \stat \pm 0.003 \syst$ for $\phi$. For baryons, we find $ = 0.048 \pm 0.001 \stat \pm 0.004 \syst$ for $\rmLambda$, $0.047 \pm 0.002 \stat \pm 0.005 \syst$ for $\rmAlambda$ and $0.0101 \pm 0.0020 \stat \pm 0.0009 \syst$ for $\Xis$. The results are also compared with predictions for identified particle spectra from QCD-inspired models and provide a baseline for comparisons with both future pp measurements at higher energies and heavy-ion collisions.

The EAS-TOP Extensive Air Shower array, on top of the under-ground Gran Sasso Laboratory, is fully operating as a γ-ray astronomy observatory since the beginning of 1989. After showing the measured angular resolution of the detector, we present the results obtained from the analysis of 280 days of measurements in 1989–1990, with the purpose of investigating possible emission (d.c. and sporadic) from the candidate sources in the Northern hemisphere at an energy, >200 TeV.

First results on the lateral and temporal structures of EAS obtained from the EAS-TOP array are presented. A correlation between the slope of the lateral distribution function and the time delay of EAS particles with respect to the shower front at fixed core distance is found and discussed.

The objective of this study was to develop a technique which would permit access to the entire contents of long bones using a minimally invasive approach. Vascular catheterization techniques were used to allow access to the entire marrow cavity through a minimal percutaneous approach. A new device was also developed to reach the epiphysis of the long bone. The study was performed on animal and human anatomical specimens. A percutaneous approach was made through the bone shaft from a remote entry site using principles from endoscopy in an ex vivo experiment. This method may become an alternative technique when a direct approach to lesional sites in long bones is dangerous or impossible. For example, it could be used in cases of preventive cement injections in weakened bones.
