IntroductionCOVID-19-related (vs. non-related) articles appear to be more expeditiously processed and published in peer-reviewed journals. We aimed to evaluate: (i) whether COVID-19-related preprints were favored for publication, (ii) preprinting trends and public discussion of the preprints, and (iii) the relationship between the publication topic (COVID-19-related or not) and quality issues.MethodsManuscripts deposited at bioRxiv and medRxiv between January 1 and September 27 were assessed for the probability of publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and those published were evaluated for submission-to-acceptance time. The extent of public discussion was assessed based on Altmetric and Disqus data. The Retraction Watch Database and PubMed were used to explore the retraction of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 articles and preprints.ResultsWith adjustment for the preprinting server and number of deposited versions, COVID-19-related preprints were more likely to be published within 120 days since the deposition of the first version (OR=2.04, 95%CI 1.87-2.23) as well as over the entire observed period (OR=1.42, 95%CI 1.33-1.52). Submission-to-acceptance was by 38.67 days (95%CI 34.96-42.39) shorter for COVID-19 articles. Public discussion of preprints was modest and COVID-19 articles were overrepresented in the pool of retracted articles in 2020.ConclusionCurrent data suggest a preference for publication of COVID-19-related preprints over the observed period.

This opening issue of Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry for 2012 celebrates the 10th anniversary of Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry and highlights current research by the Editors and members of the International Advisory Board. The strong commitment and dedication of the Editors and Advisory Board have been of enormous value in establishing ABC as an international journal of high rank and standing, publishing innovative research papers from all areas of analytical and bioanalytical science. In preparing this special issue, we are grateful for the overwhelming support we have received and thank the contributors for generously providing thirty-four research papers, nine critical reviews, and seven trend articles from the forefront of their research. Below, we invite you to meet the contributors to this exceptional 10th anniversary issue. Edgar A. Arriaga was Fesler–Lampert Chair in Aging Studies from 2007 to 2008 and is currently Professor of Chemistry at the College of Science and Engineering, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN (USA). He is also a graduate of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, Gerontology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Biophysics. He is a chartered member of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Review Study Section Emerging Biotechnologies. His research program focuses on the development of bioanalytical methods to investigate tissue complexity, single cells, and subcellular compartments. Applications of these methods include determination of the subcellular fate and metabolism of xenobiotics, and investigating subcellular processes associated with the causes of aging.

The current issue (volume 13 issue 62,021) is a Special Issue jointly dedicated to scientific content presented at the 20th triennial IUPAB Congress that was held in conjunction with both the 45th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Biophysical Society (Sociedade Brasileira de Biofísica - SBBf) and the 50th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Sociedade Brasileira de Bioquímica e Biologia Molecular – SBBq). In addition to describing the scientific and nonscientific content arising from the meeting this sub-editorial also provides a look back at some of the high points for Biophysical Reviews in the year 2021 before going on to describe a number of matters of interest to readers of the journal in relation to the coming year of 2022.

As an incoming IUPAB Councilor, I have been asked to write a short commentary describing myself and my career in science. Throughout my scientific life, my interests have evolved from initially trying to understand the physical and chemical properties of small molecules toward unraveling biological systems. To that end, I now apply biophysical, biochemical and chemistry tools. Along my journey, I developed and applied nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy methods to figure out how proteins work at the atomic level and this voyage took me from Germany, where I earned degrees in Physics and Chemistry, to the UK and back to Germany, finally dropping anchor in the USA, where I have led research programs at both the National Institutes of Health and the University of Pittsburgh. I am now the UPMC Rosalind Franklin Professor and Chair of the Department of Structural Biology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, a Professor of Bioengineering, Swanson School of Engineering, and a Professor of Chemistry, Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, University of Pittsburgh.

This study investigates the potential of citation analysis of Ph.D. theses to obtain valid and useful early career performance indicators at the level of university departments. For German theses from 1996 to 2018 the suitability of citation data from Scopus and Google Books is studied and found to be sufficient to obtain quantitative estimates of early career researchers’ performance at departmental level in terms of scientific recognition and use of their dissertations as reflected in citations. Scopus and Google Books citations complement each other and have little overlap. Individual theses’ citation counts are much higher for those awarded a dissertation award than others. Departmental level estimates of citation impact agree reasonably well with panel committee peer review ratings of early career researcher support.

White matter pathologies are critically involved in the etiology of vascular cognitive impairment-dementia (VCID), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Alzheimer's disease and related diseases (ADRD), and therefore need to be considered a treatable target ( Roseborough A, Hachinski V, Whitehead S. White matter degeneration - a treatable target? Roseborough et al. JAMA Neurol [Internet]. 2020 Apr 27;77(7):793-4, [1] . To help address this often-missed area of research, several workshops have been sponsored by the Leo and Anne Albert Charitable Trust since 2015, resulting in the incorporation of "The Albert Research Institute for White Matter and Cognition" in 2020. The first annual "Institute" meeting was held virtually on March 3-4, 2021. The Institute provides a forum and workspace for communication and support of the advancement of white matter science and research to better understand the evolution and prevention of dementia. It serves as a platform for young investigator development, to introduce new data and debate biology mechanisms and new ideas, and to encourage and support new research collaborations and directions to clarify how white matter changes, with other genetic and health risk factors, contribute to cognitive impairment. Similar to previous Albert Trust-sponsored workshops (Barone et al. in J Transl Med 14:1-14, [2]; Sorond et al. in GeroScience 42:81-96, [3]), established expert investigators were identified and invited to present. Opportunities to attend and present were also extended by invitation to talented research fellows and younger scientists. Also, updates on institute-funded research collaborations were provided and discussed. The summary that follows is a synopsis of topics and discussion covered in the workshop.

The RIKEN BioResource Research Center (BRC) was established in 2001 as a comprehensive biological resource center in Japan. The Experimental Animal Division, one of the BRC infrastructure divisions, has been designated as the core facility for mouse resources within the National BioResource Project (NBRP) by the Japanese government since FY2002. Our activities regarding the collection, preservation, quality control, and distribution of mouse resources have been supported by the research community, including evaluations and guidance on advancing social and research needs, as well as the operations and future direction of the BRC. Expenditure for collection, preservation, and quality-control operations of the BRC, as a national core facility, has been funded by the government, while distribution has been separately funded by users’ reimbursement fees. We have collected over 9000 strains created mainly by Japanese scientists including Nobel laureates and researchers in cutting-edge fields and distributed mice to 7000 scientists with 1500 organizations in Japan and globally. Our users have published 1000 outstanding papers and a few dozen patents. The collected mouse resources are accessible via the RIKEN BRC website, with a revised version of the searchable online catalog. In addition, to enhance the visibility of useful strains, we have launched web corners designated as the “Mouse of the Month” and “Today’s Tool and Model.” Only high-demand strains are maintained in live colonies, while other strains are cryopreserved as embryos or sperm to achieve cost-effective management. Since 2007, the RIKEN BRC has built up a back-up facility in the RIKEN Harima branch to protect the deposited strains from disasters. Our mice have been distributed with high quality through the application of strict microbial and genetic quality control programs that cover a globally accepted pathogens list and mutated alleles generated by various methods. Added value features, such as information about users’ publications, standardized phenotyping data, and genome sequences of the collected strains, are important to facilitate the use of our resources. We have added and disseminated such information in collaboration with the NBRP Information Center and the NBRP Genome Information Upgrading Program. The RIKEN BRC has participated in international mouse resource networks such as the International Mouse Strain Resource, International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium, and Asian Mouse Mutagenesis and Resource Association to facilitate the worldwide use of high-quality mouse resources, and as a consequence it contributes to reproducible life science studies and innovation around the globe.

The International Journal of Tropical Insect Science (Int J Trop Insect Sci) is a peer-reviewed journal established in 1980 to promote insect science mainly in the tropics. This study aimed to provide a Bibliometric overview of Int J Trop Insect Sci publications and citations between 2012 and 2020, ending September 2020. A sample of 488 documents extracted from the Web of Science (WoS) was analysed using widely used bioclimatic indicators. The articles were written by 1726 authors. During this period, the most productive authors comprised S Roy, followed by S Ekesi, S Subramanian and M Tamo. The dominant keyword was ‘resistance’, followed by ‘Homoptera'. India took a leading position in Single Country Publications (SCP) while Kenya took the lead in Multiple Country Publications (MCP). Bibliometric analysis reveals vibrant collaboration between African and Western countries and active publication of multi-country authored articles. We conclude that there is an increasing trend for collaboration among different countries on the general topic of insect science. Research in insect science has the potential to impact both academic researchers and practitioners the knowledge use chain. This study will help researchers, journal editors, science policy makers managers, and others working in the biodiversity space and potential research gaps needing for further studies.

The University of Washington Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging provides leadership and resources to support the geroscience community locally, nationally, and internationally. Services are provided through our Resource Cores and funds are available annually to support pilot projects by external investigators. Aging-related studies involving proteomics, metabolomics, invertebrate model organisms, and bioinformatics/artificial intelligence are supported by our Cores. The UW Nathan Shock Center also serves as the administrative home for a Geropathology Research Resource. In addition, the Center works in conjunction with the University of Washington Healthy Aging and Longevity Research Institute to organize and support an annual Seminar Series in the Biology of Aging, an annual 1-day Geroscience Symposium, didactic training for the Biological Mechanisms of Healthy Aging Training Program, and other strategic initiatives. Our Center also supports the American Aging Association Annual Meeting, and we have recently partnered with the American Aging Association and the JAX Aging Center to create a set of video lectures on select topics in geroscience as part of the AGE Presents Video Lecture Series.

This paper reviews the standardization efforts of China’s news and publishing industries over the past three decades, and describes the progress and changes in these industries in standard formulation and revision, establishment of organizations for standardization, and contribution to international standardization.

An abundance of publications on medical professionalism have been published in recent years. Our study aimed to analyze the external characteristics of publications on professionalism using bibliometrics, to describe its current developments and trends, and to explore professionalism research hotspots using co-word analysis. We retrieved literature on professionalism published from 2010 to 2019 from the Web of Science database. Histcite and CiteSpace were used to analyze external characteristics of publications, including publication trends and distributions of publications by country/region, institution, author, and journal. Co-word analysis was conducted to analyze research hotspots, using the Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder and Graphical Clustering Toolkit. We constructed a strategic diagram to show the state of each research hotspot and the relationship between the various hotspots in this field. Results showed publications on professionalism increased in number year by year as a whole. The USA, including its institutions and authors, maintained the top position worldwide in terms of numbers of publications and citations. Among scholarly journals, Academic Medicine has published more articles and has had higher citations per paper than any other journal. Six research hotspots on professionalism were identified, visualized, and expounded. Of these, the theme of "measurement and evaluation of clinical competence" received the most attention in the field of professionalism. The reporting of quantifiable knowledge on the characteristics and research hotspots of publications could help inform gaps in the field of medical professionalism and provide evidence and guidance for future work for researchers, physicians, and educators. This study describes a method to detect hijacked journals based on the analysis of the archives of clone journals. This approach is most effective in discovering a network of hijacked journals that have the same organizer(s). Analysis of the archives of clone journals allowed to detect 62 URLs of hijacked journals. It also provided the possibility to predict two clone websites before they became operational. This study shows that most detected hijacked journals represent a network of clone journals organized by one or several fraudulent individuals. The information and content of nine legitimate journals were compromised in international and national scientometric databases., 31 pages, 2 figures, list of hijacked journals

The article is focused on the dynamics of publication activity of medical universities in Russian Federation over the period of 1996–2019. Based on the number of publications indexed in Scopus database, 28 institutions that have made significant contribution were selected for analysis. Overall, Russian medical universities have demonstrated rapid growth of publication activity over the recent years. Several typical growth patterns were identified, that are shared by the majority of institutions. These patterns were found to be independent of funding and number of staff, or geographic location, and most likely reflect the impact of individual institutional policy in the field of scientific research. Additionally, we investigated the structure of total scholarly output of each institution in terms of scientific fields, frequency of international collaborations, and publication language, all of which have demonstrated significant variability. The dynamics of citation was also analyzed. While medical universities in Russian Federation make advances in terms of publication activity, the citation profile is yet to improve.

Title of a research article is an abstract of the abstract. Titles play a decisive role in convincing readers at first sight whether articles are worth reading or not. Not only do research article titles show how carefully words are chosen by authors, but also reflect disciplinary differences in terms of title words and structure between hard sciences and soft sciences. This study examined the lexical density and syntactic structure of 690 research article titles chosen from five Library Science and Scientometrics journals, aiming to reveal disciplinary differences. The result suggested both Library Science and Scientometrics have almost the same title length and the prevalent usage of Nominal Phrase (NP) to govern the title structure. The result also stated some disciplinary differences: Library Science demonstrates more punctuation complexity, particularly a greater frequency in using colons; but Scientometrics shows more involvement of words related to research methods, which is an indicator to papers’ scientific value, and more usage of declarative Full Sentence (FS) structure, which were mostly discovered in the research articles in hard sciences.

During the previous Ebola and Zika outbreaks, researchers shared their data, allowing many published epidemiological studies to be produced only from open research data, to speed up investigations and control of these infections. This study aims to evaluate the dissemination of the COVID-19 research data underlying scientific publications. Analysis of COVID-19 publications from December 1, 2019, to April 30, 2020, was conducted through the PubMed Central repository to evaluate the research data available through its publication as supplementary material or deposited in repositories. The PubMed Central search generated 5,905 records, of which 804 papers included complementary research data, especially as supplementary material (77.4%). The most productive journals were The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet and The Lancet Infectious Diseases, the most frequent keyword was pneumonia, and the most used repositories were GitHub and GenBank. An expected growth in the number of published articles following the course of the pandemics is confirmed in this work, while the underlying research data are only 13.6%. It can be deduced that data sharing is not a common practice, even in health emergencies, such as the present one. High-impact generalist journals have accounted for a large share of global publishing. The topics most often covered are related to epidemiological and public health concepts, genetics, virology and respiratory diseases, such as pneumonia. The aging of the professoriate throughout the end of the twentieth century and the early years of the 2000′s (both before and after the end of mandatory retirement in the United States, ca. 1994) has become a source of concern for some scholars and research administrators, who posit that the “greying” of the academy results in lower research activity and a decline in scientific advancement. Some published opinions concur that senior scholars’ research programs do not keep pace with those of their younger colleagues, but little quantitative evidence has been presented to evaluate that claim. In this study, we quantify senior faculty publication activity in six broad fields, comparing their publication rates to their younger colleagues across four modes of knowledge dissemination: journal articles, conference proceedings, books, and book chapters. Career publication activity does not follow the “peak and decline” pattern described in earlier studies. In most fields, journal article publication rates do not decline substantively with age (and in some cases article publication rates are higher among senior scholars), conference proceeding publication rates tend to decline with age, while book and chapter publication rates increase markedly with age. Overall, senior scholars maintain publishing activity levels and tend to shift their focus to the development and evolution of ideas through the publication of longer-format works as books and book chapters.

As one of the twelve Councilors, it is my pleasure to provide a short biographical sketch for the readers of Biophys. Rev. and for the members of the Biophysical Societies. I have been a member of the council in the former election period. Moreover, I served since decades in the German Biophysical Society (DGfB) as board member, secretary, vice president, and president. I hold a diploma degree in chemistry as well as PhD from the University of Göttingen. The experimental work for both qualifications has been performed at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen under the guidance of Erich Sackmann and the late Herman Träuble. When E. Sackmann moved to the University of Ulm, I joined his group as a research assistant performing my independent research on structure and dynamics of biological and artificial membranes and qualified for the “habilitation” thesis in Biophysical Chemistry. I have spent a research year at Stanford University supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and after coming back to Germany, I was appointed as a Heisenberg Fellow by the DFG and became Professor in Biophysical Chemistry in the Chemistry Department of the University of Darmstadt. Since 1990, I spent my career at the Institute for Biochemistry of the University of Muenster as full Professor and Director of the institute. I have trained numerous undergraduate, 150 graduate, and postdoctoral students from chemistry, physics, and also pharmacy as well as biology resulting in more than 350 published papers including reviews and book articles in excellent collaboration with colleagues from different academic disciplines in our university and also internationally, e.g., as a guest professor at the Chemistry Department of the Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing.

Jennifer Leigh and Jennifer Hiscock, both from the University of Kent, UK, share with Nature Chemistry the origins of the Women In Supramolecular Chemistry (WISC) network, as well as some of the projects underway to try to help change the culture of this area of chemistry from the bottom up.

The University of Washington Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Biology of Aging in conjunction with the Healthy Aging and Longevity Research Institute held its annual geroscience symposium virtually on October 23, 2020. The symposium was divided into three sessions: (I) organ aging and growth signaling, (II) neurodegeneration and metabolism, and (III) innovative approaches in geroscience and aging research. Nine speakers affiliated with the University of Washington and three invited guest speakers, predominantly trainee, and junior faculty presented their research. Here, we summarize research presented during the symposium. A geroscience special issue, of which this is a part, collects submissions from symposium presenters as well as trainees supported by the Biological Mechanisms of Healthy Aging training program.

Many papers in economics that are published in peer reviewed journals are initially released in widely circulated working paper series. This raises the question about the benefit of publishing in a peer-reviewed journal in terms of citations. Specifically, we address the question: to what extent does the stamp of approval obtained by publishing in a peer-reviewed journal lead to more subsequent citations for papers that are already available in working paper series? Our data set comprises about 28,000 working papers from four major working paper series in economics. Using panel data methods, we show that the publication in a peer reviewed journal results in around twice the number of yearly citations relative to working papers that never get published in a journal. Our results hold in several robustness checks.

We present results of a large-scale study of potentially predatory journals (PPJ) represented in the Scopus database, which is widely used for research evaluation. Both journal metrics and country/disciplinary data have been evaluated for different groups of PPJ: those listed by Jeffrey Beall and those discontinued by Scopus because of “publication concerns”. Our results show that even after years of discontinuing, hundreds of active potentially predatory journals are still highly visible in the Scopus database. PPJ papers are continuously produced by all major countries, but with different prevalence. Most all science journal classification subject areas are affected. The largest number of PPJ papers are in engineering and medicine. On average, PPJ have much lower citation metrics than other Scopus-indexed journals. We conclude with a survey of the case of Russia and Kazakhstan where the share of PPJ papers in 2016 amounted to almost a half of all Kazakhstan papers in Scopus. Our data suggest a relation between PPJ prevalence and national research evaluation policies. As such policies become more widespread, the expansion of potentially predatory journal research will be increasingly important.

The study investigated the awareness and use of open access (OA) channels for scholarly publishing by researchers at selected universities in Kenya. A sample of 341 faculty members, from three public universities, was selected for the study. A questionnaire was used as the main data collection instrument. The findings revealed that there is a considerably high level of awareness among the researchers; librarians were the main channel with regard to creating awareness; the OA channels that are more frequently used by researchers are OA journals, OA institutional repositories and OA e-books; the researchers mostly published/disseminated theses and dissertations, conference proceedings and workshop/seminar presentations through OA channels; and searching and accessing research articles, developing research proposals and formulating research problems were among the main reasons why researchers used open access channels. There are several reasons why researchers sometimes do not use OA channels for research. The study makes several recommendations for the adoption and effective use of OA channels in the selected universities and beyond.
