Background Neck pain is one of the most frequently reported musculoskeletal complaints among adults; its prevalence in the world is ranging from 16.7 to 75.1%. It can have an impact on a person’s physical, psychological, and social well-being. Along with pain, disability, muscle weakness, and alterations in the posture, neck pain patients are likely to develop affection of the respiratory function as reported in numerous studies. However, these patients are primarily managed with a musculoskeletal perspective with little or no emphasis to the changes observed in the respiratory system. There is a paucity of literature evaluating the need for respiratory rehabilitation in these patients. Main body All relevant published literature related to respiratory dysfunction in patients with chronic neck pain were critically reviewed in this study. Patients having chronic neck pain were found to have alterations in respiratory function in terms of reduced lung volumes, reduced chest mobility, and decreased respiratory muscle strength. Various factors such as decreased cervical range of motion, decreased strength of deep neck flexors and extensors, forward head posture, and pain are known to cause these dysfunctions. Respiratory system intervention in the form of breathing re-education and respiratory exercises are significantly proven to improve treatment outcomes. Conclusion There is limited literature relating to respiratory dysfunction and its management in neck pain patients. Incorporation of both respiratory and musculoskeletal assessments can enhance their treatment outcomes. Additionally, it can be suggested to consider intervention in the form of respiratory rehabilitation while strategizing treatment goals for these patients.

A wind-tunnel bioassay was developed to test for the presence of sex attractants in the paper wasp,Polistes exclamans Viereck (Hymenoptera: Vespidae). Males exhibited significant upwind flight and attraction (chemoanemotaxis) in response to airflow passed over unmated females, and to hexane extracts of whole bodies and thoraces of unmated females. Unmated females were attracted to hexane extracts of males and to hexane extracts of each body tagma of males, suggesting distribution of the pheromone over the cuticle by grooming. The ectal mandibular and seventh sternal glands are the likely sources of the male-produced sex attractant(s) since extracts of each elicited female attraction in the flight tunnel. These glands are associated with gastral and mandibular rubbing of perch sites by territorial males ofPolistes species.

The single-incision anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction evidently has its shortcomings. In an attempt to improve the biomechanical but also the biological state of the knees after an ACL-reconstruction, double, even triple-bundle reconstructions have been popularised recently. As a positive side effect, details concerning ACL-insertion anatomy were brought back into the focus. In our opinion it would be more straight forward and logical to replace the non-anatomical single-incision technique with a more anatomic single-bundle ACL-reconstruction technique.

As growing rod technology evolves, we discover complications of it’s use previously undescribed. Ventral rod migration(VRM) is a potentially catastrophic complication of growing rods. We defined VRM as ventral movement > 2 mm at the kyphotic apex, plotted from the posterior dorsal cortex of the apical lamina on axial CT. A review of CT imaging was conducted to assess for unidentified evidence of VRM. VRM was demonstrated in 3 patients, 1 of whom demonstrated rods positioned within the spinal canal.

This retrospective study compared the airway morphology of normal patients with patients with juvenile and adolescent onset idiopathic scoliosis and abnormal sagittal profile.

In over 3,700 facelifts in the last 40 years, the author has evolved a simple technique with a natural look. All cases were done with conscious sedation and local anesthesia. Patients are ambulatory immediately following surgery and have a rapid recovery with little edema or ecchymosis. Nerve injuries are avoided, and the temple hairline and earlobe clefts are preserved. There are no ridges, dimples, or "joker lines." The superficial musculocutaneous system (SMAS) is tenuous or absent in older patients and one has difficulty in elevating heavy jowls and outer canthal tissues with the usual SMAS technique. Therefore, a serial plication starting low in the jowl and extending up the cheek, spaced 12-15 mm apart, laces the face up just like lacing a shoe, making the entire face firm and youthful. Neck plication pulls the tissues up behind the ear and a platysmal sling keeps the earlobe up in its normal position (Figs. 1-2). The deep tissues are tightened in the temple, the temple hair flap can actually be pushed forward and preserved. This adapts well with ancillary procedures and most patients return to work in 7-10 days.

Winter flounder were captured by scuba divers from an area adjacent to a sulfite pulp and paper mill and from a reference site and the tissues examined for lesions. Severe hyperplasia of the gills, focal vacuolation in the liver, and multifocal hemosiderosis in the spleen and liver were most pronounced in large, adult fish collected near the mill. Lesions were less severe and prevalent in smaller fish. Vacuolation in the liver represents a preneoplastic lesion. The histopathological changes appear to be the result of chronic exposure. Few or no lesions were observed in the tissues of flounder taken from the reference site. Although the specific cause of these lesions is unknown, it is likely associated with cytotoxic compounds.

The secretion of the tegumental glands of the fifth and sixth gastral sternites ofP. dominulus and of its social parasiteP. sulcifer was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Seven long-chain carboxylic acids have been identified: hexadecanoic, octadecadienoic and octadecenoic acids are the major components of the gland secretion ofP. dominulus and octadecenoic acid the main compounds ofP. sulcifer sternal gland secretion. The same carboxylic acids have been found on the nest pedicel.

change in diaphragm volume less than convex, 1 had concave greater than convex, and 2 had equal volumes. For 3 patients with postoperative scans, concave change in rib cage volume increased 57% (convex, 72%) and change in diaphragm volume increased 128% (convex, 109%). Concave kidney excursion increased 6.3 mm (320%), and convex 5.2 mm (192%). Complications included 2 patients with migration of devices proximally. Conclusions: Quantitative dMRI can measure separate contributions of diaphragm and rib cage to lung expansion during respiration for each hemithorax, enabling accurate assessment of thoracic function for the first time. Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib treatment appears to increase rib cage expansion more on the convex side of the thorax than the concave, and conversely increases diaphragm excursion on the concave side. With treatment, renal excursion increases bilaterally, concave more than convex, probably reducing a blockade effect on the diaphragm. Quantitative dMRI has the potential to increase understanding of the anatomic mechanisms of spine/chest wall deformity that cause restrictive lung disease in NM scoliosis, and may enable the development of new treatments for it.

Respected Sir, I read the article “Anatomic liver resection of segment 6, 7, and 8 by the method of selective occlusion of hepatic inflow” published in this journal [1]. The authors have presented a case of hepatocellular carcinoma involving segment 6, 7, and 8 with inadequate future liver remnant if right hepatectomy would have been performed, where they craftily performed anatomical resection of segment 6, 7, and 8. At the outset, I would like to mention that the intention of this letter is purely academic rather than criticizing someone. This paper was published under the section of “surgical techniques and innovations,” so I started reading this article with expectation of technical details of this clever procedure. For anatomic segmental liver resection, the most important trick is to get the pedicle of a particular segment. In this particular case, to perform anatomical resection, we need to get pedicles at three different places to get the demarcation: (a) right Glissonean pedicle for getting demarcation between the right and left lobes of the liver, (b) right anterior or posterior pedicle to get demarcation between right anterior and right posterior sectors, (c) segment 5 or 8 pedicle to get demarcation between segment 5 and 8. We can get right main and right anterior or posterior pedicles either extra or intrahepatic. It would be more helpful and would have carried out the meaning of this section of journal if the authors have mentioned in detail how they got these pedicles and which method was used. Even more important part of this procedure is to get and occlude the pedicle of segment 5 or 8 to get the demarcation between them. Authors have not clearly mentioned how they got demarcation between segment 5 and 8, which is a critical technical part in this procedure for which the viewers are more interested. As mentioned earlier, right main and right anterior or posterior pedicle can be approached extrahepatic or intrahepatic by hepatotomy. To get the pedicle of segment 5 and 8, hepatotomy does require. In this case, after ligating the right posterior pedicle, initial parenchymal transaction along the demarcation line between the right anterior and posterior sector would help to follow the right anterior pedicle. Further, following the right anterior pedicle would identify the segment 5 and 8 division, and ligating segment 8 pedicle would help to get demarcation between segment 5 and 8. I conclude by saying that the authors had performed and described very important and interesting procedure, but providing the deeper detail of the technical part in their article would have better justified this section of the journal.

Dear Editor, We thank Yilmaz et al. for their interest in our article [1]. In their letter, Yilmaz et al. also reported one case of “multiple” endodermal cysts in the medulla oblongata, and they recommended observation, if the lesion is small and the patient has no symptom. We agree with them, but only partially for two reasons. First of all, there was no pathologic diagnosis. The MR signal of endodermal cyst varies, depending on the content of a cyst [2, 3]. Usually, the cyst wall is not enhanced, but it can sometimes be enhanced as demonstrated in our case [1]. Yilmaz et al. emphasized the rarity of their multiple endodermal cysts. However, the multiplicity, we think, could also suggest that they might not be endodermal cysts. Based on the findings of MR imaging they supplied, without the diffusion image, we rather think that the lesions could be another pathology such as an epidermoid cyst or other cystic lesions. For endodermal cysts, a radiological study cannot confirm the disease, and it is simply one of the tools for differential diagnosis. Second, for most small and asymptomatic lesions, surgical removal is clearly unnecessary, and periodic radiologic follow-up is enough. However, if the cystic lesion causes symptoms or continues to grow, surgical intervention is unavoidable. In our paper, we did not recommend total resection for all cases regardless of the location and surgical findings. However, considering the relatively higher risk of recurrence of this cyst, we should try to remove the cystic wall as much as possible. To avoid surgical morbidity and to determine the extent of resection, vigorous monitoring like motor evoked potential is essential. If the lesion cannot be completely removed, especially in a case of intramedullary location, shunting into the adjacent subarachnoid space could be considered for the prevention of reaccumulation of the cystic content. In that case, short-term imaging follow-up is needed [4]. As shown in our case [1], the cyst recurred in only 18 months after initial surgery and required a second surgery. We have carefully observed the residual cyst for a relatively short period of 5 years, and we believe the cyst has not recurred because of the radical excision in the second surgery.

The effects of paper mill effluents on histological, enzyme histochemical and ultrastructural parameters of the liver of male bullhead (Cottus gobio L.) were investigated in an alpine river at the end of the low-water period (in March). Histological examination revealed a marked depletion of glycogen, necrosis of single hepatocytes and a high degree of liver parasitization. The enzyme histochemical tests for acid phosphatase and nonspecific esterase signaled lysosomal alterations. Ultrastructural findings showed a loss of cellular compartmentalization, lysosomal alterations, proliferation of smooth endoplasmic reticulum and peroxisomes, proliferation of collagen fibers in the space of Disse, and hepatic cell necrosis. Histological examination revealed a marked improvement in the condition of the liver after the high-water period.

Clinical signs of whiplash are presently not well understood. Vertebral artery (VA) stretch during trauma is a possible pathomechanism that could explain some aspects of the whiplash symptom complex. This study quantified the VA elongation during whiplash simulation using an in vitro model. Seven fresh human cadaveric specimens (occiput to C7 or T1) were carefully dissected, preserving the osteoligamentous structures. The right VA was replaced with a thin nylon-coated flexible cable. This cable was fixed at one end to the occipital bone and at the other end to a specially designed VA transducer. Physiological motion of the occiput and physiological elongation of the VA were measured with a standard flexibility test. Next the specimen was mounted on a specially designed sled and subjected to 2.5, 4.5, 6.5, and 8.5 g (1 g = 9.81 m/s2) horizontal accelerations. Elongation of the VA was continuously recorded from the start of the trauma. The average (standard deviation) physiological VA elongation was 5.8 (1.6) mm in left lateral bending and 4.7 (1.8) mm in left axial rotation. Flexion and extension did not result in any appreciable elongation of the VA. The maximum VA elongation during the whiplash trauma significantly correlated with the horizontal acceleration of the sled (R2 = 0.7, P0.05). The VA exceeded its physiological range by 1.0 (2.1), 3.1 (2.6), 8.9 (1.6), and 9.0 (5.9) mm in the 2.5-, 4.5-, 6.5-, and 8.5-g trauma classes respectively.

Paper Chromatography of Muscle Tissue Constituents: A Phosphate-absorbing Protein from Muscular Tissue

The Drosophila neuromuscular junction is an excellent model for neuroscience research. However, the distribution of neuromuscular junctions is very diffuse, and it is not easy to accurately locate during ultrathin sectioning, which seriously interferes with the ultrastructural analysis under electron microscopy that only has a small field of view. Here, we reported an efficient method for acquiring the ultrastructural picture of neuromuscular junctions in Drosophila larva under electron microscopy. The procedure was as follows: first, the larval sample of body wall muscle was placed between the metal mesh and was dehydrated with alcohol and infiltrated with epoxy resin to prevent the sample from curling or bending, after it was dissected and fixed into thin slices. Second, the sample was embedded in resin into a flat sheet to facilitate the positioning of the muscles. Third, carefully and gradually remove the excess resin and the cuticle of the larvae, cut off both ends of the special body segment, and trim the excess specific muscles according to the recommended ratio of trimming muscles, which would reduce the workload exponentially. At last, the trimmed sample were prepared into serial about 1000 ultrathin sections that was about total 80 microns thickness, and 30–40 sections were gathered into a grid to stain with lead citrate and uranyl acetate. This method could also be applied to the other small and thin samples such as the Drosophila embryo, ventral nerve cord and brain.

We describe the tympanic anatomy of the petrosal of Deltatherium fundaminis, an enigmatic Paleocene mammal based on cranial specimens recovered from New Mexico, U.S.A. Although the ear region of Deltatherium has previously been described, there has not been a comprehensive, well-illustrated contribution using current anatomical terminology. The dental and cranial anatomy of Deltatherium is a chimera, with morphological similarities to both ‘condylarth’ and ‘cimolestan’ taxa. As such, the phylogenetic relationships of this taxon have remained elusive since its discovery, and it has variably been associated with Arctocyonidae, Pantodonta and Tillodontia. The petrosal of Deltatherium is anteriorly bordered by an open space comprising a contiguous carotid opening and pyriform fenestra. The promontorium features both a small rostral tympanic process and small epitympanic wing but lacks well-marked sulci. A large ventral facing external aperture of the canaliculus cochleae is present and bordered posteriorly by a well-developed caudal tympanic process. The hiatus Fallopii opens on the ventral surface of the petrosal. The tegmen tympani is mediolaterally broad and anteriorly expanded, and its anterior margin is perforated by a foramen for the ramus superior of the stapedial artery. The tympanohyal is small but approximates the caudal tympanic process to nearly enclose the stylomastoid notch. The mastoid is widely exposed on the basicranium and bears an enlarged mastoid process, separate from the paraoccipital process. These new observations provide novel anatomical data corroborating previous hypotheses regarding the plesiomorphic eutherian condition but also reveal subtle differences among Paleocene eutherians that have the potential to help inform the phylogeny of Deltatherium.

Increasing prevalence and scale of natural disasters fuel the need for new approaches to evaluating, and eventually mitigating, their impact. This analysis quantifies and compares online and social media attention to hurricanes and wildfires over time and geographic space. Hurricanes studied included: Michael, Maria, Irma, Harvey, and Florence. Fires studied included: Woolsey, Mendocino, Carr, and Camp. It was hypothesized that total volume of online media content, measured in posts and mentions, varied measurably over the phases of the disasters. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that the anatomy of the disaster, specifically the number and timing/dates, of posts and mentions varied inside versus outside impacted zones/geographies. Social media content, in sheer volume, related to hurricanes was larger than that devoted to fires. A mismatch between the time periods that people post about natural disasters on social media and the times when aid is needed to rebuild was found. Mentions fell rapidly after landfall for hurricanes, and long before fires were officially contained or extinguished. This rapid fall in media attention may leave directly impacted populations without help and support during the rebuilding process. Greater understanding of volume of posts over time, or the anatomy of disasters in online media space, may help government agencies, private industry, and relief organizations understand public attentiveness before, during, and after various types of natural disasters.

Objectives Functional connectivity (FC) is increasingly used as target for neuromodulation and enhancement of performance. A reliable assessment of FC with electroencephalography (EEG) currently requires a laboratory environment with high-density montages and a long preparation time. This study investigated the feasibility of reconstructing source FC with a low-density EEG montage towards a usage in real life applications. Methods Source FC was reconstructed with inverse solutions and quantified as node degree of absolute imaginary coherence in alpha frequencies. We used simulated coherent point sources as well as two real datasets to investigate the impact of electrode density (19 vs. 128 electrodes) and usage of template vs. individual MRI-based head models on localization accuracy. In addition, we checked whether low-density EEG is able to capture inter-individual variations in coherence strength. Results In numerical simulations as well as real data, a reduction of the number of electrodes led to less reliable reconstructions of coherent sources and of coupling strength. Yet, when comparing different approaches to reconstructing FC from 19 electrodes, source FC obtained with beamformers outperformed sensor FC, FC computed after independent component analysis, and source FC obtained with sLORETA. In particular, only source FC based on beamformers was able to capture neural correlates of motor behavior. Conclusion Reconstructions of FC from low-density EEG is challenging, but may be feasible when using source reconstructions with beamformers.

To study the neuroanatomical correlate of involuntary unilateral blinking in humans, using the example of patients with focal epilepsy. Patients with drug resistant focal epilepsy undergoing presurgical evaluation with stereotactically implanted EEG-electrodes (sEEG) were recruited from the local epilepsy monitoring unit. Only patients showing ictal unilateral blinking or unilateral blinking elicited by direct electrical stimulation were included (n = 16). MRI and CT data were used for visualization of the electrode positions. In two patients, probabilistic tractography with seeding from the respective electrodes was additionally performed. Three main findings were made: (1) involuntary unilateral blinking was associated with activation of the anterior temporal region, (2) tractography showed widespread projections to the ipsilateral frontal, pericentral, occipital, limbic and cerebellar regions and (3) blinking was observed predominantly in female patients with temporal lobe epilepsies. Unilateral blinking was found to be associated with an ipsilateral activation of the anterior temporal region. We suggest that the identified network is not part of the primary blinking control but might have modulating influence on ipsilateral blinking by integrating contextual information.

PURPOSE: To assess the anatomy of the spinal accessory nerve (SAN), its variations and the landmark of level II B lymph nodes. METHODS: Prospective study included 50 patients from 2016 to 2018.The predictor variables were drawn from demographic details of the patients; SAN was analyzed intraoperatively with the parameters like the nerve relationship with the IJV, SCM muscle, contributions of cervical plexus and a new parameter of length from midpoint of clavicle to entry of nerve in the trapezius muscle in the lower part of neck which was studied for the first time and forms the prime identification landmark to preserve the nerve. Outcome variables were details of anatomic variations and branches and utility of these landmarks in prevention of nerve injury. RESULTS: Sample consisted of 38 (76%) male and 12 (24%) female patients. The SAN with respect to the IJV was dorsal in 42% patients and ventral in 58%. In 54% cases, SAN gave a branch to the SCM without penetrating the muscle and in 46% gave a branch to the SCM penetrating the muscle. SAN received contributions from the C2 root of the cervical plexus in 68%, both C2 and C3 in 54% and C3 in 50% cases. Mean length from measurements recorded between mid-line of clavicle to insertion of SAN to trapezius muscle and entry of SAN into trapezius muscle was 59 mm with variations recorded in gender and short/long neck. CONCLUSION: The result of this study suggests that parameters used are simple clinical tools for identification of the SAN and its variations resulting in no nerve injury. It is prudent for the surgeon to have knowledge of sound anatomical landmarks with the variations in the SAN course which avoids morbidity and improves the quality of life.

Advancements in ultra-high field (7 T and higher) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners have made it possible to investigate both the structure and function of the human brain at a sub-millimeter scale. As neuronal feedforward and feedback information arrives in different layers, sub-millimeter functional MRI has the potential to uncover information processing between cortical micro-circuits across cortical depth, i.e. laminar fMRI. For nearly all conventional fMRI analyses, the main assumption is that the relationship between local neuronal activity and the blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signal adheres to the principles of linear systems theory. For laminar fMRI, however, directional blood pooling across cortical depth stemming from the anatomy of the cortical vasculature, potentially violates these linear system assumptions, thereby complicating analysis and interpretation. Here we assess whether the temporal additivity requirement of linear systems theory holds for laminar fMRI. We measured responses elicited by viewing stimuli presented for different durations and evaluated how well the responses to shorter durations predicted those elicited by longer durations. We find that BOLD response predictions are consistently good predictors for observed responses, across all cortical depths, and in all measured visual field maps (V1, V2, and V3). Our results suggest that the temporal additivity assumption for linear systems theory holds for laminar fMRI. We thus show that the temporal additivity assumption holds across cortical depth for sub-millimeter gradient-echo BOLD fMRI in early visual cortex. The use of electroencephalography (EEG) to study overt speech production has increased substantially in the past 15 years and the alignment of evoked potential (ERPs) on the response onset has become an extremely useful method to target “latest” stages of speech production. Yet, response-locked ERPs raise a methodological issue: on which event should the point of alignment be placed? Response-locked ERPs are usually aligned to the vocal (acoustic) onset, although it is well known that articulatory movements may start up to a hundred milliseconds prior to the acoustic onset and that this “articulatory onset to acoustic onset interval” (AAI) depends on the phoneme properties. Given the previously reported difficulties to measure the AAI, the purpose of this study was to determine if the AAI could be reliably detected with EEG-microstates. High-density EEG was recorded during delayed speech production of monosyllabic pseudowords with four different onset consonants. Whereas the acoustic response onsets varied depending on the onset consonant, the response-locked spatiotemporal EEG analysis revealed a clear asynchrony of the same sequence of microstates across onset consonants. A specific microstate, the latest observed in the ERPs locked to the vocal onset, presented longer duration for phonemes with longer acoustic response onsets. Converging evidences seemed to confirm that this microstate may be related to the articulatory onset of motor execution: its scalp topography corresponded to those previously associated with muscle activity and source localization highlighted the involvement of motor areas. Finally, the analyses on the duration of such microstate in single trials further fit with the AAI intervals for specific phonemes reported in previous studies. These results thus suggest that a particular ERP-microstate is a reliable index of articulation onset and of the AAI. Analysis of the angioarchitecture and quantification of the conduit vessels and microvasculature is of paramount importance for understanding the physiological and pathological processes within the central nervous system (CNS). Most of the available in vivo imaging methods lack penetration depth and/or resolution. Some ex vivo methods may provide better resolution, but are mainly destructive, as they are designed for imaging the CNS tissues after their removal from the skull or vertebral column. The removal procedure inevitably alters the in situ relations of the investigated structures and damages the dura mater and leptomeninges. µAngiofil, a polymer-based contrast agent, permits a qualitatively novel postmortem microangio-computed tomography (microangioCT) approach with excellent resolution and, therefore, visualization of the smallest brain capillaries. The datasets obtained empower a rather straightforward quantitative analysis of the vascular tree, including the microvasculature. The µAngiofil has an excellent filling capacity as well as a radio-opacity higher than the one of bone tissue, which allows imaging the cerebral microvasculature even within the intact skull or vertebral column. This permits in situ visualization and thus investigation of the dura mater and leptomeningeal layers as well as their blood supply in their original geometry. Moreover, the methodology introduced here permits correlative approaches, i.e., microangioCT followed by classical histology, immunohistochemistry and even electron microscopy. The experimental approach presented here makes use of common desktop microCT scanners, rendering it a promising everyday tool for the evaluation of the (micro)vasculature of the central nervous system in preclinical and basic research. Ear-EEG allows to record brain activity in every-day life, for example to study natural behaviour or unhindered social interactions. Compared to conventional scalp-EEG, ear-EEG uses fewer electrodes and covers only a small part of the head. Consequently, ear-EEG will be less sensitive to some cortical sources. Here, we perform realistic electromagnetic simulations to compare cEEGrid ear-EEG with 128-channel cap-EEG. We compute the sensitivity of ear-EEG for different cortical sources, and quantify the expected signal loss of ear-EEG relative to cap-EEG. Our results show that ear-EEG is most sensitive to sources in the temporal cortex. Furthermore, we show how ear-EEG benefits from a multi-channel configuration (i.e. cEEGrid). The pipelines presented here can be adapted to any arrangement of electrodes and can therefore provide an estimate of sensitivity to cortical regions, thereby increasing the chance of successful experiments using ear-EEG. We present a novel patient-specific fluid-solid-growth framework to model the mechanobiological state of clinically detected intracranial aneurysms (IAs) and their evolution. The artery and IA sac are modeled as thick-walled, non-linear elastic fiber-reinforced composites. We represent the undulation distribution of collagen fibers: the adventitia of the healthy artery is modeled as a protective sheath whereas the aneurysm sac is modeled to bear load within physiological range of pressures. Initially, we assume the detected IA is stable and then consider two flow-related mechanisms to drive enlargement: (1) low wall shear stress; (2) dysfunctional endothelium which is associated with regions of high oscillatory flow. Localized collagen degradation and remodelling gives rise to formation of secondary blebs on the aneurysm dome. Restabilization of blebs is achieved by remodelling of the homeostatic collagen fiber stretch distribution. The anterior abdominal wall, which is composed of three layers (skin and adipose tissues; the myofascial layer; and the deep layer, consisting of the transversalis fascia, preperitoneal fat, and the parietal peritoneum), has many functions: containment, support and protection for the intraperitoneal contents, and involvement in movement and breathing. While hernias are often encountered and well reviewed in the literature, the other abdominal wall pathologies are less commonly described. In this pictorial review, we briefly discuss the normal anatomy of the anterior abdominal wall, describe the normal ultrasonographic anatomy, and present a wide range of pathologic abnormalities beyond hernias. Sonography emerges as the diagnostic imaging of first choice for assessing abdominal wall disorders, thus representing a valuable tool for ensuring appropriate management and limiting functional impairment.

Recently, exploring brain activity based on functional networks during naturalistic stimuli especially music and video represents an attractive challenge because of the low signal-to-noise ratio in collected brain data. Although most efforts focusing on exploring the listening brain have been made through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), sensor-level electro- or magnetoencephalography (EEG/MEG) technique, little is known about how neural rhythms are involved in the brain network activity under naturalistic stimuli. This study exploited cortical oscillations through analysis of ongoing EEG and musical feature during freely listening to music. We used a data-driven method that combined music information retrieval with spatial Fourier Independent Components Analysis (spatial Fourier–ICA) to probe the interplay between the spatial profiles and the spectral patterns of the brain network emerging from music listening. Correlation analysis was performed between time courses of brain networks extracted from EEG data and musical feature time series extracted from music stimuli to derive the musical feature related oscillatory patterns in the listening brain. We found brain networks of musical feature processing were frequency-dependent. Musical feature time series, especially fluctuation centroid and key feature, were associated with an increased beta activation in the bilateral superior temporal gyrus. An increased alpha oscillation in the bilateral occipital cortex emerged during music listening, which was consistent with alpha functional suppression hypothesis in task-irrelevant regions. We also observed an increased delta–beta oscillatory activity in the prefrontal cortex associated with musical feature processing. The waveform in the time domain, spectrum in the frequency domain, and topography in the space domain of component(s) of interest are the fundamental indices in neuroscience research. Despite the application of time–frequency analysis (TFA) to extract the temporal and spectral characteristics of non-phase-locked component (NPLC) of interest simultaneously, the statistical results are not always expectedly satisfying, in that the spatial information is not considered. Complex Morlet wavelet transform is widely applied to TFA of event-related-potential (ERP) data, and mother wavelet (which should be firstly defined by center frequency and bandwidth (CFBW) before using the method to TFA of ERP data) influences the time–frequency results. In this study, an optimal set of CFBW was firstly selected from the number sets of CFBW, to further analyze for TFA of the ERP data in a cognitive experiment paradigm of emotion (Anger and Neutral) and task (Go and Nogo). Then tensor decomposition algorithm was introduced to investigate the NPLC of interest from the fourth-order tensor. Compared with the TFA results which only revealed a significant difference between Go and Nogo task condition, the tensor-based analysis showed significant interaction effect between emotion and task. Moreover, significant differences were found in both emotion and task conditions through tensor decomposition. In addition, the statistical results of TFA would be affected by the selected region of interest (ROI), whereas those of the proposed method were not subject to ROI. Hence, this study demonstrated that tensor decomposition method was effective in extracting NPLC, by considering spatial information simultaneously as the potential to explore the brain mechanisms related to experimental design.

Purpose Posterior capsular contracture causes stiffness during knee extension in knee osteoarthritis. Furthermore, in posterior-stabilized total knee arthroplasty (PS-TKA), a unique design such as the cam mechanism could conflict with the posterior capsule (PC) causing flexion contracture (FC). However, few studies have focused on the anatomical aspects of the PC. This study aimed to investigate the anatomical site and forms of posterior capsular attachment to the femoral cortex, and to evaluate the efficacy of posterior capsular release for FC by assessing changes in knee extension angles using a navigation system. Methods Attachment sites of the PC were investigated in 10 cadaveric knees using computed tomography. PS-TKA was performed in six cadaveric knees using a navigation system to evaluate the efficacy of posterior capsular release for FC. Posterior capsular release was performed stepwise at each part of the femoral condyle. Results The gastrocnemius tendon and PC were integrally attached to the femoral cortex at the medial and lateral condyles, whereas the PC at the intercondylar fossa was independently attached directly to the femoral cortex. Moreover, the PC at the intercondylar fossa was attached most distally among each femoral condyle. Posterior capsular release at the intercondylar fossa allowed 11.4° ± 2.8° improvement in knee extension. This angle was further improved by 5.5° ± 1.3°, after subsequent capsular release at the medial and lateral condyles. Conclusion The forms and sites of posterior capsular attachment differed based on the part of the femoral condyle. Stepwise posterior capsular release was effective for FC in PS-TKA. Purpose The flexor digitorum longus and posterior tibial tendon as well as the perforating veins are located along the distal posteromedial tibial border. Adipose tissue may surround these structures and possibly play a role in reducing mechanical stress. This study aimed to examine the adipose tissue along the posteromedial tibial border via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and gross anatomical examination. Methods The lower legs of 11 healthy individuals were examined every 3 cm from the medial malleolus using MRI and ultrasound. The fat fraction was calculated using fat fraction images. In addition, the gross anatomy of the flexor digitorum longus origin and adipose tissue along the posteromedial tibial border was examined in seven fresh cadavers. The fat fraction was compared at different heights along the posteromedial tibial border and in Kager’s fat pads; we also compared the height of the flexor digitorum longus origin and adipose tissue. Results In vivo, the adipose tissue was identified along the entire posteromedial tibial border using MRI and ultrasound. There was no significant difference in fat fraction between Kager’s fat pads and the adipose tissue along the posteromedial tibial border, except at the 6 cm mark. All seven cadavers presented adipose tissue along the posteromedial tibial border, significantly more distal than the flexor digitorum longus origin. Conclusion The adipose tissue was identified along the posteromedial tibial border via MRI, ultrasound, and gross anatomical examination; thus, this tissue may play a role in reducing friction and compressive stress in tendons.

Purpose (1) To evaluate the biomechanical properties of a porcine flexor digitorum superficialis tendon graft with preserved muscle fibers and (2) to compare these results with the biomechanical properties of a porcine tendon graft after removal of associated muscle. Methods Eighty-two porcine forelegs were dissected and the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle tendons were harvested. The study comprised of two groups: Group 1 (G1), harvested tendon with preserved muscle tissue; and Group 2 (G2), harvested contralateral tendon with removal of all muscle tissue. Tests in both groups were conducted using an electro-mechanical material testing machine (Instron, model 23-5S, Instron Corp., Canton, MA, USA) with a 500 N force transducer. Yield load, stiffness, and maximum load were evaluated and compared between groups. Results The behavior of the autografts during the tests followed the same stretching, deformation, and failure patterns as those observed in human autografts subjected to axial strain. There were no significant differences in the comparison between groups for ultimate load to failure (p = 0.105), stiffness (p = 0.097), and energy (p = 0.761). Conclusion In this porcine model biomechanical study, using autograft tendon with preserved muscle showed no statistically significant differences for yield load, stiffness, or maximum load compared to autograft tendon without preserved muscle. The preservation of muscle on the autograft tendon did not compromise the mechanical properties of the autograft. Level of evidence Level III Controlled laboratory study

Controversies exist on the influence of lower pole anatomy (infundibular pelvic angle, IPA; infundibular length, IL; and infundibular width, IW) for success and outcomes related to the treatment of stones in the lower pole. We wanted to look at the role of lower pole anatomy to study clinical outcomes in patients treated for isolated lower pole stones (LPS) using retrograde intra renal surgery (RIRS), and also perform a review to look at the published literature on the influence of pelvicalyceal anatomy on success with RIRS. Data were prospectively collected (June 2013-June 2016) for all patients who underwent RIRS for LPS, and the imaging was then retrospectively reviewed to calculate the IPA, IL and IW using the Elbahnasy method. A systematic review was also conducted for all English language articles between January 2000 and April 2018, reporting on the impact of pelvicaliceal anatomy on RIRS. A total of 108 patients with LPS were included with a male to female ratio of 2:3 and a mean age of 54.7 years. In this brief communication, which complements the EEG reference review (Yao et al. in Brain Topogr, 2019), we provide the mathematical derivations that show: (1) any EEG reference admits the general form of a linear transformation of the ideal multichannel EEG potentials with reference to infinity; (2) the average reference (AR), the reference electrode standardization technique (REST), and its regularized version (rREST) are solving the linear inverse problems that can be derived from both the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) and the Bayesian theory; however, REST is based on more informative prior/constraint of volume conduction than that of AR; (3) we show for the first time that REST is also a unipolar reference (UR), allowing us to define a general family of URs with unified notations; (4) some notable properties of URs are 'no memory', 'rank deficient by 1', and 'orthogonal projector centering'; (5) we also point out here, for the first time, that rREST provides the optimal interpolating function that can be used when the reference channel is missing or the 'bad' channels are rejected. The derivations and properties imply that: (a) any two URs can transform to each other and referencing with URs multiple times will not accumulate artifacts; (b) whatever URs the EEG data was previously transformed with, the minimum norm solution to the reference problem will be REST and AR with and without modeling volume conduction, respectively; (c) the MLE and the Bayesian theory show the theoretical optimality of REST. The advantages and limitations of AR and REST are discussed to guide readers for their proper use.

Fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) have distinct visual systems at different stages of development. Larvae have stemmata and adults have compound eyes. Adults use compound eyes to mediate photic communication during courtship. Larvae do not manifest this behavior, yet they are bioluminescent. We investigated the structure of stemmata in Photuris firefly larvae to identify anatomical substrates (i.e., rhabdomeres) conferring visual function. Stemmata were located bilaterally on the antero-lateral surfaces of the head. Beneath the ~ 130 µm diameter lens, we identified a pigmented eye-cup. At its widest point, the eye-cup was ~ 150 µm in diameter. The optic nerve exited the eye-cup opposite the lens. Two distinct regions, asymmetric in size and devoid of pigmentation, were characterized in stemmata cross-sections. We refer to these regions as lobes. Each lobe contained a rhabdom of a radial network of rhabdomeres. Pairs of rhabdomeres formed interdigitating microvilli contributed from neighboring photoreceptor cell bodies. The optic nerve contained 88 axons separable into two populations based on size. The number of axons in the optic nerve together with distinct rhabdoms suggests these structures were formed from ‘fusion stemmata.’ This structural specialization provides an anatomical substrate for future studies of visually mediated behaviors in Photuris larvae.
