In their remarkable paper, Minakshisundaram and Pleijel established by using the parametrix for the heat equation the asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel on compact Riemannian manifolds. The result has since been extensively used in the spectral analysis of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, and in particular, in proving Weyl’s law for the asymptotic distribution of eigenvalues and various direct and inverse problems in spectral geometry. However, the question of describing the explicit values of the corresponding heat trace coefficients associated with an arbitrary compact Riemannian manifold has remained an interesting task. In this paper, we review results on Minakshisundaram-Pleijel coefficients associated with the Laplacian on spheres $${\mathbb {S}}^{N}$$ ( $$N\ge 1$$ ) and other associated spectral invariants, namely, the Minakshisundaram-Pleijel zeta functions & their residues, and the zeta-regularised determinants of the Laplacian on spheres. The results reviewed deal mainly with closed-form formulae for the afore-mentioned spectral invariants and the explicit values of the first few of these spectral invariants are given.

International audience; Sampled-data control systems have steadily been gaining interest for their applications in automatic engineering where they are implemented as digital controllers and recently results have been obtained in optimal control theory for nonlinear sampled-data control systems and certain generalizations. In this paper we derive a Pontryagin maximum principle for general nonlinear finite-dimensional optimal sampled-data control problems with running inequality state constraints. In particular, we obtain a nonpositive averaged Hamiltonian gradient condition with the adjoint vector being a function of bounded variations. Our proof is based on the Ekeland variational principle. In general, optimal control problems with running inequality state constraints are difficult to solve using numerical methods due to the discontinuities (the jumps and the singular part) of the adjoint vector. However in our case we find that under certain general hypotheses the adjoint vector only experiences jumps at most at the sampling times and moreover the trajectory only contacts the running inequality state constraints at most at the sampling times. We call this behavior a bouncing trajectory phenomenon and it constitutes the second major focus of this paper. Finally taking advantage of the bouncing trajectory phenomenon we numerically solve three examples with different kinds of constraints and in several dimensions.

The result presented in this paper generalizes the result in Szulkin and Weth (J Funct Anal 257(12):3802–3822, 2009).

We show that the phase tropical pair-of-pants is (ambient) isotopic to the complex pair-of-pants. This paper can serve as an addendum to the author's joint paper with Ruddat arXiv:2001.08267 where an isotopy between complex and ober-tropical pairs-of-pants was shown. Special units are a sort of predecessor of Euler systems, and they are mainly used to obtain annihilators for class groups. So one is interested in finding as many special units as possible (actually we use a technical generalization called “semispecial”). In this paper we show that in any abelian field having a real genus field in the narrow sense all Washington units are semispecial, and that a slightly weaker statement holds true for all abelian fields. The group of Washington units is very often larger than Sinnott’s group of cyclotomic units. In a companion paper we will show that in concrete families of abelian fields the group of Washington units is much larger than that of Sinnott units, by giving lower bounds on the index. Combining this with the present paper gives strong annihilation results.

In this paper, we provide the boundedness property of the Riesz transforms associated to the Schrodinger operator $${\cal L} = \Delta + {\bf{V}}$$ in a new weighted Morrey space which is the generalized version of many previous Morrey type spaces. The additional potential V considered in this paper is a non-negative function satisfying the suitable reverse Holder’s inequality. Our results are new and general in many cases of problems. As an application of the boundedness property of these singular integral operators, we obtain some regularity results of solutions to Schrodinger equations in the new Morrey space.

Geometric methods are important for researching the differential properties of metric projectors, sensitivity analysis, and the augmented Lagrangian algorithm. Sun [3] researched the relationship among the strong second-order sufficient condition, constraint nondegeneracy, B-subdifferential nonsingularity of the KKT system, and the strong regularity of KKT points in investigating nonlinear semidefinite programming problems. Geometric properties of cones are necessary in studying second-order sufficient condition and constraint nondegeneracy. In this paper, we study the geometric properties of a class of nonsymmetric cones, which is widely applied in optimization problems subjected to the epigraph of vector k-norm functions and low-rank-matrix approximations. We compute the polar, the tangent cone, the linear space of the tangent cone, the critical cone, and the affine hull of this critical cone. This paper will support future research into the sensitivity and algorithms of related optimization problems.

In the present paper, we obtain a Halanay inequality on time scales with unbounded coefficient for a dynamic problem, which extends a result of Wen et al. (J. Math. Anal. Appl., 347 (2008), 169–178.) to the inequality of integral type on time scales. Moreover, we list two dynamic problems to which the Halanay inequality obtained above can be applied and prove the zero solution of two delay dynamic problems are asymptotically stable. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that the Halanay inequality obtained in the present paper is more precise than the results in [3, 14, 17].

In the present paper we study the so-called sampling Kantorovich operators in the very general setting of modular spaces. Here, modular convergence theorems are proved under suitable assumptions, together with a modular inequality for the above operators. Further, we study applications of such approximation results in several concrete cases, such as Musielak–Orlicz and Orlicz spaces. As a consequence of these results we obtain convergence theorems in the classical and weighted versions of the $$L^p$$ L p and Zygmund (or interpolation) spaces. At the end of the paper examples of kernels for the above operators are presented.

The aim of the present paper is to establish four theorems connecting Stieltjes transform and Hankel transform. By applications of the theorems established in this paper four new integral formulae involving special functions are obtained. Due to the general nature of the theorems established in this paper, several other integrals involving special functions may be evaluated.

Let $G$ be a finite $2$-generated non-cyclic group. The spread of $G$ is the largest integer $k$ such that for any nontrivial elements $x_1, \ldots, x_k$, there exists $y \in G$ such that $G = \langle x_i, y\rangle$ for all $i$. The more restrictive notion of uniform spread, denoted $u(G)$, requires $y$ to be chosen from a fixed conjugacy class of $G$, and a theorem of Breuer, Guralnick and Kantor states that $u(G) \geqslant 2$ for every non-abelian finite simple group $G$. For any group with $u(G) \geqslant 1$, we define the uniform domination number $\gamma_u(G)$ of $G$ to be the minimal size of a subset $S$ of conjugate elements such that for each nontrivial $x \in G$ there exists $y \in S$ with $G = \langle x, y \rangle$ (in this situation, we say that $S$ is a uniform dominating set for $G$). We introduced the latter notion in a recent paper, where we used probabilistic methods to determine close to best possible bounds on $\gamma_u(G)$ for all simple groups $G$. In this paper we establish several new results on the spread, uniform spread and uniform domination number of finite groups and finite simple groups. For example, we make substantial progress towards a classification of the simple groups $G$ with $\gamma_u(G)=2$, and we study the associated probability that two randomly chosen conjugate elements form a uniform dominating set for $G$. In this paper, we study noncommutative surface singularities arising from orders. The singularities we study are mild in the sense that they have finite representation type or, equivalently, are log terminal in the sense of the Mori minimal model program for orders (Chan and Ingalls in Invent Math 161(2):427–452, 2005). These were classified independently by Artin (in terms of ramification data) and Reiten–Van den Bergh (in terms of their AR-quivers). The first main goal of this paper is to connect these two classifications, by going through the finite subgroups $$G \subset {{{\,\mathrm{GL}\,}}_2}$$ , explicitly computing $$H^2(G,k^*)$$ , and then matching these up with Artin’s list of ramification data and Reiten–Van den Bergh’s AR-quivers. This provides a semi-independent proof of their classifications and extends the study of canonical orders in Chan et al. (Proc Lond Math Soc (3) 98(1):83–115, 2009) to the case of log terminal orders. A secondary goal of this paper is to study noncommutative analogues of plane curves which arise as follows. Let $$B = k_{\zeta } \llbracket x,y \rrbracket $$ be the skew power series ring where $$\zeta $$ is a root of unity, or more generally a terminal order over a complete local ring. We consider rings of the form $$A = B/(f)$$ where $$f \in Z(B)$$ which we interpret to be the ring of functions on a noncommutative plane curve. We classify those noncommutative plane curves which are of finite representation type and compute their AR-quivers.

In this paper, we consider the steady incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in a smooth bounded domain $$\Omega \subset \mathbb R^n$$ Ω ⊂ R n with the dimension $$n\ge 3$$ n ≥ 3 . We first establish asymptotic expansion formulae of Sobolev regular finite energy solutions in $$\Omega$$ Ω . In the second part of this paper, explicit representation formulae of Sobolev regular solutions are showed in the regular polyhedron $$\Omega :=[0,T]^n$$ Ω : = [ 0 , T ] n .

Using the hyper-exponential recurrence criterion, a large deviation principle for the occupation measure is derived for a class of non-linear monotone stochastic partial differential equations. The main results are applied to many concrete SPDEs such as stochastic $p$-Laplace equation, stochastic porous medium equation, stochastic fast-diffusion equation, and even stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by $\alpha$-stable noises., Comment: This paper generalizes the idea in our NOT published paper arXiv:1510.03522. Major advances were recently obtained in the exact solution of vehicle routing problems (VRPs). Sophisticated branch-cut-and-price (BCP) algorithms for some of the most classical VRP variants now solve many instances with up to a few hundreds of customers. However, adapting and reimplementing those successful algorithms for other variants can be a very demanding task. This work proposes a BCP solver for a generic model that encompasses a wide class of VRPs. It incorporates the key elements found in the best existing VRP algorithms: ng-path relaxation, rank-1 cuts with limited memory, path enumeration, and rounded capacity cuts; all generalized through the new concepts of “packing set” and “elementarity set”. The concepts are also used to derive a branching rule based on accumulated resource consumption and to generalize the Ryan and Foster branching rule. Extensive experiments on several variants show that the generic solver has an excellent overall performance, in many problems being better than the best specific algorithms. Even some non-VRPs, like bin packing, vector packing and generalized assignment, can be modeled and effectively solved.

In this paper, we revisit the performance of theα-synchronizer in distributed systems with probabilistic message loss as introduced in Függer et al. [Perf. Eval. 93(2015)]. In sharp contrast to the infinite-state Markov chain resp. the exponential-size finite-state upper bound presented in the original paper, we introduce a polynomial-size finite-state Markov chain for a new synchronizer variant$\alpha ^{\prime }$α′, which provides a new upper bound on the performance of theα-synchronizer. Both analytic and simulation results show that our new upper bound is strictly better than the existing one. Moreover, we show that a modified version of the$\alpha ^{\prime }$α′-synchronizer provides a lower bound on the performance of theα-synchronizer. By means of elaborate simulation results, we show that our new lower bound is also strictly better than the lower bound presented in the original paper.

An open problem proposed by Rhoades is the following. Is there a contractive condition which guarantees the existence of a fixed point, but does not require the mapping to be continuous at the point? In this paper, we generalize a celebrated result of Eshaghi et al., [On orthogonal sets and Banach fixed point theorem, Fixed Point Theory, 18 (2017), 569–578], which allows us to find a new solution to this open problem. Furthermore we show that a claim of the aforementioned paper, that Banach’s fixed point theorem cannot be applied in their application, is incorrect. Finally, as an application, we prove that a multivalued function satisfying a general linear functional inclusion admits a unique selection fulfilling the corresponding functional equation.

Let X and Y be two Banach spaces. A bounded operator $$T: X \longrightarrow Y$$ is said to be a BS-compact operator whenever T sends Banach-Saks subsets of X onto norm compact sets of Y. In this paper, our central focus is upon introducing the class of almost BS-compact operators. The paper rests essentially on two parts. The first is devoted to the connection of this new class of operators with classical notions of operators, such as BS-compact operators, AM-compact operators, and Dunfort-Pettis operators. The second part is dedicated to the domination problem within the framework of (almost) BS-compact operators.

In this paper, we extend the Koornwinder method to the case when one of the univariate families is orthogonal with respect to a Sobolev inner product. Therefore, we study the new Sobolev bivariate families obtaining relations between the classical original Koornwinder polynomials and the Sobolev one, deducing recursive methods in order to compute the coefficients. The case when one of the univariate families is classical is analysed. Consider an elliptic quadric $$Q^-(3,q)$$ in $$\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$$ . Let $$\mathcal {E}$$ and $$\mathcal {T}$$ denote the set of all lines of $$\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$$ which meet $$Q^-(3,q)$$ in 0 and 1 point, respectively. In this paper, we characterize the minimum size $$(\mathcal {T}\cup \mathcal {E})$$ -blocking sets and give a different proof for the characterization of minimum size $$\mathcal {E}$$ -blocking sets in $$\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$$ which works for all q. We also discuss whether the main results of this paper (Theorems 1.6 and 1.7) can be extended to ovoids in $$\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$$ .

Recently, the authors have established $$L^p$$ -boundedness of vector-valued q-variational inequalities for averaging operators which take values in the Banach space satisfying the martingale cotype q property in Hong and Ma (Math Z 286(1–2):89–120, 2017). In this paper, we prove that the martingale cotype q property is also necessary for the vector-valued q-variational inequalities, which was a question left open in the previous paper. Moreover, we also prove that the UMD property and the martingale cotype q property can be characterized in terms of vector valued q-variational inequalities for the Hilbert transform.

This paper is a follow up of [6]. We investigate the boundedness of the bilinear fractional integral operator introduced by Grafakos in [3]. When the local integrability index $s$ falls 1 with weights and $t$ exceeds 1, He and Yan obtained some results on this operator was worked on Morrey spaces earlier in [7]. In a previous paper by the author, a family of iterations for computing the matrix square root was constructed by exploiting a recursion obeyed by Zolotarev’s rational minimax approximants of the function $$z^{1/2}$$. The present paper generalizes this construction by deriving rational minimax iterations for the matrix pth root, where $$p \ge 2$$ is an integer. The analysis of these iterations is considerably different from the case $$p=2$$, owing to the fact that when $$p>2$$, rational minimax approximants of the function $$z^{1/p}$$ do not obey a recursion. Nevertheless, we show that several of the salient features of the Zolotarev iterations for the matrix square root, including equioscillatory error, order of convergence, and stability, carry over to the case $$p>2$$. A key role in the analysis is played by the asymptotic behavior of rational minimax approximants on short intervals. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the predictions of the theory.

Given a graph $G$ and a nondecreasing sequence $S=(s_1,\ldots,s_k)$ of positive integers, the mapping $c:V(G)\longrightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$ is called an $S$-packing coloring of $G$ if for any two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ in $c^{-1}(i)$, the distance between $x$ and $y$ is greater than $s_i$. The smallest integer $k$ such that there exists a $(1,2,\ldots,k)$-packing coloring of a graph $G$ is called the packing chromatic number of $G$, denoted $\chi_{\rho}(G)$. The question of boundedness of the packing chromatic number in the class of subcubic (planar) graphs was investigated in several earlier papers; recently it was established that the invariant is unbounded in the class of all subcubic graphs. In this paper, we prove that the packing chromatic number of any 2-connected bipartite subcubic outerplanar graph is bounded by $7$. Furthermore, we prove that every subcubic triangle-free outerplanar graph has a $(1,2,2,2)$-packing coloring, and that there exists a subcubic outerplanar graph with a triangle that does not admit a $(1,2,2,2)$-packing coloring. In addition, there exists a subcubic triangle-free outerplanar graph that does not admit a $(1,2,2,3)$-packing coloring. A similar dichotomy is shown for bipartite outerplanar graphs: every such graph admits an $S$-packing coloring for $S=(1,3,\ldots,3)$, where $3$ appears $\Delta$ times ($\Delta$ being the maximum degree of vertices), and this property does not hold if one of the integers $3$ is replaced by $4$ in the sequence $S$., Comment: 24 pages

This paper contains two parts toward studying abelian varieties from the classification point of view. In a series of papers, the current authors and T.-C. Yang obtain explicit formulas for the numbers of superspecial abelian surfaces over finite fields. In this paper, we give an explicit formula for the size of the isogeny class of simple abelian surfaces with real Weil number $\sqrt{q}$. This establishes a key step that one may extend our previous explicit calculations of superspecial abelian surfaces to those of supersingular abelian surfaces.The second part is to introduce the notion of genera and ideal complexes of abelian varieties with additional structures in a general setting. The purpose is to generalize the results of Yu on abelian varieties with additional structures to similitude classes, which establishes more results on the connection between geometrically defined and arithmetically defined masses for further investigation., Comment: 23 pages. In the study of the constant in Ahlfors' second fundamental theorem involving a set E_{q} of q points, branch values of covering surfaces outside E_{q} bring a lot of troubles. To avoid this situation, for a given surface S, it is useful to construct a new surface So such that L(So) =H(S), and all branch values of So are contained in E_{q}. Insolvency risk measures play important role in the theory and practice of risk management. In this paper, we provide a numerical procedure to compute vectors of their exact values and prove for them new upper and/or lower bounds which are shown to be attainable. More precisely, we investigate a general insolvency risk measure for a regime-switching Sparre Andersen model in which the distributions of claims and/or wait times are driven by a Markov chain. The measure is defined as an arbitrary increasing function of the conditional expected harm of the deficit at ruin, given the initial state of the Markov chain. A vector-valued operator L, generated by the regime-switching process, is introduced and investigated. We show a close connection between the iterations of L and the risk measure in a finite horizon. The approach assumed in the paper enables to treat in a unified way several discrete and continuous time risk models as well as a variety of important vector-valued insolvency risk measures.

In this paper we consider a link $$B_{n,\rho }$$Bn,ρ between Baskakov type operators $$B_{n,\infty }$$Bn,∞ and genuine Baskakov–Durrmeyer type operators $$ B_{n,1}$$Bn,1 depending on a positive real parameter $$\rho $$ρ. The topic of the present paper is the pointwise limit relation $$\left( B_{n,\rho }f\right) \left( x\right) \rightarrow \left( B_{n,\infty }f\right) \left( x\right) $$Bn,ρfx→Bn,∞fx as $$\rho \rightarrow \infty $$ρ→∞ for $$x\ge 0.$$x≥0. As a main result we derive uniform convergence on each compact subinterval of the positive real axis for all continuous functions f of polynomial growth.

In this paper, we introduce the associated geodesic-Einstein flow for a relative ample line bundle L over the total space $$\mathcal {X}$$ of a holomorphic fibration and obtain a few properties of that flow. In particular, we prove that the pair $$(\mathcal {X}, L)$$ is nonlinear semistable if the associated Donaldson type functional is bounded from below and the geodesic-Einstein flow has long-time existence property. We also define the associated S-classes and C-classes for $$(\mathcal {X}, L)$$ and obtain two inequalities between them when L admits a geodesic-Einstein metric. Finally, in the appendix of this paper, we prove that a relative ample line bundle is geodesic-Einstein if and only if an associated infinite rank bundle is Hermitian–Einstein.

This paper studies the asymptotic behavior of the exact constants of the Nikolskii inequalities for the space $$\Pi _n^d$$ of spherical polynomials of degree at most n on the unit sphere $$\mathbb{S}{^d} \subset {^{d + 1}}$$ as n → ∞. A graph Γ is called a bi-circulant if it admits a cyclic group as a group of automorphisms acting semiregularly on the vertices of Γ with two orbits. The characterization of tetravalent edgetransitive bi-circulants was given in several recent papers. In this paper, a classification is given of connected tetravalent vertex-transitive bi-circulants of order twice an odd integer.

The main motive of the paper is to look on rectifying and osculating curves on a smooth surface. In this paper we find the normal and geodesic curvature for a rectifying curve on a smooth surface and we also prove that geodesic curvature is invariant under the isometry of surfaces such that rectifying curves remain. We find a sufficient condition for which an osculating curve on a smooth surface remains invariant under isometry of surfaces and also we prove that the component of the position vector of an osculating curve α(s) on a smooth surface along any tangent vector to the surface at α(s) is invariant under such isometry.

This is a follow-up of the paper J. Fernandez-Bonder, A. Ritorto and A. Salort, H-convergence result for nonlocal elliptic-type problems via Tartar’s method, SIAM J. Math. Anal., 49 (2017), pp. 2387–2408, where the classical concept of H-convergence was extended to fractional $$p$$ -Laplace type operators. In this short paper we provide an explicit characterization of this notion by demonstrating that the weak- $$*$$ convergence of the coefficients is an equivalent condition for H-convergence of the sequence of nonlocal operators. This result takes advantage of nonlocality and is in stark contrast to the local $$p$$ -Laplacian case.

T. Ikeda and H. Katsurada have developed the theory of the Gross-Keating invariant of a quadratic form in their recent papers [IK1] and [IK2]. In particular, they prove that the local factor of the Fourier coefficients of the Siegel-Eisenstein series is completely determined by the Gross-Keating invariant with extra datum, called the extended GK datum, in [IK2]. On the other hand, such local factor is a special case of the local densities for a pair of two quadratic forms. Thus we propose a general question if the local density can be determined by certain series of the Gross-Keating invariants and the extended GK datums. In this paper, we prove that the answer to this question is affirmative, for the local density of a single quadratic form defined over an unramified finite extension of $\mathbb{Z}_2$. In the appendix, T. Ikeda and H. Katsurada compute the local density formula of a single binary quadratic form defined over any finite extension of $\mathbb{Z}_2$., 32 pages

A graph G(V, E) is claw-free if no vertex has three pairwise non-adjacent neighbours. The maximum weight stable set (MWSS) problem in a claw-free graph is a natural generalization of the matching problem and has been shown to be polynomially solvable by Minty and Sbihi in 1980. In a remarkable paper, Faenza, Oriolo and Stauffer have shown that, in a two-step procedure, a claw-free graph can be first turned into a quasi-line graph by removing strips containing all the irregular nodes and then decomposed into {claw, net}-free strips and strips with stability number at most three. Through this decomposition, the MWSS problem can be solved in $$\mathcal{O}(|V|(|V| \log |V| + |E|))$$ time. In this paper, we describe a direct decomposition of a claw-free graph into {claw, net}-free strips and strips with stability number at most three which can be performed in $$\mathcal{O}(|V|^2)$$ time. In two companion papers we showed that the MWSS problem can be solved in $$\mathcal{O}(|E| \log |V|)$$ time in claw-free graphs with $$\alpha (G) \le 3$$ and in $$\mathcal{O}(|V| \sqrt{|E|})$$ time in {claw, net}-free graphs with $$\alpha (G) \ge 4$$ . These results prove that the MWSS problem in a claw-free graph can be solved in $$\mathcal{O}(|V|^2 \log |V|)$$ time, the same complexity of the best and long standing algorithm for the MWSS problem in line graphs.

Our arguments in §6 of the paper [3] contain an error. In this note we explain the error and how to fix it. We are grateful to Florent Ygouf for both pointing out the mistake, and for indicating the correct argument included below. All of the results stated in the introduction of the paper remain valid, as a consequence of the amended argument which will be given below. In the recent preprint [4], Ygouf proves related results about existence of dense rel leaves in other loci.

A great number of theoretical results are known about log Gromov-Witten invariants, but few calculations are worked out. In this paper we restrict to surfaces and to genus 0 stable log maps of maximal tangency. We ask how various natural components of the moduli space contribute to the log Gromov-Witten invariants. The first such calculation by Gross-Pandharipande-Siebert deals with multiple covers over rigid curves in the log Calabi-Yau setting. As a natural continuation, in this paper we compute the contributions of non-rigid irreducible curves in the log Calabi-Yau setting and that of the union of two rigid curves in general position. For the former, we construct and study a moduli space of "logarithmic" 1-dimensional sheaves and compare the resulting multiplicity with tropical multiplicity. For the latter, we explicitly describe the components of the moduli space and work out the logarithmic deformation theory in full, which we then compare with the deformation theory of the analogous relative stable maps., Comment: Added two example sections including a comparison with tropical multiplicity. 53 pages, 4 figures

In this paper, we will establish a formula that relates the product $$\prod _{\omega ^n=1} {\omega x-1 \atopwithdelims ()p-1}$$ to generalized and homogeneous multiple harmonic sums, this would allow us to derive new identities and congruences. The congruences considered in this paper are congruences in $$\mathbb {C}_p$$ which are also valid in $$\mathbb {Z}_p$$ and $$\mathbb {Z}$$ . In order to prove these congruences, we employ well-known theorems for symmetric functions and harmonic numbers.

The standard $L$-functions of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}$ expressed in terms of the Friedberg-Jacquet global zeta integrals have better structure for arithmetic applications, due to the relation of the linear periods with the modular symbols. The most technical obstacles towards such arithmetic applications are (1) non-vanishing of modular symbols at infinity and (2) the existance or construction of uniform cohomological test vectors. Problem (1) is also called the non-vanishing hypothesis at infinity, which was proved by Binyong Sun, by establishing the existence of certain cohomological test vectors. In this paper, we explicitly construct an archimedean local integral that produces a new type of a twisted linear functional $\Lambda_{s,\chi}$, which, when evaluated with our explicitly constructed cohomological vector, is equal to the local twisted standard $L$-function $L(s,\pi\otimes\chi)$ as a meromorphic function of $s\in \mathbb{C}$. With the relations between linear models and Shalika models, we establish (1) with an explicitly constructed cohomological vector, and hence recovers a non-vanishing result of Binyong Sun via a completely different method. Our main result indicates a complete solution to (2), which will be presented in a paper of Dihua Jiang, Binyong Sun and Fangyang Tian with full details and with applications to the global period relations for the twisted standard $L$-functions at critical places., Comment: 39 pages. In this paper we provide some quantitative mixed weak-type estimates assuming conditions that imply that $$uv\in A_{\infty }$$ for Calderon–Zygmund operators, rough singular integrals and commutators. The main novelty of this paper lies in the fact that we rely upon sparse domination results, pushing an approach to endpoint estimates that was introduced in Domingo-Salazar et al. (Bull Lond Math Soc 48(1):63–73, 2016) and extended in Lerner et al. (Adv Math 319:153–181, 2017) and Li et al. (J Geom Anal, 2018).

In the direction towards the question when mixed multiplicities are equal to the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of joint reductions, this paper not only generalizes [28, Theorem 3.1] that covers the Rees's theorem [13, Theorem 2.4], but also removes the hypothesis that joint reductions are systems of parameters in [28, Theorem 3.1]. The results of the paper seem to make the problem of expressing mixed multiplicities into the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of joint reductions become closer., 15 pages

Associated to a presentable $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$ and an object $X \in \mathcal{C}$ is the tangent $\infty$-category $\mathcal{T}_X\mathcal{C}$, consisting of parameterized spectrum objects over $X$. This gives rise to a cohomology theory, called Quillen cohomology, whose category of coefficients is $\mathcal{T}_X\mathcal{C}$. When $\mathcal{C}$ consists of algebras over a nice $\infty$-operad in a stable $\infty$-category, $\mathcal{T}_X\mathcal{C}$ is equivalent to the $\infty$-category of operadic modules, by work of Basterra--Mandell, Schwede and Lurie. In this paper we develop the model-categorical counterpart of this identification and extend it to the case of algebras over an enriched operad, taking values in a model category which is not necessarily stable. This extended comparison can be used, for example, to identify the cotangent complex of enriched categories, an application we take up in a subsequent paper., Comment: The section concerning stabilization of model categories was separated into an independent paper, appearing now as arXiv:1802.08031

The basic aim of this paper is to provide a fundamental tool, the resolvent decomposition theorem, in the construction theory of denumerable Markov processes. We present a detailed analytic proof of this extremely useful tool and explain its clear probabilistic interpretation. We then apply this tool to investigate the basic problems of existence and uniqueness criteria for denumerable Markov processes with instantaneous states to which few results have been obtained even until now. Although the complete answers regarding these existence and uniqueness criteria will be given in a subsequent paper, we shall, in this paper, present part solutions of these very important problems that are closely linked with the subtle Williams S and N conditions.

We prove a new effective Chebotarev density theorem for Galois extensions $L/\mathbb{Q}$ that allows one to count small primes (even as small as an arbitrarily small power of the discriminant of $L$); this theorem holds for the Galois closures of "almost all" number fields that lie in an appropriate family of field extensions. Previously, applying Chebotarev in such small ranges required assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. The error term in this new Chebotarev density theorem also avoids the effect of an exceptional zero of the Dedekind zeta function of $L$, without assuming GRH. We give many different "appropriate families," including families of arbitrarily large degree. To do this, we first prove a new effective Chebotarev density theorem that requires a zero-free region of the Dedekind zeta function. Then we prove that almost all number fields in our families yield such a zero-free region. The innovation that allows us to achieve this is a delicate new method for controlling zeroes of certain families of non-cuspidal $L$-functions. This builds on, and greatly generalizes the applicability of, work of Kowalski and Michel on the average density of zeroes of a family of cuspidal $L$-functions. A surprising feature of this new method, which we expect will have independent interest, is that we control the number of zeroes in the family of $L$-functions by bounding the number of certain associated fields with fixed discriminant. As an application of the new Chebotarev density theorem, we prove the first nontrivial upper bounds for $\ell$-torsion in class groups, for all integers $\ell \geq 1$, applicable to infinite families of fields of arbitrarily large degree., Comment: 52 pages. The paper studies the connectivity properties of facet graphs of simplicial complexes of combinatorial interest. In particular, it is shown that the facet graphs of d-cycles, d-hypertrees and d-hypercuts are, respectively, (d +1)-, d-and (n − d − 1)-vertex-connected. It is also shown that the facet graph of a d-cycle cannot be split into more than s connected components by removing at most s vertices. In addition, the paper discusses various related issues, as well as an extension to cell-complexes.

International audience; This article is the continuation of our first work on the determination of the cases where there is equality in Courant's Nodal Domain theorem in the case of a Robin boundary condition (with Robin parameter h). For the square, our first paper focused on the case where h is large and extended results that were obtained by Pleijel, Bérard-Helffer, for the problem with a Dirichlet boundary condition. There, we also obtained some general results about the behaviour of the nodal structure (for planar domains) under a small deformation of h, where h is positive and not close to 0. In this second paper, we extend results that were obtained by Helffer-Persson-Sundqvist for the Neumann problem to the case where h > 0 is small. MSC classification (2010): 35P99, 58J50, 58J37.

In this paper we study nonconvex and nonsmooth multi-block optimization over Euclidean embedded (smooth) Riemannian submanifolds with coupled linear constraints. Such optimization problems naturally arise from machine learning, statistical learning, compressive sensing, image processing, and tensor PCA, among others. By utilizing the embedding structure, we develop an ADMM-like primal-dual approach based on decoupled solvable subroutines such as linearized proximal mappings, where the duality is with respect to the embedded Euclidean spaces. First, we introduce the optimality conditions for the afore-mentioned optimization models. Then, the notion of $$\epsilon $$ -stationary solutions is introduced as a result. The main part of the paper is to show that the proposed algorithms possess an iteration complexity of $$O(1/\epsilon ^2)$$ to reach an $$\epsilon $$ -stationary solution. For prohibitively large-size tensor or machine learning models, we present a sampling-based stochastic algorithm with the same iteration complexity bound in expectation. In case the subproblems are not analytically solvable, a feasible curvilinear line-search variant of the algorithm based on retraction operators is proposed. Finally, we show specifically how the algorithms can be implemented to solve a variety of practical problems such as the NP-hard maximum bisection problem, the $$\ell _q$$ regularized sparse tensor principal component analysis and the community detection problem. Our preliminary numerical results show great potentials of the proposed methods.

Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) and the Brownian map (TBM) are two distinct models of measure-endowed random surfaces. LQG is defined in terms of a real parameter $$\gamma $$, and it has long been believed that when $$\gamma = \sqrt{8/3}$$, the LQG sphere should be equivalent (in some sense) to TBM. However, the LQG sphere comes equipped with a conformal structure, and TBM comes equipped with a metric space structure, and endowing either one with the other’s structure has been an open problem for some time. This paper is the first in a three-part series that unifies LQG and TBM by endowing each object with the other’s structure and showing that the resulting laws agree. The present work considers a growth process called quantum Loewner evolution (QLE) on a $$\sqrt{8/3}$$-LQG surface $${\mathcal {S}}$$ and defines $$d_{{\mathcal {Q}}}(x,y)$$ to be the amount of time it takes QLE to grow from $$x \in {\mathcal {S}}$$ to $$y \in {\mathcal {S}}$$. We show that $$d_{{\mathcal {Q}}}(x,y)$$ is a.s. determined by the triple $$({\mathcal {S}},x,y)$$ (which is far from clear from the definition of QLE) and that $$d_{{\mathcal {Q}}}$$ a.s. satisfies symmetry (i.e., $$d_{{\mathcal {Q}}}(x,y) = d_{{\mathcal {Q}}}(y,x)$$) for a.a. (x, y) pairs and the triangle inequality for a.a. triples. This implies that $$d_{{\mathcal {Q}}}$$ is a.s. a metric on any countable sequence sampled i.i.d. from the area measure on $${\mathcal {S}}$$. We establish several facts about the law of this metric, which are in agreement with similar facts known for TBM. The subsequent papers will show that this metric a.s. extends uniquely and continuously to the entire $$\sqrt{8/3}$$-LQG surface and that the resulting measure-endowed metric space is TBM.

This paper addresses the problem of comparing minimal free resolutions of symbolic powers of an ideal. Our investigation is focused on the behavior of the function $${{\,\mathrm{depth}\,}}R/I^{(t)} = \dim R -{{\,\mathrm{pd}\,}}I^{(t)} - 1$$ , where $$I^{(t)}$$ denotes the t-th symbolic power of a homogeneous ideal I in a noetherian polynomial ring R and $${{\,\mathrm{pd}\,}}$$ denotes the projective dimension. It has been an open question whether the function $${{\,\mathrm{depth}\,}}R/I^{(t)}$$ is non-increasing if I is a squarefree monomial ideal. We show that $${{\,\mathrm{depth}\,}}R/I^{(t)}$$ is almost non-increasing in the sense that $${{\,\mathrm{depth}\,}}R/I^{(s)} \ge {{\,\mathrm{depth}\,}}R/I^{(t)}$$ for all $$s \ge 1$$ and $$t \in E(s)$$ , where $$\begin{aligned} E(s) = \bigcup _{i \ge 1}\{t \in {\mathbb {N}}|\ i(s-1)+1 \le t \le is\} \end{aligned}$$ (which contains all integers $$t \ge (s-1)^2+1$$ ). The range E(s) is the best possible since we can find squarefree monomial ideals I such that $${{\,\mathrm{depth}\,}}R/I^{(s)} < {{\,\mathrm{depth}\,}}R/I^{(t)}$$ for $$t \not \in E(s)$$ , which gives a negative answer to the above question. Another open question asks whether the function $${{\,\mathrm{depth}\,}}R/I^{(t)}$$ is always constant for $$t \gg 0$$ . We are able to construct counter-examples to this question by monomial ideals. On the other hand, we show that if I is a monomial ideal such that $$I^{(t)}$$ is integrally closed for $$t \gg 0$$ (e.g. if I is a squarefree monomial ideal), then $${{\,\mathrm{depth}\,}}R/I^{(t)}$$ is constant for $$t \gg 0$$ with $$\begin{aligned} \lim _{t \rightarrow \infty }{{\,\mathrm{depth}\,}}R/I^{(t)} = \dim R - \dim \oplus _{t \ge 0}I^{(t)}/{\mathfrak {m}}I^{(t)}. \end{aligned}$$ Our last result (which is the main contribution of this paper) shows that for any positive numerical function $$\phi (t)$$ which is periodic for $$t \gg 0$$ , there exist a polynomial ring R and a homogeneous ideal I such that $${{\,\mathrm{depth}\,}}R/I^{(t)} = \phi (t)$$ for all $$t \ge 1$$ . As a consequence, for any non-negative numerical function $$\psi (t)$$ which is periodic for $$t \gg 0$$ , there is a homogeneous ideal I and a number c such that $${{\,\mathrm{pd}\,}}I^{(t)} = \psi (t) + c$$ for all $$t \ge 1$$ .

The paper is devoted to one open extremal problem in the geometric function theory of complex variables associated with estimates of a functional defined on the systems of non-overlapping domains. We consider the problem of the maximum of a product of inner radii of n non-overlapping domains containing points of a unit circle and the power γ of the inner radius of a domain containing the origin. The problem was formulated in 1994 in Dubinin’s paper in the journal “Russian Mathematical Surveys” in the list of unsolved problems and then repeated in his monograph in 2014. Currently, it is not solved in general. In this paper, we obtained a solution of the problem for five simply connected domains and power γ ∈ (1; 2:57] and generalized this result to the case of multidimensional complex space.
